Community News Epworth and District Flower Club At their December meeting almost all of the Club's membership sat down to watch a short demonstration before they individually worked on a Christmas arrangement. Everyone was given a small hessian sack, like Santa's, into which they placed "presents" of three carnations. Members had been shown how to wrap each flower in an aspidistra leaf. Easy for the demonstrator but less easy for some of the mortals in the Club! Much merriment ensued but eventually there were approximately 24 Santa sacks with flowers and foliage. Each was personalised with decorative wire, glittery Christmas ornaments and Christmas ribbons. Another very successful workshop (with perhaps a little help for some!) was enjoyed and the evening's demonstrator was thanked for her ideas and efficiency. The evening continued with seasonal refreshments and the opportunity to socialise. The January meeting, a meal at the Epworth Tap was finalised and the February meeting advertised. It will be in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey on Monday, 8th February at 7.30. As always new members and friends will be welcome. Celia Jones

Update = This problem still continues to be monitored but calls for service regarding this issue have significantly reduced. Non Dwelling Burglaries. Update = This still remains an issue in this area please do everything possible to ensure that not only your home but any outbuildings/garages are locked and secure. Parking in Haxey/Westwoodside. Update = This is still an ongoing situation which is being monitored. People are still not thinking of other road users and what impact their parking will have especially on the elderly/disabled. NEW PRIORITY - : POACHING. Update = Several reports of poaching have been received from all the Isle of Axholme. Males have been seen with lurcher type dogs hare coursing or chasing deer. During December two male offenders have been reported for summons for such an offence and paperwork is being prepared to take these offender to court to answer for their crimes. Please do not hesitate to contact the police if you see such an offence taking place. Try to obtain as much detail as possible such as vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of offenders. Information At the beginning of December a new system called TrackMyCrime was introduced by Humberside Police. This scheme is to enhance the service the police gives to the general public when they unfortunately become victims of crime. When a person reports a crime now they will be asked to provide a current email address, once the crime report has been created they will be given the opportunity to register with this scheme. The benefits of this scheme is that the victim will be informed of the officer in the case and contact details for this person, they will be kept updated of the progress of the enquiry and be able to add property details as and when they discover it has been stolen. Humberside Police are asking the public to embrace this scheme so that the quality of service can be enhanced.

This month at the Rectory
Hi, my name is Cath and I'm one of the volunteers at Epworth Old Rectory. My role is gift shop manager so I'm responsible, under the site manager, for all activities concerning sales and reception. I also do some of the guiding round the house and garden, get dressed up in costume when needed, and don't mind helping out with all the other activities involved in keeping the year's events and the house up and running. Boring you might think not for a minute.
Until the first of March 2016 the rectory is closed to visitors after closing our doors at the end of October. However, we held the Christmas Craft Fair in November and great fun was had by all. We had 2 organised groups of visitors in November, then we reinstated the Candlelit tours on the 4th, 5th and 6th of December with full houses each day for these evening costumed tours with some delicious mulled fruit punch as part of the refreshments in Susanna's Kitchen sitting around the table with the fire crackling merrily in the grate. It was a marvellous atmosphere and we all enjoyed it staff and visitors alike, in fact some were reluctant to leave they became so comfortable. Even though we're closed work goes on with maintenance tasks to be done, the housekeeper working hard to clean every nook and cranny during closure, the manager and admin staff planning future events and what the next stages in the development plan is to be as well as having to attend innumerable meetings with all kinds of groups, the conservation group carry on with their work all year round, as does the gardener. Sarah is working hard cataloguing and recording all the exhibits that have been collected together ready for this years new

exhibition, plus having to plan and stage the exhibition, the subject being the Methodist Women's Movement in Britain which so far is looking to be very interesting and almost ready for staging. I've been busy doing stock checks and planning the ordering on new stock and working our which trade fairs, if any, I'll be going to this spring. Then there'll be a bit of touching up of the paintwork in the gift shop, getting the hoover and polish out for a thorough spring clean and restocking the shelves. Although we're closed till March 1st, we have two American tour groups coming in early February so we'll have to be ready for them, plus I'm out on two separate weeks giving group talks on the Physic Garden, and as always meetings to attend, the next one being the early season volunteers meeting when we all have a chance to get together over a coffee and biscuits to hear what's in store for us this year, and to find out how old friends have fared over the winter.
2015 Christmas Quiz "Just Desserts" ( in aid of Sheffield Children's Hospital ) As a result of a draw made by Mr B Flanagan of Epworth the following were selected for prizes. 1st Prize of £20 was won by Mrs Carol Wild of Epworth 2nd Prize of £10 was won by Mrs Joan Bickerstaff of Mansfield. 3rd Prize of £5 was won by Mrs Julie Thompson of Epworth. Approximately £350 (there are still a few outstanding donations) will be sent to the Sheffield Children's Hospital to help very sick children. I would like to thank all who purchased the quiz and all those who helped to distribute and sell the quiz on my behalf. Anne Broster ( quiz organiser )

