Community News ADVICE: Police issue advice after pet HATFIELD WOODHOUSE thefts in Doncaster. AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Police in Doncaster are urging pet owners to check their home security measures after a series of reported animal thefts across the town. There have been reported burglaries where dogs have been stolen from rear gardens, and in some cases entry forced into properties, to steal dogs of value. In one burglary, 13 Pug dogs were stolen. In another, an attempted burglary was reported to police where there were a number of Pug puppies inside the property. Eamonn Larkin, Crime Reduction Officer for Doncaster, said: “We understand that this type of theft causes a considerable amount of alarm among pet owners living in Doncaster and we are investigating whatever lines of enquiry are available to us. While a couple of the incidents reported to us have involved Pugs specifically, other burglaries have been reported to us that display no particular pattern on breed. In some cases, rabbits and a tortoise have been taken. There aren’t really any identifiable patterns in the location either, which means at this time it is very difficult to determine whether the crimes can be linked – we’ve had reports from Wheatley, Bentley, Scawthorpe, Askern, Balby and Hatfield. Our advice to all pet owners in Doncaster and across South Yorkshire is to review your home security. If you have dogs or puppies that are high value and/or desirable breeds, please make sure your home security is up-to-date and up to the job of keeping them safe. If you let your animals out in the rear garden, don’t leave them there alone and try and make sure you have some reasonable security on any outdoor kennels or dog runs. As well as dogs being stolen, we have also had two reports of rabbits being stolen from hutches in back gardens and one of a tortoise being stolen. More information on securing your property is available on our website: http://southyorks.police.uk/Bewise Be Wise this summer | South Yorkshire Police This summer we're reminding you to #BeWise and to protect yourself and your property. During the summer months there can be a rise in seasonal crime trends, such as burglary and doorstop crime. This is usually linked to the warmer weather.

There was no indoor meeting in August, but the Society’s Annual Outing took place on the first Tuesday of the month. The year it was to the Wold’s Way Lavender Garden at Wintringham near Malton, and a large party (46 people) of members and guests enjoyed a good day out at the Garden. Next month we are back to our meetings at Hatfield Woodhouse Club and start off the Autumn Session on Tuesday 5 September with a talk from Meryl White entitled “Afternoon Tea”. This is one of our occasional non gardening talks, and if it is half as good as last time Meryl visited us, we are in for a treat. Everybody is welcome to this meeting, members and non members alike. As usual, the meeting will be at Hatfield Club commencing at 7-30pm. Closely following this on Saturday 9 September we will be holding our Autumn Show at Hatfield Woodhouse Club, when the doors will open to the public at 2pm. Prize giving will be at about 2-45pm, and this will be followed by an Auction of unclaimed exhibits, with the monies raised going to Society funds. As usual, our star Auctioneer will be the Society President, Mr John Brown.

This gorgeous boy is Donald, a very affectionate 4 year old boy who has recently come into Isle Rescue, and is looking for a new home. Donald is great with other cats and would be fine with kids, and would make a lovely family pet. He is just one of 15 cats currently in the Rescue looking for new homes. All of our older cats are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet any of our cats or dogs, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705 or check out our websitewww.islerescue.co.uk for more details.

Summer Visits by Thorne Camera Club As part of the Summer Programme of outings near and far, Camera Club members recently paid a visit to Walkers Nurseries Ornamental Gardens, Blaxton. Surprisingly, some members had never been before and some were unaware of its existence. A large group congregated in the car park, before going into the grounds, where they immediately found objects and vistas worth photographing, including aircraft coming in to land at Finningley! Although showery, the group had a very successful visit, it takes more than a shower of rain to put the members off, some had cameras boasting 96 watertight seals, others could just put them in their pockets! The grounds were looking beautiful, and very well kept, with something for everyone. Then, of course, time to enjoy a lovely cup of tea, a slice of delicious cake, and wander round the garden centre on the look-out for bargains as well as items of interest photographically. So ‘a good time was had by all’ as member John often says. A canal trip from Thorne to Doncaster arranged with Sobriety Trust formed another successful visit. The weather was glorious as the boat made its way through various locks and miles of tree lined canal to the basin in Doncaster where a minibus arrived to return members to Thorne. Some managed to secure a premier seat in the bow, basking in the sun. Thankfully there was no ‘man overboard’, but plenty of interest to photograph as well as enjoying the social atmosphere on board. A ride on the Appleby and Frodingham Steam Preservation Railway round the steelworks at Scunthorpe afforded some very unusual views, enjoyed by a large group from the club. There are over 100 miles of track to choose from, some passing close to the furnaces. It makes a very unusual afternoon out, and included a visit to the engine shed plus tea and cake in a beautifully renovated old carriage. Meanwhile, the second Photography Course is underway, well subscribed it is now full. If interest demands it, there may be another organised at a later date. Ladies seem to form the majority on this course, all keen to learn how to make better use of their cameras, and hopefully join the main club too. Soon the club meetings will begin again in Thorne Methodist Church Hall, comprising a variety of activities with a photographic focus. If you are interested in joining, please contact David on 07463821182 for details, or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk or come on Monday September 18th at 7.15pm

