I do love the Summer months! The weather is great, (mostly), everyone is out and about saying hello and generally people are happier. Boston park Farm is now open all year round! And the Maize Maze opens on 16th July, 10am - 5pm. See page 25 for full details. Or you could visit the Yorkshire Wildlife Park during the holidays, there are some amazing animals to see and lots of other activities. Full details can be found on page 16. I’ve received a huge amount of information to be included in this months magazine which is fantastic. Its great to know that so many people read the magazine and like to share their news and event details. The Hatfield Arrow relies solely on local businesses advertising their products or services, if you know of anyone that would benefit from having an advert in the Arrow please pass on my contact details which are printed below. The deadline for news, information, event details or adverts for the August issue is Monday 11th July. I look forward to hearing from you.

Disappointing Sequel to the 'Clean for the Queen' Event. Unfortunately I had other plans' made earlier, so I could not help with the litter pick which, I am told, went better than expected. Desperate for beans on toast on my return to Hatfield one hour after the finish I went to Tesco's for supplies. On the way to the shop I was appalled to find rubbish spread along the path just past the nail shop on Station Road. An over full green box filled with half empty tins had been attacked by a dog and the resultant mess had been spread down the path towards the Scout Hut. I picked up the whole mess and put it in a plastic bag fuming, all that effort gone in an hour. The green boxes are not fit for purpose but we could improve the situation by making them less attractive to scavengers and washing the tins and bottles before putting lids on the box or putting the stuff in a large bag. Returning home there was more mess along Westfield Road. It beats me why people buy buns and then not eat them? Everyone I talk to picks up litter so WHO ARE THE PHANTOM LITTERERS? You know who you are and as my school teacher used to say before giving out a large paper sack and a working detention YOU MUST TRY HARDER TO MAKE OUR ENVIRONMENT ATTRACTIVE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY Yvonne Wright

Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise money to help a Doncaster Charity We just wanted to give you an update on how the training is going and remind anyone who would still like to donate to please do so. The link to the local giving page is https://localgiving.org/fundraising/ndmj-3peaks. To everyone who has donated so far, we all thank you so, so much and it has really spurred us on to give this our all. Every donation will make a huge difference to the families in need who visit the Thorne and Moorends foodbank and hub. The training has got serious and it’s just three weeks today until we undertake the Three Peaks Challenge. Earlier this week, all four of us decided to head up to Horton in Ribblesdale and attempt to climb one of the three peaks so we know what we are letting ourselves in for. In approximately 3 hours we completed the first peak ; Pen – y – Ghent. This is not going to be an easy for task for me personally that is for sure, and it made me realise I need to up my training even further over the next three weeks. Thanks again for all your support and best wishes. I will let you know how it goes. Nick, Darrel, Mick and John.

