Hatfield Community Library News Item The library has been buzzing with activity throughout the summer holidays as lots of children enjoyed our many varied activities. They have learned circus skills, art techniques, held strange animals, created sand art pictures, made a poem about aliens, been entertained by Kimmo, built and programmed a Lego model and learned how to look after dogs. Out of the 17 sessions we held there was only one near disaster, when Kimmo thought he was coming in the afternoon at 2pm instead of the 10am slot we had booked for him. Fortunately, I was able to find his telephone number to call him. And bless the man, he jumped out of bed, showered and got here from the far side of Sheffield by just after 11am. Those people, who waited for him, enjoyed a very entertaining hour with an initially flustered Kimmo. He made all the children a balloon animal by way of an apology. I would like to thank the parents and children who waited so patiently for an hour. All the children behaved very well whilst waiting- helped by the refreshments, available toys and computers and of course their parents. And on the subject of children’s activities, did anyone else spot the David Hockney look alike at the Sam’s Safaris event? It may have been some quite innocent Grandpa but how exciting if it was him! (Or even Alan Bennett who also looks like David Hockney). Summer Reading Challenge - Nearly 50 + children joined the reading challenge and 30 have finished so far. So well done to those children. They will all go in the prize draw. We are giving an extra two weeks to let more children finish the challenge. Some children have only one more visit to make to finish. Jigsaw Swap. - This has been going well. We have a lot of jigsaws which have been donated so of you would like to borrow one please come along. If you are unable to get to the library, maybe a neighbour or friend could swap one for you. The home library service is available for those people who are unable to get to the library. HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY It was a busy time for the Society at the beginning of September. Immediately after the Bank Holiday Weekend, on Tuesday 3 September, in a change to our advertised programme, Lee Plevey of Plevey’s Garden Landscapes was our guest speaker. Lee’s talk consisted of two distinct parts. Firstly Lee, who is one of our Show judges, spoke about the points judges look for when examining exhibits, and also gave us tips on how to set up show exhibits in order for them to look their best. He then went on to talk about the many types of garden compost which are available. He had brought along about fifteen sacks to illustrate the talk, all containing different products. He talked about the composition of composts and said that although there is a push towards environmentally friendly products, many still contain peat to a lesser or greater degree. Then on the following Saturday (7 September) we held our Autumn Show at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Although the number of entries in the vegetable and fruit classes was slightly fewer than usual, the number of entries in produce classes made up for this. At the end of the Show, exhibits not removes were auctioned, our President, Mr John Brown, acting as auctioneer in his usual entertaining way. The Trophy and Shield winners at the Show were. LEWIS TROPHY Roy Green GEORGE ROBERTS TROPHY Margaret Conway FLOWER CUP Mel Reed HARRY SMITH CUP Pam Banks MARY HEPWORTH TROPHY Val Geoghegan SILVER JUBILEE CUP Pam Banks VEGETABLE SHIELD Mel Reed FRIUT SHIELD Mel Reed HANDICRAFTS SHIELD Val Geoghegan FLORAL ART SHIELD Pam Banks PRODUCE SHIELD Brian Kinge The next meeting will be on Tuesday 1 October when the subject is “Agatha Christie’s Gardens” with Ruth Brompton-Charlesworth. As usual we meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Club starting at 7-30pm and everybody is welcome.

