Community News

The Open Meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club attracted a lot of ladies to the Memorial Hall in Haxey. The title of the demonstration was “Party Time” and this year two ladies worked in partnership to create 11 arrangements. The ladies were Christine Hinchcliff and Susie Marsh from Headingly, Leeds. They created similar but maybe mirror images of each other’s work. They talked of Hog Roast garden parties, Autumn parties, breakfast parties, student parties, dinner parties and drinks parties. They demonstrated arrangements for entrances, halls, coffee tables, dinner tables and “just anywhere”. As we have become accustomed to, they helped the audience learn some new techniques and skills and introduced various colours and designs and shapes which we may not have previously thought to put together. Flowers used were purple calla lilies, iris, pampas grass, gerbera, roses, chrysanthemums, carnations anthurium and orchids. The various colours used were dependant on the arrangement and some had silver or gold baubles and bling to give an extra sparkle. Finally the stage looked very impressive with the arrangements displayed. The demonstration was preceded by party nibbles and a delicious punch and the evening concluded with Ann Everatt giving a vote of thanks. In addition to the arrangements created by the

demonstrators there were very attractive table decorations made by Club members which were also raffled. Members were reminded of the club’s next meeting on Monday, December 14th at 7.30 in the Stephen Jones Community Hall. It will be a party evening…a little party food to be brought individually …. and a short workshop (£5). The January Meal is yet to be arranged but will be on Wednesday 11th January 2016. Details available soon.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

Never mind love there’s more to come please God. Remember dear, how it thundered and lightened that night. Instead of your company in bed tonight I shall have bugs and fleas. Sunday go to 8.45 am service. Do you remember dear that Sunday we went to hear Rev. Saunters, also had chicken for dinner. Today I think it was donkey! I had coffee in bed this morning Today is our wedding anniversary I’ve not been able to spend it with you dear, Mon 31st. but my thoughts have been more than ever (if possible) with you this weekend. I have been lucky today. First it’s been parcel day, so I’m going to celebrate, I’ve saved a little bread up (which takes some doing).I have also won 40 cigs in a raffle, it’s like this, there are 50 cigs to a parcel, but sometimes a tin of tobacco instead, whoever gets it, raffles it for a cig a time, I won the tin and exchange it to Len for 40 cigs. Wash my KD shorts but it’s a job in cold weather. Walk round the camp three times then go to bed, thinking of you dear and seven years ago. I will go through this week’s meal. Starting on: Monday 7.30am Half a pint coffee. 10.30am quarter of a loaf and small ration of cheese. 4 pm. macaroni or rice, and greens, mostly the tops, one and three quarters of a pint of that, half of it water. Tuesday Pay 11 lire, 7am half a pint of coffee, 10am bread and cheese, 11.30am three small tomatoes 4am macaroni, hot water is supplied each day, for brewing, which is either tea or cocoa, out of parcels. Soap issue, issue us with a towel or a piece of rag, debate, is the old fashioned nightgown, better than pyjamas. Buy four peaches out of (from) the canteen they are the size of a vic (Victoria) plum, but good. Wednesday Meals same as Tuesday. Two roll calls per day, just a count up. Not a long job, but sometimes there is a name by name roll call, and that’s a long do, four to six hours. Have good wash and debug, it is a game keeping me awake at night. Send you a letter and card darling. Some more of the lads get mail from England. Good boxing show tonight. The song about flies in Italy sure is true there are thousands of them, and it’s a job keeping them off what bit of food we have. Sept 3rd. Lovely day, one hardly needs any clothes on. Three years ago today, another day I remember, listening to Mr Chamberlain’s speech, declaring war on Germany. Coffee 7am. Bread and meat salad instead of cheese 10.30am. Also at 11am we get an issue of melons, they are Moorish. 4am macaroni. Go to service. Sept 4th. POW news tells us of how disastrous it is for the British. Meals same as Tuesday could eat the same three times over. Debate, is the woman’s place at home or in the business world. Answer (at home) Write a few hymns out, have a tin mug made. Sept 5th. Meals same as Tues. I make a set of dominoes out of matchboxes. Have a good wash Sunday 6th. Go to service 8.45am. More mail but none for me yet. Evening service 7pm. Coffee 7am. Meat and melons 11am, rice 4am. CHECK Sept 7th.Our section doing fatigues, so get the back issue parcels. Have a go at drawing the view outside the camp, which are all hills and mountains. At the time of writing Mount Vesuvius, which is a noted mountain, is smoking, the town of Capua is on the west side of us, with mountains as 18 ground. News from Haxey Church of England Primary School As we thunder towards the end of the year, the children have been enjoying lots of festivities within school. Our annual Advent service up at St Nicholas Church kicked off the spirit of Christmas with an excellent address from Rev. Green. They have designed their own Christmas cards, and are eagerly awaiting their annual 'Santa's Grotto' and a visit from a certain someone dressed head to toe in red! Christmas dinner at school is always a highlight of the month, thank you to kitchen staff for such a lovely seasonal feast. The annual Christmas performances are always a hit with children and parents alike. The staff and children have put a great deal of effort into their performance so well done to all of the children and thanks for parents for their support. The last textile collection was a record breaker and raised a staggering £124.50! This all came from unwanted items donated by parents and carers. New dates for collection will be given out in the new year so let's see if we can break this record again. Thanks to all who took their time to drop their bags off at school. These funds are vital to the children's learning journey, and every penny does count. The usual winter Fayre was another success, with a games room, festive refreshments, gifts and entertainment. Praise to all who attended and supported the school, and those who donated items for the successful running of the usual stalls. In y4 we have been learning about North America. As part of our learning, we spent the morning cooking foods traditionally eaten in the USA, (burgers, pancakes, muffins, wedges, chicken, hot dogs) and we had this for our lunch. Everybody shared the food that had been cooked, and we had a feast! Our year 5 and 6 children recently visited South Axholme school for inter school athletics with 5 other local schools. Overall, the children came 1st! Congratulations for this amazing achievement, which was down to good old fashioned team work. Members of the school council attended at Haxey Memorial on Wednesday 11th November, to represent the rest of the school as part of the remembrance service. They behaved admirably, and took a moment to remember those who gave their lives so bravely for us. On a final note, we would like to say an enormous 'thank you' to all staff, teachers and especially the children at school who have worked very hard over the last year. Enjoy your well earned school holidays!

