News, News, News, News, News…. HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY. Martyn Johnson was the guest speaker at the last meeting of the Society. This was held on Tuesday 5 April at the usual venue, Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Martyn’s talk was entitled, ‘How the book “Black Diamonds” was made’. He started by telling us about his early career in the Police Force, starting in Sheffield. After retirement from the Force he set up his own security company in Wentworth Woodhouse, and through that became involved in work at “the Big House”. One of the results of this was that he met the author of the book and helped her in the research work. This included opening doors for her to meet local people, and all the relevant places. Finally, after over four years of work, Martyn and his family were invited to the book launch in London. The whole talk was interspersed with anecdotes and jokes which he kept the audience laughing. This was a very enjoyable evening. The next meeting is on Tuesday 3 May. For the past few years the May meeting has been a plant sale where members and guests have brought their spare plants to sell, but this year the big plant sale will be in October. But so there is still an outlet, there will be a small pant sale at all future meetings. So if members and guests have seedlings, plants or garden magazines for sale, bring them along and they will be sold, proceeds to the Society’s funds. Now back to next month’s speaker. On Tuesday 3 May our guest will be Stephen Gay who will be taking us on another of his railway journeys. he meeting will be at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7pm. Everyone is invited to attend.

Trip to Rwanda
From 10th–18th February I visited Rwanda, in Africa. I travelled as part of a trip organised by Christian child development charity, Compassion UK. Compassion works with children in 26 of the world’s poorest countries. I went to meet the child I sponsor; a 17 year old boy called Uwiduhaye. His house, which he built with his neighbour, has mud walls and a corrugated iron roof, a living room and a small bedroom that all his family share. There is no furniture, windows, electricity or running water and the toilet is a hole in the ground used by many people in his village. His meals consist of rice, beans, potatoes and bananas. Sometimes he has no food to eat. Each year I send Christmas and birthday gifts. Last year he bought a door for his home, toothpaste and a goat. Uwiduhaye is still in year 5 at primary school because he was unable to start school until he was 8 and has missed so much whilst caring for his sick mother. In Rwanda students take a test which determines if they get a promotion to the next year group or fail and have to repeat the year. Next year Uwiduhaye will learn a vocational skill like weaving, joinery or farming so that he can earn a living. I pay £25 a month for Uwiduhaye’s education, healthcare, food and clothing as well as his attendance at the Saturday Compassion Project Day where he plays with his friends, learns about the Christian faith and receives social and emotional care and development. I visited a project and experienced Rwandan singing and dancing, watched lessons and served meals. The children were so joyful and loved the bubbles and balloons we took which they had never seen before! Life is very different in Rwanda but the people are so welcoming and care greatly for their country and communities. They do not take things for granted and are so thankful for every meal and each new day. The experience was emotional and heart-breaking but their warmness, love and faith filled me with such emotion. I cannot begin to describe how it has enriched my life and made me realise how lucky we are.

Hatfield Community Library It was lovely to have the library full of excited children during our Easter Activities- Sam’s Safaris, Kimmo and Science Boffins. Children have handled scary animals (snakes are scary right?), been in stitches (the laughing sort) and taken part in experiments. (The library is still standing). I think we will certainly be booking some of them for the Summer holidays. Visitors passing the library on a bus may have had their attention caught by bright red coloured objects when looking through the window. These are our new chairs for people to sit when browsing or reading the papers. They are slightly higher than the other ones and easier to get up from. Hopefully a new higher coffee table will follow soon. We have had the 1914-1918 display in the library for a while and it generated a lot of interest. Courses, Monday - Lingotots 4:00-4:45pm (full at the moment but please put names down if interested), Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Tuesday - Art Class 10:00-12:30, Pre-School Storytime 2:00-2.30pm (inc. Nursery age children) Bring your children along to listen to a story, do an activity and enjoy some refreshments. Yoga 6:30-8:00pm, Readers’ Group (last Tues of the month) 5:00-5:45pm Wednesday - Chair Yoga 3:00-4:00pm, Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm, Yoga 6:30-8:00pm Friday - Readers’ Group (last Fri of the month) 10:30-12:30 Needles and Pins twice a month NEW I-pad/tablet taster course. Monday April 4th 10:00-12:00 This course is quite full but please ring to put your name down for another course. Relaxing Colouring in group, Wednesday mornings or Friday afternoons depending on interest. Family History taster session. To be arranged after Easter depending on interest. Please ring the library to book any of the above events. Don’t forget you can find the library on our Facebook site and we post our events on Streetlife Now the children are back at school the library will be a bit quieter but hopefully our younger borrowers will find time to come in after school. We are open until 5pm every day except Wednesday when we