FIRE STATION RECRUITING STAFF This month, Misterton Fire Station is recruiting for firefighter training courses that begin in January 2017. The Station is presently running at around 50% of ideal staffing levels – so this means the Station cannot provide a 24/7 service. Being an on-call firefighter is a rewarding and exciting way to serve your local community, as well as earn an extra income - firefighters receive a monthly 'retainer' fee, plus additional payments for attendance at incidents, training sessions and other duties. Female firefighters are underrepresented at Misterton, being one of the few stations in the county with no female personnel. Local women are encouraged to consider the fire service as a second or part-time role, which could tie in around a full time job, school hours, childcare, or a partner’s shift patterns, etc. So if you think you’ve got what it takes, or would just like to know more, give Watch Manager Andy Horton a call on 07881 880383 or call into the station any Tuesday evening, between 6.30 and 9.00pm.

National Youth Bell Ringing Contest 2016

The contest is a straight forward striking contest – the band that strikes its bells best wins. This year the competition was held in London on Saturday 2nd July with a sign on (register) and brunch. Those competing must be 18 or under. A band representing North Lincolnshire given the name ‘Lincolnshire Poachers’ was entered. Nathan Williams aged 14 of Belton was selected to be a member of the team of eight ringers. He is a member of the Epworth and Belton group of ringers. Twenty four teams of eight took part and the initial heats were on three suitable London towers which included the Jubilee Bells which have been hung at the Church of St James, Garlickhythe. ‘Lincolnshire Poachers’ were drawn to ring on the bells at St Dunston in the West. The youngsters did very well scoring an ‘A’ but just missing short of going through to the final. Nathan rang with the team last year when they scored a ‘B’ in Oxford. The final was held at St Olave’s, Hart Street, near Tower Hill and the outright winners were from Hertfordshire. Next year the competition is to be held in Birmingham. A team representing South Lincolnshire took part and they scored a ‘B’.

By 2021 this will reach 1 million and by 2051 there will be 2 million people living with dementia in the UK alone. 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. 70% of people living in care homes have dementia or severe memory problems. In South Yorkshire there are more than 16,866 people diagnosed with some form of dementia, and over 3,877 of those people live in the Doncaster area.

The youngsters also had the opportunity to ring on a number of London Bells of note including Bow Bells and St Martins in the Fields. Nathan was one of the lucky few to be drawn out of the hat to view the bells and ringing chamber of St Paul’s Cathedral. The largest bell at St Pauls weighs 61 cwts whilst that at Epworth is 17cwt. Nathan will have to grow a little before he can ring at St Paul’s! Such was the standard of ringing exhibited I would challenge anybody who thinks that ringing has no future! Melvyn Rose

Epworth Music Day 2016 Photograph by Mr Anthony Catherall

One Saturday in June saw Epworth once more come alive to the surround sound of music, song and dance. From 10am to 11pm, 45 groups/acts performed in 13 venues across the centre of town. A total of over 70 hours of free music. Director of Epworth Music Day, Peter Barnard said ‘Although the day started cold, at least it was dry in contrast to the wet weather of the previous week. Undeterred, the performers started to entertain us at 10am. By 11am it was starting to warm up and the crowds started to build and they then stayed throughout the afternoon, soaking up the fun atmosphere. This was Epworth having a ball! The day is all about promoting all types of music to as wide an audience as possible and enabling many people to sample good quality music outdoors in Epworth. It is also about providing a platform for performers to play, sing and dance in a community setting. The committee of 6 directors – Kate Billmore, John Lambert, Jake Stockwell, Nicky Thomas, Peter Davies along with myself – saw our 5 months of preparation for the day pay off. Their hard work made the day happen. I also want to thank the stewards - who were described as being ‘friendly and helpful’ - as well as our financial backers, Epworth Town Council, Harold Woolgar Insurances and the Khyber Restaurant.

