OWSTON FERRY POSTMISTRESS WANTS TO REASSURE CUSTOMERS THAT HER POST OFFICE IS NOT CLOSING! • • • • •
Owston Ferry Post Office is staying open Royal Mail sorting office alongside Post Office closing in March Post Office is all geared up for Christmas Personal and business banking on behalf of all major banks Range of Post Office services including posting, click and collect, pre-order currencies, bill payments, car tax renewal, gift cards
Lynn Beck, Postmistress for Owston Ferry would like to quash inaccurate rumours that her Post Office is closing. Owston Ferry Post Office at 8-9 Market Place, Owston Ferry, DN9 1RB is staying open. However, Royal Mail, which rents space within the Post Office will no longer sort mail in this community from March. Lynn, who has been Postmistress for 20 years, said: “Please be reassured that Owston Ferry Post Office is not closing, but I will be losing income when Royal Mail, which is a separate company to Post Office, no longer rents space, so I would really like the community to support my Post Office. “People can do their personal and business banking at my branch on behalf of all the major high street banks, but not everyone realises that. The last bank in town at nearby Epworth, closed in September, so people have even further to travel to an actual bank, but people can deposit cash and cheques, make withdrawals and do their balances here. “Also people have busy lives so they are not always at home. They can safely have parcels delivered here with the click and collect service and they can order currencies on line and have it delivered to my branch. I’m also conveniently located for home shopping returns, car tax renewals and bill payments. “I’m all geared up for Christmas with cards and stationery and people can buy the popular One4All gift cards, which can be used in a large number of shops and even restaurants.” Owston Post Office is open: Monday to Saturday mornings from 9am – 12.30pm and Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 1.30 – 5.30pm.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Highlands and Islands of Scotland by Geoff Trinder Thursday December 7th at 7.30pm On Thursday December 7th we will be having an illustrated talk on the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Well known local naturalist and photographer Geoff Trinder will be taking us on a tour of many of the Scottish islands and the highland region. He will be telling us about the places and the wildlife found there and showing us images of a variety of animals, birds and landscapes. We meet at Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall), Stocks Hill, Belton, DN9 1PE Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. There will be refreshments and a raffle. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust can be found on their web site.
High Levels WI The October meeting of High Levels WI was a little more routine than the wonderful September Austrian Evening. The photos of which are on the website, www.highlevelswi.co.uk Instead of singing Jerusalem, we began with the first verse of “We plough the fields and scatter…..” and followed this with our traditional Harvest Auction. The very able auctioneer was Jayne, our President.
4
Everyone took something to auction. There was a great variety of largely home, or locally grown vegetables and fruit. There were sweets, chocolates, biscuits, plants, wines, honey and some very popular and rapidly bid for Chinese lanterns. Another traditional and highly popular product was packs of almond fingers. Members were obviously waiting to bid for these and prices escalated. Other baking favourites appeared and finally some welcome, miscellaneous items. Members totted up their expenditure and passed cash over to the treasurer. For some there were bargains and others much expense but the positive buzz of conversation while members socialised over refreshments indicated a very happy atmosphere and no doubt a healthy addition to High Levels WI accounts. The November meeting will be the AGM with a talk about Lister’s Crisps and the December meeting will be a Craft evening with members choosing to create origami decorations for the Christmas table. There will be some additional refreshments too. An outing to the pantomime at Scunthorpe is arranged and other outings are on the drawing board. Members have the opportunity to join in separate social events in addition to the regular meetings. Into 2024 there is another varied programme planned. Do look at the website, mentioned above and you will see the variety of things we get up to. Come and join us at The Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft 6.45pm start, on the third Wednesday each month.
Haxey Craft Fair would like to thank stall holders, the people who came to support it and those who helped out. It was a fantastic team effort and great to see people chatting and having fun. Money raised is £655.22 For Haxey PreSchool. The funds will be used o enhance a new sensory room for the children of the village.

Our Kiln Dried Firewood Logs are selected from the finest hardwood and have been through a kiln drying process, which means they are perfectly dried and ready to burn on your open fire or wood burning stove. Light, clean and easy to handle, they also emit a delightful aroma when burnt. The performance of your stove is directly related to the quality of the wood you use. Our kiln dried wood has a moisture content between 10 and 20 percent, ensuring it burns hotter for longer, increasing the efficiency of your stove or appliance.