Sept. 23rd. Make another kit-bag, and sell it for some cheese. Talk of moving. Mince pies in canteen just little ones but in English money seven and halfSept. 24th. pence. Rainy day. Stand by for moving. Send you a letter dear; hope you are getting them by now. Still plenty of bugs. Men looking smart now, those who where short have got rigged up, some Sept. 25th. have got knee breeches. I got a shirt, no socks to be had, hardly anybody has any, I don’t wear any, I've got a pair, but they are all darns. I’m keeping them for later. I got issued with a pair of pants and two pieces of cloth to be used for socks. Sept. 26th. Send cable home with new address on. Getting ready for moving. Sept. 27th. Arise 5am. Coffee at 5.30. All rush. As we go through the gate, I get my coat Sept. 28th. taken off me at last. It has served me well though. Ration for the trip a loaf, and tin of bully. So we leave Capua at 8am. Walk to station, and go by train to Fara, Sabina. It’s Lovely scenery, mostly mountains but very little agricultural land, few hayfields and fields of vines. See Oxen pulling ploughs and carts. Mules and Donkeys, never seen a horse yet. Arrive Fara Sabina 6.30pm. Raining and walking three miles to camp,(Camp 54) which was just a field of mud, what a welcome, wet through, mud up to the knees, nearly dark, lose my mates, and lose my cap! I spend the night in a little wooden hut, I sleep on concrete floor. Morning-mud is the first thing we see, get sorted out. Find my mate. Big Sept. 29th. tents of canvas, 68 men, in each tent. Mid-day, get some macaroni, first meal, so that quarter lb. loaf and bully had to last 30 hours, don’t know when we shall get parcels, there’s none in camp. Double-Decker beds again, I’m on the top this time, cold last night in bed, Sept.30th. have only one blanket. There are two camps here, 400 yards separating them, nearly 2000 men in each. The Ities are busy building huts’; hope they have them up before bad weather sets in. This place is 20 miles from Rome. We passed by the outskirts as we came here. Hot during day, cool at night. Hot, flies won’t leave you alone. Chaps out of next camp come and give us a Oct. 1st. concert, with band, good actors, and singers, (very good). Red Cross man here today, hope he gets some parcels here soon. The Oct. 2nd. scenery here is again mountains, can see a little village perched on the top of the small ones in the distance. Lovely sunsets. This camp is built on a deep slope. A green field at the bottom, but there’s a wire between us and that. The Mutual Aid has got going and things are better already. Water system bad, have to fill dishes and get washed out of it. Yet, one year ago we arrived at Kassasin. No parcels yet. Concert up tonight, after having a concert and services we always finish up by singing God Save The King, but the Ities order us today that we are not to sing any National Anthem anymore. 100 men start work on the building. Bricklayers, and Joiners and Labourers, Oct. 4th. they get double rations, but it’s not worth it TO BE CONTINUED NEXT MONTH

We hope you had a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year! Being a Year 6 means I have to do SATS this year. Very hard ones mind you! As the National Curriculum has changed, so has our work! We are now trying to learn things we probably haven’t done before in order to live up to the standard of the new SATS test in May. Last year we had the CHRISTMAS CONCERT (Straw and Order) at the Wroot Village Hall, I was Mr Proper (The Donkey’s Lawyer). And there were lots of funnier titles than mine! Also, some of us went to sing for the “over 60’s Christmas party” at the Village Hall. We also got SWEETS! There was also a Christmas party, “Father Christmas” was there” Everybody got books and my book was by Roald Dahl! We held a Christmas Fayre and there was a Tombola, Raffle, face painting and loads more! We saw a pantomime (Snow White) with Annie Fanny! Sadly the Bass Button was ripped down by the evil person! Luckily Annie Fanny had a brand new Whip Chain! Yeah! We finished our term with a Christingle Service, I ate some of the my sweets! Coming up we have Future Stars, Wake and Shake, PGL and Leavers’ Day! (I’m leaving this time ……).

