Editors Letter… What a glorious July! The heat wave continued, for 2 weeks, lets hope the sun shines for a glorious August! I am sure all the Summer Fetes and different community events are well under way now….. Rescue Day on the 13th July was an astounding success, the weather couldn't have been more different!! A note for your diary, the Festival of the Plough in Low Burnham. This is a must visit! If you haven't been before make a special effort, its local to you and a great day out for the family! See more details on pages 38 and 39. My daughter at this moment is on a residential break in Anglesey on an Adventure Holiday. The house is very quiet without her! I am sure for all those children who were lucky enough to go on a school trip this year found it very rewarding as we prepare our children for life after school!, I would like to wish everyone who is preparing to move up to a new school and those leaving school to join further education the best of luck! The deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 14th August. Keep your articles coming in and if anyone is interested in advertising please give me a call. Summer’s out, have lots of fun!

ARMED FORCES DAY A two-day display to mark Armed Forces Day (Saturday 29 June) was held in Misterton Parish Church. The event marked this national celebration of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces. A number of residents brought photos and memorabilia. Pictured (right) is local jeweller, Ian Keat, with his late father’s Military Cross. Lt Euan Keat was RMO of No 6 Commando; the MC was awarded for his selfless example and skilful attention that saved the lives of badly wounded men. Misterton resident, Ken Lister, was in the Royal Navy – he is pictured (left) with a card celebrating his 88th birthday, some 70 years after he saw active service as a seaman gunner serving in the

coastal forces. He was involved in the Normandy landings.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.14 by Anthony Catherall

For fourteen years Miss Gertrude Lees had given the players undaunted loyal service as their excellent and dedicated producer but it was to be no more. The players mourned the loss of Gertrude, however they decided between them to carry on serving their public with entertainment. Crucially though, would audiences ever be the same, there was a lot of competition now from film, television and music. 1962 saw Lawrence of Arabia win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Coronation Street was in its third year and gaining in popularity on television, Z Cars had commenced on the BBC. It was the year the Beatles came on the scene, Sir Steve Redgrave was born and Prime Minister Harold McMillan had been in power since 1957. It is interesting to observe that the Programme price for “Breath of Spring” had doubled since the last production to sixpence(6d) value today about ninety pence(0.90) whilst the average wage for an Agricultural Labourer in the Isle was just eight pounds twelve shillings & seven-pence (£8.12.7d). The National average wage however was over four thousand pounds per annum at £4,291.40d. The question was, would future audiences suffer. “Breath of Spring” a comedy by Peter Coke was first aired at the Cambridge Theatre London in 1958. Coincidently, there was a character in the play Detective Sergeant Pape, whilst Epworth also had a policeman called Sergeant Roy Pape a Mowbray Player. Mary Housham was now the producer, Mr E. Wilson, Market Place, Epworth, was now selling the ice cream and sweets, Messrs. M. Prager Ltd. loaned the mink stole, and Mr T.W. Tonge, West End, Epworth, loaned the furniture. The cast of eight all regulars gave a stirring performance. Continued next month, make sure you see a copy of the Arrow

Fine weather brought record crowds to Misterton Village Gala, held at Misterton Sports Social Club Saturday (6 July). The annual event was opened by Cllr Sybil Fielding, Chairman of Bassetlaw District Council, who is a former Misterton girl. She toured the site with Misterton’s District Councillor, Hazel Brand, and met many of the stallholders and visitors.

The junior football teams also had a go at tug o’ war

New attractions this year were paintball target shooting and a juniors’ football tournament, which included tug o’ war as well. The Everett-Fox School of Dance put on a number of displays, and the gala featured some traditional children’s races and games. Many thanks to all who helped organise the event, and to those who turned out to support it. Next year’s Gala is on Saturday 5 July 2014. Photos by Rebecca Blackman.

