DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are into the last quarter of the year already….it hardly seems possible. We do hope you have managed to enjoy some change of scenery during the main holiday month or else have something exciting planned for next year. News of our new appeal ! We are going to focus on skin cancer. According to the NHS website it is one of the most common cancers in the world. As we look forward to our holidays abroad (as well as in this country) many of us plan to enjoy a week or two in the sun. It is only in the past few years that we have learnt the true cost of all those hours of sunbathing. Not that skin cancer is confined to sunworshippers, it can occur in people who work outdoors or maybe enjoy outdoor pursuits. At the time of writing we are in consultation with Doncaster Royal Infirmary as to the kind of equipment they need. We will bring you more news of this as soon as we have the information. Good news! We hope to bring you the Memory Tree appeal back in December. As most of you know this is held in the Frenchgate Centre where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. This is exciting news for us as it will be the first time we have held a public fundraising event for 18 months. If you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. At last we seem to be moving forward and we really look forward to seeing you, our faithful supporters, and also new ones, in the coming months.

Thorne Camera Club Thorne Camera Club member have been able to meet up and get out and about since the Covid restriction started to be relaxed earlier in the year. Various trips have been organised, mainly with small groups, to nature reserves, stately homes, an evening walk around York as well as an outdoor portrait sessions. Recently a group met at Skipworth Common near Selby, this former military site is now one of the few places in the UK being returned to common heathland. We all were hoping for beautiful colours, dappled sunlight, perhaps a low mist for some stunning photos. But all we really got was very wet as it rained all day. But the banter between members, the coffee and cakes made it all worthwhile. One of the good things about Thorne Camera Club is the support every member receives from other club members, be that helping with photos taken with a camera on the phone for social media stuff, or members wishing to take formally recognised qualifications, there is plenty of experience to share. So if you fancy coming along to the club to see what’s happening please get in touch via the Facebook page which has all the contact details or see the flyers around Thorne. The idea that you have to re-mortgage your house to buy equipment to take quality photos is thankfully past, and most phones now have a superb camera that are simple to use and easy to share quality photos. Changing a few simply settings on the camera app can turn a simple family snap, in to a family portrait worthy of hanging on the lounge wall. Members of the camera will be able to help with this or anything to improve your photos. This month’s photos examples from the club include images taken on Thorne and Hatfield moors, a Northumbrian Castle as well as superb photos showing how evening light can be used effectively.

Friends of Quarry Park The monthly work party scheduled for Friday 6 August unfortunately had to be postponed. This was due to a staff shortage in the DMBC Countryside Rangers team that usually provides support for the volunteers. It’s hoped that we may be able to run the work party on Friday 20 August instead, but look out for confirmation of this on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or on the park noticeboards. Our Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday 21 July at the Methodist Church in Dunsville and a number of new Committee members were elected. After 25 years of service, Bob and Delyse Rockliff have retired from the Committee and were presented with gifts and a card from the Friends as a token of appreciation for their many years of hard work and dedication to Quarry Park. Janice Bewley has stepped down from her role as Secretary and was also presented with gifts and a card. We wish them all the very best for the future and hope they will continue to enjoy using the park. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Friends of Quarry Park, there are plans to hold a Scarecrow Festival and Bring Your Own Picnic event on the park. The provisional date is Saturday 16th October from 11.00am to 3.00pm, subject to approval and support from the DMBC Countryside Rangers team. For more information and details on how you can take part, please look out for posters and check our Facebook page. Just a reminder, the Doncaster Mumbler’s Explorers Quest is currently running on the Park until 5 September. This is a free activity for children, ideal for enjoying during the school holidays. All the relevant information and a Quest Trail Sheet can be found on the website www.doncaster.mumbler.co.uk. The September volunteers’ work party will be held on Friday 3 September. Anyone interested in coming along to help will be most welcome. Equipment is provided but it’s advisable to have sturdy footwear and gloves. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking to clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. We meet in the car park at the end of St Mary’s Road, Dunsville at 10.00am. For more information, please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’.

Hatfield Community Library
Well, what a difference in the library over the last few weeks! Our children’s events certainly had the library buzzing. I have to admit to being apprehensive about so many more people coming into the library at the same time, but all the adults wore facemasks as requested. I would like to thank them for their consideration as this made volunteers feel more confident and safer. Technic Lego started the ball rolling and will be back as our last event. I am always amazed at how quickly the children are able to understand the instructions and complete the task of making a model and programming it to make noises and move. Kimmo filled the room with laughter and noise with his magic and ventriloquist act. Like all entertainers, he was pleased to be back working with children. He likes coming to our library which is a compliment as he also does Disney cruises. Sam’s Safaris bewitched the children with their array of animals. Children confidently handled the snake and other creatures. Not like one of our volunteers who hurriedly made for home! I must admit a giant spider would have sent me running. Still to come at time of writing are Circus Skills, Balloon Modelling and the last Technic Lego session. All sessions are fully booked. Sorry to those children who were disappointed but hopefully next year we may be able to put on more events. After a lean year, we need to fill up the coffers with funding and money raising events. In the last article I included a poem by Harold Edwards and asked if anyone knew what “the Monkey run” was. A very kind gentleman replied with this explanation: ‘I noticed that in this m onth ’s HATFIE LD ARROW you wanted to know what the “ MONKEY RUN “was? Well I will do my best to enlighten you. The Monkey Run was usually on a Sunday evening in Thorne. It was where young Men and Girls would walk on opposite sides of the road. hoping to meet. It was usually from the North Eastern Pub to the old canal bridge. I must confess that in the early 1950s, when I was a young man and before I left Moorends to join the Army, I and my mates went on it a few times! There was also one in Goole from the clock in the market to the Station. I wonder how many of your readers have memories of it.’ Thank you for that explanation. We now have the question of why it was called the Monkey run. Hopefully, some-one in Thorne might have the answer.

