Welcome to the August issue of the Arrow!

England in a World Cup semi-final, who would have thought it some will say? The last time the Three Lions could boost such was on July 4, 1990. Of the 23 players currently in Russia, 16 were not alive when Bobby Robson's men lost to West Germany on penalties. It was a memorable victory for England as they beat Sweden 2-0 to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 28 years. By the time you receive your copy of the Arrow we will know whether we have won the World Cup! Is football coming home? Enjoy the read and please note the deadline for the September issue is Wednesday 15th August for distribution by the 1st September. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date.

Community News The Apple of Your Isle – Apples Day Do you grow apples in your garden? Or perhaps you would be interested in growing fruit? If you have apple trees, maybe you’re nervous about looking after them and pruning them? Perhaps you have some old apple varieties that you can't identify? If any of this rings a bell with you, then following the great success of the event last October, The Apple of Your Isle will be staging another Apple Day on Saturday 13 October from 11 to 3pm at the Old Rectory gardens in Epworth. Among the things on offer will be a chance for you to bring some of your apples and help turn them into apple juice (maximum 2 supermarket bags of fruit; you will need some bottles to take the juice home in). We’ll have experts on hand to help you identify your apples and there’ll be some short workshops on how to prune your trees. There will be music, apple related produce to sample and buy, as well as games to play. All this, and there’s no charge to attend. It should be a great day out. For more details contact Ann Hindley at ann@hindley.gn.apc.org or follow us on our facebook page.

Handlebards 2018 Summer Tour

Romeo and Juliet @ Epworth Old Rectory

Friday 31 August 2018 Tickets available from

www.handlebards.com Gates open 5.30pm, performance start time 6.30pm Don’t forget to bring your picnic! Rectory St Epworth Doncaster DN9 1HX HandleBards are the world’s first cycling theatre company. Before touring their “seriously silly “production of Romeo and Juliet around the world, they pedalled it 1500 miles around the UK by bicycle, with all the necessary set, props and costume in tow. Now, the show is back by popular demand - and, in usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter. Join the HandleBards’ all-female troupe in the beautiful gardens at Epworth Old Rectory for Romeo and Juliet on Friday 31 August 2018 as you’ve never seen it before! And what’s the play about? Well - Romeo and Juliet fall in love, despite the fact that both their families hate each other. Hilarity ensues... Well, sort of…. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at a party, despite the fact that both their families hate each other. They know that they will never be allowed to marry in public, so they elope, and with the help of Friar Laurence, marry in secret instead. Unfortunately, before their wedding night Romeo kills Juliet’s cousin in a duel, and in the morning, he is forced to leave her. If he ever returns to the city, he will be put to death. Juliet’s parents have told her that she must marry Count Paris, but they do not know that she is already married. At first she refuses, but later agrees because she plans to fake her death and escape to be with Romeo forever; again with the help of Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence designs the plan and gives Juliet a sleeping potion that will ensure she appears lifeless. He fails however, to enlighten Romeo as to the plan’s design. So, Romeo then does what all good lovers would... Praise for the HandleBards ★★★★★ - “Five stars just don’t seem enough...” - The Sunderland Echo ★★★★★ - “I laughed until I cried, there’s nothing else out there like The HandleBards.” - The Shields Gazette

★★★★★ - “There is never a moment when the audience is not laughing.” - Broadway Baby ★★★★★ - “A hilarious, heart-felt, high-octane show.” - Young Perspective ★★★★★ - “An unexpected delight and a must-see!” - EdFringe Review

We fetch you our latest news from Haxey C of E Primary school as we enjoy the glorious sunshine fetching brightness to our day. As usual we've had lots going on. Our fantastic PTFA have been hard at work and organised a fun packed summer fayre on Tuesday 26th of July. School was host to a variety of activities and stalls including hook a duck kindly provided by Haxey Pre-School, silent raffle, slush and ice cream, cream teas, lucky dip, painted rocks, a visit from the Donkey or two from Tia rescue, face painting, coloured hair spray, cake stall, Nerf gun shoot out, coconut shy, bouncy castle and for the first time, crazy golf! The talented dancers from ENA academy put on a performance for us all to enjoy under the watchful eye of Miss Nichola. The dancers were marvellous and did a great job in such warm conditions. It was well attended and we would like to thank everyone for supporting this event. A total of £1300 was raised which is outstanding! The money raised will go towards the provision of equipment for our children's learning enrichment. On Wednesday 27th June we held our years 5 and 6 performance, this year being 'Zoom!' - a modern take on the classic tale of 'The Hare and the Tortoise'. There were 2 performances in our school hall, with packed audiences enjoying the singing, dancing and quality acting. Each and everyone of the cast worked so hard, and it certainly paid off. Well done everyone especially to our behind the scenes staff, and to Mrs McKay and Mrs Benham who directed the show. Our children in FS2 visited the 20/21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe on Monday 2nd July. They took part in lots of arts, crafts and design activities which links into their current topic of 'Mini Beasts'. They enjoyed a picnic before heading for a fun afternoon at Cheeky Chimps soft play. What a busy day! On Monday 2nd July year 6 set off for their annual 3 day activity packed trip to PGL, who advertise 'an educational adventure to remember', and it was certainly that and then some! First of all, the weather was kind and did not put a stop to the busy activity programme. There were challenges and fun pack adrenaline fuelled activities helping our children develop their resilience, self confidence and team building. We hope these essential skills help them as they transition to their next learning journey at secondary school. Thank you to the children and for the teachers for being away from their own home and families. It was ready, steady go on Friday 6th July as we held our sports day. The reds, blues and greens work really hard in their individual teams taking part in events including running, egg and spoon, sack, obstacle and the all important grown up races! We are incredibly proud of all the children who took part, and send congratulations to the winning team. Thank you to all staff who help organise sports day, with over 100 races it is no mean feat!

