DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Some of you may know us already, but we are Doncaster’s oldest cancer charity having started in 1972. We primarily fundraise to buy cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals and over the years have raised over £9 million purchasing over 80 pieces of equipment. This included building, equipping and upgrading St John’s Hospice which is now independently run. We could not have done all this without the generous donations and support from local residents, groups and various organisations. All our members and management team are volunteers – unlike the majority of charities we do not have any paid staff. Our last purchase was for Doncaster Royal Infirmary where, at the beginning of this year, we finally reached our goal of £500,000 to buy a new state-of-the-art CT scanner. This will be housed in the new CT unit currently being built and which should be operational by January 2020. Our current appeal which we started in April is for prostate cancer to raise £150,000 for a biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. At the time of writing we have raised over £10,000. Please check our website (dcdt.co.uk) for regular updates. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to organise an event on our behalf please do get in touch with us as we can supply you with T-shirts, posters, etc., and can advertise your event on our website. We are making preparations for our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre. This year it will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We have some lovely new items which you can buy in memory of loved ones and will have more information for you in the next issues. We are always in need of volunteers and you will be made very welcome. Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. It doesn’t matter how small your donation, it all goes towards the biopsy machine for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Our charity has always believed that local money should support local people.
Doncaster Movie Makers Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members - keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring like -minded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking - from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos. Our first meeting is on Wednesday 25 September at 7.30pm at Flintwood Methodist Church, Lansdowne Road, Intake Doncaster DN2 6QN and we continue to meet every week until April. Hatfield Town Cricket Club It's been a successful few weeks on the field for HTCC. The major performance being a Doncaster Evening Cup Final success over Bentley CC. In gloomy conditions at Doncaster Town fields Town were set a difficult target of 137 in 20 overs. A top team batting performance saw them reach the target with just 5 balls to spare in a late night nail-biting finale. Rhys Mann top scored with 59*. In the league they are one win away from a double success after some impressive performances from all the players. Meanwhile, the 1st XI have continued their impressive league form to sit 2nd in the League just 2 points off top spot. The highlight of their season so far being a devastating one-sided 110 run victory over league leaders Hundhill Hall. Put in to bat in difficult condition Town made a challenging 176-8 with Jake Van Oorschot 29 and Andy Cutts 39 setting the tome with a patient opening partnership. At the break the visitors thought they were in control but James Stewart 7-35, aided by Connah Pattison 2-12 ran through the visiting line up for just 66 runs! They have 4 games left to try and overtake the leaders and claim the top spot. The 2nd XI with have several youngsters performing well and are just behind the leaders at the top of the table. A recent 5 wicket success over neighbours Sykehouse being one of the standout performances with 4 juniors in the side. Rob Ridler starred with 4-12. The Sunday side maintained top spot with recent victories over Monk Bretton and Mexborough. and will be looking to keep up the good work in the remaining fixtures. The juniors have continued to progress well with the 'Arrow' Under 9's awaiting their cup final, the Under 11's producing some excellent performances and the Under 13's with several Under 11's in the ranks winning 5 consecutive matches to end the season on high. The Ladies Softball Cricket side enjoyed a successful finals day and finished 3rd in the South Yorkshire Finals day. they continue to train each Friday 6:00-7:00 at Carr Side Lane. Sadly our village BBQ event had to be cancelled when the weather forecast proved too unpredictable. We hope to have it back bigger and better next year. The Clubs presentation evening will be 18th October at Thornensian's Rugby club when the Juniors and Senior sides achievements will be recognised all club members and supporters are invited to come along, get in touch for more details at hatfieldtown@outlook.com

