Welcome to the April issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. As Spring arrives and the days get longer there are plenty of reasons to be happy! After being couped up indoors for months we are able to get outside more. The first phase of England’s roadmap out of lockdown got underway on 8th March, as pupils returned to the classroom and care homes began allowing visitors once more. Hopefully in April non-essential retail, hairdressers and barbers will reopen, as will gyms, zoos, theme parks, community centres and self contained holiday accommodation. I don’t know about you but I'm in desperate need of an appointment at my hairdressers. I have resisted temptation into the DIY dye job and the at-home hair transformation. Its lovely to see more information coming through from clubs and societies, a sign we may be seeing our lives getting back to some sort of normality. Keep these articles coming in! The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 14th April for delivery by Sunday 2nd May. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

DONCASTER WHEATSHEAF SINGERS REUNION UPDATE It is with sadness and regret that the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers have to announce that the plans to hold their delayed 70th Anniversary Reunion on 12th June 2021 have once again had to be cancelled due to the latest Covid-19 Government restrictions. As this reunion of past and present members and associates was originally due to take place during the anniversary year in 2020 it was felt that a further postponement, rather than cancellation, was no longer an option. The choir are, however, hoping that some concerts, including the Charity Christmas Concert at the Minster, may begin in the Autumn/Winter of this year if all restrictions are lifted as planned. The choir are looking forward to face to face rehearsals commencing in May or June when guidance allows under the baton of their new Musical Director Ray Gallagher. If anyone is interested in joining the DWS when rehearsals begin please feel free to contact their Chairperson Dorothy Miller on 07703358889 or email sec@wheatsheafsingers.co.uk for further information.

Churches reopening for Worship

The Churches of St. Martin’s, Owston Ferry and St. Nicholas’, Haxey, will be reopening for worship on Palm Sunday, 28th March. Services will be taking place as normal on Easter Sunday, 4th March and every Sunday thereafter. It has been a sad time over the past few months having to keep our churches closed because of COVID-19, but we are hopeful of gradually getting back to a normal pattern of worship which will enable the church to continue serving the local communities. There are still restrictions on the numbers who are able to attend weddings, baptisms and funerals, but these will hopefully be lifted in due course in accordance with government guidelines. Any enquiries for the churches of Haxey and Owston Ferry should be directed to the Vicar, Rev. Mark Zammit, as detailed below: Phone - 01427 753004 or 07733077957 Email: zammitparish@yahoo.co.uk

The Isle Choral Singers

In line with other organisations The Isle Choral Singers have not been able to have rehearsals since Covid lockdown in March 2020 but as a registered charity the Trustees are required to maintain regular contact with members and file the annual Charity Commissioners return. So on 1st March 2021 a Zoom Annual General Meeting was held and, although participants were few, there were more than adequate for a quorum. The meeting was opened by Chairman, Tony Flinn, who welcomed everyone and apologies were duly noted by Minute Secretary, Rev. Angy Long. In his report treasurer, Dr. John Lambert, advised that the group were still managing to keep “our heads above the water” in spite of the restrictions over the past year but we will definitely need to hold some fund raising events once we can resume meeting again. Mention was made of the grant aid from Epworth Town Council for £250 towards music scores, which is ring fenced for the time being. Musical Director, Robert Fields, expressed his hope that we would be able to have a Christmas concert this year with some Christmas music and carols. The Vivaldi’s “Gloria” would be performed at Easter 2022, but no firm plans can be made meantime. The current committee and trustees were all willing to serve for the coming year and so with unanimous agreement were duly elected. Members are looking forward to when we will able to meet and all agreed that, once it is permitted for choirs to sing inside, an invitation will be circulated to members [along anyone else interested in joining us] to hold rehearsals over the summer period when we normally have a break. The annual members’ Summer Meal was felt to be something to look forward to. Obviously it is not possible to make any firm commitments on future concerts etc. at this time so please……………..WATCH THIS SPACE!!

HAXEY PARISH NEWS will publish the April edition for April 4th. We are asking our helpers to deliver but not collect the £2 subscription for the year at this stage. We still need to keep contacts to the minimal. A HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE! Elaine Dunford

RSPCA – Fostering love Theresa was found living in awful conditions with old injuries left to heal without treatment. It was clear that she would need substantial help and fast. Theresa was unable to walk on her front leg due to an old injury that had caused her bones to fuse together incorrectly. Not only was this painful for Theresa but it was also having a detrimental effect on her ability to walk. Theresa was taken to RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre timid and in pain. It was determined by Peak Vets that Theresa would have a better chance at a happy life if the fused leg was amputated. Theresa recovered from the operation with RSPCA foster carers and her sweet and affectionate nature shone through. In fact they soon realised she was part of the family – permanently. Although she has a way to go, Theresa is making leaps and bounds in her mobility and is now able to enjoy her walks again; all with her new forever family. The local RSPCA Centre is looking forward to re-opening charity shops and offering centre services such as dog training as soon as allowed under the Government road map. The team continue to rehabilitate and rehome local animals in need as they have done throughout the pandemic. There are many ways to help the RSPCA mission including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsoring through the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. There is a pet supplies store at the Animal Centre and online. There is also a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

