SUNDAY NOVEMBER 11TH 2018 The people of Haxey Parish responded well to the events organised for this 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Poppies were displayed around the village together with metal soldier outlines at Chapel Church and on Doncaster Road and at Graizelound Crossroads. Many thanks to Steve Jones for these. The gathering at the Soldier Memorial at 10. 45 a.m. attracted a crowd of an estimated 200. The short service was led by Methodist Minister Angy Long and Mike Parkin called the wreath bearers to attention. Samantha Cook, our trumpeter for a few years now, heralded the two minutes silence and followed it with Reveille. 8 wreaths were laid by representatives of various organisations and a few personal crosses laid. A good number of people attended the Service at the Methodist Chapel at which Angy had the congregation contributing to the meaning of REMEMBERING. One of the youngest came up with the suggestion that we learn from our remembering. Refreshments were served in the Hall afterwards. We were thankful for a dry and fairly mild evening as we gathered at St Nicholas Church for the evening Service of Remembrance. The scout groups had attended in the morning but probably every member of the scouting groups attended at 5.30.p.m. It had been thought that the younger girls and boys might have opted out but it was probably an exciting time for them. It was estimated the 150 children attended together with 200 adults. The church was certainly packed and the atmosphere one of quiet and attention as Paul Taylor led our thought through 3 Rs - Remembering, Rejoicing and Re-dedicating. The service was led by Helen Cooper, the lesson read by Laura Jenman and the prayers given by Nick Haines, who, of course, also gave us the full strength of the organ in the well known hymns. The roll of honour of those from the parish who died in the First and Second World Wars was read by Basil Dunford who was joined by Esme Craven in the saying of The Ode. Wreaths were laid and crosses planted at the Memorial in the Churchyard and a little while later the long procession walked to the Beacon at the top of Tower Hill where a Tribute to the Fallen was read by Air Cadet Dan Jewson, The Last Post was played followed by the 2 minutes silence and Reveille; the beacon burst into a magnificent flame and soon the bells were ringing.
Thank you to Haxey Parish Council for its part in organising and well done to everyone who organised and took part on the day. A day to remember for us all and particularly for those who will be living in decades to come.

YOUNG CITIZENS OF THE YEAR TO SWITCH ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS The Parish Council’s Christmas lights switch-on is on Friday 7 December at 6.00pm on Church Meadow. The Parish Council’s Junior Citizens of the Year, last year’s Year 6 at Misterton Primary, will do the honours. Year 6 won under-18s award for their work with North Notts Lions to produce a promotional video about the Lions programme to restore sight to visually-impaired people across the globe. All of former Year 6 are invited to come along and help with the switch-on. If it is wet, some activities may be moved into the Parish Church. Santa will be paying his customary visit (pictured last year). Hatfield Brass Band will play seasonal music, and mulled wine and soft drinks for children will be provided by the Parish Council. Other refreshments will be available as well as a range of stalls. There’s still space for more stalls: anyone wanting one should contact Nikki on (01427) 891629. There’s no charge but a donation to the Parish Council’s nominated charities for the evening, Macmillan Cancer Care and the Parish Church, are welcome. This year, there’s a Christmas/Winter Art/Craft exhibition in the Parish Church starting on Friday evening. Anyone can exhibit – just bring items along from 2.00pm during the afternoon of 7 December. Everyone - individuals, organisations, and businesses - is invited to enter with any medium: painting, drawing, photography, embroidery, card-making, Christmas decorations, cake making and decorating, Christmas wreaths, pyrography, model-making, jewellery – you name it, it’s welcome! Although there’s no Christmas Tree Festival, if you want to bring a tree, you can! Please attach a card with your name and contact details somewhere on your exhibit.
The exhibition will be in the Parish Church from the evening of Friday 7 December for the weekend. There is no entry fee but there will be a prize for the best exhibit by a child under 16, and a prize for an entry by someone over 16. There’s also the opportunity for crafters and businesses to have a stall – on Church Meadow during the lights switch-on then in the Parish Church on Saturday and Sunday (Saturday 8 December from 10.00am to 4.00pm and Sunday 9 December from 12 noon to 4.00pm). All we ask for is a donation to the Parish Council’s charities that will benefit from this event. The Parish Council extends an invitation to the Christmas lights switch-on
to all residents.
The Parish Church is holding a Christmas coffee morning on Saturday 8 December from 10.00am to 12 noon. All are welcome – and it’s another opportunity to see the exhibition. Entry is free (£1.50 for tea/coffee and a mince pie).

News From Haxey Church of England Primary School School is buzzing with activity as usual, as we start our last half term before Christmas. Our FS2 and Key Stage 1 children are busy rehearsing for their festive performance. This year it will be 'Christmas Around the World'. Our older children will put on their performances at Easter and at the end of the school year. This gives all children the chance to play a part in their year group's performance, and also assists us in allowing more parents and carers the chance to see their child perform as we can fit them into our school hall at staggered times! We have seen some 'sporty' improvements to our playground recently. We have had the 'linesmen' in re-painting the lines that had worn away and were difficult to see. Our playground now has a painted 'running' track in different colours, and also a trail whereby children can follow a line onto certain activity squares to complete lunges etc. The lines also feature more colour and have certainly brightened up the playground. Our children love them, and it helps them keep fit and motivated and encourages children to work together and challenge each other in a friendly way. Continuing on our sporty theme, our year 6 children recently competed in a cluster school sports event on 12.11.18 at South Axholme Academy. Children participated in a number of races. As this is being typed it is unknown how they did, watch out for results in our next news! The children enjoyed themselves, and events at senior school whilst still at primary does help them transition ready for their new school journey in September next year. Our children in years 5 and 6 have recently participated in the ROAR 2018 challenge competition. The children worked in small groups to come up with a life changing idea that they thought would change the worlds and make it a better place. They only had a few sessions in which to complete this idea, create a model, a jingle, a slogan and a poster for their presentation. We were extremely lucky to have The Axholme Lions fund this project, who also helped judge the competition along with one of our governors Dr David Egner, and also BBC The Apprentice series 12 runner up Fran Bishop. All of the groups worked extremely hard and thoroughly enjoyed taking part. Unfortunately, the judges could only put one group forward to the final in Nottingham, and that was 'Dash and Donate', with their idea of 'Power Shoes'. They are very excited to be representing our school in December, watch this space to see how they get on!! Sunday 11th November 2018 saw 100 years since the end of The Great War. Representatives of our school council attended at the War Memorial in the Village and laid a wreath in honour of the fallen from the world wars, especially from Haxey and neighbouring villages. The Wonderful Years Photography were on hand to capture the moment Oliver Thorpe from year 6 laid our wreath. May we gently remind carers and parents to discuss road safety with their children as the nights are getting darker? It may also be the ideal opportunity to have a quick chat about online safety, as children may use the internet more with the lack of opportunity for playing outside as the weather turns? There are lots of interesting videos to watch on the CEOP and NSPCC websites. We do cover these topics in school but it is also important it is discussed 24 Please mention “The Arrow when within the home.