Selfies by Thorne Camera Club It was lovely for members to talk to people who braved the awful weather and visited the Club Exhibition at the Summer Fair. There were some very good photos on display, but sadly the damp didn’t do them any good. Some were damaged and others warped by the conditions, so Sunday’s display was cancelled. What a shame, after all the lovely weather we had had, that it rained so heavily, but those there seemed to be enjoying the event anyway. Hopefully we will see you again at our Autumn meetings . In the meantime, there are more outings, visits and photo shoots, and like most other people, club members like to take ‘Selfies’. To some, this is a new and modern phenomena, and it has certainly caught on, but new it isn’t. Here is a ‘selfie’ taken in 1918, that’s over a hundred years ago! 16 year old Frank Lyons used his first camera, a wooden Victorian one which used glass plates, and he operated it, for this photo, by a cable shutter release. I wonder if anyone has an older ‘selfie’? Using a mirror is another way to take a selfie, and Club chairman David did just that to get the shot of himself in a public garden in Beverley, on an outing with the members. He’s in his ‘summer plumage’ as he only grows a beard when he has no duties to perform. It gives him a very nautical air. The secretary, Lynda, also tried this method of ‘selfie’, using a compact camera; phones are probably the easiest to use for selfies, much less fiddly. A few of the members use compacts or bridge cameras for their photography, and some use mobiles as well. On a photo shoot at the Old Rectory, Epworth, Mike and Julia took a more usual one, using a mobile, at the front door as the shoot ended after an interesting visit to the house and gardens, while Mike D took his at home. Everyone seems to be doing it wherever you go, and some of the poses people strike to get themselves and the background in, are amusing and make good photos themselves, and people-watching is a great occupation, especially with a camera of your own to hand. So here are some tourists taking ‘selfies’, at Mont St. Michel and Nice in France. Now the holidays are drawing to a close, the Autumn Programme at the Club will soon begin with the usual mixture of demonstrations and tutorials, visiting speakers and members nights, competitions and practical sessions all designed to help improve our photography. An informal social will be held in the Punch Bowl on 9th September, everyone welcome to come and join in, then Monday meetings start on 16th September at 7.15pm in the Methodist Church Hall.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School It was a busy end to the year at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. The Year 6 pupils were busy rehearsing their end-of-term show and at the other end of school the nursery children were busy practising their nursery rhymes for the Nursery Graduation. Hatfield Church Garden Party We feel it is important for our children to share their talents within the local community, so we were delighted when we were invited to perform at Hatfield Church Garden Party in July. Unfortunately, bad weather meant that the event was moved from the barn field inside the church. With nervous anticipation we watched the excellent dance routine by Travis St Lawrence children and listened to Markham Main band. Then it was the turn of our year 6 children to sing. Eleanor, Stella, Lydia, Kady and Jack sang and performed about their very first day at school when they felt both scared and curious. Next they went on to sing the S.A.Ts Blues ...who wouldn’t have the blues when taking tests although we were pleased that 100% of our children met age-related expectations in maths this year!) They ended with a moving song about the sadness of saying good-bye to primary school friends as they separate to go to secondary school. Particularly poignant for Hatfield Woodhouse, as this year the children are going off to 7 different secondary schools. The children were delighted to be asked to sing an encore! Hopefully we will be invited to perform again next year. Trip to London Bad weather seemed to be a recurring theme of this half term’s activities for Year 6. At the beginning of June they went to visit the Houses of Parliament and met our M.P Caroline Flint. It was an interesting day to visit the capital city – especially as it was the first visit for some of the children because unfortunately it was the day President Trump was in town. Avoiding the protest march and getting across a city heavily protected by armed police and protection officers made the visit a bit of a headache for the visit leaders, especially in heavy rain. The children thought it was amazing however, and learnt a great deal about democracy, British Values and British weather! Year 6 Leavers We had our usual assembly and leavers arch to say good-bye to the Year 6 children. We wish them well as they start in their new secondary schools. We are very proud of their hard-work and kind attitude to others so we know they will go on to great things in the future. We also said good-bye to Mrs Holt, who retired after 50 years working in schools. Mrs Holt has run our Art Club and has supported in the classrooms well past the usual retirement age. The children all love her as you can see in the photo! We will miss her for her artistic display, her organisational skills, her caring nature and her sense of fun! Hopefully she will have a long and happy retirement - enjoying the Andre Rieu concert tickets we gave her as a leaving gift! When we return to school in September watch out for our new school uniform. Instead of our usual red uniform all the children will be wearing our new bright blue Delta uniform. Our Year 5 and 6 children will also be wearing formal shirts and ties. We will make sure to send you photographs in the next edition. Helen Acton-principal