Epworth Music Day is a community led event organised for the community. For the past 4 years organisers Peter Barnard and Keith Topham have turned Epworth

every 21st June into a space for performers to fill with music, dance and song between the hours of 10am and 10pm. It is informal and importantly it is free – no performers are paid and no listeners of participants pay. Each year it has become bigger and even more successful. This Friday 21st June promised much – with our fingers crossed that the summer weather would return. The day started off cool and damp, but this didn’t deter the musicians who turned up for a 10am start. Music on the lawn outside the Wesley Memorial Church drew a number of interested and intrigued passers by. From music on the lawn the live music extended to the new space at St Andrews Church with folk music by Katy Robinson, Dave Prebble and Peter Barnard – members of The Lys St Georges Folk Dance Band. The South Axholme Academy Wind Band played a great set outside the Wesley and then Kate Billmore and Peter Barnard – members of de Mowbray’s Musicke - led a workshop of medieval dances on the grass outside the church. Kate and Peter moved off to St Andrews to test out the new acoustic with their fine Tudor style instruments. The South Axholme Academy pupils played their set outside the Coop and then back at the Wesley Memorial Church Frank Kelly was running a singing workshop. Throughout the day music carried on outside the Wesley Memorial Church. Most importantly, after lunch the sunshine was out and summer was back in full swing. In the evening the music moved indoors – in case of rain – in the School Room of the Wesley Memorial Church: a full concert with local youngsters in rock band One More Mile an Hour, Lisa and Ella Pickford, Hannah Hobson and then with visitors 3D and Frank Kelly from Leeds and Lincoln. A wonderful concert capped the day’s wonderful music. Lots of different music, dancing and singing; new groups performing and new audiences enjoying the music. Next year Epworth Music Day will fall on Saturday 21 June and organisers Peter Barnard and Keith Topham are already starting to think how to make the day’s music even grander without it losing its informal and free ethos. Six groups have already asked to perform in 2014. Peter and Keith are looking for others who would like to help shape the day and also to help out on the day. If you would like to take part, help with the organisation or help out on the day, please contact Peter on 01427 873937

Westwoodside Church of England School News... At our School, one way we make learning come alive is each class goes on an educational visit away from School each term. Sometimes, an interesting visitor will come into School rather than the children go out. The visits always have a clear focus to support and extend learning in School – as well as being a lot of fun! We are grateful to all the Teaching and Support Staff who spend a lot of time organising the visits which are a highlight of each term for the children. We also realise that such events can only go ahead with volunteer Parents/Carers accompanying – thank you! Westwoodside and Haxey Parks At the beginning of July, our two Years 4 and 5 classes had a Geography field trip to the parks in Westwoodside and Haxey, looking at the landscape and crops being grown. Also the children learnt ICT skills using a macrolens to take close up photos. A big thank you to the Haxey Cricket Pavilion who provided their facilities. Harlow Carr Gardens On a beautiful June day, Mrs Spowage took her F2 class to Harlow Carr Gardens in Harrogate for a ‘Poet-Tree’ workshop. The children explored the natural environment of the gardens as a starting point for writing poetry in collaborative groups. This was an aspirational activity and journey but, as always, the children rose to high expectations. Clumber Park At the end of June, Mrs Delaney and Mrs Dixon took our F1 children to Clumber Park for a ‘Wild Art’ workshop. This involved the children collecting natural materials to create a piece of artwork, further developing the creativity we encourage in School. Do you like our dinosaur? School of Choc During the week beginning 17 June our Year 3 children enjoyed a visit to the School of Choc in Gainsborough. In fact, there had to be three separate visits because of restricted numbers at any one time. (Well done, Mrs Bailey’s organisational skills!) Thank you again to all the Parents/Carers who kindly provided transport. The children enjoyed learning more about the history of chocolate and made chocolate lollipops, solid chocolate shapes in a mould and raspberry chocolate truffles! They had to be very aware of the required hygiene standards – definitely no finger licking allowed!

Max Poole from Garthorpe won the championship, in a race at RAF Barkston Heath near Grantham, covering the East Midlands region, which includes Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire amongst others. Max (10) who is a student at St. Norberts Catholic Academy in Crowle, has already won numerous races around the region, and is set to compete in the National Youth Championships, held this year at Blackpool. He is a member of the local Lincsquad club, and also the BikeBox Racing Team based at Rotherham, and is the reigning local track league champion in his age category. His mother Tracy, stated, "Max loves to race, and is proving to be a talented rider, who seems to possess all the different skills needed to succeed. We would like to thank all the coaches, at the Lincsquad Youth Academy, and Alan Hamshaw at Bikebox for their support in continuing to help Max to keep improving.