We wish you all a Happy Christmas and very best wishes for the new year ahead. 36

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) In Class 2 at West Butterwick, the Junior pupils been learning about our 'Wonderful World'. They very much enjoyed an educational visit to Magna - a Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham. This visit provided the children with an opportunity to explore four pavilions focusing on air, earth, fire and water. There were over one hundred interactive exhibits to engage with and learning was very much facilitated through investigation and play. Within an educational workshop, the pupils found out about how volcanoes were formed and even made one themselves. Pupils learned about the different types of rocks that make up our world and took part in a quiz. Lots and lots of new knowledge and skills was gained with a lot of fun along the way! Everyone was particularly impressed by the fire tornado! The youngest pupils at St Martin’s are to also take part in a very exciting educational visit this term. They will travel to Robin Hood Airport for the ‘Vulcan Experience and Terminal’ to see various aircraft and take part in activities. You may have seen the Vulcan Bomber making its last flight over Lincolnshire last month, as the fly-pasts were watched by hundreds of thousands of people. The former RAF bomber ended service in 1993, but was restored by a charity trust of enthusiasts, taking to the air again in 2007. However, the advancing age of its air frame and engines led to experts deciding that 2015 had to be its last flying year This ‘ Vulcan Bomber’ visit was prompted by the interests of the children who have been asking about aeroplanes and the history of war-time. Our youngest pupils also enjoy role-play (especially ‘Be the Teacher’ in Maths !!) and the boys have been developing their writing within the outside environment. West Butterwick Foundation Stage pupils have been developing their maths skills with ‘water play and exploration’ outside, as well as learning about ‘Jobs People Do’- this has led to a greater awareness of the variety of work-places that exist in the countryside, villages, town and cities. The children have even designed a new village, making use of their geographical skills and knowledge. Sporting activities continue to feature strongly on the curriculum – Our Years 5 & 6 pupils visited South Axholme school for an Athletics event on Friday 6th November. On November 13th St Martin’s School held its Patronal Service in St Martin’s church. A number of pupils in Class 4 re-told the story of St Martin giving his cloak to a beggar and we all thought about how the values held dear to St Martin also feature in our lives and within the school community. We are looking forward to the final few weeks of this Autumn Term. This has to be one of the busiest periods of the academic year! You will see the children’s wonderful decorations at the Methodist Chapel’s Christmas Tree Festival, St Martin’s School Choir will sing at Lindum Court and a number of pupils will take part in the ‘Lights Switch On and Nativity Tableaux’ in Owston Ferry. On behalf of everyone at St “The Martin’sArrow” and West when Butterwick, I wish you to a very happy Christmas and a 38 Please mention responding advertisements peaceful New Year.

As this article is being written, the phone line at Isle Rescue is very busy. Every day we take calls from people begging us to take in their dogs and cats and find new homes for them. This happens throughout the year, but the few weeks running up to and including the Christmas period are by far the worst. Some people obviously decide that they want a cute puppy or kitten for Christmas, and the loyal pet they have had for many years must go to make room. Then a few weeks later, they realise that the cute puppy has grown, needs a lot of attention and training, makes a mess and barks, so sadly it has to go as well. Of course there are genuine reasons why someone may have to give up their beloved pet, and it is heartbreaking. But there are many who are happy to dump their pets out in the street, leave them behind in the garden when they move house, or give them away “Free to a Good Home” on the selling sites, without a second thought as to where they will end up. And yes, without going into the scary details, many of these do end up in the wrong hands. Rescues such as ourselves help as many as we can, but it is a drop in the ocean. There are thousands of dogs in Rescues and Council Pounds throughout the country- many of whom will never be re-homed. A large percentage of these were once family pets. Please be careful what you wish for this Christmas. Pets really are a big commitment, so make sure you are willing- and able- to give them the lovely, lifetime home they all deserve.

“This beautiful girl is Lily, a six year old Neapolitan Mastiff Cross who is looking for her new home. Lily is just a big softie – so friendly and affectionate, and loves her belly-rubs! Lily is a big girl, so experience of large-breed dogs is preferred. She is not great with other dogs or cats, so would be best as an only pet. Older children only because of her size. Lily is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting this gorgeous girl, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.”

NEWS FROM MISTERTON ‘REMEMBRANCE’ TREE AT CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH-ON There will be a special Christmas tree among those on display at the Parish Council’s annual lights switchon. By buying a star to hang on the tree with a message, the ‘Remembrance’ tree will be a chance to think about those no longer with us for the festive season. Lighting up the village for Christmas is on Friday 4 December from 6.00pm on Windmill Garden. This is followed by refreshments and the display of Christmas trees in the Parish Church, with musical accompaniment. Businesses, organisations, and residents are invited to dress a Christmas tree in time for the occasion – there’s a £5 fee but the best-dressed tree will win a prize. For all the details, contact The Misterton Centre (tel: 891872).
