The Trentside Federation Schools’ News – West Butterwick and St Martin’s C of E Primary Schools Recently, both schools in our Federation focused their minds on the significance of 11th November and the various events that took place in our schools, the local community, nationally and within the wider world. Discussions were based around Remembrance Day, WW1 Centenary, Armistice and the Poppy Appeal. On 14th November we held our annual St Martin’s Service of Remembrance/Patronal Service in church, reflecting on the sacrifices and contributions made by a range of members in our society over the years, such as service men/women, St Martin himself, Canon Ravins and the Stonehouse and Sanders Apprenticeship Charity set up over 100 years ago. In the week preceding this, all our pupils enjoyed a visit from three local musicians who came to share aspects of ‘the history of music’ with us, with a particular focus on the period in time of ‘The Mowbrays’ who were once ‘Lords of the Manor of Epworth and Westwood’. A range of ‘early instruments and period music’ was covered 1100 - 1400. This included some dancing too! On Thursday 6th November, 31 children from St Martin's attended an indoor athletics festival in Scunthorpe. We competed against three other schools and gained 198 points overall, resulting in third place. The track events included individual running and relay races and the field events included triple jump; speed bounce; chest push and soft javelin. Yasmine Cross, Abbie Garner, Ffion Francis and Abigail Platt achieved 1st place in a number of events. The obstacle relay with Abbie, Abigail, Sammy and Hannah T was a close finish and an exciting race to watch. Unfortunately, the winning positions were just out of reach for the boys but they gave all the events a good try. It was an exciting afternoon of sport and St Martin's competed fully in all of the events adopting an infectious sporting attitude that will take them forward to future sporting competitions. Over this last half-term of 2014, we have a dramatic production of ‘Alladin’ in the pipeline, Children in Need fundraisers planned, as well as National Anti-Bullying Week activities. The aims of Anti-Bullying Week include promoting greater awareness that discriminatory language is wrong whilst also becoming more aware of groups of young people who may be particularly vulnerable to bullying. Through anti-bullying education we can achieve more ‘inclusive attitudes’ in society. Jo Buckle, Headteacher

In December (and most of November too) we are surrounded by signs and symbols urging us to spend our money and have a good time. It is sometimes said that fewer people today know what we celebrate a week before the end of December. We say in the churches, “Christmas begins with Christ” for among the many images of this season we still see the couple with the donkey trudging through the night and the family in the stable surrounded by the familiar cast of men and beasts. This is what Christmas really is; our faith tells us that God came into our world because of his great love for us; It seems incredible to us today that God should have chosen that particular time and place not to demonstrate his great power but to creep into the world beside us. That is the way of God who is constantly surprising us; after all who would have thought that a world wide religious movement could have its roots in a place like Epworth?

