Welcome to the April issue of the Arrow!
April does bring with it the promise of Spring. Easter is late this year so lets hope for a great 2 weeks off with the kids. At half term. Don’t forget to change your clocks on the 26th March. The move to British Summer Time (BST) means that the days are getting longer - but switching clocks also means a whole hour less in bed. The good news is that many of our internet-connected clocks (like smartphones, tablets and TVs) will do it automatically. But you still need to be prepared to avoid getting caught out. I would love to be including more local community content within this magazine. It costs nothing for local groups and societies. If you know of an organisation please ask them to get in touch. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 12th April for distribution by the 1st May . If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

Are you interested in getting more involved in your local community?
Haxey Memorial Hall is at the centre of the village, is used by many groups and is run by volunteers. We usually meet on the first Thursday every other month for about an hour and a half and our meetings are fairly informal! We would really welcome some new faces to our team so if you have a little time to spare and are interested in joining us or, in the first instance, finding out what we do then please come along to our
A.G.M. at 7 o’clock in the Hood Room at the Hall on Thursday 4th May. We look forward to seeing you there!
APPEAL, APPEAL, APPEAL The Epworth Thurlow Pre-School was broken into on Thursday 2nd February between 7.30 and 9.30pm and set fire to. Whilst the fire was contained to the kitchen the whole building has suffered extensive smoke damage and all our equipment and the children's toys and learning materials need replacing. We have relocated to other community spaces for the present whilst the building is repaired. The Pre-school is run as a charity and by a committee of volunteers and we are devastated at the damage. We are putting out an appeal for help in form of donations, fundraising and will shortly be setting up a Just Giving page. If anyone would like to help please contact Rachel 07815 937 411

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall
Sep.10th. No papers in today. Afternoon news, that Jerry has taken charge of Rome. (Not so good) Evening, excitement again, Rumours that Americans and English troops are in Rome. Out Interpreter goes to listen to English news, which says, Italian and French are fighting against Jerry in France. Trouble in Rumania. He has gone out again to listen, so hoping that there’s more news of the Rome affair. (According to official documents and a statement by Clifford Spencer the following paragraph states; Source left FARA NEL SABINA on foot and went to Mount Flavia) Sep. 11th. Well what a do, at the time of writing, I am with a lot more (men) out among the hills, we have just had a brew and smoke. We have left the camp and are trying to get in contact with our forces. It is very hot and carrying our kit makes it worse. This morning all the Itie guards left the camp only officers and a few stayed. What our adventures are to be remains to be seen. We left camp 5.30pm and went through the hills, about 2000 strong. We then came to a road, which we had to go along to get to more hills. We passed three villages, got water, and into our rest place in the hills at 11pm. Not all of us though, many were left behind, and have since heard that Jerry passed through the last village we came through and picked about 30 of them up. I’ve got new boots on, and have sore heels already. Sunday, arise 4am. Sep. 12th. I’ve seen on pictures what we have been doing, never thought I’d have to do it. Up and down and turning over rocks, one slip many a time meant death. Carrying our food and kit was the worst thing about it. The sun got up and made it worse. After what seemed like hours we came to a stopping place where we raided peaches and grapes from a field near a village. We were told then to get into groups and split up, so now I am with a party of fourteen, all chaps I know. Out of the 107 still Les, Bill and Len. We have settled down at a spot three miles from a village. We have to have water; the civvies are after us for clothing. They are bringing water, but they always want something for it. We are taking it in turns to go to fetch it ourselves for nothing, although the kiddies want cigs, or something you like to give. I haven’t been yet, my heel is bad. Len is also about done; in fact we all want a good rest before going on. We can hear shelling in the distance, and a couple of shells came over the village. Monday had a good night’s sleep; it’s a lovely morning, civvies bringing water and Sep. 13th. bread, wanting clothing for it. Jerry is in the village we found out on our way here, about 3 miles. Can hear bangs Rome way, we are now about 25 miles from Rome. It’s been a lovely day. We have had as many grapes as we liked; we are near a vineyard. We just had a bunch of grapes, about 90 on it. Good night’s rest. My heel is not so Sep. 14th. good. Have been checking up what food we have, can last for three to four weeks except for bread. There’s no game about, never even seen a bird. Hope you won’t worry about me, things will turn up dear that’s the only thing that worries me, and things will turn out right one day please God. Later more grapes peaches and figs, also blackberries. A civvy comes round and brings a little girl with him; she was a sweet little thing, about Julie’s size when I last saw her. He could speak a little English, in fact there is one or two who can, and they had been to America 20 years back.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School Trentside Federation In homage to World Book Day children (and staff!) were invited to wear their best outfits for a Where's Wally themed day. The children were in high spirits as they turned up in a plethora of red and white stripes for the day. Each child also received a World Book Day token which they can put towards a book, or exchange for a World Book Day book. We hope the children enjoy their new reads. A group of swimmers from school, recently took part in a swimming gala at Ridings Pool in Scunthorpe. There were several races throughout the afternoon, culminating in a relay. The children did our school proud coming a respectable 3rd out of 7 schools, well done to those involved! We would like to extend our grateful thanks to Mr Hather who has made a mud kitchen for the newly refurbished FS2 outdoor space. The children cannot wait for fairer weather so they can cook up some fantastic mud creations! Our governors have held their fist meeting since Federating with St Martin's at Owston Ferry, and West Butterwick Church of England Primary school. We are thrilled to announce that Mrs Susan Coggan is our new chair of governors and Mrs Carol Lindley has been appointed vice chair. There have also been a number of co-opted Governors recently appointed, some you will have heard of and also some new faces. From Haxey we have Mrs Liz shah who is staff governor, and Mrs Sally Roberts who was elected parent governor. Needless to say, we have a team of dedicated people who seek only the best for our schools, and who are very much looking forward to working together. May we offer a reminder to those who travel to school by car to park considerately along The Nooking? Please do not obstruct driveways of our neighbour's, or park on the footpaths. It is forbidden to park on the yellow 'zig-zags' directly outside the school entrance. Now that Spring is in the air, perhaps those living in the village might consider adopting a healthier lifestyle and walk to school instead of driving. There have also been recent changes to legislation covering children's car seat/ restraints. Please make sure you are using the correct seat for your child's height/weight and not age. The PTFA have been hard at work again and have held a couple of events already this last month - a disco which was very much enjoyed by the children, and a new event to their repertoire, in the guise of a movie night. Children donned their best onesies and settled for a night in front of the big screen, complete with snacks and drinks. Thanks to those who took the time to organise it, and more importantly to those who supported it. The holidays are fast approaching, and parents will be scratching their heads as to how to entertain their children without it costing the earth. Look no further, as school are now selling the popular Purple Voucher books. These are full of vouchers for days out, entertainment, restaurants and activities in the local area. Priced at £22 per book, this can easily be recouped after using just one voucher. Please see the school office if you would like to purchase one. They also raise money for school at the same time as saving you some!

