Editors Letter‌..
Welcome to the March issue of The Hatfield Arrow. This month we have lots of news and articles, which is great. Please keep sending in your information. My details are below. Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. The cost for advertising in the Business Directory is ÂŁ30 plus vat for a 12 month entry. Please contact me if you would like your business details including. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday March 16th.

News, News, News, News, News…. HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY Once again we had the pleasure of welcoming Lee Plevey to the Society’s meeting on Tuesday 2 February at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Lee lives locally and his family run Plevey’s Garden Centre in Doncaster. Lee is one of the judges at our Spring and Autumn Shows, and this time he was talking about the what he looks for when judging in the Autumn Show. He used the schedule for the next one as the basis of the presentation, and went through each class in the Vegetable and Fruit sections. Lee highlighted what he particularly looks for in each class, with the word “uniformity” featuring in all classes where more that one item of the same vegetable or fruit is required. He illustrated his talk liberally with samples of vegetables, seeds, and printed illustrations. Questions from the audience were answered during and after the presentation, and on more general gardening questions after the formal end of the meeting. There was lots of useful information for show exhibitors in this presentation, and everybody present enjoyed the event. Our next meeting will be Tuesday March 1 at Hatfield Club. The speaker will be Paul Robinson and the subject will be “The Spring Garden with the Laughing Gardener. Everybody is welcome to the meeting.

CHICKENS Easter is almost here and so lots of people are starting to think about eggs. What can be better than fresh eggs straight from our own back garden? Lots of people now keep chickens, not only for their superb egg laying but also as they make fantastic family pets! CHOOSING A CHICKEN First you will need to choose a breed. There are over 100 breeds of chickens but also many hybrids which often incorporate the best of several of these (such as good temperament and excellent egg laying). You also want to make sure you purchase from a reputable supplier –The Poultry Club website can help with this. When choosing your new chickens, look at the surroundings –are they clean and well kept? Are the chickens active and scratching around? Healthy chickens should be bright, alert and scratching around. Their vent (or bottom!) should be clean, and the feathers should not be stuck together. Their eyes should be bright and open, and their nostrils should be clear and free from any discharge. Check their legs are smooth (raised/thickened scales could be indicative of ‘scaly leg’) and look for signs of mites/lice on the skin (often about 1mm long, pale yellow/brown and scurrying around!). Their feet should also be clean and free from sores. Once you have chosen your new birds, ask if they have been wormed recently. If not, you should consider worming with Flubenvet. If you will be introducing to an existing flock, always quarantine for 2-3weeks beforehand. CARE OF YOUR CHICKENS Although your chickens will love scratching around, finding the odd worm amongst grasses, their staple diet should be a commercial mash or pellet formula, which has all the nutrients they need for growing and laying. You should also be aware that due to the risk of spreading disease (particularly viruses, including Avian Influenza), there is a ban on feeding kitchen scraps to pet chickens. You can however buy them treats from the supermarket (vegetables etc), which providing they do not pass (even unopened!) through your kitchen, are perfectly legal to feed your new girls! You should also provide your chickens with fresh drinking water every day. Regular cleaning of your chickens’ hutch will keep the bacteria and parasites (lice and mites) to a minimum. There are many suitable disinfectants for animal housing, just ask your local feed supplier and they will be more than happy to help!

As you can see from the pictures it was a great night at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall on the 23rd January 2016. 130 tickets were sold, £280 was given in donations and the auction ably led by John Brown with help from his wife, Geordie Pat and others raised £680. After expenses of £74 were deducted the two charities' Doctors Without Borders' and 'Loving Humanity' received donations of £768 each. The Pensionaires were brilliant with a mixture of songs to sing to and jokes.. Many thanks to Julie Parker, Sandra Brooke and Kath Watson for providing the savouries. Anne Kitchen, Jill Southgate, Pat Johnson, Colin Hepworth, Richard and Lucy for helping set up, sons Andy and Dave for the lifting and shifting. Peter for being a very efficient and light hearted compere and a special thanks to Mandy and Sally for managing the wine bar. And lastly to Colin for providing the wine and support. I can remember very little of the events of the night but I do remember feeling so happy I shed a few tears seeing so many people from our villages at a communal event they made fantastic by their enthusiastic participation. The pictures speak for themselves Yvonne Wright
I have received an e mail from Loving Humanity they are obtaining export licences from Indian authorities for the machines and the raw materials are on the way from Turkey to make reusable nappies should be in the camps sometime in February. Letter from MSF thanking us for the donation and telling me how difficult the situation is in Southern Sudan with the war and famine and how stretched financially they are.