close at 1pm and Saturday when we close at 12. At the end of April and the beginning of May we will be hosting the Greenaway Illustration competition which is a collaboration between Hungerhill School and the Literacy Team. On June 14th a walk will held on Hatfield Moors. This will be to raise funds for the Deputy Mayor David Fiennes’ chosen Charity the Alzheimer Society. Councillor Pat Sanderson, one of our volunteers, will be putting up posters with more details nearer the time. The library notice boards have lots of notices about local events, educational courses and entertainment. We also have lots of leaflets on those subjects. And finally I have found a diet which I might be able to do. A daily paper has suggested fasting at various times of the day. I am going to do the overnight fast as I think I can cope with that. Special Guests at Thorne Camera Club A group of very special ladies were invited to enjoy an evening's entertainment at the Camera Club recently. Twenty members of Thorne Trefoil Guild, though not wined and dined, were fed and watered during a showing of the latest Audio Visual presentations by Club members. Tea and coffee were served accompanied by a selection of delicious cakes, muffins and tarts cooked by Doreen and her team. The AVs varied from nature in all its splendour to thought provoking themes such as recycling, lifestyle changes, care for the elderly and the futility of war. Quite a selection, the guests agreed, and all enjoyable in different ways. The music element was cause for singing, comedy elements caused some laughter, and all in an atmosphere of friendship and fun. Another special lady came to visit, too. Sally Sallett ARPS CPAGB, past President of Wakefield Camera Club, brought some of her work. She explained how the system of photographic distinctions works, and how she produced her winning panels. Sally loves flowers, and creates photos with an artistic feel about them, in the style of some of the Old Masters. She tried to encourage some of the more experienced members to have a go at gaining a distinction themselves. Showing work of a very different nature, Andrew Foley from Mexborough brought panels of monochrome prints, with the occasional colour thrown in, to demonstrate his own personal take on photography. He is not an advocate of gaining distinctions as he feels this can stifle individuality, and his work was definitely of a very unusual style. He is a very thoughtful person and this showed in his work, especially his panel of garden implements which he produced as a memorial to his late grandfather who had owned the tools. Finally, Thorne’s visit to Sheffield Photographic Society’s 9th Annual Knock Out Competition. Quite a few members made the trip to the lovely venue in St Luke’s Church, a relatively modern, octagonal building with tiers of red, plush bench seats. The members were quite confident that they had produced some good work which would hopefully reach at least the second round, as last year. Unfortunately, they were up against some stiff opposition, everyone had upped their game in an attempt to beat last years winners. In the event, this was achieved, but sadly not by Thorne Camera Club who were knocked out in the first round, although the judge, Adrian Lines ( with lots of letters ) made some nice comments about the entries. Anyone with an interest in Photography will be made most welcome at the Club meetings on Monday evenings, at the Methodist Church Hall until the Summer Outings start at the end of May. Contact 07463821182 for more information or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News We have been back at school for a couple of weeks since the Easter holiday and time seems to have disappeared in a flurry of SATS papers and revision timetables. Our Year 2 and 6 children are working hard to prepare for their tests in May. Year 6 children are attending after school booster classes, as well as focussing on their lessons. Both year groups are benefitting from the one-to-one tuition our dedicated teachers are offering at lunchtimes. Coffee Morning A big thank-you to members of Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Chapel who ran a coffee morning recently to raise money for school funds supported by our PTA. Over £200 was raised through a cake stall, tombola, raffle and a fabulous café-service of teas, coffees and bacon sandwiches. We think the village is very fortunate to have such a busy, friendly coffee morning at the chapel every Saturday morning. If you have never been before, we can highly recommend it. Do try it out! Visitors to our Classroom - By Year 5 In Year 5 (Snow leopards class) as part of our new topic ‘Beast Creator’ something beastly happened - we were visited by Sam’s Safari for an animal extravaganza! We met an army of animals and Izzy (from Sam’s Safari), explained the fascinating facts about the mind-blowing mini-beasts and their predators, which came from all over the world. We saw sunshine beetles, a millipede, a frog, a hedgehog, giant snails and some stick insects (from Australia) called Twiggy and Twiglet! Last and certainly not least, we met a hairy armadillo! We got a chance to hold the animals and we had a fantastic time! Artists Extraordinaire! - By Year 3 This half term in year 3 our topic is ‘Urban Pioneers’ which focuses on the subjects of Art and Design. We are currently researching and completing work on the artist Andy Wahol. We have been designing our soup can designs to mirrors the famous ‘Campbells’ soup pieces of art work that Andy Wahol designed. The photos are our works of art which we created after first doing some work in our topic books, looking at which colours go nicely together. Also we have tried out a famous technique used by Andy Wahol called the blotted line technique to draw famous people then use water colours to paint them. Can you tell who they are?