Crime Prevention
I have to bring to your attention the continuing number of burglaries occurring across Doncaster. In certain parts of the Borough, houses are targeted purely for the make of car parked at the address. Prestige German cars are among those favoured by thieves. The stolen vehicle can have its identity changed and sold on to an innocent buyer or exported abroad or dismantled and the parts sold on, The type and quality of security devices fitted to many motor vehicles means that relatively few vehicles are stolen without a key, necessitating in some cases, the key to be stolen in order to steal the vehicle. Some thieves will break into a property to obtain the car keys and then steal the car. Sadly, on some occasions the thief does not even have to break into a house to steal the keys. In some recent cases, vehicle keys left on a table inside the front door have been stolen by reaching through the letter box using a pole or similar with a hook on the end. The main prevention technique is to take your keys to bed with you. Do not leave car keys on a table inside the door on the kitchen work surface. The belief that offenders will come into the bedroom to steal keys is not one supported by statistics. There is only one report of this happening and the vehicle in question was a Supercar valued at over £300,000. If the thief steals the car using the ignition keys, that also means the alarm system and immobiliser are inoperative. Consider fitting a tracking device to your vehicle or a separate physical security device. Secure your house to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. If your doors have Euro profile cylinder locks that are more than two years old, change the locks for ones that comply with Security standard SS312 or TS007 3 star. If every householder in Doncaster fitted security rated door locks to their property the number of burglaries would drop drastically. With the occasional bouts of nice weather we are experiencing, we can enjoy our gardens or just open our doors and windows to provide ventilation. Sneak in burglaries occur when thieves walk into houses via open doors or reach in though open windows to steal property. Do not leave a room that has an open window, always shut the window before leaving the room. Similarly if the rear door is open, stay in that room or be in a location where you can see the door or anyone approaching it. As always, the advice not to leave cash, wallets or other valuables on open display or on work surfaces near open windows applies at this time of year. Information on security rated locks is available at your Flat Roofs, Repairs, Slates, Tiles, local Master locksmiths or on their website at http:// www.locksmiths.co.uk/faq/lock-snapping-most-secureGuttering, Fascia’s, Chimneys. lock-cylinder/ Competitive Rates Burglary prevention advice is available on the South Yorkshire police website at No Job Too Small http://www.southyorkshire.police.uk/sites/default/files/401302 858164 9-14%20Janes%20approved%20artwork.pdf Crime Reduction Officer 07427 212714 South Yorkshire Police

Hatfield Community Library News Item I have just returned from watching my first Doncaster Rovers match which I thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was great as the home fans created an encouraging chant worthy of any premier league team. I only went as my grandson was a mascot but my daughter and I could make it a regular event because of the friendly atmosphere. We have been really busy at the library as our summer events are in full swing. They have all been well attended and enjoyed by lots of children and adults. Sadly, some people who signed up did not turn up and wasted spaces that other children could have taken. I have managed to be at all of them so far. I have learned how to make a balloon dog, spin a plate and make a Lego model move but drew the line at trying the uni-pedal things. Just when I thought my life was not very exciting!! There was nothing more gratifying than watching a group of children practising their circus skills on Tuesday morning as the rain hammered down outside. There are more events to come. Our Drama Evening was also enjoyed by about forty people who were entertained by a variety of comedy scenes and a one act farce which had the audience laughing throughout. The M&S sandwiches also went down well. If you missed it look out for our next drama event. It is well worth the money. Our improvements to the library continue. Thanks to TT Tiles, who gave their time for free, the kitchen looks more finished. Just the decorating to be done to complete the overhaul. The weeds at the front are gradually being defeated by Dave but it does take time especially with the frequent showers. Quite a few children have signed up for The Summer Reading Challenge. This is a fun way to encourage children to continue to read during the holidays. The children need to visit the library three times after joining the reading challenge to takeout/bring books back. If they are already coming to some events this is easy to do. There are some prizes at the end. Some of our classes are still running in between our summer events so if you want to join the Bridge Club, Games Café, Art Group, Needles and Pins, Yoga Groups and Computer help, please ring for information.