Hatfield Community Library We are grateful for the heat in the library at this time of year, at least for the first hour then we have to turn the heating off before everyone melts. So if you want to save on your heating bill join us in the library. Come in and read one of the free newspapers or browse through the books or bring something in to do whilst having a coffee and biscuit. I like Jenny’s idea at Thorne to have a therapeutic colouring in group. (Might even pinch it if any-one round here would like to start a group!!) On the subject of books, all the libraries have been having a swap round so we have some ‘new to us books’ on the shelves as well as some real new books. Our new DMBC supporter, Jonathan, has been spending our grant to improve the library stock. Don’t forget if we do not have the book on our shelves, we can order it for you. Every so often we have a list of new books which are about to be published and can be ordered before they come out. The list for February has just come in so next time you come in have a look to see if there any new books by your favourite author. I have become addicted to M.C. Beaton’s Agatha Raison books. (I don’t know why as the woman really irritates me. I suppose it’s like starting a box of chocolates, once open you just keep eating them) I have a seemingly endless supply of them from the library service. Books can be renewed or ordered over the phone or by email. We can also be found on Facebook and Streetlife if you want to see what is happening at the library. We had a lovely start to February as on the first three days we were visited by the children from Crookesbroom Academy. The Literacy team came in to read stories and tell the children about the library. I would like to compliment the school on the good behaviour of all the children (and staff). I hope some of them will become members of the library. We also welcomed the Local History group to the library to look at some of our local history resources. (They were also well behaved) It was lovely to see some new children at storytime this month. The age range is from the very young to nursery age. We don’t mind if children have to wander round the library at times and you don’t have to be a library member to come along. Finally we are again pleased to be helping out in the community by being a collection point for the DN7 Food Bank. This initiative was started by the church but now involves other organisations. There is a small bin in the library where people can donate food. There is also a list of the kind of foods which can be donated. Seeing Red at Thorne Camera Club Some people associate 'seeing red' with being angry, and there has been quite a lot of red about at the Camera Club recently, thankfully most of it in the images members produced for a friendly competition with a theme 'A Touch of Red'. In the absence of a guest judge, members found it a difficult task ,faced with around sixty photographs of various subjects, to assess, appraise and score, with just a minute or so for each one. With a great deal of concentrated study, each image was given a mark by each member, who then selected five high scoring images. The adjudicators worked out which photos scored best overall. As members know, everyone in the room has a different opinion, based on experience, knowledge, subject matter, the treatment and most of all, the feelings of the observer. So train spotters may give a train image an extra mark or two, while bird fanciers favour bird pictures. Without the wise and constructive comments usually offered by visiting judges, high scorers were David Ulyett, 'Rough Day at Sea', Patricia Woodward, 'Alaskan Sunset' and Lynda Ulyett, 'Flowers of Flanders'. Since the extended winter break, new committee members have joined the team, and roles have been shared more equally. At an EGM David Ulyett, who formed the club along with Lynda, three years ago, was voted to continue as Chairman a little longer, with Lynda as Secretary and Publicity Officer, while Jim Howard acts as Vice Chairman and Frances McIntosh as Treasurer. In his second term on the committee, John Marshall is Programme Secretary, with newcomers Graham Linley Competition Secretary and Ash Gerrard BA as Technical IT Co-ordinator. There are still roles to be filled if members wish to step forward and do their bit for the club. Doreen Hookway is doing sterling work as Refreshments Supervisor, but there is no Social Secretary, Exhibition Secretary or Fundraiser at present. However, the club is running smoothly with members helping out where they can, setting up, clearing away, delivering posters, helping in the kitchen etc, and there is a very positive, friendly atmosphere. An invitation for the club to enter the 9th Sheffield Photographic Society Annual Knockout Competition has been received. A large number of Yorkshire clubs, around thirty, enter five images each. It is an interesting and entertaining evening, with members on the edge of their seats, hoping not to be knocked out before the final round. Last year Thorne entered for the first time and did reasonably well, coming 22nd out of 28 clubs, so not a disgrace. Naturally they want to do better this time. Any photographers, experienced or not, are welcome at the club. Details can be obtained by phoning or texting 07463821182 , speak to David, or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News Hello again and welcome to this month’s feature from Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. We can’t believe where the year is going –half term is almost upon us as we prepare our news. This month we focus on Year 2 and Year 4 as well as information about the choir’s trip to ‘Young Voices 2016.’ Focus on Year 2 – Super Squirrels Ahoy there! Our topic this half term has been Land Ahoy. We have been learning about famous explorers like Captain Cook and the real life hero Grace Darling. We have been writing newspaper reports about the heroic rescue Grace and her father performed at Longstone Lighthouse as well as writing character descriptions to describe some pesky pirates. Lots of children have made wonderful treasure boxes at home and some have even brought the booty into school to share. Mr Bradbury came into school and spoke to us about life on the sea and the different places he had visited. We had a lovely time looking at the pictures, checking out his telescope and sharing his treasure of chocolate coins. Our final event was Pirate Day! We came to school dressed as pirates for the day and then invited our parents in at the end of the day to perform our pirate dance and share our treasure biscuits. We have really enjoyed this topic and learnt lots of interesting things! Focus on Year 4 - Clever Chameleons In Year 4 we are currently enjoying our fantastic topic ‘Blue Abyss’. We are learning all about the world’s oceans and seas. The main focus of our topic is art, so we have been looking at a range of forms including sketching, pastel work and sculptures. Mason Fielder created an amazing piece – see above! As well as art, we have been researching the oceans and creating some really imaginative homework projects with our parents, for example quizzes for the class to complete. Additionally, we have been writing our own adventure stories, focusing on our SPAG skills, using inverted commas and fronted adverbial phrases! We were also lucky enough to enjoy a visit to The Deep in Hull. We took part in a workshop and discovered that corals are actually animals and not plants or rocks! We also saw some amazing creatures including penguins, green saw fish and sharks! The best part was being able to touch star fish! This term our class have also been really interested in riddles, so here is one for you to ponder: A man was murdered in his round house. There were three suspects with alibis. The gardener was cutting the grass. The maid was dusting the corners. The chef was cooking in the kitchen. Who was it? Note the riddle answer is at the bottom of the article! Thanks for reading our news! Riddle answer: The maid – there are no corners in a round house! Young Voices 2016 On Monday January 18th twenty seven children from Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School shared a bus with Crookesbroom Academy to go to Sheffield Arena to take part in a 5000 student choir called Young Voices 2016. The children commented that it was one of the best nights they had ever had and their favourite song compilations were ‘Gospel Train’ a mix of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’, ‘When the Saints go Marching In’ and ‘Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho’ They also particularly enjoyed the song

‘Power in Me’. It was a late night home but worth every moment. The reason the children thought ‘Young Voices’ was amazing was because of the entertainers such as Beat Box, Laura Wright and Tom Billington, who joined them in singing modern and traditional song compilations. Laura Wright is famous for being the official anthem singer for the England Rugby Team and has been heavily involved in the Rugby World Cup 2015 including performances at the World Cup Trophy Tour, Rugby Captain’s dinner, England’s Welcoming Ceremony at Sandhurst, the send off for the England team (alongside Take That and other celebrities) and even scaling the roof of the O2 for a rendition of ‘Jerusalem’ during the world’s biggest projection! She could hold notes for an impressively long time and the children joined in with the chorus of ‘The world in union’ and the actions and grunts from the Hakka. It was lots of fun. There were incredible street dancers called Urban Strides, who directed the children in dance moves to accompany their singing. Their favourite dance moves were to ‘Uptown Funk’ Urban Strides opened up the show in spectacular style dancing to ‘Sax’ but the best part for their parents in the audience was hearing the children sing in harmony with thousands of other children and enjoying the joy on their faces through a pair of binoculars in the enormous crowd. New Year Activities at Travis. In this report, you will read about how some of the upper site children have been helping the lower site children with their maths work. It will also inform you about our new Spring 1 topics including an exciting trip from Year Two. We hope you enjoy our report.
