Editors Letter‌ This months issue is full of interesting articles:
The Future of the Festival of the Plough; last month a meeting was held to discuss its future.! The Plough has been held in Low Burnham for over 30 years and with numbers dwindling, thoughts with the committee whether to continue or not. I am glad to report the show will go on! The date is set for Sunday 21st September 2014. If you would like to get involved with the Plough their next meeting is at the Epworth Thurlow on February 4th at 7pm. Please support your local event and be part of its history. Full report is on page 20. Isle rescue who advertise on a regular basis is a great charity, they are continually looking for loving homes for rescue cats and dogs. Each month we have a pet of the month. Take a look on page 35. Can you give Prudence a home she deserves? I was tempted and went to see her, but having four dogs of my own and a small child she wasn't suitable! I am sure she would make someone a great companion. Thank you from Santa & the Lions May I use the Arrow to express sincere thanks to all those marvellous people in the Isle who so generously supported Santa on his journey around the Isle this year? Santa visited every village in the Isle and delighted children, mums and dads, grandparents and others, as well as raising much needed record funds for good causes. News, News, News, News, News, News, News... Spring Cleaning is about to Begin! Have you noticed the days are already a little longer? Before the garden planting starts to call us, we think it is time to Spring Clean and that includes clearing our Hall. This is advance notice of our March , Friendly Carboot Sale so that you can gather together your un wanted items for sale. All Saints Church wants to achieve the reopening of the Collinson Cooper Hall both for church and community use. The hall was originally built in the 1960’s through the hard work and generosity of the ‘youngsters’ of that era but was closed in 2003 as a result of structural issues with the roof. Plans and fund raising are now in progress to repair and upgrade the Hall . Our first car boot sale was labelled friendly and fun by some of the visitors, so we hope you’ll spring clean and bring along saleable items or come and browse, buy and enjoy the company.

Rhubarb Theatre Company are coming to West Butterwick on Friday 28th February at 7pm. The production is ‘The Flying Flapper’. ‘Doris Grimblebottom seems to lead an uneventful life. Members of the Epworth and District Flower Club met at Hatty’s restaurant for their first meeting of 2014. All savoured dishes from a pleasant menu and enjoyed the evening. Debbie Beecher, the Chair of the group gave information on several forthcoming events and reminded members that the group will next meet in the usual place in Haxey, at the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30 on Monday, 10th February for their A.G.M. The Epworth and District W .I. usually meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 7.30p.m. in the small hall of Epworth Imperial Hall. At their first meeting of 2014 there was discussion about the enjoyment of the Christmas meeting and the variety of Christmas crafts produced as gifts for members. Local and national W. I. issues were publicised and discussed and the group will be considering some sort of recognition of its 10th anniversary this year. Then the evening's activity began. Mue Broadhurst, a member of the group, assisted all members to paint a rose. Each person was given a canvas and pictures of roses for inspiration were circulated. Mue provided all of the necessary materials and gave support and advice on technique as each member enjoyed her task. After an hour or so a variety of unique paintings of roses was produced. All members had enjoyed the evening and each was able to take home their "work of art". The programme for the year includes a talk by a local financial advisor, a talk about the work of the Alzheimer's Society, a visit to The Smithy at Owston Ferry, First Aid and other topics. Please join us if you feel interested in belonging to a local branch of an important national institution. School is buzzing with activity with lots of things happening. The children have enjoyed a pantomime, and have been busy having a sort out for our Bags to School event. Thanks to all who have taken time to contribute unwanted items. The amount of money raised will be published as soon as we know it, with these vital funds going back into school for the benefit of all children. You support really is appreciated. Year 5 recently turned their hand to the criminal justice system, and became magistrates for the day. They set up their classroom as a court room and used a script for the case they were to hear. A jury was selected, who then had to decide if the defendant was guilty, or not guilty. This was a very informative day and much was learnt by all. A journalist from The Scunthorpe Telegraph has been into school to visit year 6. He spoke about what his job involves, and coached the children when they were given the opportunity to write their own articles. These were published in The Telegraph on 23rd January so we hope you managed to buy a copy to see examples of the children's fantastic work. The children enjoyed a Candlemas Service on 31st January up at St Nicholas' Church. Candlemas is the Christian celebration of light and marks the mid point of winter between the shortest day and spring equinox. According to old folklore, 'If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, winter will have another fight; If Candlemas Day brings Cloud and rain, winter won't come again. If Candlemas Day be dry and fair, the half o the winter's to come and mair; If Candlemas Day be wet and foul, the half o the winter's gane at Yule' We'll see what happens! We are also holding a disco for the children on Thursday 13th February, tickets available in school for those wishing to attend. It is an ideal opportunity for the children to let their hair down and have some fun before half term. Preparations are underway for our annual 'Haxey's Got Talent' which will be held in school on the evening of Thursday 20th April. For all budding singers, dancers, magicians, actors, actresses, poets, comedians etc etc, this is the ideal opportunity to showcase your talent! Prizes awarded on the night, please look out for literature advertising the event nearer the time. So get practising! It is open to all pupils at the school in all years, and was extremely popular last year so book early for your child's place to avoid disappointment.

