News From Haxey Church of England Primary School Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Normanby Hall as part of their 'homes now and then' topic. They took part in a Victorian washroom activity, looking at how people of that era waked their clothes. They enjoyed using the equipment, but said they rather preferred the modern way of doing the laundry! They also had a look round the hall, a quick play in the playground before making their way back to school. It was very quiet on the us back home! Thanks to all parents who came to help out. The Chair of Governors Mr A Franks recently chaired his last meeting. He has served as a governor and more recently chair for a number of years. He remains the Foundation link governor so will still be involved in school. Many thanks to Mr Franks for all his hard work, effort and time over the years, all being for the benefit of your children. It really has been appreciated. All the best to Mrs Sam JepsonHoulden who takes the chair in September. Enjoy the holidays!

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, July 2014 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: Westwoodside Pavilion, Westwoodside Playing Field, Westwoodside, DN9 2DX Telephone: 01652 618306 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Hallcroft Close, Haxey Works have begun on the new site at Hallcroft Close. On completion, in the first quarter of next year, there will be 13 two-bedroomed bungalows, designed for the over 50’s, wishing to rent in Haxey. Should anyone be interested in renting one of these bungalows, they must get on to the North Lincolnshire Homes website (www.ongo.co.uk) and look for ‘Home choice Lincs’ registering your interest in these properties. This does not compel you to go ahead with the deal, but it is important that you register as soon as you can. Should you have any problem in getting on line, or do not have the relevant IT skills, please telephone 01427 752394 for assistance. NLC public footpaths Unfortunately NLC have had a trailer stolen which has had an impact on the public right of way footpaths being cut back this summer due to it carrying the tractor and specialised cutters. A replacement has been ordered, but in the meantime and it is NLC’s intention to come to the parish on 3rd/4th and 7th July to cut all the public footpaths. WW1 Heritage Commemorations This year marks the centenary of the start of the First World War and Residents will probably be aware that the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society held an Exhibition on the 21st June displaying artefacts, photographs and memorabilia from Parishioners and their relatives from the period. A presentation entitled “The Great War and its effect on Haxey and Westwoodside was also produced and presented by Councillor George Fiddler which amongst other topics covered the last resting places of the “fallen” from the Parish. The exhibition was well attended and received by local Residents and proved to be extremely interesting and informative and the Heritage Society should be proud of the show it produced. The opportunity to see such irreplaceable exhibits and speak with those connected with them was a unique experience and Members of the Parish Council who attended believed it would be useful to consider further opportunities for local Residents to see the exhibits and for the younger element of the Parish in particular to at least see the presentation produced by George Fiddler. Residents will also be aware of the proposed Church Service to commemorate the start of the First World War to be held in St Nicholas Church on 3rd August and this might provide an opportunity for elements of the exhibition to be staged again, in particular the film show. Also, there may be the possibility to stage something in the local schools during the coming months. To that end the Parish Council discussed the subject in the margins of its June meeting and the Council supported the suggestion that a dialogue should be set up with the Heritage Society with the aim of making the information more widely available during this centenary year and to this end a meeting will be set up at the end of July. On a related issue, the Council also discussed the annual Remembrance Parades at the War Memorial and St Nicholas Church and it was considered that both the local schools should be encouraged to participate in the 11th day of the 11th month wreath laying at the War Memorial and that the Parish Council should take an active part in taking this forward with the Schools and that the provision of transport to facilitate children’s representation at the event should be considered. Councillor Fiddler was appointed as the main contact between the Parish Council the Heritage Society and St Nicholas Church. Councillor Smedley would liaise with the local British Legion and Councillor Booth would liaise with the local schools, promoting both the WW1 exhibition during the year and attendance at the Remembrance Wreath lying in November.