Year Six Maths Workshop Year Six and Year Five children have been invited down to lower site to work with the Year One and Two children with their maths work. They are helping in something called “Maths Workshop.” Ellie is one of the children who has been helping and here are her thoughts. “We had to do all different types of Maths games and explain it clearly to the children. We also had to write down how they did within the lesson and tell them what they could improve on. It was a challenge because some children needed more support than we thought.” Their support has really helped. Ellie
Year 4/5 Class Collective Worship
Every class has the opportunity to perform a class collective worship in church in front of the whole school and their parents. This half term it was the turn of one of our Year Four and Five classes. Representatives from these classes would like to share their experiences. “Our Class Collective worship was about persevering and having goals in life. We worked really hard on practising our words for both singing and speaking. The song was tricky to learn but we got there in the end. The parents really enjoyed it!” By Cady and Cayden, Tom and Grace
Notorious Nineties
At upper site, in Spring 1, each year group learns about a different decade. In Year Three, their decade is the Notorious Nineties and they have had a wonderful time learning about the fashion, technology and music. Owen and Evie would like to tell you about what they have learnt about the topic. “We have really enjoyed designing our own nineties model and making peg dolls. The dress up day at the end of the term was fantastic. There were some really cool outfits especially ‘The Back Street Boys’.” By Owen and Evie
Emergency Services
On Wednesday 3rd February, Year 2 went on a visit to the Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield. Our topic has been the Great Fire of London and we wanted to know how ‘fire-fighting’ has changed throughout history. When we arrived at the Museum we had to climb lots of wobbly concreate steps to the classroom. Rabbit class then went to explore the museum whilst Hedgehog went into the history room with Clara. With Clara we learnt about the different uniforms that the fire-fighters used to wear. Daniel wore the 1666 uniform which was just a floppy hat and a fabric coat. Charley and Emily wore the most modern uniform which had fire retardant material, a hard hat with a visor and protective gloves and shoes. At the end we all got to try on the different uniforms. After lunch, we swapped over so that Rabbit class went into the history room and we went to explore the museum. At the end of the day, we had a surprise. We stood at the bottom of the pole looking up and just then two of the fire fighters came down the huge pole, it was very exciting. We had a lovely time at the museum. You should visit there it is great. Hedgehog and Rabbit Class. We hope you enjoyed our report. In our next report you will hear about our new Nursery outdoor area.

Haemophilia Society & Coppice School Fund Raising Evening held at the Blue Bell, Hatfield, Tuesday 2nd February 2016. By kind permission of Dave (landlord) a fund raising evening was held in support of the above charities. A total of 96 personnel were in attendance, which in itself, made for an extremely successful evening and I truly believe, an evening fully enjoyed by all ! The main entertainment was “ Dr Jive “ with songs and instrumentals from the 50s 60s and 70s. A grand raffle was also part of the events, then “Peter Wright “ produced a quick fire quiz and he followed that up with a creditable auction, truly his talents knows no bounds! (thank you Peter). It would be impossible to thank all the people who supported the evening, not only with their attendance, but for their contributions to the raffle/auction, but, special thanks go out to Chris & Nick Skelton, Andrew Fisher (of Sensible Home Insurance), Sue Fisher (Upsy Daisy Florist & Hampers) and the management of Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Finally, a special mention must go to “Leanne Willey”! a lady who worked tirelessly both before and during the evening. She sold numerous amounts of entrance tickets, obtaining contributions for the raffle etc; and also spent a good part of the night selling raffle tickets. she is an absolute star and a pleasure to work with! A big thank you to “Malc Liddle” who had no idea he was to be pressed ganged into working (something he has forgotten how to do). In total £1,200 was the resulting amount raised during the evening. £800 is going to the Haemophilia Society and £400 to Coppice School. Over the past 10 days this community has raised between “Yvonne & Colin Wright’s” Loving Humanity & MSF entertainment evening, which totalled £1,600, and the above, £2,800, along with continuing charities within Hatfield I believe this village should be extremely proud of the work that you all do! Gordon Harper, Station Road, Hatfield.