Hatfield Community Library I would like to start by informing you that the library renovations will be much later than we believed. We have now heard that they will not be started until 2017/18. I was trying to be super efficient and give everyone plenty of notice but it was a bit too much notice! Ah well c’est la vie. (Learnt that at Lingotots). We have a lot of new events coming up in the next couple of months. (Or longer-I have learned my lesson about time) Some of our summer activities are for children and others are for adults- even if you are young at heart! I hope that you will be able to support your library as we are trying to find a variety of activities which many people can enjoy. July. Thurday 21st Lingotots French 2:30-3:30 (Children and adults) Friday 22nd Lingotots Spanish 10;30-11:30 (Children and adults) Saturday 23rd Art and Crafts Exhibition from 10am onwards There will be books for sale and refreshments available. David Fiennes, the Mayor, will be presenting the library with a donation. Even if you are attending other events please try to find time to call in for a while. Saturday 30th Our Author event features Lynda Stacey who has had her first book ’Keeper of the House’ published. We are hoping that another well known author will be accompanying her. August Tues. 9th Lego Robotics return for summer. It is for girls and boys and involves using laptops to control lego models which the children will make. Watch out for more details. Food will be provided but bring you own bottle. Saturday September 10th Writing workshop with Linda Stacey. All our other classes will be running as usual. We would like to start a Wednesday morning group to play cards, dominoes or scrabble. The relaxing art colouring class will also be available on this morning. Finally, I was given an interesting task by a gentleman from Surrey who rang the library to see if we could help him to find out about the 1944 plane crash (in Hatfield) in which his father died. After some sleuthing, without joy, I happened to mention it to a friend of mine who turned out to have a book which described a plane crash near the Straight Mile! This was just one of many local All Electrical Work Undertaken plane crashes which happened during the war. I Napit Registered Installer passed the information on and hopefully it is the Professional and Reliable Service relevant one. So working in the library is not just FREE Quotes stamping books! The 68th Hatfield Scout group are enjoying a busy summer term with lots of nights away experiences. The scout section had a weekend camp at Squirrel Wood on Eurovision weekend. We were very lucky with the weather and tried our hand at a new experience under expert supervision - Axe throwing!! We used Indian tomahawks and stainless steel throwing angels. The leaders staged an emergency incident for the scouts to rescue an injured scout. We had our own Eurovision camp fire including songs from Wrong Direction ! There are lots of district events for the scouts this term including rock climbing in Derbyshire, a water activities day at Manvers experiencing a wide variety of water based activities, and a backwoods skills camp. Cubs celebrated 100 years of cubs on their second centenary event of the year. Along with 1700 cubs they enjoyed a 4 day camping weekend at Hesley Wood in Sheffield. The event was called Packmania as the idea was to pack in as many activities as they could. In total there were 134 activities, which included, canoeing, kayaking, shooting, climbing walls, trampolining, zip wires, archery, bouncy castles, zorbing, go karting, an outdoor cinema, a circus, a colour dash, a fairground and craft bases. They also took part in the Guinness World Record attempt to blow out the most candles simultaneously! Other cub activities this month have included work towards DIY, cooking, and science badges. Beavers are having a sleepover at the Village Hall in Hatfield Woodhouse at the beginning of July and for some this will be their first night away. A chance to earn some more badges and have fun with friends. The end of the school term will bring a break in scouting meetings as many will be away on holiday, until school starts back in September. It may be an opportunity for some work to begin on the scout hut so if you are able to help the scout group and would like to offer your services, please contact the group. For full section programme details see the website, . If you would like to join our beaver, cub or scout group please contact Sue Lloyd, Beaver Leader, on 07802 875738 or email beavers@68hatfieldscouts.org.uk Beavers are 6-8yrs, Cubs 8-10yrs and Scouts 10-14yrs. All sections are for both boys and girls and meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall during term time on Wednesday evenings. For more information visit our website 68hatfieldscouts.org.uk

Citizens Advice North East Doncaster Citizens Advice North east Doncaster wish to thank Hatfield Town Council for their generous grant of £400. Clouds Community Counselling Service 10th Anniversary Celebration

