PHASE Nepal is actively engaged in providing health care and education in remote hill villages. Many of the clinics and schools were destroyed or badly damaged in the earthquake and need to be rebuilt. News from Haxey Church of England Primary School It's been yet another busy month at school, with various events and activities the children have participated in and enjoyed. Visiting poet. First of all, we had a visit from Donavan Christopher - or 'Rappaman' - as he is known as in the publishing world. Workshops were held and children were coached in the art of modern poetry. There was then the opportunity for the children who had purchased one of his books to have their copy signed by the man himself. The children thoroughly enjoyed his visit and his invaluable input into their English work. World Book Day On Thursday 3rd March Haxey Church of England Primary School celebrated World Book Day with a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed day. Children and staff made a fabulous effort with their costumes and all the characters from the book were represented. The day began with a dance inspired by 'West End in Schools'. During the day, all children participated in a themed dance workshop led by the dance company, a tasting session int their very own 'Wonka's Kitchen' and a 'Golden Ticket' hunt. Other activities included designing chocolate bars, making a 'Wonkatnia' boat, representing the characters through art and much more. They children had a fantastic day and we would like to thank parents for their support. Sports Relief On Friday 18th March the children will be raising money for this worthy cause by walking the 'Sports Relief mile' around the local footpaths of the village. For just £1 they will be coming into school dressed as their favourite sports star. School will also be selling charity bands to further the cause. Look out for the next issue to find how much we've raised! Mother's Day pop up shop The PTFA have been busy bees again, offering each child the opportunity to buy something for their lovely mum, grandma or carer. Beautiful vintage silk flower arrangements, big branded beauty items, retro tea cups, saucers and biscuits were on offer for just £3.50 per item. The event was a great success and funds raised will be fed back into school for the benefit of all. We hope all in receipt of a gift liked them. Goodbye Mrs Mancey! Mrs Juliet Mancey will unfortunately leave our school at the end of term, to start a new role as assistant head in a North East Lincolnshire school. She has worked tirelessly over the last few years for the benefit of our school and children, and we would like to wish her our thanks and appreciation for all she has done for us over this period of time. Most of all we would like to wish her the very best of luck in her new post, we shall miss her greatly. Easter Service Children will attend our annual service at St Nicholas' church later on this month. It is always an exciting time for the children as they recount the story of Jesus, along with the anticipation of Spring and the school holidays. We wish everyone a relaxing Easter break, and look forward to sharing our school news with you all next month.

'Tractors into School' at St Martin's C of E Primary School, Owston Ferry: Farming plays an important part in all our lives; without it, our ability to feed the world would be threatened. The role of farming is increasingly topical in an era when food security, climate change and energy security is a global concern. With this is mind, the NFU in Lincolnshire and the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society have embarked on a joint campaign to encourage farmers to take a tractor into their local school. The aim is that primary-aged children will have the opportunity to see a tractor close-up and talk to a real, live, thinking, breathing, food-producing farmer. On Thursday 3rd March 2016, Mr Thornton, a local farmer in Owston Ferry visited St Martin's Primary School. Activities were planned throughout the whole day focusing on where our food comes from. The enthusiastic children, from Reception to Year 6, were able to get 'close-up' to a big red tractor. The tractor, which was kindly provided by Farmstar Ltd, housed the latest thinking in agricultural technology. St Martin's school would like to say a big thank-you to Patrick Thornton for giving up his own time to share his expertise and knowledge of farming with the children of St Martin's Primary.

SINGALONG WITH PAT Last year, after six years of working with dementia and elderly residents as an Activities Coordinator in a local Residential Home, Pat launched her new career as a professional singer, entertaining in residential homes singing songs from the 1940's and music hall days, bringing back musical memories to residents, particularly those suffering with dementia A former business development director, Pat was medically retired in 2004 from a career she loved, following an accident and in 2009 was well enough to work again, she was drawn to working with dementia people, a far cry from her previous career. Pat saw an advert for an activities coordinator in a local residential home and despite no experience or qualifications, her personality and determination to succeed at whatever she turned her hand to, gained her the position. She threw herself into the role, working with residents on a one to one basis and also daily group sessions with various activities. To understand more the various types of dementia, Pat studied and completed NVQ's in Dementia Awareness, Mental Health and Dignity and Safeguarding, giving her a greater depth of knowledge for working with residents. It soon became evident that the residents gained more stimulation and enjoyment from music than any other activity, Pat spent more and more time singing with them, bringing back musical memories from the 1940's and 1950's with everyone joining in singing and some residents enjoying a dance or two. Pat had learnt early on in her time with the residents that dementia does not strip the memory bank where music is stored, enabling those suffering with it to have a feeling of wellbeing and enjoyment through music. Pat has always been able to sing and throughout her life was often the life and soul of any party striking up a song, particularly songs from the 'good old days' which her Mother had taught her as a child Last year Pat was drawn to reaching out to people in other residential homes and day care centres, whose lives have sadly been affected by dementia and infirmity. She found it hard saying goodbye to the residents she had worked with every day for the last six years but she hung up her uniform and now wears costumes which reflect those worn in the 1940's. It has been a busy six months since Pat launched her new 'career' and wherever she goes she is welcomed back again. Her areas include Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Worksop, Retford and Lincoln, she has even travelled to Bristol twice to sing at a retirement care village at the request of a relative. She has also had the honour of singing at three 100th birthday parties in the last three months. Pat looks forward to continuing her 'singalongs' for some time to come, stimulating minds and enjoyment of musical memories, it is evident how much job satisfaction she gains from what she is doing.

If you want to know more, Pat can be contacted on 07771 795397 for details/bookings.

Funding approved for a new refurbished play park at Church Meadow in Misterton Children in Misterton and the surrounding villages are set to get a new play park facility thanks to a £33,847.00 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to buy and install a complete range of play equipment at Church Meadow play park, High Street, Misterton. Barry Cooper, Chairman of the Parish Council, believes the facility will make a huge difference to the lives of the people living in the area. He says: “This project will provide a real boost to the people of Misterton. It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our play park taking shape in the next 12 months”. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s grant manager for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Church Meadow Play park Regeneration project and pleased that our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for children in Misterton. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.” Angela Harrison, Clerk to the Council, hopes that the play park will be ready to use by the end of June 2016: “The play park has needed significant investment for some time and it is fantastic news that not only can the existing play equipment be replaced by up-to-date, modern alternatives, but new equipment can also be installed that will cater for the needs of a much larger range of children. Thanks to WREN’s assistance we can now have a play park the whole village can be proud of for many years to come.” For more information about WREN funding contact Cheryl Raynor on 01623 755319, at cheryl.raynor@wren.org.uk or visit http://www.wren.org.uk/