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by
Anthony E. Catherall
Date of Birth. 11 January 1908. Date of Enlistment 16 January 1941
*Forward by Daughter Julie Spencer *I spent over two years typing up my father’s original diaries. *Born on 11 Jan 2008 my father Clifford Henry Spencer was one of six children, three brothers and two sisters. Father and Mother had a farm. *Dad, had a happy childhood and later as a young man, enjoyed football, cricket and tennis. *There was no television in those days, they made their own pleasures. My mother was two years older than Dad, born on 4 July 1906, was one of the crowds of friends who he mixed with and they often played doubles at tennis. *My Father was in love with my Mother before she was with him, she was quite happy just being friends and she also came from a farming family. *She also had siblings, having two brothers and two sisters. They all mixed and played together along with various cousins and friends. *Eventually they got engaged and married on 31 August 1935, I came along one year later 27 August 1936. *Dad wasn’t interested in farming so went to Baines & Son in Goole to learn a trade as a Painter & Decorator. Together they bought a small house in Goole and lived happily until Dad was called up. Subsequently, Mother and me, went to live with my Grandparents in a tiny village near Haxey Lincolnshire, called Graizelound. *I was five when Dad went abroad and nine when he came home for good. I was too young to remember missing my Father, but according to my Mothers letters, I talked about him every day, especially at bed times when I said my prayers and every Christmas I would ask for my Daddy to come home.. *But, I had my mum and grandparents and was surrounded by loving Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. I had a wonderful childhood and never knew there was a war on really. *This is not only a war diary, but also, a love story between my Mother and father, that continued until Dad’s death on 12 May1966 aged 58. *Forward by Anthony Catherall *Like Julie, I have spent many happy hours reading this poignant and moving personal account of her father Clifford. His love for his wife Mary and Julie is most abundant throughout his diary entries, together with the hundreds of letters that he wrote home during his service in North Africa and later as a POW in Italy. I believe it was that abiding love that kept him going. The letters show spirit throughout his three years abroad, and as Julie says, yes, it is a love story as well as a war diary. *Clifford, like many gallant soldiers who served for us during both WW1 & WW2, restricted their comments in writing, both then and when they came home, about the ‘hell’ they went through ‘off the record’, some keeping it from their loved ones for all time, much credit must go to these soldiers for this restraint. Clifford records here succinctly at times, by just listing his accounts. Nevertheless by his diligence, he has preserved his exploits, a most worthy and valuable tale for his immediate family and other readers. *Clifford had an inborn talent in several ways, one of which was to draw caricatures of his sporting heroes, in his case on any old lined paper he could get his hands on and hide. I have added some of these along with many relevant photographs, documents and other paperwork provided by Julie to give body to his diary. Also in bold text, I have occasionally added comments that in this modern age we have been able to discover and sometimes slightly corrected, amended, or explained, dates, names, times, facts or spellings that may at the time and because of the pressure he was under alluded Clifford. Tosureadvertise please call 01302 532676 07912 643010 *Like me I’m you will find his sometimes graphic account,or both interesting, enlightening, funny,33 charming and loving story, a joy to read. This lovely boy is Alfie, an 8 month old Jack Russell Cross. Alfie is a very happy, playful boy, who loves fuss and attention, and loves to play. He is still very much a puppy, and will need some training, although the basics are there. He is ok with kids and other dogs, but not cats. We are looking for an active family for Alfie, as he loves his walks and has lots of energy. Alfie will be fully vaccinated and neutered prior to adoption. If you are interested in meeting this lovely boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705

As this article is being written, the phone line at Isle Rescue is very busy. Every day we take calls from people begging us to take in their dogs and cats and find new homes for them. This happens throughout the year, but the few weeks running up to and including the Christmas period are by far the worst. Some people obviously decide that they want a cute puppy or kitten for Christmas, and the loyal pet they have had for many years must go to make room. Then a few weeks later, they realise that the cute puppy has grown, needs a lot of attention and training, makes a mess and barks, so sadly it has to go as well. Of course there are genuine reasons why someone may have to give up their beloved pet, and it is heartbreaking. But there are many who are happy to dump their pets out in the street, leave them behind in the garden when they move house, or give them away “Free to a Good Home on the selling sites, without a second thought as to where they will end up. And yes, without going into the scary details, many of these do end up in the wrong hands. Rescues such as ourselves help as many as we can, but it is a drop in the ocean. There are thousands of dogs in Rescues and Council Pounds throughout the country- many of whom will never be re-homed. A large percentage of these were once family pets. Please be careful what you wish for this Christmas. Pets really are a big commitment, so make sure you are willing- and able- to give them the lovely, lifetime home they all deserve.

Change your driving habits with the change of season Dear Readers, As autumn brings a change in the colour of leaves, motorists also need to be aware of the hazards brought about by changing road conditions.. Fallen leaves tend to accumulate near roadside gutters and, when combined with heavier seasonal rainfall, can block roadside drains causing localised deep water and wet leaves on the road surface increase the danger of skidding for drivers and motorcyclists. Darker mornings and early evenings also mean that it is harder to spot surface water. If the road surface is black, pockets of water are less easy to see and can cause a sharp, unexpected jolt on the steering wheel when hit. The sun is also lower in the sky at sunrise and sunset at this time of year and motorists should be aware this can have a dangerous blinding effect, particularly around the time motorists are commuting to and from work. The colder temperatures of autumn can also to give rise to fog. Fog is a particular problem on fast-moving roads, such as motorways but severely reduced visibility brings danger for drivers on all roads – particularly junctions and roundabouts. Use fog lights sparingly; switch them on only when visibility is below 100 metres. Leaving them on after fog has disappeared is an offence and a danger to other motorists. Fog can also cause moisture on the windscreen; use wipers to clear the exterior and keep the interior clean to help maintain visibility. Motorists should set lighting and windscreen controls in their vehicle before setting off to avoid distraction while travelling. Sharp braking can also be even more dangerous when visibility is poor. Motorists should be prepared to slow down to enable them to stop within the distance they can see to be clear and give following drivers more time react. Safe Driving Paul Tuke.