The 68th Hatfield Scout group
have started the new year with a packed programme and this year we are intending to bring our Scout Hut in Hatfield village back into use. We will still need to use the village hall and grounds for many activities, but there are some things that we aren’t able to do there, which includes cooking on our gas stoves amongst other things. We will be relying on help from parents and any other interested people who will be able to offer their time and expertise to help the group revive our old building. Our immediate needs include a plumber to oversee the reinstatement of water to the building. If you are able to help the scout group and would like to offer your services, please contact the group. Each section has a busy programme for this coming term, for full details see the website, but we have bounced into the new year. Beavers had a very successful “bring a friend “evening where they played lots of games and sang a few camp songs. Cubs have already had a night hike at Sandall Beat Wood using torches, and Scouts attended the AVID ceilidh held at the village hall and learned how to dance. Great fun was had by all learning new moves and discovering what an energetic event it is. We are having a race night at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall on April 16th for Scouts and Friends of Scouts. Everyone is welcome, tickets available soon! If you would like to join our beaver, cub or scout group please contact Sue Lloyd, Beaver Leader, on 07802 875738 or email beavers@68hatfieldscouts.org.uk Beavers are 6-8yrs, Cubs 8-10yrs and Scouts 10-14yrs. All sections are for both boys and girls and meet at Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall during term time on Wednesday evenings. For more information visit our website 68hatfieldscouts.org.uk

An Interview With The Difference In January, mum organised a charity function (details of which will be in this Arrow) and as part of the fundraising I auctioned off an “Interview with the Difference”. Thanks to some canny bidding by her mum and sister, this was won for Katy, owner of Handgelic Nails in Hatfield (pictured). And so, here is an interview with local business woman and key member of Hatfield Rounders Team Katy Stimson…. What is your first Yorkshire memory? Going to watch my dad play cricket for Hatfield Main, Sarah and I helping mum to do the cricket teas we loved it!. Dad being captain and an amazing player also helped the childhood experience. However, one of my fondest memories was going to pick my dad up from Hatfield Main pit. My sister Sarah and I would hide behind the car seats (sometimes it was 10pm as mum had to wake us up as back then as families only had one car if they were lucky) and dad would get in and say "where are the girls", mum would say "I don’t know". Then we would appear and he would pretend to jump out of his skin! Then give us both a vanilla slice! I also remember standing at the end of the pit corridor once and I could hear all the men showering including my dad! When he saw us he stopped dead and said "How long have you been there! Ha, long enough dad! xx What is your favourite part of Doncaster? Has to be Hatfield and the community spirit. After living down south for the best part of 15 years and moving back in 2009, having people say 'I heard you were back' etc etc, it was very touching and welcoming. It didn’t take long to feel right back at home. What is your idea of a perfect weekend in Yorkshire? Spending time at home, watching my son Harvey play rugby on a Sunday morning for Doncaster Knights and cooking a meal for family in the afternoon. Oh and of course a trip to the Mumbai in Stainforth if possible. Do you have a favourite walk or view in Yorkshire? We love to take Alfie the dog around lakes at Hatfield Moors. We always get lost but there are some lovely views and places to have a picnic. What Yorkshire sportsperson past or present would you like to take for lunch? Jessica Ennis - I would like to ask her if she finds juggling a son, a dog, a partner, work and general life as challenging as myself! Which Yorkshire stage or screen star would you like to take for dinner? Jeremy Clarkson - I reckon we would fall out! Or maybe Louis Tomlinson from One Direction - His Grandad drove me to my wedding in his luxury Taxi probably before he was born; it could be the icebreaker before I ask him out on a date! If you had to name your “Doncaster” hidden gem what would it be? My shop! Handgelic Nails & Beauty. We constantly get complimented about how friendly and welcoming we are. It’s always clean and freshly decorated. We use top products to do top services. All customers are