This month and every month we feature a unique recipe from The Epworth Cookbook 1982. NO 2. CARROT PUDDING Page 28 6 oz self raising flour Half teaspoon baking powder 2oz sultanas 2 oz currants
4oz grated carrot 1 large egg milk to mix 2 oz sugar 2 oz margarine
METHOD Cream margarine and sugar together, add egg (well beaten) with a little of the flour. Add dried fruit and grated carrot and mix well. Add the rest of the flour and baking powder add milk to mix to a dropping consistency. Put mixture into a 1 pint greased basin, cover with greaseproof paper and tie in a cloth and steam for two and half hours. Serve with custard or sweet wine sauce. FUTURE OF THE FESTIVAL OF THE PLOUGH " I believe a bright light was switched on at the recent Festival of the Plough committee meeting on Tuesday 7 January 2014." The room was packed full with 18 committee members, and we welcomed 3 new visitors and Cllr. & Cabinet Member Rob Waltham, representing Andrew Percy MP and North Lincolnshire Council Leader Liz Redfern, who were unavailable One of Cllr. Waltham's first statement was "we will help in any way we can". It was pointed out by our treasurer Andrew Houlden, that there was enough money in reserves to finance another one event. With a unanimous vote following, it was proposed and I quote the agreed statement, " The Festival of the Plough will run on 21 September 2014. The committee are reviewing its operation following last years festival". The manpower issue still remains though, in that we desperately need more volunteers to help on the run up to the event and on the day itself. This issue was again made clear to the meeting. Manpower was eased somewhat, in two aspects. First, by one of the new attendee's Fiona McCormack, whose husband, Mark McCormack works with the young footballers of Epworth, The Epworth Colts, he may be able to encourage his teams to help by pitching in on the day. She also said she would be able to help our colleague Dr.Joe Firth, with our website. Secondly, Cllr. Waltham, outlined some of the North Lincolnshire Councils initiatives of Voluntary Action Teams that may be able to give us assistance. These could include TATA & Nat West Bank who run Social Well Being Events providing valued manpower. He went on to say in some detail, about the possibility of the committee applying for Community Grant Funding on a sliding scale. This of course would be subject to a satisfactory business plan being in force, of which currently one is already in the pipeline. If successful the grant, for a set period could amount to several thousand pounds, ensuring healthy reserves for the FOTP. This point being well received, it was mentioned by some of the committee that they feel North Lincs. Council has a 'Jewel in the Crown' in their midst. By ongoing involvement by the council, it could indeed secure the future of the event for many years to come. Cllr. Waltham continued on another tack, regarding the commitment of our current MP Andrew Percy. Being a former teacher he could generate substantial interest with the local schools in the Isle, in for example, the like of the Scarecrow competition and other interesting fields for the schoolchildren concerning agriculture. Help and motivation could also come from local Epworth resident and leader of North Lincs. Cllr Liz Redfern. He went on, to explain her link with Epworth's South Axholme School. Tourism in the area also could see a welcome benefit through Christine Edwards of tourism. In encouraging younger people to get involved it's not only manpower we would like, but and important point about education. ' The Plough, in part of its endeavour, should and could provide a an 'Agricultural Experience' for the younger members of our community together with all the other attractions that are available, like all the crafts, and trades that show off their skills on the day. Being a County with a farming heritage, anything that can inform or educate like the live event of the FOTP with all the plant that we attract that includes, Reapers, Threshing machines, tractors, pumps, animals, poultry, Stooking and stacking, Potters wheel etc etc. It is quite rare that people can experience so much live action in one day, and indeed the work with crops before the event to be used on the day in the Threshing machine. "Although then, we are in the early stages of this needy renaissance for the annual event, I am very hopeful that we are putting in place a great future for the festival for future generations". Our AGM, will be held at the same venue the Thurlow Pavilion, on February 4th at 7pm. We will still, and continually welcome new people together with any North Lincolnshire Council officials and their councillors to drive the festival forward. Please come and join us and together let us make 'hay' in this coming year.

