VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Due to a change in circumstances I will be unable to act as the Poppy Appeal Organiser (PAO) again this year. This means that Haxey and Westwoodside area is looking for a replacement organiser and ideally a deputy to assist them. Last year we raised well of £3000 for the appeal so it is vitally important that this good work continues. If you are interested in volunteering as either the organiser or the deputy please contact Nick Fairfax (Community Fundraiser- Lincolnshire) on 07551138422 or email NFairfax@britishlegion.org.uk.

Haxey Primary School celebrated not just World Book Day ‐ instead, we had a whole week of fantas c book related ac vi es that included a "Bring your favourite book to school day", a family stay and read session, and dressing up as our favourite characters ‐ we had lots of Gangsta Grannies, Li le Red Riding Hoods, dinosaurs, Billionaire Boys and several Harry Po ers and Hermiones! The week ended with each class taking part in a fantas c dance workshop organised by The WestEnd in Schools Company ‐ F2 to Year 4 did a dance based on Where the Wild Things Are, with Years 5 and 6 using "The Iron Man" as their s mulus. The dances created were absolutely amazing, and all of the children had a fantas c me in the sessions. Thank you to our wonderful PTFA for funding the event ‐ it was definitely a big hit with the whole school! On Tuesday 5th March, Year 1 par cipated in a 'Space Academy Workshop.' Throughout the day, the children learnt about our solar system. They then travelled into space in a special rocket, looking for 'Max' the lost alien. During their journey, the children visited several planets, going through different galaxies. On returning to Earth, rockets were made and fired to enhance learning about forces. At the end of the sessions, children were awarded cer ficates from Captain Darling to take home. Children in Year 1 thought their me in space was an amazing adventure! Misterton Community News ARTISTS SHOWCASE THEIR WORK IN FIRST EXHIBITION
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Budding artists, who are members of Misterton’s Brushstrokes art group, are holding the first exhibition of their own work on Saturday 13 April in the Church Room from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The artists, who come from Misterton and West Stockwith and nearby villages, meet weekly. Once a month, there is a professional tutor and, at intervals during the year, other artists are invited to come for specialist masterclasses.
Misterton Parish Council is again running its Citizen of the Year Awards in two categories: up to 18 years of age and over-18. The awards will be presented at the Annual Parish Meeting in May. Residents who want to nominate someone in recognition of their contribution to the community during 2018 should forward details to the Clerk to the Council, at The Misterton Centre & Library by Friday 29 March. Nominations can additionally be e-mailed to theclerk@mistertonnotts-pc.gov.uk
PARISH CHURCH’S EASTER BINGO The Parish Church’s traditional Easter Bingo is on Friday 5 April in the Church Room. Eyes down is at 7.00pm. There’s a range of typically Easter prizes and proceeds go towards the upkeep of the Church.
BOWLS CLUB’S AGM With a collection of work in a range of media, Brushstrokes decided to hold its own exhibition. To help with the costs, District Cllr Hazel Brand (pictured right) with Brushstrokes members, donated £100 from her community grants fund. Light refreshments will be on sale at the exhibition, and there’s a raffle and ‘silent auction’ of original works and prints by some of Brushstrokes’ visiting artists.
Misterton Bowls Club held its AGM last month to prepare for the coming season. The Club will be competing in three leagues: Gainsborough League (Monday and Wednesday evenings), Pensioners League (Tuesday afternoons), and Isle of Axholme League (Thursday and Friday evenings).
New members are always welcome. Come and try the friendly competitive, healthy outdoor sport and keep fit. For more details, ring Malcolm on 890340. Croft House Kennels, West Stockwith, DN10 4BE This lovely boy is Forrest, a crossbreed who is around 4-5 years old, and is looking for a new home. Forrest is a very friendly, affectionate dog who loves a tummy rub, and is quite bouncy and playful. He is good with other dogs, but not cats, and would be fine with older kids. He would make a great pet for an older active person or a family who enjoy going for walks and playing ball games. Forrest is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Discover Doncaster’s heritage at this year’s Doncaster Heritage Festival, Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. HAXEY DRAMA BACK ON STAGE Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society is staging another great comedy in April.. One young woman meets one old lady. Their lives were poles apart but fate drew them together. The only problem being they were more alike than anyone imagined. Kylie starts community service at the respite home & encounters Nora, an embittered woman, who has spent her life teaching & avoiding relationships. The play follows the funny & poignant story of the two women, as mutual dislike & mistrust turn into an unusual & heart-warming friendship. The characters talk openly to Gladys, who has had a stroke & cannot speak. But Gladys can hear & learns the secrets of patients & staff alike. There’s Connie, the domestic, acutely addicted to gossip, & the two nurses who are in denial about their feelings for one another. Finally, when Gladys regains her speech the confidences are all revealed. This play will leave you laughing and crying, probably at the same time, so get your tickets early to be sure of a seat for this funny & moving play. Performances are in Haxey Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th April. Tickets are £5 from Green Hill

Birthday Changes at Epworth Old Rectory This year, 2019, is the 350th anniversary of the birth of Susanna Wesley, the Mother of Methodism. We at the Old Rectory in Epworth are proud to say we have made a change to one of our rooms to reflect the importance of this event. Without Susanna, Methodism may never have existed. There are those who would agree with this, and of course those who would disagree, and long may the debate continue. As part of this celebration of her life we have arranged a series of events throughout the year, which will be publicised at the appropriate time naturally, but will also be found on our Facebook page, and on the new website once it is up and running. The first was a prayer vigil held on her actual birthday, January 20th. The second event involved one of the biggest changes to the house in several years, and has taken us quite some time to complete. One of the rooms, has been changed into a room dedicated to Susanna, with the decor changed into a bright inviting space in which to hang the major acquisition for us of a portrait of Susanna. Although the paint is a modern one, the colour is a period shade and lifts the room into another dimension altogether. All the work on the room has been done by volunteers, starting with filling all the cracks in the plaster, the holes in the walls, and repairing one or two loose floorboards. Everything was washed down before the paint was applied, hours spent polishing a new light fitting before it could be put into place, and then the main task hanging the portrait of Susanna over the fireplace where she reigns in solitary splendour. Time was spent selecting items from the collection that would give light onto her life, and getting them into the best places. Lots of hard work by a small band, but well worth every minute of the time that was generously given. The Rectory is now open for the season, and all visitors will be welcomed, but please, if you are travelling from a good distance away, please do check our opening days and times before you travel. We would hate to have anyone disappointed by arriving when we are closed. Use the Facebook page for information, or call the Rectory, Monday to Friday on 01427 872268. Cath Fordham
