Editors Letter.... Christmas is a time of great celebration, particularly for kids who, normally, are the main beneficiaries of so many presents that they don't know what to do with them! For adults it is often an occasion for taking holidays from work, and spending time with the family. Despite the fact that Winter has well and truly made its presence felt , it is also a 'feel good' time of year for many people. One of the great things about this time of year is that it gives us the excuse to exchange positive pleasantries with people we might barely know, and possibly to say really nice things to people we know very well. So remember the people in your area who are on their own this Christmas, make an effort to visit and say ‗Merry Christmas‘. Did you know that Boxing Day originated under Queen Victoria when trades people collected their Christmas Boxes or bonuses for their hard work throughout the year?
I am sure there are many Christmas events this year, there is a Christmas Market in the new Crowle market Square on Saturday 11 December. If you haven't seen the new square, be sure to make a visit. Don't forget to watch out for Father Christmas on his sleigh who will travel the Isle throughout December, a well worth charity by the Lions. Also, congratulations to the ladies at Mowbrays of Haxey, (a new delicatessen and coffee shop) opened its doors on the 17th November. Pop in and have a look you wont be disappointed. Best Wishes, have a lovely Christmas and don't forget to hang up your advent calendar on the 1st December.

Do you know that you have an O.M.O. when you retire? Today in the UK the above is an abbreviation for Open Market Option; this is the option at your selected retirement age to transfer your pension fund to any other provider who will give you a better rate or better options than your existing Scheme, free of any penalties. The options available are many, including Annuity Purchase which can be guaranteed or Investment Linked, they can also index or remain level, pay a proportion to a surviving partner, there are temporary annuities, and Income Drawdown Plans, where the fund remains invested and you then take an income from it. In addition If your health or lifestyle (smoking, drinking, obesity) is expected to lead to a reduced life expectancy, you could qualify for an ‗enhanced‘ annuity, which provides a higher rate of income compared to a standard annuity. This is because an enhanced annuity is based on your personal circumstances, rather than just an average for your gender and age group. Estimates suggest that up to 40% of the retiring population are eligible for an enhanced annuity yet, in the first quarter of 2009, only 10% of retirees were actually taking advantage of this. Enhanced retirement annuities are designed specifically for this 40% group; providers are able to underwrite each case individually to offer the best income rate possible. In our experience the above can be quite a daunting process to people retiring. I think you will agree Faced with new adventures and directions, retirement can be both an exciting and anxious time. There are many important issues to consider and one of these is undoubtedly 'how do I make the most of my carefully built up pension fund?' That is where we come in, as Independent Financial Advisers (IFA‘s) we can search the whole market place to find the best retirement income for your specific needs. We will also assist in the completion of those Tax Returns that you get at retirement. We believe using an Independent Financial Adviser at this time makes sense, we are therefore without any obligation offering you the First Appointment Free for you to make your own mind up regarding using our services, and assure you the only decision you will have to make on the day is the choice of Coffee or Tea.

A first-hand account of former cricketer Ian Botham’s charity walks – which to date have raised £12 million for Leukaemia Research – was given to members of the Epworth Men’s Society at their meeting on Monday night (November 1). It was given by his mother-in-law Janice Waller from St Nicholas Road in Thorne. She is one of the volunteers who man a support vehicle that accompanies Ian when he undertakes one of his walks either in this country or abroad. About 40 members attended the meeting in the church hall adjacent to the town‘s St Andrew‘s Church and they were told that Ian has now been undertaking his charity walks for 25-yers. ―He is often accompanied by other celebrities, who all try different ways of raising money,‖ said Mrs Waller. She concluded by saying that it was becoming increasingly difficult to walk on roads – due to safety considerations - and that next year In will be undertaking a walk in the grounds of a National Trust property. At the end of her talk Mrs Waller – whose son-inlaw Ian used to live in Epworth - was presented with a cheque to help swell funds for Ian‘s next walk.

Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).
Friday 24th December – Christmas Eve at 6.00pm Crib Service and at 11.30pm Midnight Mass.
The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft is home to the world‘s largest collection of preserved trolleybuses, opening selected weekends throughout the year. Visitors on open days can take a journey back in time on one of many finely preserved working trolleybuses in the collection. Visitors can also wallow in the nostalgia of our 1950‘s/60‘s pre-fab bungalow and shop window displays and discover the various exhibits which extend well beyond the transport theme. The MLA‘s Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for all museums in the UK. The Trolleybus Museum‘s award proves it measures up, meeting the guidelines on how it is run; how it looks after its collection and services it provides its visitors. Graham Bilbé, Museum Chairman, said, ―I was delighted to hear the news that we have been awarded Accreditation. It is a significant advance in the continued development of our museum and a hearty thank you to all those dedicated volunteers involved.‖ Andrew Motion, Chair of MLA, said, ―Being awarded Accreditation is an impressive achievement. It recognises the high standard and service that The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft provides and acknowledges the hard work of its volunteers.‖ The Trolleybus Museum is next open on Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th December for Santa Weekend . Axholme South Neighbourhood Priority One - St Martin’s Church and Castle Hill, Owston Ferry – Anti-social behaviour, underage drinking, criminal damage and drug offences. We have received reports of youths congregating around the church and Castle Hill mainly of an evening which is impacting on local residents and the church and its grounds. Due to the locality it does make it difficult for these people to be seen ordinarily and is an ideal area for groups to gather. There is also evidence of empty bottles of alcohol and other litter have been found. We make regular patrols of the area and have already seized alcohol from underage teenagers and also processed persons for possession of cannabis.
PC Constable 1839 Tina Starbuck
UPDATE; - Calls for service to the area have decreased. We have made regular patrols at this location and the village. We have actively engaged with groups of young people whilst in the village and at the church, but none of those spoken to have had any alcohol or other contraband on them. We continue to patrol and monitor the issue. GOOD NEWS;2 males are currently on bail for taking a motor vehicle without consent in the Westwoodside area. A male from the West Butterwick area has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage in Epworth and is currently on bail pending further investigation. LIFESTYLE 2010 - A group of 4 pupils who all attend South Axholme School and who participated in Lifestyle 2010 have reached the final of the competition. The prize winners will be announced at the award ceremony at Hull City Hall on Tuesday 9th November 2010, with the top prize being a fabulous trip to Florida. These community spirited young people called KADA – Kids Against Domestic Abuse have been raising funds for local refuges, raising awareness to combat domestic abuse and to promote zero tolerance to violence and abuse in domestic relationships. The team attended Epworth Police Station on Monday 25 th October to meet up with the Judges and inform them of the excellent work they have achieved so far and how they wish to take the project forward including the work they have with their website and Facebook. Their aims have been to raise awareness of the impact on children and young people of domestic abuse. They have been very creative in how they have raised funds and have recently received some funding of £5,000 to create some packages for schools in the A Bike for Christmas! Nottinghamshire area. Whatever the outcome at the Look no further call Sam for all your new ceremony on the 9th this is a tremendous achievement and used bikes and shows how anyone participating in Lifestyle can be in also with a chance of the top prize. I wish KADA every success and know that their work continues and will grow from strength to strength. Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, November 2010 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Best Kept Village Competition 2010 Haxey Parish Council Chairman, Cllr John Smedley received the certificate from Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Northern Lincolnshire Chairman, David Rose, for winning the Best Kept War Memorial, which is a separate category within the Best Kept Village Competition. The presentation took place at Worlaby Village Hall on 1st November 2010. The Parish Council wish to express their gratitude to Ann and Peter Kuchnir and Bev Higgins, who provide and tend the plants around the War Memorial throughout the year.
Parish Council Elections 2011 The Parish Council have elections for members every 4 years and the next one will take place in May 2011. There are 15 Haxey Parish Council Councillors who are elected representatives of the community. Currently there are 10 from Westwoodside and 5 from Haxey. Councillors are not paid and receive no income, so all work done is completely voluntary. The Council normally meets on the last Tuesday in each month and there are 12 planned meetings per year with additional meetings called as and when necessary. Parish, town and community councils in England and Wales have a number of basic responsibilities in making the lives of local communities more comfortable, many of which are often taken for granted. Essentially these Powers fall within three main categories: representing the whole electorate within the parish; delivering services to meet local needs; and striving to improve quality of life in the parish. Anyone interested in becoming a Parish Councillor, have to be: • 18 years of age or over on the “relevant date” (i.e. the day on which you are nominated or if there is a poll the day of the election) • on the “relevant day” a local government elector for the council area for which you want to stand - A resident of Haxey Parish, e.g. Graizelound, East Lound, Low Burnham, Haxey & Westwoodside. Or • have during the whole of the 12 months preceding that day occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the council area; or • have during that same period had your principal or only place of work in the council area; or • during that 12 month period resided in the council area. In the case of a sitting member of a parish or community council you can also satisfy the criteria to be elected if you have lived in the council area or within 3 miles of it for the whole of the 12 months preceding the ―relevant day‖. If you would like to serve your local community and make a difference by representing your village on Haxey Parish Council, have a word with any Councillor or the Parish Clerk. Further information will be available prior to the elections on how and when you can apply.