New Year – New Beginnings As we start the New Year I would like to introduce myself as the new Head Teacher of Westwoodside Church of England Academy. I am delighted to be joining a very warm and welcoming school community and I look forward to leading the school on the next stage of its journey. We have also welcomed Mrs Ballinger to our Foundation Unit and we have a group of new starters settling into our attractive unit as I write. Children across the school are engaged in their new themes for the term including: Vikings, Greeks, The Circus and ‘Day and Night’. On Friday 10th January our Y1 and Y2 classes took part in a fantastic circus workshop. The children were taught lots of circus tricks including juggling, walking on stilts and using a tightrope! This took a lot of concentration, courage and perseverance which supports our ‘personal strengths’ focus for the term. I look forward to sharing more news from Westwoodside as the year progresses. Camera Club News The first meeting of 2014 for Axholme Camera Club was held on Tuesday 7th it was an Open to non members of the general public and visitors. The speaker for the evening was our very own Chairman Geoff Trinder, his talk was titled “The World Of Animal Magic”. Geoff is renowned for his photographs of birds and animals and his talk did not disappoint the members. The photographs are of the very high quality and the description of the reptiles, insects and animals made it more interesting.

We saw in pictures, creatures from North America, The Amazon, India, Japan, Africa, The Falklands Islands, Scotland and many more places. Geoff and his wife Chris are world travellers looking for the rare and wonderful aspects of natural history subjects.

Some years later in the early 1940's John Torn, lived in the middle house with parents Frank & Vera. Next door were Ron & Joyce Smithson. The shop from at least 1920 was run by Mrs Moore, whilst husband Ben had a bakery near the Market Square. Ben used to run around the local villages Misterton, West Stockwith, Gunthorpe and Owston delivering his bread in his Pony & Trap. The Askew's, followed on the business prior to Mrs Scott & Miss Ship taking over. Once John remembers, that in the shop window was an almost a life-sized figure similar to the one used on Robertson's Jam. One night John's granddad William Torn, had one to many at the local hostelry, and when he passed by, saw the lit-up figure flashing he thought someone was inside with a torch committing a burglary and called the local constabulary P.C. Daunbney. On Sundays then, shops were not allowed to open, so any sales had to be via the back door. In the house on the corner once lived Geoff Brocklebank. Owston was a safe place to live in those days said John and we loved watching the Aegir on the River Trent. Nicknames were very popular in the village then, he remembers (Jarger) Duffield - (Tatt) Pettett - (Buck) Whitely - (Wag) Scholey. Living near the church was (Jigger) Jackson a funny gentleman who never swore. He attained his nickname of course by pre-fixing words like 'Jigger me' or 'Jigger it'. Of interest, is the sign one of which indicates the way to Haxey railway station (closed to passengers in July 1933) along Station Road. Below the scene today summer 2013, the wall gone, trees in leaf, modern road markings and signs. The village shop, has disappeared the window and door being bricked up, still though an Isle country village, but sadly no longer, the 'Port on the Trent'.