The new Civic Mayor and Civic Mayoress David and Kathleen Nevett attended one of their first official visits, attending Clouds Community Counselling Service 10th Anniversary Celebration. The Celebration evening was held at the Canal Tavern in Thorne on Saturday the 20th May. Clouds CCS were delighted to receive the Mayer and Mayoress at the celebration. They took an immense interest in the work that Clouds CCS has accomplished and that the Service is now looking after 91 clients at eight different Centres. We all enjoyed the wonderful array of food provided by The Canal Tavern. Karen led a Team to decorate the Function Room which looked wonderful in silver and purple and the Celebratory cakes provided by Karen and Chris were beautiful. Flowers also adorned every table. Many of the Team were involved in the planning and helped put the Display Boards together with the 2006 to 2010 History of Clouds written by Sally. The raffle was provided by Board Members and the Management Team and organised by Janet and £202-00 was raised for funds. Alex kindly provided Indian Deserts to follow the Curry evening Theme. Amongst the Guests for the night were Clouds Trustees, Counsellors, Volunteers and Members of Organisations that have kindly helped Clouds from the past and present over the 10 Year period. After Dinner speeches were given by the Chairman of Clouds Community Counselling Service, Patrick Davies and the Director of Clinical Practice Sally Chamberlain who founded the Organisation in 2006. Patrick thanked a number of the Team for their efforts and went on to praise, and admire Sally for the many years of hard work which had enabled the Service to grow and be where it is today. Sally was warmly thanked and presented with a lovely arrangement of flowers. Sally responded with thanking those who had helped and supported her, particularly Patrick and with a little about the motivation behind the work she has done and the need for the Service to be available to help clients. She said how she had thought they were busy in 2008 with 15 or 20 clients and 5 counsellors and now there are 20 counsellors and 91 clients being looked after and a waiting list. New Practice Manager Rob Jackson then said a few words of gratitude. It was especially pleasing speaking to the guests who provided those very first donations as well as those who provided Free Counselling space to Clouds to enable the Practice to provide this much needed Service to the Community and to those who continue to support Clouds CCS. An extremely enjoyable night was had by all to celebrate the past 10 years, but also looking forward to the next 10 years of Clouds Community Counselling Service serving its Community.

Into Summer at Thorne Camera Club As guinea pigs go, Ken Furmage ARPS ,AFIAP, of Gilberdyke was ideal, as, with his experience in photography spanning many years, his distinctions and his open attitude to change, who better to judge the new style competition. The adoption of the pointless scoring system is designed to encourage rather than discourage members seeking to improve their pictures, and Ken was a great help in this respect. Thorne is not the first to try this, Ken had some experience of it already, so he was undaunted by the prospect. It was generally well received by members. However, that was not the only change being introduced to streamline competitions. Open and Themed sections ran side by side, giving members the option to challenge themselves with a theme or settle for ‘anything - goes’ in the open section, welcomed by less confident members. Knowing no-one was going to score the lowest mark, as there were none, gave everyone a boost, more reticent members competing for the first time. The theme ‘Songs’ seemed to fire everyone’s imagination, and sparked off some community singing ably led by Frances. This was something the judge had definitely not seen, or heard, before, but the Club is not a stuffy club hampered by tradition, nor painfully serious. From forty five entries, Ken chose seven Excellent photographs, by Percy Johnson (2), David Ulyett , Frances McIntosh (+C), Mel Brown (+C2), Lynda Ulyett, and Stephen Wall (+C). Seven prints were Highly Commended from David Ulyett (+C), Lynda Rhodes (2), John Hookway (+C), Norman Pugh (+C), Jim Howard (+C) and Bill Mitchell, and eleven Commended, as above plus Doreen Hookway, Trevor Holt and Colin Jarvis, even though all prints submitted were of a good standard and receive an A grade. His comments, intended to encourage further improvement, came with handy hints and tips. With rousing applause, members appreciated the difficulty of Ken’s task, his efforts to be of service, especially as Ken, aged 82, announced his retirement from judging after over thirty years. Thorne, where he first came as an evacuee in the war, was his last judging assignment. What a pity it was a cake-free night! On Members’Nights, of which there are plans for more, there is sharing of photographs, tutorials, practical sessions, demonstrations, question and answer sessions, all to help members improve their work. Some members regularly enter into online competitions or sites where others vote or comment on their images. Recent examples of how to enhance photographs using available software have proved very useful. The club is moving up a gear. A fish and chip supper was enjoyed on the final evening before the Summer Programme began. In the summer months, it is all practical camera handling, as outings give opportunities to practise camera technique and get advice from other members who are always willing to help, starting with a summer evening stroll by the canal. No unauthorised paddling this time!! A step to the left to get a better angle should always be preceded by a glance to see where your foot will end up, preferably not in the water!! If you are interested in joining the Camera Club, contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