Haxey Women’s Institute Our last 2 meetings have both been around the subject of FOOD – a subject close to all our hearts! In June, we were lucky enough to welcome Richard Mottram of Piper’s Crisps. He gave us an insight into the ethos of this well-known brand, how the business has developed over the years and how their popularity has grown. Every packet identifies the sources of the ingredients, whether from local suppliers or from further afield and the company is proud to be able to maintain this integrity. Piper’s are always experimenting with new flavours and WI members were fortunate in being able, not only to sample the crisps, but also to take numerous packets home! All in all, a very convivial evening. Our July meeting was entitled ‘Fish, Chips and Fun’ and that is exactly what we got – plus some chocolate rum truffles into the bargain! Andy Lloyd, from near Wakefield, began with a humorous demonstration of making the truffles, whilst his wife Jean and colleague Caroline prepared our supper of delicious fish, chips and mushy peas. Once we’d eaten, Andy then entertained us with songs from Elvis, Roy Orbison, The Bee Gee’s, Cliff and various other popular singers, all interspersed with a good dose of humour! Another excellent evening enjoyed by members and several guests. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st August, when the subject will be ‘Travel can be Tedious’ Some dates for your diary: on Saturday August 4th, we are holding an ‘EQUALITEA’ to celebrate 100 years of Women’s Suffrage; venue Westwoodside Village Hall, 2pm to 4pm, entry cost £3, with Tombola and Raffle. All welcome – including men!! Christmas Shopper Trip to York – Monday 19th November 2018 – more details to follow!

SPORTING SUCCESS FOR LOCAL SCHOOL. Westwoodside Church of England Academy have seen success with a National award for their commitment and passion for sport. The Community Education Awards organised in association with The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain and Costa has awarded the school a Highly Commended award from over 7,500 entries across Britain. 12 months ago Westwoodside was identified as a local school which needed to improve the health and fitness of its young people. They have worked hard to change that description and are now considered an active school with 100% of pupils being described as healthy and active in a recent audit. The school has worked closely with partner agencies Get Ahead, North Lincolnshire School Sport Network, Fit 2 Play, 780 coaching and Street Beat to encourage activities in the playground, as well as a wide range of clubs and groups before and after school. The children have succeeded in sport events involving football, netball, swimming, dance, rugby and street sports amongst others. To win the award, the school demonstrated how they increased children’s participation in clubs, offering every child the opportunity to represent the school in sports’ festivals organised on the Isle of Axholme, and participating in inter school and intra school competitions. Head Teacher June Richardson said, “I am very proud that everyone at Westwoodside Academy has been recognised for their achievements. It is wonderful to receive this highly commended award as a Sports’ Promoting school. The children and staff have worked so hard and sport and fitness are now a passion that runs through everyone in our school. The children enjoy the activities, they are excited by the sports we offer and develop skills as sports’ leaders. Our staff are equally enthused by sport. We now even have staff challenging themselves in sporting events and races.” For further details about the award and how Westwoodside Church of England Academy are using sport within school please contact June Richardson Head teacher on 01427 752355 or via email admin.westwoodside@northlincs.gov.uk.

Epworth Music Day 2018 Sunday morning in Epworth. Well, the sun's shining and it's a quiet Sunday morning. Bit like any other summer Sunday. So, what happened in Epworth yesterday? Was there really over 80 hours of music stretched across the daytime and evening? With so many, so many people about. Peter Barnard, Co-Director of Epworth Music Day, said ‘I had thought that Epworth Music Day 2017 had been special, and now I know just how special it was. Last year we gave those who were at Epworth Music Day 2017 so much fun that they got what we have created. And they wanted it again, yes they wanted more please!! And yesterday, here in Epworth at Epworth Music Day 2018 they turned out to have their fun repeated. And they brought their friends, family and neighbours – just as we'd asked!! So, I'm very pleased and proud of what we have brought to this community. And what an awesome day it was. We want to thank all the performers who took part yesterday. All the venues. All the spectators and listeners. All the sponsors and funders. All the stewards. All my Epworth Music committee members. And most of all my fellow director, Kate Billmore. It was her and my idea to create this wonderful celebration of live music in North Lincolnshire, and we're so proud of how fabulously it ran. We're not going to make Epworth Music Day into something it's not. It'll continue to be held in the centre of the village and outdoors; a free to all event; and will be about promoting and celebrating the power of live music. A real community event, put on by the community for the community. Next year it's on Saturday 22 June. Add it to your diary now and spread the word! If you want to play at it, contact me now at peter.barnard@me.com’ One of the many spectators in Epworth on Saturday said ‘A huge thank you to the organisers for yet another wonderful Music Day. It is a brilliant event and brings the community together in the best possible way. The format is perfect, we are already looking forward to the next one in 2019.’