MEMBERS OF THORNE CAMERA CLUB As the Autumn Programme begins at the Camera Club, I asked some of the newer members about their interest in Photography and their reasons for joining the Club. ‘I am looking forward to the new season at Thorne Camera Club,’ said Malcolm, ‘for what will be my second year. Having come back to Photography after many years, I was finding my technique rusty, my inspiration lacking and it seemed that I was the only one remotely interested in my images. Not sure what to expect, I went along one competition evening, was impressed by the warm welcome, the images on display, took the plunge and joined. I enter most competitions, not to win, though that would be nice, but to apply myself to the given theme, often something new or out of my comfort zone, to compare my efforts to others and learn from the judge’s critique. Guest speakers have been an inspiration and practical nights opened up new techniques and ideas, together with field trips to seek that special image and to socialise. Members have different levels of ability so it has been a pleasure to both pass on some of my knowledge and ideas and also learn from those more experienced. With a dramatic improvement to my images and a real boost to my enthusiasm, it’s been a great experience.’ Mike told me, ‘Before I joined Thorne Camera Club I was slightly apprehensive that I would lack experience, or good enough camera gear. I soon discovered this to be unfounded. The members of the club have varying degrees of experience and are willing to share their knowledge with others. I particularly like the relaxed, friendly feel and the varied and interesting schedule. Since joining the club I feel my Photography has advanced greatly. Jan is probably the newest member, and she said, ‘ I only joined in April, after talking to a few members at the 1940s weekend,’ ( the Club had an Exhibition in the Methodist Church ) ‘ I found all members very welcoming. I thought the membership fee of £15.00 very acceptable. I’m looking forward to the New Season, and I hope we can do some Photoshop at some point.’ With guest judges and speakers, tutorials , demonstrations, practical evenings, photo shoots and outings, as well as competitions, all aimed at helping members improve their Photography, there’s something for just about everyone. Why not come along and find out. Contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough celebrates 80 years of the Citizens Advice service Re: 80th Anniversary Event Citizens Advice was formed 80 years ago on 4th September 1939 to help families affected by the outbreak of the Second World War. To mark the anniversary, volunteers, staff and trustees held a sponsored cycle and walk at Lakeside Doncaster to raise awareness of the charity and its services. Mrs Karen Bothamley, CEO, said “The nationwide charity has seen many changes over the last 80 years, and we wanted to do something locally to celebrate the occasion. No one else advises as many people with as many different kinds of problems across the Doncaster Borough, which gives us a unique insight into the challenges people are facing today. Demand for our services grows year-on-year - last year for instance we handled more than £9.3 million of debt for our clients. I would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who supported us – as a team we covered 139 miles and raised £1089 on the day. As a charity reliant on raising funds to provide the service, the money will be used to update equipment and software used in provision of free advice to clients across Doncaster.

Doncaster charity shortlisted to win share of £1million darts (Doncaster Community Arts) is shortlisted to win a share of a £1million fund that supports under-18s nationwide - but first they need your votes to win. Persimmon Homes South Yorkshire is backing darts to be a prize winner at a gala dinner in October, where cash awards of £20,000, £50,000 or £100,000 will be made to those winning the most online votes. The life-changing funds will go towards All Aboard - a programme for children and young people with disabilities and their families to promote independence, offer exciting creative activities and provide opportunities to express themselves. This significant funding will enable darts to expand the programme, increasing activity and enabling more disabled children to benefit. darts’ Programmes Manager Hayley Beecher said: “It is a huge achievement to have been selected as a regional finalist, but now we really need people to get behind us and get voting so that we are in the strongest possible position to earn one of the top three cash awards on the night.” She added: “Voting could not be simpler. Just log on to www.persimmonhomes.com/building-futures, select ‘Building Futures Education’ and vote for darts every 24 hours until 27th September - we would really appreciate everyone’s support!” The Persimmon Homes’ Building Futures scheme is being delivered through the Persimmon Charitable Foundation, which last year donated £620,000 to support children’s sport. Through Building Futures, a total of 128 grants of £1,000 have been awarded to groups supporting sport, education & arts and health across Persimmon’s 31 regional businesses and its head office. Persimmon Homes is an official partner of Team GB and the Persimmon Charitable Foundation enlisted the help of medallists Kat Copeland and Callum Skinner to help determine the three regional finalists for each business division. One initiative from each category will go on to win £100,000 each through a national award scheme to be decided by a public vote. As well as the £100,000 first prize, there will be a £50,000 second prize and a £20,000 third prize in each sector, while a further 87 shortlisted projects will each receive £5,000. Online hasmention begun and “The will close at midnight on September 27. to advertisements 18 voting Please Arrow” when responding