We have received some great feedback from people attending the day’s entertainment, as well as from performers and local traders. We are particularly pleased that the day was a success for local traders. Two said that their takings on Saturday were the best ever. Some cafes extended their opening hours till teatime and were busy all day. One pub had queues for beer that snaked out the back door. One trader said that it was ‘great to see Epworth so busy on a Saturday’ and another that ‘Epworth Music Day brings the town to life and it is great to see visitors enjoying the day’. A visitor to Epworth said that they ‘did not know about it until they saw the noticeboards at the side of the road near where they were staying. They thought they would come and have a look and stayed all day’. Epworth Music Day 2017 will be held on Saturday 24 June. Many groups have already signed up to perform. If anyone else would like to appear, they should contact Peter Barnard on 873937 or peter.barnard@me.com

“OUTCASTS” Cricket Club comes in from the Cold! It is exciting times for a North Lincolnshire village cricket club as they prepare to officially open a new pavilion and facilities on Sunday August 21st, with a festival of cricket and family entertainment. Outcasts Cricket Club, have been in existence since the late 1940’s. The rather unusual name comes from a breakaway group of players unable to secure a place in the local Isle of Axholme teams. The club moved to the picturesque ground at Hirst Priory in 1976, where the facilities have remained relatively untouched ….. until now! In January this year work began on the new facility which has been made possible through a grant received from Scottish Southern Energy (SSE) and their commitment to local leisure projects, and further funding from North Lincolnshire Council. What stands today in a state of art facility boasting bar, kitchen and changing facilities. The facility is not only used for cricket, but also for social events, meetings and children’s parties. In recent years this success has been mirrored on the field. In 2015 the 1st XI were Division 1 champions for the first time, and this year they are making their debut within the Lincolnshire Premier League. The club boasts a Second and Third XI and also a Midweek Evening League Team. Most pleasing has been the developments within the junior section of the club, which has seen numbers swell in last couple of years. Local children between 8 and 15 now receive expert training on a weekly basis, and the club fields Under 11’s , 13’s and 15’s teams. Sunday 21st August 10 am – 10pm , will be an opportunity to celebrate all these developments with an Open day to which the club would like to invite as many people from the local community and beyond. The day will see a number of local bands performing and kids entertainment including face painting, treasure hunts and bouncy castle. There will be a Hog Roast, Bake Off competition and Beer Tent, to ensure all guests are fed and “watered”. The cricket tournament will see local teams from Outcasts, Luddington and Haxey compete alongside a Macmillan Cancer Invitational Team. The club are teaming up with Macmillan Cancer Care (a charity close to the heart of a number of members) on the day and will ensure a donation is made from the day’s events. There will be a number of prizes to be won and an auction on the day, as well as the official “cutting of the ribbon.” Chairman of Outcasts Cricket Club Mark Coulman said “The new facilities at the club are a significant boost to the local community, and offer a great opportunity for families to become more involved in cricket and other social activities. I would like to thank SSE and North Lincolnshire Council for their financial support, and to all the local tradesman involved in the pavilion development. Our opening on the 21st August should be a fantastic mixture of family entertainment and cricket and I encourage everyone to come and spend some time at our great new ground” Further information on the event can be found via the club Facebook and Twitter pages

Introducing... the tree bumblebee Bombus Hypnorum - this little chap with a white furry bottom is particularly active now, and a small number of them are probably doing figures of eight by your garage roof, or outside a nesting box on your apple trees....(My bee-keeper chums who are on the council’s list for honey bee swarm collection have been inundated with calls)... if you have them, don't worry. They are not interested in you, these are the drones on the lookout for a queen... they are relatively benign and if you try and move them you will kill them. Come the end of July the whole colony except the queens die off. The queens hibernate until March. Honey bees are the only bees to go through the winter as a colony. Have a look at British beekeepers website to help identify bees. http://www.bbka.org.uk/help/do_you_have_a_swarm.php If you ring the council with a problem about bees they will give you the phone number of one of the members of Doncaster Beekeepers association. They get a lot of calls, and if it is a genuine swarm of honey bees will be happy to help as long as they aren’t somewhere inaccessible like a chimney or at the top of an enormous tree. The council ( because of the cuts) have no one to deal with bees now. So please take some time and properly identify your bees before making that phone call. Bumble bees are a protected species. They will not sting you unless they feel you are about to threaten their colony. You can follow them around and even let them walk on your hands. Enjoy them!

This beautiful girl is Daisy, a 6 year old Border Collie cross. Daisy is a very affectionate, loving girl who is very well behaved in the house, and both on-and off- the lead. We are looking for an active home ideally with experience of the breed, as she can be quite strong-willed, as Collie owners will understand! Daisy is fine with most other dogs, but is not suitable for a home with young children. Daisy is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting this smashing girl, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705