I think that in my home village, Newbiggin-by-Sea, that the promenade was used in much the same way. At the library, we are now looking ahead to September and trying to make preparations for some of our other groups to return. The Games Café and Bridge Club have not yet started, but we hope these will be able to start again in September. If you are interested in joining any of these clubs, ring up in September to find out details. We also look forward to having our Family History and Yoga groups back then. The Art Group, Readers’ Groups and Needles and Pins have been using the library, but because of the restrictions on numbers we have not asked for new members. Hopefully in September we will be in a position to accept new people into these groups. In recent articles, I have written quite a lot about the history of Hatfield so I thought that I would look at the history of some of the other villages which make up the Hatfield Ward. I have started with Dunsville which is the youngest of our wards. (I think) The name Dunsville has only been in use since about 1927 (Ben Brown the author was not sure of the date) as it was previously called Park Lane. In 1784 some of the resident farmers, were John Simpson, William Wood and John Loverseige. The 1851 census records a population of 17 households with 97 people. The main inhabitants were farmers W. Dobson, T. Marsden, T.Holgate and G. Kynman. Henry Pilkington, a Barrister-at-law, lived in Park Lane Hall. (Built towards the end of the 18th century and now known as Wyndthrope Hall) there were 12 household of agricultural labourers. In 1920, Mr and Mrs Dunn moved to the area. Mr Edward Crawhurst Dunn, b.1886, was the first manager of the Hatfield Co-op and lived above the shop. They later moved to Park Lane and Mr Dunn took over Park Lane Farm. He then took ownership of the sand and gravel quarry. After WW1, there was a shortage of houses so the Government offered grants to builders who would build house which could be rented for less than 10 shillings. (50p) Mr Dunn, then a Hatfield Councillor, took advantage of this offer and built houses-to-let at Park Lane using materials from his quarry. There were strict controls on the tenants, exterior paint had to be black and white, no alterations without permission and no dogs. Tenants were able to buy their houses in 1960s Shops were built along the High Street by 1936. Children walked to Hatfield Travis School or rode a horse to Hatfield Woodhouse. A temporary “tin” school was built off Broadway in 1920, then Dunsville First school was built in 1952. Mr Dunn died in 1952 and his headstone in Hatfield Cemetery describes him as the “owner and builder of Dunsville”. All information was from Ben Brown’s book “Old Hatfield. A Pictorial History” Finally. I have discovered more poems by Harold Edwards. I would like to share this one about Beauty with you, Beauty we see in so many ways Emotions we feel in what beauty says Music that speaks with a sensitive voice Enraptures the soul with a sense of rejoice A landscape of art the eyes they delight Imagines the scene giving it life A sunset that lowers on some distant hill One golden moment the mind calm and still Birdsong at dawn to greet a new day Night’s heavenly stars and the bright Milky Way All creatures born with beauty at birth The colourful flora that covers the earth If we feel with our hearts and open our minds Beauty will enter and show in our eyes I think this one is particularly relevant in these times. People often write “poetry” in moments of intense feelings -happiness, pain, joy, sorrow, despair, elation. It helps to articulate emotions which are difficult to talk about and often relieves stress. It may remain private or be shared with others as Harold has done. I have not heard from anyone who knows who Harold is. If anybody has any information, please send it to me at the library. I have found a new place where I can advertise library events.” Nextdoor Hatfield” Contact the library. Tel. 842064 Email: hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

DISCOVER A LOST VICTORIAN MARVEL There will soon be an opportunity for members of the public to find out all about Doncaster’s amazing lost Sand House. There are guided walks of the area where it once stood, planned for Sunday 12th September. The walks, at 11am and repeated at 2pm, will be led by Richard Bell, Chair of Trustees of The Sand House Charity and a direct descendant of the man who created the Sand House. The house was carved from solid rock in the 1850s, in a small quarry just south of Doncaster town centre. It also had a network of tunnels connected to it. Although the house was destroyed around 1938, local people still remember the tunnels, many of which survived until the 1980s. Some of them were decorated with wonderful carvings, including one of a full-size elephant. Places on the guided walks MUST be pre-booked, as attendance is limited for safety reasons. Please phone Richard Bell on 07777 688438 to book a place. The 90-minute walks, which take place as part of Heritage Open Days 2021, are free of charge, but donations to support the work of The Sand House Charity are greatly appreciated. Find out more at www.thesandhouse.org.uk. Speaking about the forthcoming walks, Richard Bell said “The Sand House and its tunnels may have disappeared, but the clues to their former existence are still very much there. With the help of historic photos and maps, visitors will learn how the Sand House developed and where it stood. They will stand directly above where the iconic Elephant and Mahout sculpture lies buried deep underground”.