Epworth Music Day a Big Hit! What a glorious sight in Epworth on Saturday when it was Epworth Music Day! Crowds thronging about all day through the town, stopping to listen and watch as 40 groups played and sang at 11 venues throughout the town. Event organiser Peter Barnard said ‘Someone commented that it felt like being at the seaside – perhaps Whitby – with the lovely sunshine and lots of people milling about to soak up the atmosphere. Although we couldn’t count them all, we think that there were about 1000 people out enjoying the music. It was the year’s longest day and the town was full of music of all types played outdoors from 10am to 5pm for people to enjoy. Then in the evening the music carried on in St Andrew’s Church when over 160 people crowded in to catch another 3 hours of music. Thanks to everyone involved – all the performers, the organisers and stewards and not least Epworth Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council and Harold Woolgar Insurances for their financial backing. From now on Epworth Music Day will stick to a Saturday and next year it will be on 20 June 2015. Mark it in your diary now!’

ISLE OF AXHOLME INAUGURAL TRACTOR RUN By Anthony Catherall
A month ago, in the most perfect of weather conditions, 42 vintage tractors left the Mowbray Arms car park Epworth on Sunday, 22 June, for the 30 mile trip around roads and tracks in the Central Isle of Axholme. Leading the way was one of the primary organisers Stuart Lindley in his huge John Deere tractor. With almost military precision, the radio controlled convoy of vintage tractors driven by both men and women, traversed unseen parts of North Lincolnshire. Central in the line of tractors was co-organiser Richard Thompson, whilst Geoff Fillingham brought up the rear with a trailer in tow for any breakdowns. I’m pleased to report that there were none. I travelled with driver Ridian Stock in the front Marshall Vehicle, experiencing and enjoying beautiful varied farmland, moving through places in the Isle that I never knew existed, including, Greenham Lane, close to South Engine drain, Haxey Carr and Rocket Lane. Probably another first is that this particular route negotiated some of the lowest and certainly the highest places in the Isle. On the few occasions the convoy emerged onto hard metalled roads passing lovely houses and gardens, many spectators were waiving and cheering as we passed by, the atmosphere was happy and infectious. On schedule at mid-day, the long trail of vehicles trundled along the High Street at Owston Ferry, before parking up alongside the Trent on a very green grassy bank north of the White Hart. The free food and service in the pub was excellent thanks to Pete Smith, welcoming all drivers and associated staff during the one hour break, cask ale was on sale at just two pounds a pint. West Butterwick, the second village we passed through also had roadside spectators as the convoy turned left along West Street shortly to join tracks again to cross Moore’s Farm and Melwood Grange farmland. Emerging at Quarry corner on the Epworth to Ferry road, the convoy was on a hard surface again for the final jaunt back to Mill Farm in Epworth at about 2.40 pm. Many people were gathering in and around the Mowbray pub expectant of the final treat of the day, a fly-past by one of the six Spitfires of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby. Surprising many, exactly at 3pm, the distinctive growl could be heard of the Mk 9 Super Marine clipped wing Spitfire engine, as it came in from the south-west completing four passes by zooming low over the area at about 280mph. The livery of this particular aircraft being one of the last versions of Spitfire’s, was white and grey striped as used in the D day landings. During the run, Graham Kelsey and Dave Knowles helped with the video filming whilst his wife Denise was cajoling us all to buy raffle tickets, she seemed everywhere. The Mowbray Arms must also be thanked for their hospitality. All helpers and there were many, including the main organisers wives and friends must be thanked for their tremendous efforts in making the event most successful. The entrants themselves, were most complimentary of both the interesting and varied route together with terrific organisation, saying they will definitely be back next year. On Thursday 26 June, the official presentation of all the monies raised took place at Lindsey Lodge Hospice in Scunthorpe. Fund raising Manager Vivian Vincent, was delighted to receive a bucketful of cash from the three main organisers totalling a tremendous £1945. Head of fundraising Mel Banham also in attended. The Lindsey Lodge Garden Party and the Second Isle of Axholme Tractor Run will be held again next year on Sunday 21 June 2015, a date for your diary”. For early entry into next year’s event contact Geoff Fillinghan email: roders213@icloud.com – 24 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements telephone 07974433545. A video of the 2014 event will be available shortly, contact Geoff also for your copy.