Wroot village hall was originally built around 1960 and over the years has been used to provide the village with varying levels of entertainment and facilities. Over time it has fallen into a state of disrepair its usefulness being reduced, thus restricting the level of facility it is able to offer. 6 years ago fundraising began to raise sufficient funds to build an extension to incorporate a permanent stage and two multi function rooms, electrical re-wiring of the existing hall, a new kitchen, a new fuel efficient boiler and heating system, a pitched roof over the kitchen and toilet area to improve insulation and refurbishment of the toilets to include a new disabled toilet. A group of villagers got together forming Wroot Amateur Players whose talents since then have provided an annual pantomime and several shows in the hall raising a substantial amount of money towards the improvement fund. Some residents have also had fund raising barbecues, parties etc where proceeds have been donated to the fund. About 18 months ago having raised a significant amount of cash, we were able to apply for external grant funding, our first grant being awarded from the Big Lottery Fund ―Awards for All‖ on 2nd June 2010. This was followed on 21st of June by a "match funding" grant from the Northern Lincolnshire (Rural Development Programme for England) Leader Project, which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union, and managed by Yorkshire Forward in this region. Application had also been made to WREN waste recycling who make a difference to peoples lives by awarding grants to community, environmental and heritage projects across the UK. The final decision surrounding the WREN grant was to be made by the Board of Directors on 14th October. The whole project depended on this decision going in our favour so we spent six very twitchy days awaiting the outcome, however on 21st October the much awaited decision arrived telling us that the final grant had been awarded. Work has now commenced on this very worthwhile project igniting excitement and anticipation within the local community. It is only with the goodwill and co-operation of local trades and professional people giving services free in the design, planning, construction and re-furbishment of the hall that this plan can go ahead. Fund raising continues for additional work that needs to be done including improving the doorway and disabled access into the hall and the provision of a disabled ramp within the hall, which comes as a requirement of the building regulations. We are always looking for assistance whether it be in the form of professional trades people to help with the construction and finishing of the building, people just wanting to help with the labouring, re-decoration or just tidying up around the place or the donation of materials and equipment.

Westwoodside Church of England Primary School Our Passport Day
Passport Day is all about the children learning about cultures from around the world. This year 5 and 6 classes learned about New Zealand. First, Mr McKay explained a bit about New Zealand. Then he asked us to draw and paint a mask. He gave us examples to help us along, then he gave us a template of a head to draw on. We had to try to make them as scary as possible. We drew out a design for our head dress. The next day we had to finish painting our masks and, start painting the secondary colours on our head dress. They were meant to be patterned (swirls, lines and zigzags etc.) We went outside to play rugby, but before we started the match we had to perform the haka to the opposition, then they had to perform it to us. It was exhilarating touch rugby! We also sewed straws together to make traditional Maori dress-wear. In addition, we drew a good luck charm, and later on sculpted them.

Westwoodside Church of England School Each term we hold our two Passport Days when our usual timetable is suspended and the children in each group of classes learn about the culture of a specific country or area. This might be a part of the United Kingdom or a foreign country. The photo shows children from our Foundation Stage, wearing red, white and blue from the Union Jack, who were learning about England. This included having a traditional English tea (with scones!), learning about the artist L.S. Lowry and role playing as royalty. This completed the children‘s ‗journey‘ around the U.K. during recent Passport Days. The children in F2 also learnt about Devali as celebrated by Hindu communities in England at this time of year. The picture shows the Year2/3 Reading Champion for the first half of the Autumn Term 2010. In the Year 2/3 class we choose someone who has tried particularly hard with their homework reading to win this award. A special certificate for reading effort is given out every half term.

In Year 4 there is a competition for the children who do the most regular reading aloud to an adult at home. A certificate is awarded to the winner of each of the four groups in the class. A certificate is also won by one overall winner.
On 11 November Mr Marshall attended a meeting of the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society in the Westwoodside Village Hall. The School was presented with a copy of a marvellous resource which shows individual personal histories of the military personnel named on the Haxey War Memorial and the Roll of Honour in St Nicholas‘ Church. The older children in School will have access to this information when studying local History etc. Roger Marshall Headteacher

