Welcome to the December issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow We should be now well under way with preparations for Christmas. At the time of writing, we have no idea how we will celebrate Christmas and whether we can even spend this valuable time with our families and loved ones! In this issue we are really pleased to see the generosity of people in these tough times and hopefully a more ’normal’ December ahead of us! The Isle of Axholme Lions are still planning bringing Santa to the Isle; it might be a bit different this year but I am sure they will do their very best to bring cheer to your streets. They also have an option of a video from Santa, please see pages 24 and 25 for full details and give them your full support! Father Christmas will also be making a visit to Misterton Chippy, full details are on page 27. Its great to see people bringing hope to the community, donating their busy time to helping others. Abbie started a Christmas gift appeal for Doncaster and North Lincolnshire. Started off a small project and escalated into a much bigger scale. Please give her your support, she is especially looking for presents for teenagers and these can be dropped off at Epworth Holmes and Garden, the dedicated drop off point. Full details are on page 18.
Based in the Isle of Axholme
We do hope you have a wonderful Christmas at this uncertain time. Keep safe and enjoy the read The deadline for the January issue is Friday 11th December for delivery by Sunday 3rd January. Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Community News Lindsey Lodge is inviting people across North Lincolnshire to Light up a Life and remember a lost loved one. The service, which is open to anyone who has lost someone, will be held virtually on Friday 4 December and will be live streamed from the Hospice memorial garden. Lindsey Lodge Chief Executive Karen Griffiths said: “Christmas can be a very difficult time for anyone who has lost a loved one, particularly this year, which has been incredibly challenging for everyone. She added: “As we enter the festive season, we are reaching out to our local community and inviting them to join us in our Light up a Life activities. “Our service this year will be held virtually and we are aiming to capture the very special essence of Light up a Life, to give people the opportunity to honour those they have lost in a safe and socially distanced live ceremony in the comfort of their own home.” Lindsey Lodge’s live service will take place via Facebook live on Friday 4 December, where the trees will be lit. Each light represents a life, and will remain lit throughout the Christmas period. To make a dedication phone (01724) 270835 or email llh.enquirieis@nhs.net

He had lost his wife, Jade, just after the birth of their son, Hugo, in 2018. Instead, he spent the time writing a book for Hugo – and other young children - about bereavement. Now the book has been published and is finding new readers as children and families come to terms with losing loved ones to Coronavirus. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is written as a poem and linked by colourful illustrations to capture moments, memories, and feelings around the loss of Hugo’s mummy. It might just provide some help with a little one’s loss. Now Ric (pictured with his book), and District Cllr Hazel Brand, have presented copies to Misterton Library. The books will be absorbed into stock and will be available to readers across the county. Ric is two years into his journey as a single parent and widower and has found huge inspiration, peace, and acceptance from the loss of his wife by keeping her memory alive through the creation of his books. A follow-on book will be completed in the second lockdown. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is in paperback, retails at £5.99, and is available from Amazon

My Mum sadly passed away in June 2018. It would have been her birthday on Saturday 26th September. To celebrate this I’m embarking on a sponsored walk with a twist. The number 11 had special meaning to my Mum and our family. So from my Mums birthday I will be walking 11,000 steps daily (minimum) for 11 weeks until Friday 11th December, with the aim of raising a minimum of £1100 Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Thanks for any donation - our family are grateful and I know Mum would be too.
https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/James-Chatwin Update on the 11th of the 11th!! Still managing a minimum of 11,000 steps every day. Only a calendar month to go. Thanks to everyone that has sponsored me so far. I’m determined to finish this final month of my challenge and if anyone else is able to donate to this worthy cause it would really be appreciated. Stay safe everybody. James

Pathfinders .....
A walking group exploring the footpaths & ancient ways on & around The Isle
Our midweek & weekend circular walks take us all over The Isle and sometimes a bit beyond . We set forth in a small group all through the year, (but not in foul weather) as we explore some of the smashing places all around us . Our 4-6 mile walks finish by lunchtime, but occasionally there are longer ones . The repertoire of over 200 routes is very varied, we frequently get to places that some of us just didn’t know existed .... some with history or legend, others just beautiful (& there’s usually a photo-op too) . You don’t need to be super fit, just be willing & able & properly dressed for a decent walk. This year we’ve had some beautiful Woodland walks, Canal walks & some amazing Snowy walks (and some really muddy ones too). Come & join us start discovering what’s all around! Christmas Gift Appeal
Doncaster and North Lincolnshire We know Christmas will be a little different this year, that’s why we are collecting toys and gifts to help those local families who are in need of a little extra help. It’s been a tough year for everyone so we are pulling together to make sure those in need have an amazing Christmas to remember. We already have 170 children added to my list just in 2 days. It all just started me wanting to help a few families, but now its on a much bigger scale, which is fantastic! I do most of the work on my own, but I do have a couple of volunteers now helping me collect donations. All donations, either pre-loved or new must be clean and safe and full sets. We are particularly short of gifts for teenagers! Also donations of batteries, cleaning products as they need to be sanitized before being delivered.. We are not accepting clothes or shoes. There are two drop of locations for toys/gifts new and pre loved; Bargains to Buy at Station Road Dunscroft and Epworth Holmes and Gardens. I would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who has donated already its heart warming the generosity of local people .

Where is Santa and the Lions This Year? For many years Isle of Axholme Lions have had the benefit of Santa helping them out with their Christmas collection by visiting every village and collecting money door–to-door. Due to the pandemic things will not be quite the same but the Lions hope to be able to bring Santa to the Isle during December – but in a different way. Lion President Mike Hare said “We know everyone looks forward to seeing our float with Santa in December. Many say it’s only when we have been round that they know Christmas has properly started. This year we will not be able to collect funds door-to-door but we do want to take the float and Santa out to let folk know we are thinking of them. So, we do intend visiting every community but we will not be able to stop and speak to everyone who comes out to chat with Santa, particularly if there are groups of people in contravention of regulations. We want everyone, young and old, to stay safe and have a Happy Christmas” In a usual year Isle Lions have collected just over £10,000 and this is really important to them and means they can support good causes around the Isle, including local schools with things like the hugely successful #ROAR Project for KS2 children in Primary Schools. This year they have had to be more creative and are asking that residents consider donating direct to their bank account or use the QR Code that will be seen around the area in shops and other venues. Santa is also kindly offering a personalised video to children for a minimum donation of £5 – email santa@islelions.org.uk to get more information. So please remember: Santa does intend coming to help Isle of Axholme Lions this year He will probably NOT be able to stop and chat – but give him a big wave! Lions will NOT be knocking to ask for donations Please donate by paying direct to Account No 94143531 Sort Code 40 19 20 Look out for QR Code to donate easily Some people gather money through the year to donate – if they have a bag of coin, an email to Santa will get it collected
If all goes well this is the proposed schedule – track Santa as usual on www.isle-lions.org.uk