How Big ?? First of all many thanks to all those who supported the Hatfield Litter Pick, without your help and efforts I doubt I would be actually writing anything positive this month. I salute the following - Mr & Mrs Watson, Janet Hofman, Angie and Dan Severn, John & Jill Butterley, Simon Wailing, Sally & Rob Munro, Geordie Pat, Julie Parker, Jack and Antonia from the Bay Horse (pictured), Mr & Mrs Harper, Melanie Cutts, my parents and finally, Lisa Matthews and Steve Chambers (pictured). Steve even came all the way from Hull as he said we had a better class of litter in South Yorkshire. We collected over 20 bags and did our bit for the community, I can’t speak for the others but I felt a certain glow of active satisfaction afterwards, so much so that even finding 2 slices of Hawaiian pizza stuck to my windscreen the following morning didn’t bother me. Thanks, to Pat, Janet and Julie Parker everyone received their much deserved reward and after a shaky start even DMBC came up trumps providing equipment and collection. It was afterwards as we stood in the Barn car park eating our cake that I was told of an incident that happened to one of the collecting group, a Mr John Butterley. John was partnered with his lovely wife Jill, their family golden retriever and her brother with his dog. Sticking to the agreed plan they decided on which areas to concentrate and had been busily collecting rubbish along their travels. At one point John found himself walking along Brabbs Avenue complete with dog lead in his hand and a half full black bin liner stuffed with discarded litter. Busily chatting to his colleagues who had discarded their bags for later collection they turned and headed in the direction of Grange Avenue. In the distance John could see 2 elderly ladies probably in their 90’s who were eagerly chatting between themselves, probably berating Roy Hodgson’s choice of attacking formation or maybe musing over why a centre forward spent all night taking corners. As John and company approached the 2 elderly ladies he could see that both of them had slightly puzzled and worried looks upon their faces, eyeing up the suspicious looking bag, half full and bulging with hidden rubbish. Offering a cheery good morning to the two they walked past heading along the avenue determined to continue with their community task. Morning John one of the ladies responded, nice day today, hope everything’s OK, John smiled and giving a knowing nod of his head. However, the other lady looked down at the black bin liner, looked at John and then pointed at the family dog exclaiming in a serious manner “ Crikey John, how much poo does that dog deliver?, you must be feeding it to well” ? .. John, smiled looked at the dog, gingerly raised the bag with a cheeky smile but didn’t have the heart to explain the full situation. He continued to walk, smiling to himself. And so 8 Butterley bin bags later we all stood as he told his amusing tale. Finally, over the weekend I came to the conclusion that maybe my time is coming to an end regarding my offerings to the Arrow. I can only capture so much and it is becoming harder and harder to think of things to write. Plus, one recent evening I became annoyed with something that I overheard in the pub and took personally. I have always had the opinion that anyone who sticks their head above the parapet must expect to get bullets fired at them and so I was surprised at my reaction. Local politics can be a divisive and fragmenting business, but when some people find it hard to let things go maybe its time for me to go below the parapet. However, there may be time for one more before I sign off for good, watch this space….. PW – AKA The Difference