In the last article I started looking at pruning your freestanding apple trees. This month I return to pruning, looking at pruning both those stubby, spur systems that can produce many apples as well as creating a framework for developing new growth and fruit. Just to remind ourselves – we want to encourage lots of fruit buds on our apple trees. Fruit buds are generated on 2 year old wood and older. In other words, they will not appear on new wood as it grows. However, if you leave that new wood unpruned fruiting buds will appear on that wood. From these buds short, stubby spur systems develop. Let's look at pruning our tree. After the initial work set out in last month's article it is time to take out the secateurs to the new growth generated last year. Before we look at the spurs we need to look at vigorous new shoots growing towards the outside of the tree. These might be coming from spurs or at the end of branches. In order to increase the number of fruiting buds or to extend the shape and size of your tree you can start a 3 year cycle of pruning with these shoots. Working on a branch at a time, in this first year you will leave these shoots unpruned. Next summer they will grow further from the terminal bud (the mark indicating the start of last year's new growth). In a year's time you will prune that summer's growth back to the terminal bud, noticing that the older wood on the shoot has developed fruiting buds (as it is 2 year old wood). After a further year's growth you will prune this wood back to 1 bud above the very starting point of the 3 year system. This highly effective method of pruning is called renewal pruning. After working round the tree we will look next at the existing spur systems. Any new short spurs growing from the branch should be left. If you want to maintain the spur systems prune new growth coming from an existing spur with a slanting cut above the first bud above the terminal bud. Trees vary in the amount of vigour they put into new shoots. If your existing spur systems look rather cluttered remove some of the spurs. If they are too close to each other on the branch (12 to 18” apart as a rule of thumb) you could remove the entire system by pruning flush with the branch. You may see a number of short, weak shoots – perhaps less than 9” long. Unless these are in the way I suggest that you leave them unpruned. An added advantage is that there is often a fruit bud at the tip of the shoot. Pruning your spurs in this way will take out quite a lot of new shoots. Remember that we should not be taking out more than a quarter of new growth. A final word of encouragement. Pruning can seem a complicated and daunting task. It requires a little knowledge, but many of the choices are more art than science. You choose how much to prune and what shape you want your tree. Piano Concert Success

Each year end is celebrated at the ‘Dean Headland School of Piano’ with a private concert performed by Deans’ younger students. This year the concert involved seven students ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old. Pictured left; Poppy Elliot, Heather Jenman, Laura Jenman, Holly Anderson, Millie Elliot, Dan Griffiths and Steve Huxley-Jones. The main aims of the concert is for the students to gain confidence in performing in front of a small audience, get a feel for what other students are learning and also to see how much progress can be made if they follow Deans’ unique and very effective teaching methods. At the end of each year Dean awards one deserving student with the coveted Dean Headland Progress Cup. This year the trophy goes to Millie Elliot (pictured right) for working so hard and achieving the most improvement. Every student, whether they are of school, work or retirement age has an equal chance of being awarded this trophy as it is presented to the student who has improved the most over the year. It’s not just about how much and how often the student has practised but about how much desire they have to advance, and how they apply the knowledge gained during their one to one weekly lessons. Gold, Silver and Bronze ‘Achievement Certificates’ are also awarded at the end of the winter concert to give students recognition for how well they have done over the year and to give them the encouragement and motivation to keep up the excellent work they are doing and to spur them on to further success. With a 100% pass rate record for students entering the ABRSM exams it’s no surprise that Holly Anderson (pictured left), one of Deans’ newest students has just passed her Grade four exam after just three months of tuition from Dean! Well done Holly and congratulations to all of Deans’ students that participated in the end of year concert.

