We’ve launched Humber Talking as our way of connecting with the people we serve. We are inviting them to have a conversation with us about what matters to them, what they are worried about, how they want us to tackle the issues that concern them and how they want to be involved with that. Teams of neighbourhood police officers and PCSO’s will be knocking on doors and asking residents to answer a few short questions. They will record the answers through the My Community Alerts system, which will analyse the results so that the information can be quickly fed back into the local team and help to shape their priorities. If the issues being raised are within the remit of partner agencies, such as local authorities, health services etc then we will pass on the information to those organisations. If you are keen to get involved now you can access the survey by following this link: www.mycommunityalert.co.uk/humbertalking By following the link you can also sign up to My Community Alert – a free messaging service where you receive alerts from Humberside Police about local issues. Complete our survey today and be part of the conversation.

Handlebards Are Here for a Third Run The boys are back in town, or will be in August, for their second appearance at Epworth Old Rectory. Last year it was the turn of the young ladies to perform for our delight, and the performance was just that, delightful. Full of fun and laughter despite being essentially a tragedy. This year's show is "Much Ado about Nothing" which should please the ear, and definitely tickle the funny bone. By the time you are reading this we will have had Chapterhouse Theatre Company from Lincoln performing Pride and Prejudice in the gardens with the audience having enjoyed both their picnic and the performance. There will also have been a visit by the delegates of the Methodist Heritage Conference; and the dedication of a new wall hanging created by a number of local ladies celebrating the 350th anniversary of the birth of Susanna Wesley; and a living history day with some of the Old Rectory volunteers dressing in costume and carrying out daily tasks that would have been normal daily life for the Wesleys and their family and servants., while visitors on the day will have been regaled with music that the Wesleys would have been familiar with. We are getting towards the end of a packed season but we're not done yet! Join us for "Much Ado about Nothing" with your picnic and chairs, but do remember to dress sensibly for the weather - after all the performance doesn't begin until 7pm and it may turn a little chilly later even if it is only August. Apple Pressing Day this year will be at Wesley Memorial Church but there will be Heritage Open Day at the Rectory for which we are already taking bookings - taster tours every half hour from 2pm to 4-30pm and of course the year finishes off with our Christmas Craft Fair, a very popular event. Keep an eye out for future adverts in this publication for details of all upcoming events, or see our facebook page - Epworth Old Rectory or our new website which should soon be up and running. You can always contact the office Monday to Friday on 01427 872268, or even call in for details and bookings for stalls at the Craft Fair of information on any of the events, or even better - call in and see us about joining the ranks of the volunteers -we need sales and reception volunteers, and guides, and full training and support for both roles is provided - just one half day per week is all the time that's needed can you spare it? Haxey Primary School News What a busy month June has been! Year 2 have been involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in conjunction with British Steel. The whole class researched, designed and made a moving vehicle from a shoe box that needed to carry a passenger securely down a ramp. 4 children, Ava, Ellie-Mae, Kayla and Lucy were chosen to compete against other schools from North Lincolnshire. They were judged on communication skills, research ideas and the final performance of the car. The judges loved the design of Kayla and Lucy’s pom pom sheep car and Ava and Ellie’s unicorn car was like a rocket! It went off the end of the track and they were declared the overall winners in their age category. Well done girls! June has also seen our Year 5 and 6 classes rehearsing for their end of year performance. It was a show-stopping play, filled with laughter, song and dance as they took on the roles of Robin and his Sherwood Hoodies. All the children worked incredibly hard as there were so many lines to learn and dances to remember! It was a truly incredible performance with fantastic singing (and outstanding solos) and amazing acting – King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham were suitably evil! A huge well done to them all. As we come to the end of the academic year, we would like to wish you all a safe and happy summer.