Active Travis Welcome to our school report, what a month this has been! We have had two sports days, one on upper site and one on lower site, a school visit to Bolsover castle and two netball tournaments. We hope you enjoy our report. Upper site sports day. This was our first sports day in upper school and we thought it was brilliant because there were lots of events and it lasted ALL day. We really enjoyed competing against lots of other people. The first race was sprint which looked fun because you had run really fast to win. We ran the long distance, relay and skipping but there were lots of other races on too. They were really tiring but we still had a good time. Deacon really liked the obstacle race because he liked competing against other people that were faster than him. The afternoon was different because there were several new activities to do and we got mixed up into groups with year 4, 5 and 6. Some of the activities were a bit tricky like Rugby Touchdown because as soon as you got going you had to slow down to touch the cone and sometimes you ran past the cone and missed it. One of our favourite activities was ‘Pile Up The Points’ where you had to collect as many cones as you could into your pile to get loads of house points. We are really looking forward to next year's sports day because this years' was really good fun. Owen and Evie Netball Tournament. First things first, we had to watch the clock to strike 9:30 until we could leave class and get on the bus. We waited nearly an hour until we got to Sheffield, for our South Yorkshire high five Netball tournament. We all walked into the wooden cladded hall, which meant we were finally out of the usual English weather, then we saw the trophy that everyone and I mean everyone wanted it. We walked onto court 3 and suddenly pushed onto the court not knowing that we would win that game. Then another match was expected to come out of us even without a break. We made that match a lucky draw but slightly disappointed because we didn’t make it a win, but we were told we did well. We had to play another match without a break. Unfortunately we lost this this match against the winners. After that we had to watch the finals against 2 schools who would go to the Yorkshire finals. Then it was over, and go back to school seven place in the tournament, and then we got back to school from the bus. Thomas Our Curriculum. This year, in year 6, we have been taught lots of new skills in writing due to changes in the curriculum. We were worried about learning a whole new curriculum, but after we put our minds to it – it wasn’t as bad as we thought. There have been higher standards in punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure and spelling. We are now being moderated on our writing abilities, using the new curriculum and feel like we have worked very hard to get to where we are today. We have created writing portfolio’s called ‘pride folders’ and are pleased with the work that has gone into them. Ender and Eve Brilliant Bolsover Castle. On Friday 10th June, Year 2 went to the amazing Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire. We went because we were learning about castles. There are 2 parts to the castle, a ruined old part and then the Little Castle which is not actually little, it is quite large. The Little Castle has 4 floors with the Lantern at the very top and the kitchens at the bottom. The garden has a foundation that people put money into when they make wishes. The ruins have creaky, wooden stairs that we had to go down to get to the dungeons. There was also lots of chimneys. At lunchtime we got to play in the playground where there was a long, metal slide, a swing set and a ‘little’ castle. Jake said “My favourite part was when we got to go into the star-chamber because I got to sit on the throne.” Emily said “I liked going down the spiral staircase, there were 97 steps!” Maisie said “Sadly I couldn’t go because I was unwell, but if I went I would have wanted to see the statue of Hercules holding up the castle.” Have you been to the amazing Bolsover Castle? Maisie, Emily, Jake

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News For this month’s Arrow article we thought we’d like to tell you all about maths at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School and then share some of the events happening in school this month. Maths at Hatfield Woodhouse Making maths fun and real is a priority for us! We strive to ensure that every child in Hatfield Woodhouse has a can do attitude to maths. Our commitment to this ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed. The journey begins in foundation stage where Mrs Phillips and Mrs Kantecki make sure our children gets lots of hands on practical activities. Children count snakes, frogs, bears, fish and have even been known to count worms! Our children particularly enjoy outdoors maths and playing with the giant Numicom is great fun! All children from year 1 to year 6 take part in CLIC sessions where they become fluent in basic maths skills including counting, place value, times tables, and the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Their learning is put to the test in weekly Beat That challenges where the children aim to beat their previous score. Success is celebrated in our Friday celebration assembly where the children receive certificates. Maths homework has also seen changes for us this year and is now regularly set by teachers on MYMaths which is an internet based programme providing online lessons for extra support. The children have really enjoyed doing their homework and lots of parents have made positive comments on how helpful the online lessons can be. The message at our school is very clear, maths is magic! Sing Out On Wednesday 15th June our choir performed fabulously as part of a combined choir of 500 children at Doncaster Dome. The children enjoyed singing the songs written by Doncaster schools and performed with a live rock band. They were inspired by the Doncaster Concert Band who also took part in the concert. We were proud of the enthusiasm they showed, as well as the quality of their singing and actions. Queen’s Birthday Picnic We were fortunate that the rain held off on Friday 17th June to enable us to hold a picnic and family day in celebration of the Queen’s Birthday. Mrs Holgate put on a tremendous spread for parents and children which was followed by activities such a programming on the ipads, sport and painting family portraits.

A great time was had by all! Thank-you to all those who were able to support the event.