Epworth Music Day 2016 This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 18 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Once again we will be putting together a daytime programme across 10 outdoor stages – with indoor alternatives if it is wet – and then an evening concert. Last June we attracted over 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2016. We already have had expressions of interest from 20 groups who want to play.
Details about Epworth Music Day can be found on our website at www.epworthmusicday.com or on our Facebook page. If you would like to perform in Epworth Music Day 2016 we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Please email us at peter.barnard@me.com or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
Folk dancing is alive and kicking in the Isle of Axholme!
Peter Barnard helps to organise the very successful Isle Dance for Health folk dances which have been running on Thursday afternoons in the spring and autumn for the past 3 years. Playing with musicians from his local band – the Lys St Georges Folk Dance Band - and sharing the dance calling with Kate Billmore, he leads 30 or more dancers to enjoy 2 hours' of dancing, good company and fun. The latest programme of these dances runs at 2.30pm on Thursday afternoons at St Andrew’s Church, Epworth in the first 3 Thursdays in February before moving to Crowle Pavilion, Godnow Road, Crowle until 10 March. Peter is also the chairman of AVID - Awaken Village in Dance - which organises informal folk dances once a month in different villages in the area. Starting at 8pm on the second Wednesday of the month, these dances attract musicians from the area and further afield as well as several dance callers. The next AVID dance is at the new Blaxton Village Hall on Wednesday 10 February. You see details of these dances on their web site www.aviddance.co.uk Peter says “These dances are for everyone. It’s wonderful dancing to live music and we make sure that the dances are suitable for those present. All the dances are taught and the dancers are guided through the moves and figures. It can be as energetic as you want it to be, but most importantly it’s good fun.” For more information about any of these dances or about the availability of the Lys St Georges Folk Dance Band, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.
If you have ever danced a doce do or a figure of 8 you'll know how much fun you can have in folk dancing. If not, why not give it a try? Here in the Isle of Axholme we are very lucky to have expert folk musicians and dance callers to lead you in learning the dance steps and figures.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, January 2016 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: The Foreman Carter Centre, Westwoodside Playing Field, Westwoodside, DN9 2DX Telephone: 01427 752228 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk
Parish Path Initiative The Parish Council are considering a proposal from North Lincolnshire Council that the Parish Council take over the maintenance of the footpaths and bridleways from April 2016. All the costs would be reimbursed by North Lincolnshire Council. Haxey Parish has over 40 miles of footpaths and bridleways, the most of any parish in North Lincolnshire. The advantage to the Parish Council is that it would allow it to respond more quickly to any issues that may arise. Grass will be cut at least twice per year and local improvements made to the surface, signage, bridges etc. The final decision as to whether we take over the footpaths will be made at the end of January. Photographic Competition 2016 The Parish Photographic Competition organised by the Parish Council and Axholme Camera Club will again be held this year. There are excellent prizes on offer so please send your entries in to Haxey Library before the closing date of 29th April 2016. Entries will be displayed and judged at the Annual Parish Meeting in May. All entries must be taken in the Parish since 1st January 2015 and by residents of the Parish. Each entrant is allowed to submit two photographs, with the minimum size of each print being 7” x 5”. All entries must have the Title of the print, their name, address and telephone number printed on paper and glued to the back of the photograph. The Categories this year will be Adult, Camera Club member, Youth 11 - 16 and Junior under 11. The Clean for the Queen initiative forms part of the celebrations to mark the Queen's 90th birthday in 2016.This is a national campaign to inspire residents and groups to join together for a few hours of litter picking in their local area in order to make it clean and tidy and to instil a sense of pride in their community. North Lincolnshire Council has signed up to support the campaign and they have offered to coordinate local events. Officers from the Council will be contacting Town and Parish Councils community groups and schools to discuss plans for litter picking activities and to offer support and advice as well as arranging to pick up the rubbish and supplying equipment. If you wish to take part you can contact North Lincolnshire Council on 01724 297775 and you can also register online at www.cleanforthequeen.co.uk where you can download the Clean for the Queen guide. Haxey Parish Community Awards The Haxey Parish Community Awards Scheme will commence shortly. In this edition of the newsletter is a blank proforma to enable Residents to nominate a local group and/or individual for the Parish Community Awards. A separate proforma is required for each nomination and a reminder of the criteria for the Awards is set out below: a. There will be 2 awards available: Haxey Parishioner of the year and Haxey Parish Group of the year. b. Recipients of the awards will receive a shield or framed photograph depicting a local historic event and a certificate that has been designed with the help of the local Primary Schools, marking the award, which they will retain. A larger shield will be displayed in the Parish Council Meeting Room recording the recipients and the year of the award. c. The basic criteria for the awards are as follows: (1) Nominees should either live or work in the Parish. (2) The activity nominees are involved in should benefit the Parish in some form. Mythical Monsters Would you like to meet a mythical monster on a dark West Butterwick night? Read our character descriptions to see what it would be like. The Minotaur The Minotaur is a half-bull, half-man creature with raging red eyes; horns sharper than knives and teeth like razor blades. He has giant bulky, muscular arms and legs that could crush a human’s skull into a million pieces! His huge cloven hooves send vibrations through your body as he stalks his prey through the damp, gloomy labyrinth. The putrid stench of the Minotaur haunts the air and invades the senses of his defenceless victims. By Year 5 and 6 The Gorgon – Medusa Medusa is a half-human, half-snake that is known as a gorgon. She has blood-shot eyes that go straight through you. Her skin is a disgusting pale green – you wouldn’t want to see her! Her teeth are not like any normal teeth, they are razor blades that can cut through anything. Personally I wouldn’t mess with her! Medusa has a long snake like and has hair that is dozens of slithering sankes which slime slowly on her shoulders. She could kill her victims in a milli-second. She smells like foul faeces that follows her around her lair. By Daisy Willerton Medusa Medusa is a vicious gorgon with razor sharp tusks that tear human flesh. She has bloodshot eyes that will turn you into stone if you take one glance at them. She has snakes for hair and poison that squirts out of her fangs. Her eyes are so orange that she looks really ugly. Her nauseating smell is putrid as she never has a shower. The snakes, growing for hair, are green and slimy; at a distance it looks like she has grass for hair. She lives in solitude in the depths of her cave waiting for someone or something to come past. Medusa once was a beautiful woman until she got changed into a horrible beast.

