The bats decorated our windows and the spiders crawled down our woodwork. The owl and the cat familiar were out and the skeleton hung in the porch. All lanterns and pumpkins were lit and we awaited with anticipation the callers in fancy dress with our selection of goodies and sweets. We had only ONE caller all night accompanied by discreet Dad. What is wrong with the young of Owston Ferry. Can they not adventure beyond the Market Square. There are four or five houses in North Street who may not bother another year except to perhaps have their own get together and share their goodies between them Another tradition is about to bite the dust.

Now & Then—Then & Now By Anthony Catherall
This month and every month see Isle village scenes in bygone days and compare to today’s image
A pretty summer scene on the River Trent at Owston Ferry circa 1920’s. The Welshman Tug Boat towing barges upstream towards Gainsborough. Originally built in 1896 The Welshman was regularly seen on the river, but eventually broken up in 1953. At the time of this photograph, the boat was owned by the United Towing Company Ltd of Hull, a company formed in 1920 by seven Humber tug companies, they had a fleet of 36 vessels. Initially the business concentrated on port, river, and costal towage, towing coal barges, meeting the sail grain ships from Australia and taking barges across the North Sea. The managing director Thomas Clarkson Spink, held his post for 40 years. The House Flag of United (left) can be seen in The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich a lovely place to visit. Below, a similar location at Owston Ferry. Narrowboat ‘Earnest’ heading downstream towards Keadby. (TNC) signifies the ‘Tuesday Night Club’ a gentlemen’s drinking club. I photographed it as it was passing the White Hart Public house on 21 June 2015. Earnest has been modified for coastal use, and has been seen for years all over the British Isles I wish all the readers, my compliments of the season and a happy 2017.

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall
Jun. 28th. Yesterday my cold got the better of me. I didn’t feel like doing a thing. We men are poor things when off colour; we want someone to comfort us, but can’t get that in the Army, or POW. The only one who could comfort me is you my dear sweet wife and you are so, oh so far out of my reach. Oh when will that happy day come. I pray to God, that it won’t be long. You my dear know what this parting for so long is at times it’s nearly past bearing. Jun. 29th. We are getting a lot of fruit in now. Some issue, and some out of the canteen. I’m not so hungry these days; it’s the hot weather. Feel a lot better tonight. Jun. 30th. Nearly better but my foot still wants a bandage on, what a while it has been, blood must be as thin as water, it would have been better weeks ago in normal life. Have a lovely letter from you dear. Jul. 1st. Writing to you this morning, but I can’t tell you half I would like, there is not enough paper. It’s a case of, I’m all right, hope you are, yours etc, Cliff. Not aloud (allowed) to put kisses on, they think it might be a code of some kind. Trousers go to have a red patch put on. Good old parcels up again. Jul. 2nd. A farmer brings me some flowers in they are wild ones, but look OK. They are on my shelf against your photo dear. More onions, in Crib competition. Jul.3rd. We should have been packing our bags up and off to Haxey Feast today, had we still been at Goole. Wouldn’t Julie have been excited? Jul. 4th. Sunday I can wish you many happy returns in thought only dear. How I am thinking of you tonight. It’s a lovely summer night, the hut is nearly empty, there’s a concert going on outside. I don’t often go to them; it’s the only time one gets a bit of quiet in here. I expect you will have gone to Chapel. Went to a service this morning given by a Free Church Padre, he’s a new Padre to the camp. I will be going later to the service by the regular Padre. Last night we could see cracks and bomb flashes, also hear them in Rome direction. Have two meals from cookhouse today, good one, Mace and onions, tomatoes and greens, also issue of figs this morning. So once more your birthday passes dear. Please God may I be with you at your next one. Goodnight my darling one and to our darling Julie xxx July 8th. More farmers go out to work, back to one meal a day again. Did not win, the crib competition. Jul. 9th. Thundering and rain this morning, but hot now. Jul. 11th. Sunday night. Concert going on outside, but I prefer the bit of quiet in the hut. Itie papers say Sicily has been invaded, it’s made us happy and dreams of been free soon. More men leaving in the morning to work in Estonia where that is I know not. Receive letter from Aunt Betsy, also one from Harold, says he’s sent books, but not received any yet. This is how the days go now. Rise at 7am. Wash. Roll call, 7.30 to 8.30. We then brew and have breakfast, which lasts about one hour. Bread and cheese comes up, so that’s what we get. Tidy up a bit and it’s 11.30 in no time, which is dinner, which is now either rice or mace and onions.12.00 mid-day to 1.30, I mostly have a lie down or read if I have a book. 1.30pm, another brew with mostly a couple of biscuits. If I have two each day, they will last until the next parcel. 2.00 until 4.30 pm I either read or play cards, or sleep, not much sleep though; I never could in the daytime. 