WINNING WAS CHILD’S PLAY! Boston Park Farm and Tearooms receives a top prize in the Netmums National Outdoor Play awards A MUCH-LOVED local attraction has scooped the runners-up prize in the prestigious Netmums Outdoor Play Awards. Boston Park Farm and Tearooms, based in Hatfield Woodhouse, clinched one of the top spots after being voted for by members of Britain’s biggest parenting site Netmums.com Boston Park is a working farm that set up a Maize Maze in 2000, and then is 2012 they opened and tearooms and now the farm and play areas are open all year round with the Maize Maze open during the summer. The tearooms serve healthy meals, yummy homemade cakes and delicious coffee. There are indoor and outdoor play areas for the children to enjoy and it is especially suited to toddlers with a small indoor soft play area and sandpit. Plus there are all the friendly animals to feed and pet every day. It really is a fantastic place to take your little ones for a couple of hour’s outdoor fun! David Chappell, who lives on and runs the farm in partnership with his wife Mandy and his daughters Lucy Chappell and Ruth Jones, said: “We are delighted to receive this award – it’s wonderful to be recognized for what we do. There’s nothing like letting kids run free outdoors and get up close to farm animals and now we hope to welcome even more families after being recognized by Netmums as one of Yorkshires best outdoor attractions The latest figures show the outdoor attractions sector is worth a whopping £480m to the UK economy and the awards were set up to recognize the growing number of outdoor attractions catering for families across the country. Recent studies have found modern kids spend only ten per cent of their time playing outdoors, four times less than their parents’ generation – but parenting experts are calling for youngsters to spend much more time outside. Over 1.7 million mums, dads and childcarers who are registered Netmums members were eligible to cast their votes in the awards, to find the UK’s best-loved outdoor attractions. Boston Park Farm and Tearooms will receive a string of prizes including a special certificate to display at the venue, an exclusive badge for their website listing, free advertising on Netmums and promotion on the site’s Awards pages. Netmums.com local editor Jane Hornby said: ‘We are so lucky to have lots of fantastic outdoor venues to choose from, but mums and dads rated Boston Park Farm and Tearooms as somewhere extra special. It’s fantastic to know children can enjoy the great outdoors safely and happily at such a lovely venue.” For more information, please contact Ruth Jones on 01302 844818, jones.ruthe@gmail.com or visit their website at bostonpark.com

THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY IS THE UK’S LEADING CARE AND RESEARCH CHARITY FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA AND THOSE WHO CARE FOR THEM. Through campaigning and lobbying we strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through our research programme we work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure Our vision is of a radically improved world for people with dementia. A world where they can have their rights recognised, where they can fully contribute to family and community life and where they can live with dignity, free from discrimination. A world where they, and those who care for them, have their needs fully met. A world, ultimately, where dementia can be defeated. STATISTICS One in three people over 65 develop dementia. There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. Dementia costs the UK ??23 billion, more than heart disease, stroke and cancer. People over 55 fear dementia more than any other condition, including cancer. By 2017, Alzheimer’s Society aims to invest 10 million a year in dementia research There are over 17,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK. Only 43 per cent of people with dementia in the UK receive a formal diagnosis. Two thirds of people in care homes have a form of dementia. One third of people with dementia live in a care home. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community Providing effective support in the community to reduce the time a person with dementia spends on a hospital ward by one week could save at least ??80 million a year. Up to 150,000 people with dementia in the UK are being inappropriately prescribed antipsychotic drugs and these are contributing to 1,800 deaths a year. Dementia is a worldwide challenge. There are currently nearly 36 million people with dementia in the world and the numbers are expected to double every 20 years.