NEWS FROM MISTERTON LOCAL DANCERS HEAD FOR LONDON’S ‘PHANTOM’ STAGE Twenty-one local dancers will be performing on the London stage in February. And to show off their routines, local people are invited to a dress rehearsal on Saturday 8 February at 1.00pm at Misterton Sports Social Club, home of the EverettFox School of Dance.

Pupils of Misterton’s Everett-Fox School of Dance will be performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End a week after the dress rehearsal. Local youngsters have never had this sort of opportunity before and want residents to help celebrate this achievement. If you would like to attend, please use the Social Club entrance. You will be able to buy refreshments in the Club before and after the show. All the dancers ask is a minimum donation of £1 each. All monies raised will go towards the costs of costumes for the London show. Dance schools from across England will be rehearsing then performing in the Edwardian Grade 2 listed theatre, which seats over 1000, in the heart of London’s theatreland. For 28 years, Her Majesty’s Theatre has been home to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera. Dancers will be supported by the professional theatre team, who work on the hit musical six nights a week.

Then pupils from all the dance schools join together for a grand finale. The trip has been organised at no cost to Misterton’s dance pupils (and an accompanying parent) thanks to sponsorship from District and County Cllrs, Hazel Brand and Liz Yates, Misterton Sports Social Club, Misterton Wells Charity, Marshall’s Yard, and Value Comparison Ltd (owner of Millennium House).

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School We are well and truly back in to the swing of things for 2014. We began our new year with a series of Epiphany Assemblies, celebrating the visit of the three Wise Men to Jesus. This is the final part of the Christmas story. There are some interesting themes planned across both schools for this term which will certainly capture the imagination! We continue to plan from the interests of the children aiming to provide them with crosscurricular and meaningful learning experiences that are highly enjoyable, thus maintaining motivation and enthusiasm. Key Stage 2 (Years 3 – 6) at St Matin’s is focusing on ‘recycling’. The children have been sorting our school waste according to whether it can be reduced, recycled, reused or composted. Over the next few weeks, the children will be reflecting upon how people affect the environment and the ways that people attempt to look after the present and safeguard the future through sustainable development. St Martin’s Football Team, comprising of boys and girls in Years 4-6, has been training in readiness for their first tournament at Appleby Frodingham Sports Stadium on Friday 24th January. Their practices have included ball control, penalty taking and fitness to improve their stamina. We wish them well in the tournament! West Butterwick School is to enter a Wake Up and Shake Up Tournament. For those of you not yet familiar with ‘Wake Up and Shake Up’, this is a daily physical programme that engages children of all ages in a fun and lively way. The children learn easy routines to pop music and have a great time doing so! There is a ‘cool down’ and ‘calming’ activity to finish. Having completed this ‘Wake Up and Shake Up’, the children then approach their class work re-energised’ and in a state of ‘readiness to learn’. When done regularly over a sustained period of time, this programme has proved beneficial in lots of ways to the children:enjoyment of school life and a sense of well-being (staff too!), improved self-esteem impacting on other curriculum areas: improved co-ordination (gross motor skills then impacting on fine motor skills), improved rhythm and timing ( this has helped with music and dance lessons), improved concentration and application to tasks immediately after the exercise session, increased stamina, improved behaviour - when done at the end of lunchtime, playground squabbles are forgotten and afternoon class is much better. There appear to be many benefits to this enjoyable and fun physical activity! In Class 2 (Years 1 and 2), at St Martin’s, pupils are studying Winter weather, considering how it affects the school environment and using this as inspiration for writing Winter poetry. Years 1 and 2 will also be studying the village of Owston Ferry and local area which will be compared to a ‘contrasting’ location. Observational drawing skills are also being developed in connection with this topic and pupils’ drawings will be displayed in the ‘Classroom Art Gallery’.