valued and many have become friends. Fantastic customer service is our top priority along with fantastic Nail & Beauty treatments. How do you describe Hatfield to people outside of the county I always say how friendly we are, and just describe how people say hello in the street even if they don’t know each other. I would usually end up talking about the Bay Horse too and what a great atmosphere there is especially on a Sunday night. It just gives them a bit more of an idea what us Yorkshire lot are like. What do you think gives Yorkshire its unique identity? Our accent and friendliness. A lot of women are on the same nail schedule, i.e. every 2 weeks, so quite often they are in the salon at the same time, they talk like life long friends and ask about things

they discussed last time! You definitely don’t get that everywhere. Do you have a favourite local restaurant? Do you need to ask! The Mumbai, for me its all about the service as well as the gorgeous food! Every single member of staff acknowledges you like a life long customer, whether you go a lot or its your first time. Who is the person from Yorkshire that you most admire? My mum and dad. They have supported me in every way whether I have made good decisions or bad. They were both very hardworking, mum a local teacher, dad an engineer in later life. I have had the best upbringing you could wish for and even during financially difficult times for them I never felt deprived of anything, especially love. If I can bring my son up the same way I will be very happy. Mum deserves a medal by the way! How do you think coming from Yorkshire has shaped you as a business woman? My parents have brought me up with the right attitude to work and my dad being a former Yorkshire Miner knows the real meaning of hard work! How has your first year gone running Handgelic Nails? There have been lots of challenges, I’ve learnt a lot of lessons but I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s doing great thanks If you could give one bit of advice to anyone thinking of starting a business what would that be? Be prepared to work very hard and give up precious time with loved ones. I saw a note at the bottom of a calendar in 2009; it read" The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work". After a few tough years I decided to go for it and work for myself. I still have this cellotaped to a file now. I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family though and of course The Royal Bank of Mum and Dad! What would you say your future dream would be for Handgelic Nails ? I want a property somewhere very local to where we are but a lot bigger. I want to make a one stop shop for both men and woman for all aspects of Nail & Beauty and possible hair services. I want to be the best in it all. And so there you have it… why not call in and see what Katy and her team can do for you… Katy and her team are a fab bunch and are working hard to make Handgelic Nails a success – good luck… PW AKA The Difference

JODIE GRANT, Womans British FIS Indoors and Outdoors Duals Moguls Ski Champion lands sponsorship deal with Airkings Trampoline Park, Doncaster. Jodie age 15 from Old Cantley is very excited to be offered a sponsorship deal with Airkings. Airkings opened in October 2015 and is fast becoming a popular place for everyone of all ages to have fun and to exercise at the same time. Jodie says “It is the ideal place for me to practice my skills on the trampoline before I put down my tricks on the mountains. The airbag is an ideal platform to perfect my landing position, not only is it fun but it is great exercise and a good way of keeping fit in preparation for the long days on the ski slope”. “I am getting ready for 4 weeks training followed by a week of competition (The Brits) in Laax, Switzerland in early April. Coming back from injury I have had nearly 8 weeks off so I need to concentrate on my fitness levels and technical tricks”. Jodie is also training with the Moguls Team based in the Netherlands with her coach Mr Tjeerd Terpstra. Mr Terpstra says “Jodie has a great future in winter sports. I am based in the Netherlands and will monitor Jodie’s technical and physical training through video and one or two visits to the UK in the summer. I am looking forward to working with Jodie next season taking her to competitions in Europe”. Airkings says “We want to play a part in Jodie's journey and think the offer of sponsorship to use the park will be a perfect way to enhance her skills. It will be great to sponsor a local girl and to watch her progression in the years to come”. TO BOOK YOUR SESSION like Airkings on FB or visit their website: www.airkings.co.uk