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. We have managed it……. West Butterwick held its Sports afternoon on Thursday 26 th June and I am pleased to say that this year the weather was very kind to us. Overall Winners at West Butterwick were the Red Team. Sports Afternoon at St Martin’s also went ahead with blue skies! Trophy winners at St Martin’s were Maisie Speers, Finlay Phillips, Jack Harrison, Maisie Smith, Isaac Metcalfe, Jackson Swales, Abigail Platt, Olivia Francis and Harry Watts . The winning team overall was Kinnard (Red). Congratulations to all concerned and thank you to our helpers for making these occasions so enjoyable, especially the Parent Helpers and Grandparents for providing those delicious cream teas and other refreshments! Looking back over the last few weeks, there are a number of special events to mention in addition to the above. West Butterwick School welcomed Scunthorpe C of E Primary School on a reciprocal visit. It was lovely to have a chance to catch up with ‘pupil pen friends’ that were established back in the Autumn Term. Our guests enjoyed a visit to Coggon Bros restored windmill, riverside observational drawing, a ‘Features of our Village’ trail and quiz and a worship service in St Mary’s Church delivered by our Lighting the Candle Pupil Worship Leaders. Such visits are interesting from a cultural and social perspective as we can compare and contrast by experiencing different communities first-hand. On 1st July, six South Isle Primary Schools and South Axholme Academy took part in a Year 5 Pilgrimage Event at St Andrew’s Church, Epworth. It was super to come together for a ‘celebration and exploration’ of special journeys and spirituality. On 3 rd July, West Butterwick School participated in ‘Songs of World War One’ at the Baths Hall, Scunthorpe. Twelve schools in North Lincolnshire performed a number of pieces, including ‘It's a long way to Tipperary’, ‘Pack up your Troubles’ and a debut of ‘On the River Marne’ by Martin Watson. They were accompanied by a ‘Music Service Instrumental Teachers Band’ and directed by Sue Hollingworth. There were selected readings from the ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo. The pupils dressed up ‘in-period’ and parents and carers were able to attend also. It was a memorable commemorative occasion. West Butterwick enjoyed sporting success recently, through participating in the ‘Small Schools’ School Games Competition’ at the Costello Stadium in Hull on 7th July. Nineteen small schools took part. West Butterwick came third in the Golf and second in the Orienteering. We are looking forward to more competitive sporting events in the Autumn Term. Both schools in our Federation are coming together for a visit to the Thackray Museum on 16 th July. The Thackray Medical Museum is one of the UK’s largest medical museums and July is ‘Ancient Medicine’ month. This visit will support the Science work of Key Stage 2 pupils linked to The Human Body, as a first-hand educational, entertaining and inspirational experience. As we are now approaching the end of the academic year we are preparing for our Leavers’ Services. Sadly, will be saying ‘goodbye and good luck’ to our Year 6 Leavers on 18th and 22nd July at their special Leavers’ Services of Celebration ; St Martin’s – Charlotte C-N, Ellis, Natasha, Declan, Olivia, Callum, Alexia, Holly, Josh, Tom, Bradley and Harry. West Butterwick – Seb, Travis, Ellie, Eve, Danielle and Daniel. We thank them for all their valuable contributions over the years they have been with us. The Trentside Federation wishes the Arrow Readers an enjoyable and safe summer. Mrs Josephine Buckle – Headteacher – Trentside Federation

“This lovely boy is Bobo, a lovely Collie Terrier Cross who we believe is around 7-8 years old. Bobo has had an awful life so far, spending most of his time chained up, with very little exercise. Despite this, he is a friendly, quiet and gentle boy who desperately needs a loving home where he can have company, but his own quiet space when he needs it. He would suit a quieter family, or an older person with limited mobility, as he doesn’t need long walks. He is happy to sit at your side, and loves snoozing in the sun. If you would like to meet this special boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.”