Hatfield Community Library The library has been buzzing with children’s events from the end of July and throughout August. We have had a great of choice of activities for all ages of children as well as a constant supply of juice and biscuits. The activities were all fully booked but we did manage to provide extra sessions of some activities so as not to disappoint some children. I really enjoyed my visits to local schools and would like to thank them for letting me into their assemblies as I know schools are very busy at the end of the year. Thankyou to all those borrowers and the art group who were kind enough to put up with many excited children in the library. All the activities were free but we hope parents, grandparents and carers will realise that it can be an enjoyable experience to come into the library and encourage their children to borrow books or come along to story time. We have toys and refreshments (for a small charge) available at all times. The more people who support the library the longer we can stay open and get new book None of the activities would have been possible without the help of donations from sponsors such as Hatfield Town Council, Asda, the Robert Forster Charity and the Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s. A new programme has been added to the public computers for borrowers who are going to take their driving test. It is called Theory Test and learners can practise example test questions in the library for free. There is also a new music programme called Freegal which borrowers can use to download tunes at home again for free. Another useful site on the Doncaster Library website is Who Else Writes Like. If you have read all the books by your favourite author this site will help you to find other writers who write in a similar style. I am a fan of David Baldacci and have found another author, Scott Mariani, who writes the same type of book. This is a site which can be used at home with your library card and pin number. The Art Exhibition and Coffee Morning was quite successful. Thank you to those people who supported us. We made nearly £100 on the raffle, cake and book sale. Story time, Yoga and Sewing classes will resume in September but the Art, Needles and Pins and the Readers Groups are still running throughout the holidays. We are still accepting hardback and paperback books to sell or add to stock. Even if they are not in very good condition, we can still make money from them. One of our young volunteers has made the Facebook page a bit better so I hope it is more informative. Contact. Tel. 842064 E-mail hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

Friends of Quarry Park Big Bluebell Plant. Friends of Quarry Park had cause to celebrate last month when Quarry Park was one of three Parks in Doncaster to be awarded Green Flag status for the first time. At a short ceremony on Friday 21 July DMBC personnel and Friends of Quarry Park raised the flag aloft watched by local residents and regular visitors, everyone feeling proud that our Local Nature Reserve had been recognised nationally as deserving of this special award. The Friends Group are now moving on to their next project which is to create bluebell glades in the woodland using native English Bluebells. Thanks to funding from the Greggs Community Foundation and Hatfield Town Council 7,000 native English bluebell bulbs are to be purchased along with 1,000 wild garlic bulbs. They will be delivered late September and need to be planted as soon as possible. We are arranging a Big Bluebell Plant, a weekend of planting sessions for Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October from 10.30 to 12.30 and 2 to 4p.m each day. We are appealing for help in this mammoth task. If you enjoy Quarry Park and would like to see it enhanced by carpets of Native English Bluebells in springtime please contact us if you are able to help. If you are not able to help physically perhaps you could donate towards refreshments for the volunteers. This will be the first of our weekend volunteer sessions at the request of potential volunteers who are at work during the week, we aim to repeat them quarterly, the next one being in January 2018. They will be alternated between Saturday and Sunday, be for 2-3 hours and will be in addition to the present monthly sessions. To get in touch email thequarrypark@gmail.com, or via our Facebook page Friends of Quarry Park, or Tel 841451. We will be on the Park on Friday morning 1 September for our monthly volunteer work party, meeting in St Mary’s Road Car Park at 10 a.m. and our next public meeting will be on Wednesday 27 September at 7p.m in Dunsville Methodist Church when arrangements will be finalised for the bulb planting. Hatfield Town Cricket Club It's has been a big few weeks on and off the field at HTCC since our last update. On the field the 1st XI reached it's first ever Pontefract League Cup Final. They faced Ackworth CC coincidentally at Ackworth on the 6th August and a youthful looking side acquitted themselves with great credit despite suffering defeat. Ackworth batted first and were bowled out for 196. All the bowlers put in a great effort and bowled well with Kev Marshall 3-46 and Matt Cumpsty 2-24 the main wicket takers, while Shehzad Hussain bowled 8 overs for just 19 runs in a tight opening spell. Town never really got going in their reply with only Connah Pattison 21, Ellis Pattison 36 and Paul Davies 27 making any impact and saw Town all out for 131. Special mention has to be made of the support the team received a full supporters coach and with many more travelling by car outnumbering the home crowd. The turnout was well appreciated by the team and shows how much the club has become a part of the community. Thank you everyone! In the league fixtures both Saturday sides continue with narrow defeats followed by resounding victories. The highlight being the 1st XI's big win at neighbours Barnby Dun. Town made 230-5 with Ellis Pattison 80 and Connah Pattison 67no the mainstays. The hosts were then bowled out for 129 with James Winstanley 4 -32 and Kev Marshall 3-29 doing the damage. The juniors have continued their good progress. The Under 11's lost narrowly in the cup semi-final, whilst the Under 9's have reached the supplementary Cup Final in their first season. The club have some good players to look forward to in the future! There is even more exciting news off the field. After much hard work over the last 2 years the club are now in a position to pursue the construction of a new pavilion. Funds are in place to support the planning process and the work we have done in the junior set up means we will be applying for the ECB's Clubmark status and this will in turn allow us to approach funding organisations with optimism. Pavilion plans have been drawn up already and will be submitted to the council shortly. We have had expressions of interest from local businesses offering assistance in the past and we are hoping these may still come to fruition now that were fully prepared. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping the club with this exciting project.