Haxey Library - Volunteer or lose it The Library is ‘manned’ by volunteers and we have a problem. We are concerned that, without more volunteers, we will be unable to maintain the opening hours which we now operate. We are stretched, especially when holiday and illness absences occur. If you have time to spare why not consider becoming a ‘volunteer.’ Training is provided and you would be working with a volunteer who is familiar with the system. By volunteering you would help us to keep the library open as it is now and continue to provide a valuable service for the local community. Normally, we would only ask you to ‘man’ one of the weekly spots, but even if you could only manage to help once a fortnight this would still be very welcome. If you are interested please contact one of us during opening hours and we will give you further details, or just come in and see how we work. More information can also be obtained from North Lincolnshire libraries on 01724 297251 or library.enquiries@ northlincs.gov.uk Our opening hours are listed below. You will find us tucked in at the end of the Memorial Hall, almost opposite the Coop Supermarket.
Opening Hours Monday, 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Friday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Saturday, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Misterton Christmas Light Switch On! This year’s Christmas Lights switch-on is on Friday 1 December at 6.00pm, so get your Christmas jumper out of storage and join us at Church Meadow for mulled wine and drinks for children, courtesy of the Parish Council. There’s a selection of local stallholders – anyone wanting a space should contact Nikki on 891629 or nikki.jaggard-smith@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk. Santa will be there so come along and say hello and give him your Christmas list! The Christmas fund-raising group, Sparkles, has ceased operations and has passed its lamp-post motifs to the Council last month. But it was too late for the Council to get them checked and apply for a licence this year, but councillors will assess in January what needs to be done for next Christmas.
Alongside the lights switch-on is a Christmas Tree Festival. Pictured is last year’s winning tree. Everyone individuals, organisations, and businesses - is invited to enter. Dress a Christmas tree, which will be on display in the Parish Church from Friday 1 December for the weekend. The height of the tree should not be more than four feet (1.25metres). Any lights should be battery powered. Please include the name of your organisation or business on a sheet of card or paper no bigger than A4, with any other information you want to give; this will be displayed with the tree. Bring trees to the Parish Church between 2.004.00pm on Friday 1 December. There's a chance to win a prize for the bestdressed entry. There’s another chance for people to see the Christmas Tree entries on Saturday 2 December (during the Church’s annual Christmas Coffee Morning from 10.00am to 12noon).

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts November 2023 Autumn nights are perfect for outings in the dark and we have enjoyed a few of these this month. The cubs and scouts shared an outing to Boston Park to feed the animals in an afterhours trip and to explore the Maize Maze! We also spent a session re-learning how to sew on the badges in the right places so that we look smart ahead of the Remembrance parade on Sunday 12th November. We will join all the other uniformed organisations in parading the length of Haxey from the youth Hub to the church in memory of those who have served and those who lost their lives in service of their country. After the church service we will lay a wreath at the memorial. The cubs enjoyed a pumpkin carving session too. Some very creative and artistic skills at work! Other skills we have been working on are our bushcraft survival skills. The scouts spent a Saturday at Lupine Woods in Haxey developing these skills. We built shelters and prepared open fires, lighting them with strikers, and searched the woodland for suitable hazel twigs for toasting marshmallows on. The weather held fair while we made lunch to be cooked on the fire – we made bread twists, experimenting with flavours such as paprika, and wrapping twists around hotdog sausages for variety. For dessert we made smores (marshmallow and chocolate in between digestive biscuits), and fruit baked with chocolate wrapped in foil (banana or apple). After lunch we cleared the site, disassembling our knots and “leaving no trace” and then developed games from natural materials. This month scouts will focus on their signaller badge, making sure they know the NATO phonetic alphabet for carrying messages, and also learning morse code (buzzer or lights) and practising it. We will also be testing our night navigation skills with an adventure in an unfamiliar local area. Finally, we have a plan for restarting the Beavers section - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join the newly forming Beavers. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm.
Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.
All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, and Cub enquiries should go to Matthieu at: matthieu_maloigne@mentor.com. 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

St Martins Primary School has been

busy participating in their annual Harvest Festival. Harvest festivals are an important part of the school year for St Martin’s pupils. They provide an opportunity for students to celebrate the earth's bounty and express their gratitude for what they have been given. This year the pupils from St Martin’s gathered food donations for The Isle of Axholme Food Share Project which is based in Haxey and supports families in the Isle of Axholme with weekly food ‘top-ups’. St Martin’s is now proud to have set up a regular donation basket for the project to be used all year round. St Martin’s has also been helping the community further by making Christmas cards for the residents of Owston Ferry.
