Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The new season started on Tuesday 5 October. As usual we met at Hatfield Woodhouse Club and our guest speaker was Meryl White whose subject was “Afternoon tea”. Meryl took us through the development of Afternoon Tea, from when it was only a drink to be consumed by the very rich in the sixteenth century, then with a small amount of something to eat with the drink, and then to the formal Afternoon Tea of the Victorian era. It continued in this way until the up to the Second World War when the period of rationing during and after the War meant that ingredients were often difficult to obtain in sufficiently large quantities to use on one occasion. There has been a revival in interest in recent years. Meryl concluded her well illustrated talk with a piece of cake for everybody present. A very enjoyable evening! Next, the Annual Autumn Show was held five days later on Saturday 9th September. The Hall at the Working Men’s Club looked a picture when all the entrants had set up their entries. Judging took place from 11am, and this being the Autumn Show with more classes than in Spring, was not completed till turned 12-30. The Show was opened to the general public at about 2pm. At about 2-45pm, the Cups and Shields were presented by our President and Chairman, Mr John Brown. After this, there was an auction of the entries which competitors did not want to keep, the proceeds going to the Society’s funds. As usual, our President took the Auctioneer’s gavel, and entertained us all with his patter, at the same time selling off all the uncollected show entries and some other donated items as well. he winners of the trophies were: Lewis Trophy George Roberts Trophy Darley Cup Flower Cup Harry Smith Trophy Mary Hepworth Cup Silver Jubilee Cup Vegetable Shield Fruit Shield Floral Art Shield Handicrafts Shield Produce Shield

The Society, next Show will be in Spring on Saturday 17 March, when all classes will be open. The next meeting of the Society will be held on Tuesday 3 October when we will be having a Plant Sale. On this occasion, the proceeds from the sale of the plants will go to the people who brought them so that they can give the proceeds to a charity of their choice, or use them in any other way that they wish. As usual we will meet in Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. Everybody, both members and non members are welcome.

Hatfield Community Library The summer activities are finished and we can sit back and relax for a while. All the activities were well attended and were thoroughly enjoyed by children and adults alike. We had some new craft activities this summer which were good for family participation, as was the Lego Robotics. Kimmo entertained adults and children as always. The Sand Art duo were very good and even let a few more children join in. Our hope is that parents/carers will continue to bring children to the library to rhyme time and to borrow books. Author Event. Linda Stacey, a local published author, is coming to the library on Tuesday Sept 26th at 2pm. She will talk about her books and take questions about writing. Her book ‘House of Secrets’ is available in the library catalogue. This will be a free event. Our next event will be the Christmas Fayre on Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd. It is usually on the last Friday in November but that is far too early this year. The shops might be putting their Christmas stock out but not us at the library. December is early enough! The Christmas Tree Festival is also on at the church so I hope people will attend both. Anyone visiting the library at the beginning of September might think we had been messing up the children’s library area. In fact, we are in the middle of reorganising the fiction (then non-fiction books) to make it easier for children to select books suited to their reading confidence. The sections will be labelled and the books colour coded to return them to the right place. They will also be in alphabetical order. Last month I mentioned some of the free programmes available to library members. Now I have just been informed that Who Else Writes Like will be discontinued as hardly anyone uses the site! I have had some queries about Freegal. This is an app which allows you download 3 free tunes a week, which you can then keep. To access this, google the Doncaster Libraries and choose ebooks and music downloads. Click on the Freegal website. Log in with your card and pin number and choose your music. All our classes will be starting again in September. I have put a display in the window to catch the eye of passers-by. You can of course find more information by ringing the library or reading the local publications. Monday, Rhyme Time, Will be back in September. Yoga 6:30- 8:00. Tuesday, Art Class, 10:00-12:30, Yoga 6:30-8:00pm, Readers’ group (last Tues of the month) 3:00-4:00pm. We would like new members to join this small and friendly group. Wednesday, Supported Yoga 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm, Stronger Yoga 6:30-8:00pm. Friday, Readers’ Groups on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30 Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. Contact details, Tel. 842064 Email: hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com Find us on Facebook and in the local Publications. Autumn at Thorne Camera Club As Autumn approaches, members of the Camera Club are reluctant to let the summer go as, in spite of very unsettled weather, they have been enjoying some interesting outings over the past few months. The visit to the Appleby and Frodingham Steam Railway which runs round Scunthorpe steel works was well attended, with some ‘Time Travellers’ appearing in period costume! It was a very enjoyable day. Being a friendly group, outings are sociable occasions, and the Picnic in the Park was more sociable than most. Some outings go far afield, some are very local, but the Picnic took place in Doncaster, in the delightful Elmfield Park. The weather was kind, fining up just in time for the Sunday afternoon outing, when members met up by the fountain for photos and a good old fashioned picnic with family and friends. Members sometimes arrange impromptu outings, one such visiting Doncaster Wildlife Park, which is becoming a favourite haunt. The social activities continued with an evening in The Punch Bowl Inn, with even more members, and a few potential new members, catching up with all that’s been happening over the summer months. The second Photography for Beginners and Improvers Course is almost finished, with twenty people now feeling more confident about using their cameras, and hopefully raring to go on to produce better pictures. The new Autumn Programme starts on Monday September 18th at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall on King Street, DN8 5BA, with a review of members’ photographs from the summer, on outings, on holiday, or just at home with the family. It’s always a popular evening, getting together again, having a chat over a cuppa and looking at some interesting images. Visitors and new members are always welcome. The programme then continues every Monday except October 2nd, with friendly competitions aimed at helping members improve their photography, plus visiting speakers, demonstrations, tutorials, and practical sessions. Every week is different. Whatever your level of photography, whatever your interest, such as wildlife, landscape, family and friends, holidays, etc, the club can help you take better photos. If you would like to find out more about the club, contact the Chairman, David, on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School By: Masie, Lloyd, Byron and Lydia
Hello, welcome back to Hatfield Woodhouse Primary. We have all been working very hard on all our work and have progressed with the help of our brilliant teachers. Here are some things that have been going on in this superb, special school! New Teacher in school! This year we have a new teacher in Y3. Our new teacher is called Miss Castlehow. She is enjoying her time here so far and her children think she is fabulous! New Topics It’s the start of a new term and all the classes have new topics. We will start with FS2, their topic is called Why do you love me so much? Then years 1 and 2’s topic is about Pirates and years 3 and 4 is Blue Abyss. Finally, the year 5 and 6 topic is called Survivors. All the children in school are excited to get stuck into their new topics! The Daily Mile This year Miss Turner (our P.E leader) has introduced something called The Daily Mile. The full mile is 8 laps around our playground. Every class has done it so far. Year 5 has really enjoyed the mile. Stella in Y5 said, “I’m really enjoying The Daily Mile and it helps me concentrate on my work in the afternoon”. Obie in year 5 said, “I think the Daily Mile is good because it keeps you fit and it gets you faster.’’ Year 5 swimming lessons Year 5 have started to do swimming lessons at Thorne Leisure centre. So far they all enjoyed it and they are excited for what they will be doing in the up and coming weeks. They have all been put in groups at different levels to match their abilities. We hope for lots of success and we hope they have fun. One student in Y5 said, “I’m excited to jump in”. Also, Theo in year 5 said, “I did really well in my assessment”. Finally, Ellie - Mae said, “I’m excited to do a different activity”. See you soon for more news!