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. We have managed it……. West Butterwick held its Sports afternoon on Tuesday 25th June and I am pleased to say that this year the weather was very kind to us. Last year, the sustained and intense rain put paid to any Sports Day at West Butterwick. Overall Winners at West Butterwick were the Blue Team. Sports Afternoon at St Martin’s went ahead on 10t July. Trophy winners were Leon Woodcock, Jack CogganRobinson, Jack Harrison, Brooke Buszard, Maisie Smith, Keane Bates, Abigail Platt, Alexia, Georgia Brown and Ben Carby. Winning team overall was Melwood (Green). Congratulations to all concerned and thank you to our helpers for making these occasions so enjoyable, especially the Parent Helpers and Grandparents for providing those delicious strawberry teas and other refreshments! Looking ahead to the rest of this term, with just under a fortnight to go, West Butterwick School is to welcome two special visitors on Monday 15th July – Mr and Mrs Ray Murphy who will talk to the children all about the Festival of the Plough and the Best Scarecrow Competition for the 2013 event. In addition to this, the children have been involved in an interesting project of late, linked to the windmill restoration on North Street. The Coggon Family who farm in the village very kindly asked if the school would like to put together a time capsule for placement in the windmill’s cap, on completion of its renovation. We have thoroughly enjoyed doing this, creating ‘living history’, anticipating and wondering about the future as well as enjoying a visit to the windmill and Coggon’s Farm on 16th July. At the very end of term, St Martin’s School has an ever-popular Enterprise Day scheduled for Friday 19th July. This project has been running for a year now and this is to be the fifth Enterprise Day. The children are split into groups with a child from every year group. Enterprise groups are led by Year 6 and given a challenge that requires them to design and create an ‘enterprising’ product. We are helping to shape the entrepreneurs of the future! The winning team has a chance to ‘run the school’ for an afternoon, planning lessons/ learning experiences for each class. Children continue to work their hardest right up until the end of term, with a number of them attending the Homework Club at West Butterwick – ‘every day counts’ and their diligence is commendable! Sadly, will be saying ‘goodbye and good luck’ to our Year 6 Leavers on 22 nd and 23rd July at their special Leavers’ Services of Celebration ; St Martin’s - Madison Alcock, George Warman, Thomas Latham, Harry Foreman, Connie Greig, Angel Harrison, Thea Hudson, Owen Woodcock, James Axe, Brittany Wootton, Ben Carby, Chloe Richardson, Deivydas Kalinauskas, Rogeuan Wibberley, Betsie Green, Georgia Brown, Sam Smith and Jimmy Smith. West Butterwick – Alex Wallace Coyle, Lewis Whipham, Rhiannan Chad, Zack Chad, Phoenix Wynne, Owen Ericson and Cameron Ericson. We thank them for all their valuable contributions over the years they have been with us. The Trentside Federation wishes the Arrow Readers an enjoyable and safe summer.

Dear readers, Park on the left-hand side of the road if possible – make it always if it’s at night. In a car park you should reverse into parking spaces. This will make it safer when you’re driving out and more fuel-efficient as you’ll be manoeuvring with a warm engine. Also, it’s easier to steer into a small space backwards rather than forwards – steering effectively with the rear wheels is better for manoeuvring. If reversing into a space, try to start by manoeuvring the car so that the space is straight behind you the less turning you have to do backwards, the easier most people find it to judge. Some buildings have signs saying to park nose in, because of where air intakes are for the ventilation and where car exhaust pipes will be when parked backwards – look for the signs so you don’t gas the occupants! Car sides are often not straight, so watch other things than just the car next to you when lining up in a space. A higher seating position inside the car makes it easier to manage knowing where the corners are when in a tight space. Use your mirrors as well as looking over your shoulder to check how close to things you are, and how straight your vehicle is. And there’s no shame in peering out of an open window to get a better look. At the supermarket, try and park away from trolley parks and corners to avoid your car being damaged. Think about which bit of the car you need access to when you get back to it – so if you have heavy items to lift into the boot, park so it is easily accessible. When reversing in a space, the rear wheels are the point where a car “pivots”, so watching where they are relative to the corner of a wall/other car is really useful. Once they are past the corner, the way you steer relative to it to avoid the corner changes. Parking is now a staple part of the L-test, and it can be quite surprising to see how often people struggle with it, and see the task as particularly stressful. It’s important that you take your time and don’t succumb to pressure by other drivers around you when you are parking – it’s far better to do it right than to do it quickly. Practice is the real key – if you do it often you should be able to do it well. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information by contacting.