SWING HALF A TON OF METAL ON A ROPE!
It’s true; you can learn to swing seriously heavy metal around on the end of a rope and have great fun doing it. It doesn’t have to be half a ton, you can manage with just 180 Kg or so, and you don’t need to be strong. You will get gentle upper body exercise which surprisingly is not strenuous, you will be both mentally and physically stimulated, and you can make a great deal of noise while doing it, which doesn’t just add to the fun, it is actually the whole point of the exercise. What is this all about? We’re talking church bells and your local bell-ringers are keen to recruit a few new learners. Ringing is a fascinating hobby that is practised across the world. Both men and women enjoy it and anyone from about 12 years old and upwards can learn. Ringers become part of a network which lets them enter almost any bell tower in the country and find a warm welcome so that wherever they are there is a readymade circle of friends. But first you have to learn to ring. Initial lessons in how to handle the bell rope and make the bell ring require 1:1 tuition for weekly sessions over a few months. After that you start to ring with others as part of a team and learning this will take longer. It isn’t quick but it is truly worthwhile and people who stay the course often find they have developed a lifelong interest. Bells usually hang in church towers and not everyone wants to go to church, so is that a problem? No; many ringers do not attend church but ringing before services is the team’s aim and its ultimate purpose; so someone starting now would hopefully be prepared to do that too. There’s far too much to put in this short space so if you are even just a bit curious , why not come along to a taster session. You will be invited to one of our practices at Belton or Epworth and will be able to have a go (with someone helping) on either a simulator or a real bell; but mostly you will watch and listen and there will be people to explain things so you can go away to think about it. Why not contact us to learn more? See the details below; and by the way, there is no charge at all for lessons. Young Voices 2017 at Sheffield Arena article by Megan Stringer On the 11th January the choir at Haxey C of E Primary school went to Sheffield Arena to take part in Young Voices. This is where lots of different school choirs gather together to perform songs, dance and have fun. This year there were over 5000 school children singing together. When we arrived at the arena we were a little bit nervous but then we spent the afternoon rehearsing our songs and dance moves with the help of the band, conductor and dancers so we felt much more confident. After tea all the parents arrived to watch us perform. I think they were nearly as excited as we were! We sang about 10 songs in total including 'Birdhouse in your Soul', 'Stronger Together', a pop medley and 'You're the Voice' which we performed using our voices and sign language. We also performed a South African song called 'Maliswe'. There were also performances by Natalie Williams, The Beatbox Collective, Tabby Callaghan and Urban Strides some of which the choir joined in too. I know that everyone at Haxey (including the teachers that came with us) enjoyed it as much as I did, we were all dancing along and singing our hearts out even all the parents joined in. Young Voices is such an amazing experience, I really really hope we are invited next year to have another wonderful time.