In the next few weeks we are going to continue looking at different pieces of art and researching the pros and cons of graffiti art and in English we will be writing a letter to the local council to express our views on graffiti. I hope you enjoyed reading our news. See you next month to tell you more about our summer activities! H Acton

School Trips at Travis
Welcome to our recent report. We have had a busy time at Travis St Lawrence, with the Year 3 children going on a school visit to Austerfield, Year 6 to Crucial Crew and the Year 4 and 5 taking part in a wonderful Easter service. This half term, we also have a new member to our school team, Mrs Adair is our new executive head teacher for this term and the Year 2 children interviewed her. Amazing Austerfield. - The Year 3’s trip to Austerfield was a great success! We worked inside during the morning sessions looking at rocks. This was to help us with our science topic ‘rocks and fossils’. It was very interesting and we got to hold and feel how soft and hard different rocks were. We even got to see how a volcano worked! In the afternoon, we worked both inside and outside. Outside, we went to the quarry and we looked at different types of sands. We went into the old part of the quarry to get a feel of what the soil’s texture was like. We also learned about manure and how it was good for growing plants. Evie and Owen Our moving Easter service. - Last term, at St Lawrence Church, Year 4 and Year 5 delivered a lovely Easter service. Year 4 talked about why Easter was special to them and what is was all about. Some of us had written poems that we read out in front of a large crowd. It was a really nice occasion because what we said made people think deeply about the real meaning of Easter. At the end, both the vicar and Mrs McAllister said it was one of the best services they had attended. Cayden and Cady Busy Bike-ability - Year 5 completed their ‘bike-ability training’ last term with Roger and Sharon who came in to teach us road safety and how we use our bikes on the road. They also taught us how to do a legal u-turn which was very informative. They also showed us how to get onto the road with our bikes by carefully looking over our shoulders and being observant. At the end, we all got a certificate for passing the training. It has made us all a lot more aware as we make our journey to school on bikes. Our cul-de-sac gets busy so we need to be very careful when manoeuvring near the road. The training has given us lots of confidence to cycle to and from school safely. Grace and Tom Cool Crucial Crew. - Year Six have just been to Crucial Crew in Rotherham. Crucial Crew is a centre where children can learn about the law, safety and how to develop important life skills. We took part in various different scenarios including internet safety, the courtroom, alcohol awareness, theft, fire safety, criminal records and using bus services. It was a very useful experience and we learnt a lot about making the right choices and respecting the law. The instructors were actually part of service groups so we knew we were hearing the right advice. We now plan to use our new knowledge to write persuasive and explanation texts based on the trip. Eve and Ender Our New Executive Head teacher - Mrs Adair is our new executive head teacher. She is also the head teacher at St Albans and Flanderwell schools in Rotherham. Last Monday she came into our collective worship and talked about the symbol of the cross. The story was about a man who didn’t understand about love and was always looking for a better life. She used a piece of paper to tell her story and then at the end the paper turned into a cross, as if by magic. She also taught us a new song that we enjoyed singing and she can even play the piano. Hedgehog class asked Mrs Adair some questions: We asked if she had a pet but she said that her pet had died as it was so old. It was 15 years old (that’s not old for people but is for dogs). We asked how long that she had been a head teacher and she said 6 years. She used to be a classroom teacher in Foundation and Year 1 and 2. She is very friendly and kind and we are looking forward to more of her collective worships and learning some more songs. Welcome to our school, Mrs Adair. Maisy, Emily, Harry and Bradley. We hope you have enjoyed our report.