WALKER’S FIRST CHARITY DONATION Generous family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours sponsored Misterton’s Hazel Brand to the tune of £1000 when she walked from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay. The sponsorship will be divided between Misterton surgery’s patient equipment fund and dementia care. The first donation was made to the surgery in January. Pictured is Hazel (right) with Practice Manager, Alison Johnson. Hazel started the 192-mile walk from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay two years ago but didn’t finish it until 2020. She explains: “My walking partner – my sister, Rosemary – broke a leg on day two of the walk, in dreadful conditions in Cumbria. We didn’t know it was broken at the time, so we managed to keep going until about the halfway point in Reeth, then gave up. Then I broke a leg while in the USA later the same year - so, in 2019, we were both rehabilitating and did some parts of the walk, which we finished last year. Many thanks to everyone, who sponsored me - your support was a real inspiration when the going got tough!”

RIDING STABLES CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY Misterton’s Grove House Stables celebrated its 30th anniversary in February. The equestrian centre was founded by Andrew Stennett in 1991. His grandparents, Norman and Eileen, bought Grove House Farm on Grovewood Road, built in 1811. His parents, Pip and Judy, joined the family business in 1972 when Andrew was just two years old. With his pony, Whisky, Andrew (pictured) established PAG Equestrian Services in October 1991. It had a sole trader status, and the aim was to provide quality training in horse care and riding to all members of the community. This aim extended to the pricing – keeping the costs down and thus enabling many people to have their very first taste of equestrianism. Grove House Stables grew and began to provide comprehensive livery services to clients owning their own horses and to provide training courses towards professional equestrian examinations as well as recreational riding lessons. The business became Grove House Stables and began delivering NVQ training in horse care, riding, and management. The first 15 students, training on NVQ levels 1 and 2, resulted in a 100% pass rate. Level 3 was soon offered, as well taking on more adult education students. A floodlit riding arena was essential and after a lot of hard work and long hours, Andrew’s dream came true. He obtained financial support from the Princes Youth Business Trust and the Bassetlaw Enterprise Board. In 1998, the facilities were further enhanced, and the centre became officially recognised by the British Horse Society as a recommended training centre. During 2011, a judges’ box and purposebuilt seating for spectators were added. Over subsequent years, the centre continued to evolve and get involved with national and community events. In 2016, Andrew became one of the first elite recreational coaches in the country. Find out more on Facebook and at https:// grovehousestables.co.uk.

Haxey Parish Council Newsletter – March 2021 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: The Foreman Carter Centre, Westwoodside Playing Field, Westwoodside, DN9 2DX Telephone: 01427 752228 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Haxey Parish Council Precept 2021/22 Haxey Parish Council have set the precept at £40,000 the same as 2020/21. This will result in a band D charge to residents of £23.13. Anti-social Behaviour To ensure that all anti-social behaviour is logged and the relevant actions are taken please report all incidents to the police on 101. Westwoodside Pond Please do not feed the ducks at Westwoodside Pond. The Parish Council are aware that this may have been a regular family tradition to walk down to the pond and feed the ducks but this MUST stop PLEASE. There have always and always will be rodents around water but recently there has been an increase in rats which are causing great concern to the Parish Council and local residents. The Parish Council has in place pest control but to reduce the problem we are asking residents to be considerate and not feed the ducks. The Parish Council have asked that the litter bin is emptied weekly and it would assist if all visitors to the pond take home their rubbish to assist. Westwoodside & Haxey playing fields Both Playing Field Associations are having to deal with large amounts of litter being left on the playing field by irresponsible users. This includes the smashing of bottles which is extremely dangerous as these area also encompass children's/toddlers play areas. The areas are having to have additional litter pick volunteers to remove the debris. Please ensure you take home your litter and if you see anyone littering please report to the relevant associations.

HAXEY MEMORIAL HALL INSTALS SOLAR PANELS

We are all looking forward to some “light at the end of the tunnel” during the current lockdown and hoping that, with spring just around the corner, we shall all soon be able to enjoy some sunshine. At Haxey Memorial Hall we are even more optimistic about the sunny days to come, as we have recently installed solar panels on the building so that we can now generate much of our own electricity and thus cut our electricity bills and make the hall “greener”. Although the hall has been closed, like most community buildings, for much of the past year, our proactive committee seized the opportunity to research ways to enhance the building. We had discussed the possibility of solar power at one of our regular meetings and we discovered that North Lincs. Council had a Community Grant Fund and were inviting applications for “Enhancing the Environment Grants” for which we thought we may be eligible. We were fortunate to be granted £5,000 towards the cost of installing solar panels and thanks to the very efficient company IVOLTZ, the work was completed swiftly and efficiently. Now not only are we able to generate electricity, but can also, thanks to modern technology, monitor our usage and be alerted to spikes of usage if, for example a heater has been inadvertently left on. We grateful to“The North Lincolnshire Council for the grantto and to IVOLTZ for their 20 are extremely Please mention Arrow” when responding advertisements excellent work.