LOCAL MAN TO RIDE ACROSS RAJASTHAN After years of teaching other people to ride, riding school owner Andrew Stennett is to ride across Rajasthan to help raise funds for The British Horse Society Welfare Support Team. Andrew established Grove House Stables LLP in 1991 to share his passion for horses, with horse welfare at the very heart of his business. But not all horses in the UK are so fortunate. Every year, the number of horses requiring assistance from the Welfare Team increases, placing extra strain on already tight resources. As well as essential welfare work the team also seek to change the behaviour, through education, of people who do not look after their horses properly. From 23 September to 4 October, Andrew will take part in the Riding with Kings Challenge Ride across the triangle of Delhi, Bikaner and Jaipur. His horse for the journey will be a Marwari horse, a breed descending from the war horses of the ruling families of feudal India. A tough, brave breed, these horses were known as ‘superior to all men’. Andrew is pictured wearing an Indian prince's outfit with dressage horse Gally. Anyone wanting to support his fundraising should go to his Just Giving page.

Epworth Music Day Imagine it’s 9.59am on Saturday 24 June. In one minute’s time the streets of Epworth will again resound with music and song. Yes, it’s Epworth Music Day again – 7 hours of music and song. A grand day out! And all free of charge! This year there will be again over 50 different acts performing throughout the day and evening to make the town come live once again to a day of music, song and dance. During the day starting at 10am and running through until 5pm there will be simultaneous performances programmed at 13 different venues in the town: in the car park of the White Bear, in the gardens of the Wesley Methodist Memorial Church, outside China Palace, in the car park of the Queens Head, in the Market Place, in Fountain Court, outside the sheltered accommodation in Albion Street, in the car park of the Mowbray Arms and in the gardens of the Old Rectory and inside the Hub. There will also be an impromptu stage area outside the dentist in Church Street for anyone to sign up and perform, as well as sessions of folk music and song in The Tap and the Red Lion. If it is wet the show will still go on, but all of the performances will move to adjacent indoor venues in the town centre or on site. Last year we attracted choirs, brass ensemble, jazz group, wind band, bellringers, folk bands, rock bands, ukulele band, Morris dancers, mediaeval musicians and dancers, folk singers and musicians and guitarists. Many of these groups have asked to play this year, together with others who have heard how much fun the day is. They came from North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, Hull, Grantham and Lincoln. Surely something for every musical taste? In the evening there will be a free concert in St Andrews Church, starting at 7pm when 7 of the groups who have played during the day will reappear. At the same time local rock bands will be playing in the Queens Head starting at 8.30pm. We are once again very grateful for the financial support of Epworth Town Council and Harold Woolgar Insurances, together with support from many traders and businesses in town. After the 2016 event, Peter Barnard, director of Epworth Music Day, said “What a great day! It was wonderful to see so many people about in Epworth enjoying the music and the spectacle of over 40 different musical acts. People came from near and far to witness it and the traders were very busy. Events such as these take some organising and I really appreciate the time and energy given by all the volunteer stewards - who are really the unsung heroes of the day - and my fellow directors – Kate Billmore, Nicky Thomas, John Lambert and Peter Davies whose unstinting work in planning for all eventualities and then making it all work so well on the day makes the day such a success. A great team effort! We just now need lots of people to come and enjoy this day of free music in our lovely town. So, it would be great if you could join us in celebrating music making in the community. Join in by listening and watching or busking and helping at impromptu sessions. It will be a grand day out!” Epworth Music Day 2017 – Saturday 24th June from 10-5pm and then again from 7pm in the evening. Put it in your diary now! For more details go to website or our Facebook page or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