I am writing this in the middle of the summer holidays. For a head-teacher, the summer holidays are an opportunity to write the Academy Development Plan. This is a document which reflects on the successes of the previous academic year and makes plans for the next year. Much of the focus these days, is on the end of Key Stage SATs results. I was very proud of our results again, this year. 95% of our small Year 6 class attained agerelated expectations in reading, 90% attained age-related expectations in maths and 85% in writing. 75% of the cohort attained age-related expectations in combined reading, writing and maths. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School is about so much more than academic results though. It’s about celebrating all the children’s interests and talents and watching them grow. End of term celebrations Academic results were not the only talent demonstrated by our Year 6 class! During the last week of term they entertained the whole school and their parents with a circus performance. Hugh made an outstanding ring-master, whilst other children demonstrated acrobatic skills, magic tricks and hula-hooping. We giggled at the clowns and were in awe at the standard of the gymnasts. It was a joyful and entertaining experience for all concerned and I was delighted that the performers all had such big beaming smiles throughout their show – enjoying every minute of it. Hatfield Woodhouse Has Got Talent The end of term also saw a celebration of the talents of children from other year groups too. We were honoured to have two very illustrious judges for our talent show – ‘The Pensionalities’ – Henry Hall and Malc Sykes, fifth place winners of the Britain’s Got Talent competition, judged for us. The judges requested that the winner, Keegan become part of their team of body-guards after his terrifying demonstration of dance / martial arts to ‘Fist Fighting a Sandstorm’ by Sia using a bo staff and nunchucks. They were impressed by our other winner, Maisie’s dancing and confident attitude as she performed as Matilda. They wished her well for her forthcoming audition for the role on the London stage. Maisie is currently doing the voiceover for one of the characters on the children’s TV programme ‘Woolly and Tig’ Building works and new toilets! Looking forwards to next term, we are pleased that the cracks appearing on the walls of the oldest part of our school have been rectified by a dedicated team of builders over the summer holidays. Other contractors have been working really hard over the summer to make some improvements to toilet facilities in school. I think it is important that these areas of school are modern and hygienic as inadequate facilities or poor access can have wide ranging implications for children’s physical, emotional and psychological health. We give a big thank-you to our fantastic Site Manager, Mr Needham for all his work to get these projects completed. More Sport in 2017-2018 2016-2017 saw Hatfield Woodhouse Primary taking part in several inter-school sporting competitions including cross-country, football, quick cricket, tag-rugby and athletics. Thanks to the generosity of the Freedom Boxing Club at Lindholme, when we enter further competitions next year our teams will look incredible in new kits including hoodies, t-shirts and shorts. Watch out for

reports of our results from our sporting competition. We have the benefit of excellent PE teaching from Mr Nichols from Xcite and Mr Beaglehole from the FA, as well as our own PE co-ordinator, Miss Turner. We have some budding sports stars of the future, as our Sports Award assembly showed. Well, I really should get back to writing that Academy Development Plan I was telling you about earlier. We have so many new ideas to trial, from courses our teachers attended in the summer term:- Bar Modelling in Maths, Same Day Interventions and Reciprocal Reading. I can’t wait for term to start so we can get on with it …. I bet there are one or two parents out there feeling the same! Looking forward to sharing our news through-out the new academic year. Yours, Helen Acton -Principal
