Community News Friends of Quarry Park On Friday 4 September Friends of Quarry Park were able to hold their second volunteer work party since Lockdown restrictions were eased. 6 volunteers worked alongside a DMBC Countryside Ranger to make further inroads into outstanding work. They cleaned out paths leading into the zipwire dip, the dip and “moat” area were generally tidied up from overgrowth and debris and 3 bags of litter were collected. Overhanging branches were cut back on nearby paths. Volunteers worked socially distanced observing Covid 19 guidance. There will be a second work party this month on Friday 18 September when the Friends will take part in the countrywide Keep Britain Tidy “Great British September Clean”. This replaces the Great British Spring Clean which had to be postponed due to Covid 19. As this has to be run with DMBC support and following strict Covid 19 guidelines, to keep both volunteers and the public safe, it is only open to members of the Friends Group. FOQP are proud of their record with litter picking and are very grateful to all the Quarry Park users who regularly help to pick up litter on their daily walks, it has made a great difference over the last few months. Janice Bewley (Secretary)

This and That from Thorne Camera Club We all know the difficulties the pandemic is presenting to everyone, from visiting relatives to getting to the pub and shopping, are all a challenge, even going back to school is starting to look appealing! Some members of Thorne Camera Club have been getting about, (socially distanced of course!) and have taken some snaps to share. A small group visited Eastrington Ponds Nature Reserve, an even smaller group went to Skipwith Common, and a few visited Cusworth Hall, where the grounds and tea rooms were open. Unfortunately rain stopped play on that occasion. However two weeks previously, while cycling on the cycle path near Cusworth, one member came across an emu!. So please be careful . Apparently its called Ethel and is now reunited with its owner in Sprotborough, but Ethel the Emu has the wanderlust and keeps on escaping. Mike found himself watching a falconry show, including Harris Hawks, Stellas Sea Eagle, and a very serious looking Eagle Owl amongst the birds, and, of course, got some good photos. Travel being restricted has forced club members to look closer to home to take photos, a barn owl was photographed from one member’s bedroom window, and bees on flowers are always a popular subject. June photographed a robin in her garden, and another member, having a baking day, photographed the bread rolls she had made! There’s no limit to the ideas we can come up with when we’re stuck indoors. The city of Bath is usually full of tourists visiting the Roman Spa, however on this day, the busker was wondering where they had all gone as the place was empty. It was strange to visit Whitby where, instead of the usual crowds, photographers had the streets to themselves. With the lock down eased, the towns are filling up again, although some people have difficulty estimating 2metres so a mask is a useful addition. Further afield, Malham Cove is always a popular walk and provides an opportunity for a unique landscape photo, and much less crowded out in the fresh air. Let’s hope the pandemic starts to subside so we can all get back to some type of normality. A special meeting will be held as soon as circumstances and availability allow, to discuss the Autumn programme, which may well be a continuation of the abandoned Spring programme, so members should watch their emails. Any enquiries please email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Hatfield Community Library