4.30 roll call to 5.30pm. 6.30pm, we brew again and have evening meal, which is the main one. I save most of my loaf for it and have a tin of something out of parcel, and that’s finished at 7.30pm. 7.30 I go outside and walk about a bit, or watch them playing basketball, then come in again, mostly play cards, sometimes, I wash any clothes that want doing, after tea, it’s not so crowded then. Go to bed about 10.00 to 10.30pm sometimes of course there’s a bit of patching or mending of some kind. On Sundays we always have a brew before roll-call, which is half an hour later. Len, Les, Bill and I take it in turns to get up and do it was my turn this morning. To advertise please call 01302 532676 or 07912 643010 15 Service is at 8.0am shall be going. POW news as just come. This cute boy is Jools, a four year old Jack Russell Terrier. Jools is great with people- very friendly, but a bit shy at first. He is very well-behaved and loves to play ball! He is not good with other dogs or cats, so would need to be the only pet in a home with older children. Jools is neutered and fully vaccinated. 1st we will be having our annual members photographic evening which is always very popular. Anyone can bring along a small selection of photographs on any subject and share these with everyone so we have a very varied night of entertainment. You don't have to be a brilliant photographer so don't be shy. Please let Tony Lee know in advance if you wish to show your images so that we can arrange the order. Tel. 01427 753831. On Thursday January 5th Geoff Lee will be entertaining us with an illustrated talk on the wildlife of the Yorkshire coast. Geoff is a very good photographer who has talked to the group several times on different subjects. The Yorkshire coast is a wonderful area which is on our doorstep, ranging from high cliffs to low sandy beaches and with beautiful countryside such as the Yorkshire Moors. These support a wide range of wildlife so do come along enjoy the evening. All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. REMEMBRANCE’ TREE AT CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCHON– Misterton There will be a special Christmas tree among those on display at the Parish Council’s Christmas Tree Festival in the Parish Church. By buying a star to hang on the tree with a message, the ‘Remembrance’ tree will be a chance to think about those no longer with us for the festive season. Lighting up the village for Christmas is on Friday 2 December from 6.00pm on Church Meadow (in the Parish Church, if wet). There will be a range of stalls and refreshments. The display of Christmas trees in the Parish Church will run from Friday 2 to Saturday 10 December. Businesses, organisations, and residents are invited to dress a Christmas tree in time for the occasion – there’s a £5 fee but the best-dressed tree will win a prize. For all the details, contact The Misterton Centre (tel: 891872). There’s a chance to vote for your favourite trees – just call in, fill in a ballot paper, and post it in the special box. The winner of the ‘people’s choice’ Christmas tree will be announced on Saturday 10 December at a coffee morning in the Church.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School After a restful and well deserved half term, it's full steam ahead for the children (and staff!) After only a couple of weeks back, the children have completed lots of fun activities with plenty of more in the pipeline. Our Year 1 children had an action packed day at Austerfield Study Centre recently, learning all about map reading, the points of a compass and putting this into practice with some orienteering. The afternoon saw the children forage for items for some 'wild art', where they collected some colourful autumn leaves, cones and seeds to make some beautiful displays. This trip supported the children's learning journey, and everyone had a brilliant time. Both years 3 and 4 held a pottery day in school to support their topic work on Ancient Greece. The children each made a Greek Vase, which will be taken away for firing, before returning to school to be decorated in a Greek style. The children can let their imagination's run back into this interesting time period, and bring to life their own piece of history. Although the day was a bit messy, the children enjoyed making their very own Greek pot. Friday 11th November saw the school councillors attend the war memorial in the village, to pay their respects on behalf of the school to those who fell in both World Wars. We shall never forget those brave young men from our villages who fought to pave a better future for us all. We will remember them. 14th-18th November is our Anti-bullying week. All children will take part in activities to identify bullying, and what to do if they witness or think they are being bullied. The school takes this issue very seriously. Our anti-bullying policy can be found on our school website. If you need to discuss any issue regarding your child's welfare at school please make an appointment with your child's class teacher or a senior leader. On Friday 18th November is the annual BBC Children in Need appeal. At the time of writing, our children will be holding a spotty non-uniform day, and will raise Ezra funds by holding a spotty cake sale. Watch out for next month's issue for pictures! At the end of the month, our pupils will be attending at St Nicholas Church for our annual Advent service, and important date on the Christian Calendar. This is an exciting time for the children as it is the commencement of ou Christmas celebrations, the finale being on the last day of term with a Christmas Carol service. See you there! On a final note, can parents and carers travelling by car please park considerately outside of school. It is important not to block our neighbour's driveways, and is forbidden to park on the yellow zig zag lines directly outside of school. Have you considered parking further away from school and enjoying a brisk walk instead? It is also a timely reminder for parents and carers to check that their child is being carried in the correct child seat for their height (not age). The correct seat information can be found via the ROSPA website, or childcarseats.org.uk