At West Butterwick, the School Council is preparing to meet with a number of Parish Councillors on the 23rd January. This meeting will give our School Councillors a chance to find out what being a Parish Councillor entails and will also allow for some discussion about shared local priorities that the school may support with and vice versa. ‘Is there anybody out there?’ This is the question class 2 at West Butterwick would like to seek answers to this term, as the Junior pupils study the Earth and what lies beyond our atmosphere. They have already thought of questions such as ‘Is the moon made of cheese?’ – Wallace and Grommit might help with that one in connection with literacy as the children work on creating science fiction stories of other worlds and aliens. Another question generated by the class to inspire learning and investigation this term is; ‘what would happen if there was no moon….would there be only daytime?’ Research in Class 2’s science work will help them in finding out! Furthermore, West Butterwick school has invited in local artist ‘Martin Maywood’ to work with pupils on creating ‘our own universes’ and ‘big bangs’ with unique and exploratory art forms using paint. They will certainly be having a busy and exciting time! Infants at West Butterwick have been exploring space too, learning about the various planets and creating some of these from papier mache. Pupils learnt about Neil Armstrong, and successfully designed and made a moving picture with hinges, levers and pivots linked to skills development in Design and Technology. Over these next few weeks of this Spring term, the Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) is going to be focusing on Traditional Tales, starting with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Keep an eye on that porridge! Similarly to St Martin’s there is also going to be some exploratory work done on the locale, investigating how West Butterwick village has changed over the years. West Butterwick School’s involvement in the St Mary’s Family Services continues. The next one is to focus on Candlemas. Our Lighting the Candle Group of Pupil Worship Leaders plan their next short (20 minutes) Community Worship for Friday 7th February. The group will re-tell the story of David and Goliath and consider the theme of ‘faith and courage in oneself and God’. So, all in all, a busy and enthusiastic start to 2014. Can You Feel The Love? Valentine’s Day is approaching fast and it’s the perfect time to show your crush what they mean to you. A letter of love, a red rose, the perfect present... there are many ways to show your love this Valentine. The celebration originated from a bishop in Italy whose surname was Valentine. He performed weddings for couples whose parents would not agree to the marriage and presented the newlyweds with flowers. On February 14th 269 A.D. Saint Valentine was beheaded because of his Christian faith. Year 11 prom is this summer and what better way to tell your crush how you feel? We spoke to some year 11 pupils to find out what they thought would be the most romantic way to be asked to the prom; responses ranged from a casual face to face conversation to a more extravagant idea involving a plane with a personalised banner in tow. A considerable number of people told us that a romantic meal would be the best way to win their heart, but everyone agreed that that a timid text would receive a definite NO! In 2013 over 2 million people worldwide got married on Valentine’s Day, 11000 babies were conceived, 180 million Valentine’s Day cards were exchanged and 53% of woman confessed that they would end their relationship if they did not receive a Valentine’s gift! Doncaster Advanced Motorists Don’t Drink Drive Severe weather forecast: advice for drivers Dear readers, With the first snow of winter expected across the UK over the next few weeks Doncaster Advanced Motorists is repeating advice to motorists. Drivers who are unused to poor driving conditions should literally change the way they drive. If it’s snowing or icy, make sure you slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front of you. When roads are slippery it will take up to ten times longer to stop. So drop your speed and give yourself more time to slow down and stop – aim to slow down earlier. Motorists should take care even if roads have been treated. Don’t set off on your journey at the usual time thinking it’s ok, they’ve ‘done the roads’. Allow yourself extra time, even if it’s your usual drive to work or school. “The two second rule – the minimum distance between you and the vehicle in front – is too short for these wintry conditions. Take particular care around spreading vehicles and vehicles clearing snow and only overtake if you can do so safely.