Community News Epworth and District Flower Club The tickets for the Summer Lunch with Floral Demonstration are sold out. That was the opening news at the July meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club. The event is being held as a joint venture with the NSPCC and the proceeds will be split to benefit the NSPCC and Diabetes UK, the charity which the Flower Club is supporting this year. Without more ado, Sandra Meakin, a demonstrator who had travelled from Melton Mowbray was introduced by Ann Everatt , the Club’s Chairman, and she began. Her demonstration title “Déjà Vu”, she explained, had come about when she sorted her garage and found so many items and containers which had been used in past demonstrations. The first arrangement was displayed in a lovely miniature, though not too miniature, wheelbarrow. She began with leather leaf and hosta, variegated box and Fatsia to hide the mechanics and then she used purple stocks and deep pink stocks before producing a specimen which was not easily identifiable. With the knowledge of one member and confirmation of spelling from the internet the flower was named as Cape Fuchsia or phygelius aequalis, a pretty pink pendant flower. Sandra completed her arrangement with pink peonies, tiny, deep purple carnations and small, very pale pink anthuriums. It was quite delightful. The next arrangement was placed in an intriguing long and narrow basket. The club was challenged to guess its original purpose and failed! The foliage for this long arrangement was laurel and hosta and the flowers so carefully and skilfully added were smallish sunflowers, golden gerbera and lilies. A very stunning arrangement was created in what the audience was told was originally a French bread stick basket. The third arrangement was a table decoration containing blue hosta leaves this time. Mock orange, peach chrysanthemums, peach avalanche roses and cream hypericum berries were next used by Sandra and the result was a charming, circular, beautifully summery and somehow calming display. Sandra next produced two metal baskets, one upturned on the other. This time she used dark red “smoke bush” with its almost circular leaves. Then she added yellow roses with a deep orange tinge and smaller burnt orange coloured roses. She completed this arrangement with orange gerbera. The colours working very well together. As Sandra demonstrated she told us in an amusing way about her activities of moving house, sorting

30

the garage and garden and her family wedding flower arranging and church flower festivals which her flower club organised. She also told us about the different suppliers she obtained flowers from and she included the supermarkets. The fifth arrangement was on quite a different theme. She produced a section of railing with a length of chain attached. This represented the Suffragette movement. There was a small container attached at the top of the railing into which Sandra placed purple lisianthus and continued the Suffragette colours of purple and green using stocks, verbena and veronica. She added a similar arrangement at the base of the railings to complete her display. This time the result was almost mysterious and definitely thought-provoking. The final arrangement of the evening was created on the top of a cuboid frame and Sandra draped long palm leaves descending and alchemilla as a base for the flowers. She continued a commentary as she inserted pink roses and large pink lilies. She worked without apparent effort to complete a stunning summery arrangement and carefully inserted a similar arrangement beneath it through the upright frame. Prior to the raffling of eight beautiful arrangements and a bunch of “left-overs” a vote of thanks was given expressing our gratitude for a very interesting evening, the results producing a very summery atmosphere. The usual refreshments were enjoyed and there was time for socialisation before everyone departed. We have gained some new members recently and we have room for more so maybe you would like to join us? We next meet on Monday, 9th September in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey at 7.30pm when Lyn Wherrett, an area demonstrator, will demonstrate on the theme “Ladies that have inspired me”.

NEW BOOK HELPS CHILDREN ‘KNOT’ TO WORRY Misterton mother, Helen Cousin, (pictured) has written a storybook that helps children cope with their feelings to raise funds for her charity, Help Me, I’m Fine. Helen’s daughter, Maisie, took her own life in 2017 – since then, Helen has been fundraising for the charity that helps other young people manage their emotions. The book tells the stories of children, who are reassured by adult figures in their lives that their feelings of unease are completely normal. The adults share their coping mechanisms. Entitled The Knot, Helen explains: “The title of the book refers to the knotting feeling you sometimes get in your tummy and is a universal term. Children as young as five understand what is meant by it, and the idea of the book is to help them. It also demonstrates how everyone can get knots no matter how old they are and – crucially – that there are ways of dealing with them.” There is also a section at the end of the book in which children can share what gives them a knot in their tummies. The book is published by Misterton’s independent publisher, JJ Moffs, based at Grove House Farm business hub. It is on sale there (£4.99) or via the Help Me, I’m Fine Facebook page. Over the last two years, Help Me, I’m Fine has raised tens of thousands of pounds which has paid for vital training in schools across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire to help children cope. Money raised is also being used to form a dedicated sensory garden at Misterton Primary School – Maisie’s old school, where Helen works – this year.

