Welcome to the August issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. It seems a long time ago since March 2020; the lockdown in the UK! We are now in the Summer holidays, and the UK seems to be moving into a stage of near normality. Most people are back at work, home schooling is now at an end, and I think like myself all parents with young children will be happy to see the kids back at school, college and university in September! We are pleased to say advertisers are still supporting the Arrow and we welcome new customers every month. The big event in July took on a virtual aspect this year; Rescue Day 2020. If you would like to see the virtual experience check them out on facebook. There is a link to donate to the charities they support. Next years date is already set and they are taking bookings for stalls. The Arrow is looking forward to receiving your news articles and any social distancing events or virtual events you may have. Keep your articles coming in. Its important to keep the community spirit going! The deadline for the September issue is Friday 14th August for delivery by Sunday 30th August. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Community News Bransby Horses is now open to the public after keeping spirits up during Lockdown. Lincolnshire-based equine charity, Bransby Horses, was delighted to announce that they reopened their doors to the public at 10am on Wednesday 8th July 2020. The site is still free entry and initially will be running at reduced days and hours, open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am until 3pm. In line with the UK Government response to the coronavirus, the Charity is asking visitors to ensure they adhere to social distancing regulations and plan for their visit by finding more information and FAQs at www.bransbyhorses.co.uk As well as a newly refurbished Gift Shop and Donated Goods Shop and additional picnic fields, visitors can now pre-book a packed lunch or breakfast, through the new Click and Collect Café service that will be available on the Charity’s website from Tuesday 7th July. The site in Bransby, which welcomes thousands of visitors each year, closed to the public on 20th March 2020. During Lockdown the Charity has been busy keeping the hundreds of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that live at the Bransby and Barlings sites, safe and well. Since March, measures have been in place to keep employees healthy and safe, strictly following Government guidance including social distancing, office employees working from home where appropriate, high standards of on-site hygiene and strict sanitation.

Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster A local walk from Epworth Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code. People in England can exercise with up to five others from different households provided physical distancing guidelines are followed. People living alone or single parents with children under 18, can meet outdoors. Give way to other walkers. Epworth, on the very edge of what we would class as local, (from Doncaster) and at 6 miles a bit over what’s classed as short. Plus, we’re not in Yorkshire. Has this walk go anything going for it? Well Epworth itself is worth a visit, with its long history and association with Methodism. And the walk, mostly flat, the odd navigation challenge, and crops as far as the eye can see plus two splendid old windmills. I began on Vinegarth a quiet cul-de-sac at the edge of the village, but the aim is to get to Greengate and head south to reach Rectory Street. Almost directly opposite (slightly off to the right) take the footpath south 1. You are now on the Peatland Way (not for long) then after 420m turn right and continue in a westerly direction first crossing Burnham Road then passing a cemetery on the right before reaching after 500m a crossing of paths. The OS map shows the FP heading diagonally across the field, but the route has been diverted right, then left around the field edge. 2. Turn left them immediately right to head in a westerly direction again and after 210m go through the old underpass and continue in the same direction for 670m to reach Turbary Road. At a T junction 660m on, turn right (Carrside) then after 180m left and follow the wide footpath along the edge of Epworth Turbary Nature Reserve, until eventually turning right and right again after 640m. You are now about halfway round, and heading back 3. Continue in an easterly direction for ½ mile with stream/drain on left when the path turns left-right to continue for another 640m to reach West End Road. Turn left and after 65m right. In 110m there is a T junction, turn right, and continue for 145m turn left and follow the path and swing to the right, reaching after 225m another T junction. Follow the path as it climbs slightly uphill, joining at the summit the Peatland Way 4. Continue on the Peatland Way for about 450m enjoying the view of two splendid windmills before reaching the A161. Turn right then almost directly opposite the second windmill turn left and continue along the Peatland Way as it turns right heading south to merge shortly after with Hollingsworth Lane and the start of the walk This would make a great day out, mid morning ramble followed by an afternoon stroll around Epworth Courtesy of Doncaster Ramblers

COMMUNITY NEWS Isle dance 4 Health We know how much our dancers value the activity and social interaction that our weekly folk dances provide. Now that the country is starting to emerge from the blanket lockdown, we’ve been considering the next steps for these dances. It’s not easy, but in short, we won’t be restarting the weekly dances after the summer. We’ll review the position if things change dramatically. We’ll also address the position for our dances next spring. We will meet up and dance again - all in good time - and safely. Peter Barnard and Kate Billmore
Isle of Axholme Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Group
We normally have local monthly meetings from October to May each year but because of Coronavirus everything has changed. We don't know what the situation will be in the next few months but when it is safe to resume indoor meetings we will let you know via the Arrow and the Lincolnshire Trust website. However we can still enjoy the countryside and watch out for the wildlife that is all around. If you need any more information you can contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051

Restaurants and other establishments serving food for on premises consump on can now sign up to a new government ini a ve aimed at protec ng jobs in the hospitality industry and encouraging people to safely return to dining out. The Eat Out to Help Out registra on page is live on GOV.UK, allowing businesses to join the scheme announced in July by Rishi Sunak MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer. Restaurants, bars, cafes and other establishments who use the scheme will offer a 50% reduc on, up to a maximum of £10 per person, to all diners who eat and/or drink‐in throughout August. Customers do not need a voucher as par cipa ng establishments will just remove the discount from their bill. Businesses simply reclaim the discounted amount through an online service, supported by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Claims can be made on a weekly basis and will be paid into bank accounts within five working days. The scheme is open to eligible establishments across the UK and can be used all day, every Monday to Wednesday, between 3 and 31 August 2020.
