Welcome to the December issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow! Christmas is just round the corner!, Whilst most of us are looking forward to festive activities during December, we must give a thought to the victims of the floods last month. The rain and the flooding of villages surrounding Doncaster saw yet again the nightmare of a repeat of 2007. Whilst river levels are rising with the continuous rain be vigilant for flooding in your areas. On page 2 there are some details of how you can help the residents. On a brighter side, lots going on this December all locally in your area. There’s the Christmas light switch on in Epworth on Friday 29th November, followed by Carols around the tree in the Market place, Epworth on the 24th December at 6pm. Don't forget the amazing Brigley house Christmas lights in Crowle. Great show and all monies going to charity. Details are on page 19. You still have chance to support the Victorian Old Smithy in Owston Ferry. There is an exhibition of agricultural tools in a courtyard setting and Village Museum on the first floor. Santa is making his annual visit on weekends running up to Christmas. Enjoy the read, keep safe and please note the deadline for the January issue is earlier than usual, Friday 6th December for distribution by 2nd January. If you are interested in advertising or simply emailing me some community news, please be in touch before the date. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas from the Arrow team!

House/shed/garage burglaries have featured over the last month as the dark nights have set in. Whilst we do not want to concern residents, we would like to remind everyone of some basic home security measures which can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a vic m of burglary. The most likely entry point for a burglar is via the rear so do not neglect security there. Fit an alarm or a dummy alarm box. Many people point out that when an alarm sounds nobody takes any no ce these days. The burglar will though. Install a security light which works on a movement sensor to light up areas which a burglar may use for cover. Use mer switches to turn lights on when you are not in. Ensure any gates at the rear are locked, not just with a bolt near the top which can be opened by reaching over. Thieves do not want to be seen and surveillance is o en provided by neighbours who live opposite or who overlook your property. Do not allow bushes and hedges to grow too high. Consider the security on your shed. Is it propor onate to the value of items you keep inside such as cycles and garden equipment? e.g. an expensive cycle stored in a wooden shed with only a £2.50 padlock for security. It is also worth no ng that a burglar will some mes use an item which is easily taken from a poorly secured shed to facilitate their entry into a house. Fit trellis along the top of fencing at the rear as this will break if a burglar tries to climb over your fence. Spiky / prickly bushes and climbers are also a deterrent. Report all suspicious circumstances. Door‐to‐door salesman appertaining to be selling energy or double‐glazing are o en checking out and planning future burglaries or even trying their luck there and then if they get no reply to knocking. In rural communi es, local residents know when someone or something looks out of place far more than in urban areas. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch Group or start one up yourself. The role of co‐ordinator does not have to be a burdensome role and your group can be as small or large as you wish. In effect the key role of a NHW co‐ordinator is to act as a conduit for police informa on which in today’s world is literally the touch of a bu on. The vital part is that police have that single point of contact in as many areas as possible. NHW is proven to reduce and prevent crime and it is an ini a ve well suited to rural communi es where tradi onal community spirit s ll exists. We would also ask for your assistance in keeping an eye on any proper es where you know the occupants are away or out for whatever length of me. Our intelligence suggests that the offenders are ‘doing their homework’ in iden fying proper es from which to steal. If you see any suspicious ac vity then please call 999 if you believe a crime is about to be commi ed or 101 if you noted suspicious ac vity which has now passed. If you are able to get descrip ons of persons or vehicle details without pu ng yourself in any danger, then that would be valuable informa on. Check out our dedicated neighbourhood policing pages for information using this link: www.humberside.police.uk/all-policing-teams

Here at Haxey we have had a visit from a young author, Amelie Pape, who has recently had her book, “Autism, My Brother and Me”, published. Her visit inspired one of our school councillors to write the following article. Today we had a visit from 13-year-old Amelie who has written a book about her little brother Harry who has autism and how people are affected by it. She has shown people how autism can affect people with learning and focus in listening and understanding. Amelie wrote this book when she was only 9 years old and now she is the third youngest author in the world. She got her inspiration from children’s author Jacqueline Wilson and she one day hopes to live up to the same career as her idol. The school councillors from each year group gathered in the nurture room where renowned author Amelie was sitting with her mum and the book autism my brother and me. Amelie told us a bit about her book and why it helped Harry with his autism and how it made Amelie understand more about his condition and how she could try and help him as well as the other people in the world that have the same condition as Harry does. The school council and the five other people from year 5 asked Amelie some questions about how she amounted to so much and what made her do it. Amelie had brilliant explanations about how an autistic person or child is like a cheesecake you have the crumble first then the cheese she was saying it isn’t how you normally see it but it still tastes delicious. Amelie has achieved so much over the past 4 years from drawing pictures when she was five years old to being a world famous author that made such an amazing difference in the world for not just autistic people but for many people and she will continue to do that. The Isle of Axholme has a new destination for people looking for a relaxed and welcoming midweek
evening out as Hirst Priory launches its new Wednesday Club in The Vaults, the subterranean 300 year old vaulted brick basement that has recently been refurbished. The Wednesday Club will be hosted each week between 7.30pm – 11.00pm. Guests will be served a seasonal selection of locally produced food and each week entertainment will be provided by a different local act for variety. The Vaults has an enticing range of gins and rums served over the bar with quality soft drinks, teas and coffees for people due at work the next day. Hirst Priory Managing Director Hazel Wheatley said, “We want to create a light, relaxed evening out for people to meet up with friends outside of the weekend hustle and enjoy a great evening out in a uniquely atmospheric setting. We are using seasonal local produce in our sharing platters for the best quality and to support our community. Spaces in The Vaults are limited so booking is essential”. Reception class Westwoodside CE Primary
The children in Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes) at Westwoodside Primary Academy had a lovely time visiting the over 60's dominoes club in the village hall. The children sang an action song ‘Oats and Beans and Barley Grow’ to the grown ups, before giving out the harvest bags which we had prepared in school the day before. A lovely time was had by all!
Foundation children all had a super morning completing a sponsored 'Jim, Jam, Jog!' The rain held off enough to run around the playground...some children completed over 8 laps! After eating yummy jam on toast the children then enjoyed our final pre-pedal session. Over the past five weeks the children have gained so much in confidence and skill on their balance bikes.

The Crowle Entertainers are currently rehearsing their 19th annual pantomime at the Crowle Community Hall and this year it will be Camelot the Panto – based on the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, in an original script devised by the cast and directed by Gill Vickers with choreography by Kim Oakley of Streetbeat. Camelot is a magical world with the wizard Merlin and the evil Egregia battling it out to see who will win control over Camelot and the evil Mordred and Morgana trying to take over the throne. There are dragons, princesses, knights in shining armour, beautiful serving maids and a would-be magician whose tricks keep going wrong. There will be lots of audience participation, music, dance and laughter, as we follow the adventures of Arthur and his knights, so come along prepared to join in the fun! Performances will take place on Saturday 11th January at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and on Sunday 12th January at 2.30pm at the Crowle Community Hall. Tickets priced £5 and £4 for concessions are available from the Regen Shop, Crowle or by calling 01724 711212, or 01427 311802 or by texting 07419 319796. Please note that although tickets can be purchased on the door, advance purchase or booking is highly advisable to avoid disappointment.