Haxey Church of England Primary School News Letter This term the school has had a successful Harvest Festival in St. Nicholas Church at which all the year groups took part. Produce was distributed to Nicholas House, Cumberworth Lodge and Burnham Road Day Centre. The generous cash donations we received amounted to £145 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice and was presented to Mrs H. Nicklin (Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Social Worker). We are supporting the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal. The whole school have thoroughly enjoyed participating in Richard Rozel‘s National Road Safety Education Show, a drumming workshop and the sponsored walk that raised money for PHASE Worldwide. The school Advent Service is in St. Nicholas Church on 1st December at 10am. A group of actors will be performing Peter Pan in the school on the morning of 3rd December. On 8th December at 1.15 repeated at 6pm Y3, and Y4, are doing Countdown to Christmas, followed by Y5 and Y6 doing Cinderella. Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Members Slide and Digital Evening Our next meeting will be on Thursday December 2nd, when we have our annual members slide and digital night. This is a night when several of our members entertain us with a variety of photographic presentations on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history topics. In the past we have had talks on Indian railways, walking in the Alps, local moths and interesting holiday destinations to name just a few. What we will have this year is unknown at the moment so anyone who would like to share their images with us please contact Geoff before the meeting so that he can organise the relevant equipment and put the talks in order. You do not have to be an expert photographer or speaker so don‘t be shy, we just like to have a variety of short talks. This is always a popular meeting so do come along and join us. As this is our Christmas meeting the refreshments will include mince pies and there will be a selection of Christmas cards, calendars and diaries for sale. Advance notice for January 6th 2011 Wildlife Wanderings in Europe is the title of the January meeting. Geoff Espin will be taking us on a trip round Europe to see a variety of things, including beautiful flowers and butterflies. Geoff is an outstanding photographer so this is a meeting not to be missed, make a note in your new diaries! We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

The Isle of Axholme
Where You Live
Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE EARLY BAPTISTS IN THE ISLE OF AXHOLME In the 16th and 17th centuries, political and religious unrest and revolt were coupled together. The extreme Parliamentarians were the people with the most extreme views. One particular branch of these people was called Independents. In political terms they advocated local self-government with the King having little power. In religion they wanted to worship in a simple manner independent of the Church of England. The Independent‘s activities were centred around Gainsborough and Scrooby. Many are remembered as the Pilgrim Fathers. An offshoot of the Independents in Epworth was the Baptists. The earliest Baptists appear on the scene at the beginning of the 17th century. There is positive evidence that they existed in 1626. The Church‘s leader in Epworth, according to letters of 1630 found in Amsterdam, was a baker called Johnson. Very few Baptists records were kept of numbers or meetings because in those days there was little religious tolerance. People who rejected the Church of England for other non-Conformist religions did so on peril of a fine, prison, torture, deportment or death. Until 1612 they were liable to be burnt at the stake. The Baptists met in each other‘s houses or in woods or lofts in times of danger. Even in 1663 after the religious political motivated Civil War, the Conventicle Act forbade meetings of more than five people in private houses ―for any exercise of religion in any other manner than is the practice of the Church of England‖. Stiff penalties were imposed - £5.00 or three months jail for the first offence, £10.00 or six months jail for the second offence and deportation to America for the third offence. It was not 1689 with the Toleration Act that religious conscience was officially free. The Baptists‘ church register for 1673 gave a total membership for the Isle of 126 centred mainly on Epworth, Crowle and Butterwick. The Baptist belief of total immersion was appropriately suited to the ―den of waters‖ in the Isle. The River Torne was famous for its dippings. There was also an old farmhouse called ‗Dippings House Farm‖ near which many of the dippings took place. The Baptist Church in the Isle having weathered many early difficulties has survived and is thriving today. Wroot Travis School Newsletter Daisy and George having fun with foam, if you clap your hands together it lands on everyone, including teacher.
These are the latest members of our school community. They were given to us by Reverend David Leese. We haven‘t named them yet but we are working on that. We are also having a nice large run made for them so they can get out without any danger of getting lost. The plastic dishes didn‘t work very well so we now have some nice new feeders that won‘t tip over.
The children have been learning all about the sacrifices made by brave servicemen and women and we decided to have our own Remembrance Day service on Thursday 11th November. In true British spirit we went ahead despite the weather (which wasn‘t as bad as expected). It was a lovely service with the Last Post and Reveille played by our Peri music teacher Mark Sidwell. The children read what information we had on the names on the memorial and some very moving poems. We finished with the Lord‘s prayer and the National Anthem. ______________________________________________________________________________
On Saturday at the Haxey Memorial Hall the Isle of Axholme Lions held a very enjoyable and successful charity Dinner. Over 100 attended and were entertained by Malcolm Lord who acted as Master of Ceremonies and the comedian from up north as he states Joshua. Both were highly amusing and kept us in almost continual laughter throughout the evening. As the point of the evening was to have fun and raise funds it was very fitting that at the start of dinner we had a surprise visit from the Crowle Lives group. P President Chris Booth had the honour of presenting them with a cheque for a new defibrillator which was much needed. This set the tone for the evening and everyone gave generously to our auction of golf equipment signed by many well known golfers kindly donated by Mr & Mrs Dean of Crowle.