Epworth Bowls Club

Battle Green Epworth Spring is nearly upon us and Epworth Bowls Club is preparing for the new bowling season. We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's and our season starts from 1st May to 30th August. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions, visiting other clubs for friendly days out, have our own Gala Day and enjoy some very good Fun Days with our members. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 years). Our roll-ups, which are run twice a week, have been well supported and we hope to do the same again this year in compliance with any COVID 19 rules and regulations which have been set out by Bowls England. This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability and all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome with bowls and instructions initially provided. Contact Liz or Sue who will be pleased to give you any further information you require.

Crowle Peatland Railway - It's full steam ahead! Because of the COVID lockdown, Crowle Peatland Railway has, like many other organisations, had to stop much of the work that we were doing. Now with the government announcement of its roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions, we are now able to start to put in place our plans for reopening the Crowle Peatland Railway site and to plan the official opening. We will also be able to start work on the railway extension for which planning permission was granted last year. After an official opening, we will be holding public open days on Saturday 1st May and Sunday 2nd May with appropriate Covid secure precautions in place. This will be an opportunity not only to see how we are getting on but to visit our cafe which we hope will be open on a regular basis, not only for those visiting the railway but also visitors to the moors and those who need to get out of the house! The recently installed decking provides a great area to sit outside sipping coffee and taking in your surroundings. We are always looking for new members so it will also be an opportunity for you to see how you can volunteer! Note that if the dates around the government roadmap change then our dates will inevitably have to change too.

Rescue Day 2021 – CANCELLED It is with regret that Rescue Day 2021, which was due to be held on Saturday 10th July at 7 Lakes Country Park, Crowle has been cancelled, despite the government’s four-step roadmap to ease restrictions across England and provide a route back to a more normal way of life. Stage four, which allows the return of larger events, is due to take place no earlier than the 21st June 2021. Several of our organisers are employed by our emergency and health services and along with our stakeholders, who support the planning and delivery of Rescue Day, remain under extreme pressure at this time, therefore regrettably a joint decision has been taken to cancel this year’s event. Chris Long, Chair of the Rescue Day Society, said “The team and I are hugely disappointed that we will not be able to bring Rescue Day to you again this year. Cancelling the event is one of the hardest decisions to make, however it has been a tough year for all of those involved with the event. We wish to thank our hosts 7 Lakes Country Park and all our organisers, officials, volunteers, exhibitors and their families for their continued support during these unprecedented times.” Rescue Day remains committed to promoting the great work of our emergency and voluntary services, raising money for charities and good causes, it has funded many lifesaving public defibrillators and equipment which have been placed in local communities. We know our visitors and exhibitors will be sad to hear that this year’s event has been cancelled once again, however we are pleased to let you know that Rescue Day will hopefully return next year on Saturday 9th July 2022 and we look forward to welcoming you all back very soon. Please keep an eye on our website rescueday999.com and social media accounts facebook.com/rescuedayuk/ and twitter.com/Rescue_Day for more information.

We have moved on a further month and we can now see light at the end of the tunnel with regards to the restrictions we have been under, on and off for a year now! WOW, who would have thought we would have had a 2nd Mothers’ Day under lock down? It is great news that the Prime Minister (and our is giving us hope for travel this Summer ! Lots of people are booking UK breaks away for their family but to others they still want to get away further afield to the Mediterranean sun and beyond. I would personally await booking this summer until we know where and when we can travel too and to some this may mean a vaccine or a COVID19 test pre travelling. We will not know the finer details until May and travel operators and agents are likely to be inundated with bookings at that point. I am not sure when we will see restrictions lifted for travel to the USA, New Zealand or Australia, this may still be some time until we can safely travel there. In the mean time, there is a huge shift in holiday types, many people opting for a more expensive holiday further afield, given their 2020 and 2021 spending for holidays has merged into a larger amount. Clients are also booking more adventure and touring style holidays, getting the best of both worlds with being immersed in the culture of Thailand, Cambodia, Borneo and South Africa being top sellers and enjoying a beach/relax break within this. Remember to book with an agent who is a member of ABTA and packages that are ATOL bonded. Do your research with FDCO in advance on the destination you have in mind and above all make sure you have adequate insurance in place. Please do head to my page on Facebook www.facebook.com/luanthornhillathaystravel and if you would like any ideas. I have plenty of holidays on my page or get in touch with me and I can put something together for you.