Good news at last. Things have been set in motion and we are hopeful about opening in September. We are waiting to hear from the corporate landlord who is responsible for overseeing the safety of libraries and other buildings. Not an easy task as most of our volunteer libraries are now wanting to open at the same time All our checks have been done and we are well equipped with sanitiser, paper towels and masks - spare ones for any member of the public who may forget to bring one with them but I think it may be almost second nature now to don a mask when going out. I actually think it improves my looks as masks hide a lot of lines etc. I am also becoming more observant and can tell by a person’s eyes when they are smiling. Library volunteers will have visors with the option of masks as well. I went into the library for the first time since lockdown, on Thursday 27th, for an extraordinary committee meeting which included our volunteers who want to come back when we reopen. It was lovely to see the enthusiasm with which the news was greeted. After some discussion and information giving, we decided on how we were going to proceed. The library will initially open at the following times. Mon. 10am-4pm Wed. 10am-1pm Fri. 10am-1pm We are following the lead of the DMBC run libraries and taking orders for books from our library by phone or by email. We will also accept an order when books are being returned. Borrowers will be given a time to call for the book/s I know this sounds very limiting in the choice of books, but books are not being moved between libraries at the moment. However, we can use our system to search for books at other libraries and tell you from which library you can order the books. I know this is only useful if you have transport but it does widen the choice of books. We can also help you to find the titles of books by your favourite authors or any other author you wish to try. There will also be limited access to the library with borrowers only coming into the entrance area to drop off or collect books. A one-way system will be in place. We anticipate that many people will want to return books as soon as we open but the same rules will stand. Please ring to make an appointment to return your books. If all goes well, we will review the situation then hopefully the library will be open for borrowers to browse in limited numbers and for more hours. We will also be able to extend the facilities to allowing people to print off things on some computers. We would love to return to service as normal but sadly that is not possible at the moment. We are aware that most of our borrowers and volunteers are in that at risk group so we must do our best to protect them and provide some service to the community. If you attended a group activity in the library, then we have arranged for some groups to come in, some of them on those days which are not open to borrowers. The Family History groups will be coming in on Thursday. Needles and Pins on Friday as usual. (Twice a month on Friday am) The Book Clubs at their usual times. (The last Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning of the month) Your group leaders should contact you with details. At this time other groups have not been arranged but hopefully they will be able to continue. Measures have been put in place for cleaning after each group. When we have a date, look out for the information on the library window, in the local shops, on HTC notice boards and on the DMBC library website. If you are unable to come to the library, the Home Library Service is now available and all the digital services are on-line. We are all looking forward to seeing our borrowers even in a slightly different way. Stay safe and be well.

Community News Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School Welcome back everyone! It’s Mylie, Bertie and Lola here. This will be our last Arrow article as we will be passing it over to Year 5 from today! After a long time out of school we are all feeling happy to be back into our daily routine and are so pleased to be back with all our friends. Coming into school was a little strange to begin with, but we are all trying hard to adjust to some of the changes to our school day. Things have been different in some ways; we are now coming into the school using different doors for different year groups in a staggered way. At playtime we have our own areas to play in and we are now eating lunch in our own classrooms. We are working on a catch-up curriculum for the first four weeks of the term. Here is a list of the KS1 and KS2 topics: FS1 – Dear Zoo, FS2 – Stickman, Year 1 – My Stinky New School, Year 2 – Fire of London, Year 3 – The Stone Age, Year 4 – Vikings, Year 5 – Survivors, Year 6 – Crime and Punishment Our assemblies have been taking place on Zoom. It has been fun seeing Mrs Acton every Monday and Wednesday and catching up with the other children in school. Since coming back to school Oliver from Year 2 says, ‘I’ve missed my friends and I’m glad we’re back at school!’ Lexi from Year 6 says, ’We are getting back into learning new things again and realise how important it is to keep safe by remembering to social distance.’ So with that in mind, we all have lots to look forward to this term and keep remembering to stay safe and be kind to one another! Hatfield Woodhouse will be back next month with more news for you! The Pictures are of years 5 and 6 working hard on their catch-up curriculum!

Help shape local animal welfare The local branch of the RSPCA is seeking to recruit volunteer Trustees to help set the strategic direction of the Branch, monitor its progress, ensure appropriate policies are in place and support the management team, staff and volunteers. Doncaster, Rotherham & District branch supports the work of colleagues from the National RSPCA. The branch receives no government funding and as a result relies heavily on the generous donations of the public and local income generation such as fundraising events and charity shops. The Trustee role offers significant influence over the future of local animal welfare. Many people find the Trustee role enhances their skill set, advances their professional development or provides a meaningful outlet in retirement. The minimum commitment is approximately four hours per month. Some experience of managing people and/or a budget is essential, as is a passion for animal welfare, an ability to work within a team and reasonable IT literacy. Trustees must be 18 years or over. Please contact the Branch for more information. COVID19 has meant a 95% drop in income during lockdown. It is vital the branch survives to help animals like Adam. The cat was in a bad state with severe injuries to his tail which required amputation. He is coping well and has definitely earned a few treats for being such a good patient. He has a little way to go in his recovery and is still receiving treatment but will hopefully be looking for his forever home in no time. There are many ways to help the Branch with its mission to re-home and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsship through the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are RSPCA charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. The Animal Centre re-homes animals in its care and has a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.