The evening raised in excess of ÂŁ1200 for our funds the majority of which goes back in to our community in different ways. Anyone wishing to know more about the Lions or who knows of someone requiring assistance please contact Terry Condliff on 01427 753642. Our next fund raiser is a favourite that you all enjoy every year and that is Father Christmas on his sleigh who will travel the Isle throughout December.

A practical evening at Axholme Camera Club was followed shortly after by a competition. Macro and Close-up Photography was the subject of both evenings, so members had the opportunity to put into practise what they had learnt. The colour section was won by Andrew Kershaw, who also got 3rd place in the monochrome section, Ted Sabin achieved 2nd place in both sections, along with Frank Gray, who was joint 2nd and joint 3rd with Jan Neale in colour. Judy Newton was outright winner of the monochrome. Paul Hobson, ex- Sheffield schoolteacher turned Photographer, went along to show some of his work. During a high paced evening, the members and visitors saw a variety of images digitally projected, many of which Paul has taken recently. He explained his techniques as well as entertaining with some humorous anecdotes. More practical sessions are on the calendar, as well as competitions and speakers. Peter Baker LRPS DPAGB will visit to present 'A Walk on the Wild Side through the eyes of a Fox' on November 9th. Everyone is welcome to attend what promises to be an interesting evening, also December 1st, to see Erica Oram's presentation on the 'Urban Landscape'. Both evenings begin at 7.30pm in Haxey Church Hall, £1.50 admission to include refreshments.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Beyond the Standard Driving Test Seasons greeting to you all., A good gear change is so smooth that your passengers won‘t even notice it has taken place. To achieve this smoothness, you must select a gear that matches the engine speed and road speed, and you must use the accelerator and clutch skilfully. Your goal is to drive as smoothly as possible all times. Drivers often get a false perception of how smooth their driving is, because they have the steering wheel for support. Ask your passengers for an assessment of your driving smoothness, or watch them in your peripheral vision. If they are rocking around as you negotiate a roundabout or corner, your technique isn‘t smooth enough and needs more work. When changing up a gear, release the accelerator and depress the clutch simultaneously, and only press the accelerator again as your foot is releasing the clutch. Expert timing will produce silky-smooth changes every time. When changing down a gear, you‘ll increase smoothness by matching the engine speed to the road speed with a brief blip of the accelerator. Good gear changes re also good for your car (and wallet). They keep your clutch and gearbox in excellent, condition for longer and save petrol. Poor gear changes and ―riding the clutch‖ causes expensive premature wear. Block changing-changing gear from say, third to fifth or fifth to second in one movement is an important part of Advanced Driving. Advanced Drivers make excellent progress by applying firm acceleration whenever it is safe and applicable. This could often mean reaching a 60mph speed limit in, say, third gear after an overtake manoeuvre. What is the point in changing from third to fourth and fourth to fifth just to maintain the same speed? This is an opportunity to minimise your driving inputs (and your fuel consumption) by changing straight from third into top gear missing out fourth gear. Like wise on approaching a roundabout or junction, slow your speed, by using your acceleration sense or brakes, and then select the gear for your exit. This may well mean changing straight from fifth to second. You should always aim to make gear changes after braking and before you turn the steering wheel. £110 This produces a smooth, safe, progressive and economical drive, which your passengers will really appreciate. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Have a Merry Xmas and a very happy new year. Safe Driving Paul Tuke. Senior Training Observer. Doncaster Advanced Motorists.

Fancy a Challenge? South Axholme Offers It‌.. South Axholme School takes part in The Duke of Edinburgh award. This is a scheme that involves volunteering in the local community, participating in a physical activity, being able to perform a certain skill and to round off the whole experience participants take part in an expedition. When all of these factors have been accomplished it is possible to say that participants are left with a tremendous sense of well being and achievement. Some of the reasons pupils from the school, including ourselves, have chosen to do this is because the award stands you in good stead for university applications and your CV. Also it can be a personal challenge and adventure (especially on the expedition!). As well as the award benefiting the pupils it gives back to the community. Many life skills are learnt and experienced through the DofE, for example team work and decision making. With funding made possible from the PTA for equipment and resources 20 students have been able to take part in the scheme and with a growing demand for places on the DofE scheme greater funding would be necessary to enable more students to take part.