Hatfield Clean For the Queen 2016… Readers of the Arrow will already know how proud I am to call Hatfield my home. Although technically I was born in Hatfield Woodhouse, and apart from my jaunts around the UK, I have always considered Hatfield as my home town. But recently I have been somewhat of a troubled soul, like a Mexican at a Donald Trump rally. It is the problem with litter, fly-tipping and general untidiness that has caused me distress and anxiety, compounded by the realisation and inevitability that this is not going to change for the better. The white flag appears to have been raised and it appears we have surrendered to a future streets paved with ‘mould not gold’. It also got me thinking, if I was thinking this way, surely there are others. My question is, has the community stopped caring? However, not so long ago something special happened. No, I didn’t find a girlfriend, but this ray of light occurred as I was walking Mr Mole at the Dunsville quarry park. As we were about to enter so Mr Mole could stretch his legs, I noticed a man appearing to be picking up litter. He was very meticulous, picking it up and carefully placing it a clack bin liner. I approached him and asked, not for the first time, a really stupid question: “Excuse me, are you picking litter up?” I enquired casually. “Yes,” he retorted, a little bemused at my stupidity no doubt. “I am one of the friends of the Quarry Park and thought I would spend an hour or so tidying things up.” I held out my hand and explained that I thought people like him were fabulous and that I, for one, appreciated his efforts. Then I threw an empty mars bar wrapper on the floor and walked off. Of course I didn’t do that really. I stayed and we chatted for a while about his and the group's efforts, and how important it was to keep such a lovely place litter free. Then he asked me a question: “Are you the man who calls himself AKA The Difference?” I was a little taken aback, but had to confess, before he turned to offer his hand this time. “My Mrs is going to be well chuffed when she hears that I have met you, she loves what you do in the Arrow,” he confessed. As I strolled away, a warm feeling of appreciation within me, I realised that the reason why I felt so strongly about his efforts was that he was actually doing something about it. He hadn’t given up, no matter how many times he had to return to his task, and he never appeared to waver. With this in mind, I have reached the conclusion that I had to do something myself, no matter how small, just to counter my negative mind-set and also appease my conscience. So here is my idea: I would like to propose that Hatfield & Area takes part in the Clean for the Queen project. http://www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk/ Now this is where the problem lies, I don’t have anything else to offer other than some determination and hard work. However, I do have a date in mind, Sunday June 12th 2016 - would like to request any Arrow readers wishing to take part to reserve this date in their diaries. I do have some other thoughts though, one of which is to ensure that all those who take part will receive a cup of tea and a slice of cake to reward their efforts and maybe wish the Queen a Happy Birthday. I don’t have any bin liners, litter pickers, tea bags, cake, venue, maps, or anything. Just an idea!! But as we all know so well, everything begins with an idea. I estimate this cunning plan will need to involve groups, individuals, or in actual fact anyone to be honest choosing an area of the community and tidying it up of litter. I know that in March Mr and Mrs Watson did a superb job of tidying Coppice Lane and so we should try and follow their excellent example. If the weather is good it could be a fantastic way to start the day and only has to take as much time as you can spare. It may only be a small road or alley you focus on but if you tidy it up then you can join us for a cuppa and a slice of Battenberg. This idea may not work. It may fail. The day pencilled in may be the worst day I could have chosen. But one thing is for sure, I am going to give it a go. If not for the community, it will be for me, so that I can say that I have made an effort - other than writing an angry letter into the Free Press full of complaint but offering no solutions. I have created an e-mail address for anyone to contact me to either tell me I am bonkers, to offer to help, maybe to offer to bake a cake or buy some tea bags. hatfieldcleanup2016@gmail.com. Readers can also look on the internet simply type in “clean for the queen” for information. Further details and flesh to the bones of my idea will follow in the June edition. Please enjoy the spring sunshine, take time to listen to the birds, smell the flowers and to look up into the trees. Why? Well it’s not a well known fact but looking upwards can help make you feel happier!! And you may be surprised at what you find up there… PW – AKA The Difference