Community News COFFEE MORNNG RAISES OVER £1000 Two charities that have benefitted local people will, in turn, benefit from the proceeds of a coffee morning held at the home of Ian and Melanie Keat last month (Saturday 22 June). The charities to benefit are Motor Neurone Disease Association and Marie Curie, which provides care and support through terminal illness. The sum raised was £1130, which will be divided equally between the two charities. Special thanks to Ian and Melanie for hosting the coffee morning, which saw nearly 60 people come to enjoy their garden – and home-made refreshments. Ian added: “We would like to thank everyone who supported the coffee morning. The atmosphere was great, and people seemed to enjoy themselves. We would like to also thank the people who gave up so much time to become Mel's helpers, the Methodist Church for allowing the use of the car park, and Max and Fabian for expertly executing the raffle.” 2ND WALKING FESTIVAL TAKES IN LOCAL VILLAGES Misterton and West Stockwith, as well as other local villages, feature in this year’s Walking Festival, organised by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. The Festival runs from Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 September and offers 53 different walks. The length of walks ranges from one or two miles to 16 miles – and there’s the chance to walk the whole length of the Canal in three days. Special walks include mushroom and toadstool identification, an evening walk to see bats, a children’s walk – and much more. Walks in and around Misterton and West Stockwith feature in no less than eight walks. Booking in advance is essential for all walks though no ticket is needed. All walks have a competent leader. Most walks are free but walk leaders will take a voluntary collection, which will help pay for publicity and booking charges; any extra money will go towards the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s Restoration Fund.

FOOD BANK HELPED OVER 2000 Bassetlaw Food Bank helped over 2000 adults and over 1000 children in April 2018 to March 2019 by providing 3-day emergency food parcels, an increase of 24% on the previous year. Locally, approaching 2500 bags of provisions have been given to the Food Bank since local organisations began supporting the organisation. Those attending the Food Bank’s AGM in June heard that over 90 volunteers help run the two Food Bank depots in Retford and Worksop and satellite stations. A part-time volunteer coordinator is to be employed in preparation for the busy period of the school summer holidays and autumn. The Food Bank continues to offer educational visits to its distribution centres, and has worked with the National Citizenship Service, offering teenagers life-changing experiences. In 2018, a group of young people raised funds from local businesses then bought items for the Food Bank to distribute. WELL-EQUIPPED ROOM FOR HIRE Bassetlaw Action Centre (BAC) has a room available for community groups and organisations to hire at a reasonable cost. The Community Partnership Room is on the ground floor and is fully accessible to wheelchair users. The room may be used for meetings, training, etc and may be let both during the daytime and evenings. For more information on availability and charges, contact BAC on 01777 709650 or e-mail: reception@bassetlawactioncentre.org.uk. Epworth Music Day 2019 Last Saturday the sun finally shone in Epworth and the rain clouds kept away. Afterall, it was Epworth Music Day – the biggest event in the town’s calendar. Peter Barnard, Co-Director of the day, said ‘This was the 6th one we’ve organised, and what a cracker it was! Over 90 hours of music to sample for free at the 14 different venues around Epworth, with nearly 60 sets of performers across a wide range of genres. It’s such a great showcase for Epworth. As well as many people from the Isle who come out to have a great time on the day, we get a lot of visitors from further afield – Wisbech, Sheffield, Surrey, and even Germany and Houston in Texas! The local shops, cafes and pubs all have a chance to benefit from all this extra footfall. During the daytime, music echoed around Epworth from 9.30am when the bells of St Andrew’s Church rang out, to 5pm. The evening concert in the church was completely full, as were the Queen’s Head and Jinksy’s bar which had organised their own music till late. Epworth was truly in party mode, and it was glorious to see so many people enjoying themselves amid all the wonderful entertainment. We want to thank all the performers who took part on Saturday. All the venues. All the spectators and listeners. All the many sponsors and funders. All the stewards. All my Epworth Music Day committee members. And most of all my fellow director, Kate Billmore. It was her and my idea to create this wonderful celebration of live music in North Lincolnshire, and we're so proud of how fabulously it ran. We're not going to make Epworth Music Day into something it's not. It'll continue to be held in the centre of the village and outdoors; a free to all event; and will be about promoting and celebrating the power of live music. A real community event, put on by the community for the community. Next year it's on Saturday 20 June. Add it to your diary now and spread the word! If you want to play at it, contact me now at peter.barnard@me.com’