The Isle of Axholme Lions Annual golf Tournament held at the Lincolnshire Golf Course, Hurst Priory on the 20th June raised approx. £1000 for Lions Charities. Ladies winner was Rema Levers, and the men's Dave Trotter, both being presented with their trophies by last years Lion's president James Mackinlay. Organiser Terry Condliff said "this was the 19th year we have held the tournament and as usual I would like to thank the staff and management of the course for their help and co-operation, all the players who supported the event in such glorious weather and fellow Lions who had helped steward the event on the day, the money raised will go into our charities account, which will be used when needed, to support local, national and international causes"

Now & Then - Then & Now By Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today's images!
Joanne Thompson aged 3 years, stands outside her Grandfather's 'C. Spencer' decorators shop, circa 1966 at High Street Epworth. Former POW (Prisoner of War) in Italy and Master Decorator Clifford Spencer bought this shop above from a Mr Leggott. He learnt his trade at Baines of Crowle. Many people of Epworth employed Clifford during his time at his shop to decorate their homes. "A real craftsman, could Cliff hang wallpaper" an older resident told me recently". Today, Julie Thompson (daughter of Clifford & Mary, formerly of Graizelound) lives in the bungalow behind the current shop and she told me, "Bill & me took over following Dad's retirement we have very fond memories of that shop, with a our shed and small orchard (pictured above) at the rear. There was also a garage that was behind the brick wall between the shop and the first ground floor window, we later converted it to make a larger shop. We used to trim the wall paper in the room above where we see the two windows fronting the street. Julie goes on to say that, the next owners were Dennis & Jean Turner who then sold it onto Tony Chu. In my opinion, the exterior façade on the corner today, looks ugly and garish complete with extractor tubing unconcealed at the rear. I'm surprised planners allow such features that spoil the look of this business today, in the rather quaint Epworth High Street, surely influencing visitors, as my picture of Spring 2014 clearly shows. Pleasing though, we at last have another useful decorators shop today situated at Albion Hill.

VILLAGE GALA ATTRACTS THE CROWDS Hundreds of visitors flocked to Misterton’s annual village Gala, which was bathed in sunshine after a wet morning. Notts Police dog handlers showed off their dogs’ skills; Jed Hallam demonstrated how to make horse shoes and shoe a horse; children’s races; and performances by local theatre group, Be’dazzled, and Everett-Fox School of Dance were among the attractions to entertain the crowds. A day-long programme of live music featured local singers and bands, and 30-plus stalls and other attractions provided something for everyone. Profits from the Gala will again go to local charities and good causes. Pictured is a police dog in action, horse-shoeing, a kidi moto bike race, and young dancers from the Everett-Fox School of Dance. Many thanks to the organising team for putting on another successful event, to those who donated prizes, stallholders and performers, musicians and compere, and those who turned up on the day. Put the date in your diary! Next year’s event is scheduled to be on Saturday 4 July 2015.

Now Is The Time Dear readers, Now is a good time to treat your car to a spring clean. Salt is a corrosive and will cause rusting if left on the bodywork. If possible take your car to a car wash that specialises in under-car cleaning to get rid of every trace. The UK pollen season starts around now and can be pretty miserable for hay fever sufferers, so replacing your car’s pollen filter annually is a vital investment. Keeping your air-con well maintained would help, too. Servicing your air-con will help your car smell better. If it smells stale when you turn the heating on, it could well be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser. Flies will soon be out in force so be sure to refill your washer fluid. Habitually washing the windscreen and headlamps when you stop for fuel is also important as windscreen wipers won’t get rid of all the fly debris. Old wiper blades are not only deafening, they can leave marks on the windscreen, so remember to replace them regularly. After the dust that has fallen from the volcanic ash cloud, it is particularly important that you clean them regularly to avoid damaging your windscreen. Checks should be made regardless of the season: “Anti-freeze contains corrosion inhibitors so you should keep your car topped up with the right mixture all year round; going without could lead to expensive internal damage such as a blown head gasket,” added Mr Rodger. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information by contacting.