EPWORTH THURLOW PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP
In this day and age when Mums and Dads are busy at home or work, one thing is always foremost in their minds, their children's safety. As a Granddad of five, I too value this philosophy. Given that, when parents and Mums in particular leave their child in the care of others they seek comfort, security and peace of mind. Striving also for good early pre-school play and learning experience, working parents are most happy and contented during these formative years as their children's education commences knowing their child is in a safe and good environment. Early this January, I had the privilege and pleasure to be invited and see for myself by spending a morning at the Epworth Thurlow Pre-School Playgroup adjacent to the Thurlow Pavilion in the War Memorial Fields at Station Road Epworth. There were so many wonderful features to this excellent self funded facility that it took me sometime to absorb them all. But the number one feature for me was the security of the staff and children inside. The security provided for them all, was a high steel fence with locked gates that completely surrounds the whole curtilage. Regular fire and escape drills are carried out.
Opened in 1999 (following selling bricks to raise the finance) the playgroup enjoys the expertise of the altruistic Ann Stewart who has been looking after young children for the past 27 years, a giver to the community if there ever was one. With her dedicated and enthusiastic staff of Emma Antcliffe, Louise Wright, and Helen Walker, all DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) approved, it really is a haven for the children. A parent committee chaired by Evonne Fisher completes the facility. I was hosted on the day, by a mother of two Jo Costello, who has one child attending, and one starting later in the year; she extolled her obvious happiness having her young family as members of the group. Other features that I was impressed with were many and varied. Firstly and mandatory, the play group is regularly inspected and regulated by Ofsted (Office for standards in Education). Off road parking was extensive, a central location that's easy to get to, a signing in book for extra security, a warm and cosy environment with a mix of very suitable and comfortable furniture, brightly decorated attractive wall coverings, a store cupboard, a clean and serviceable kitchen, excellent male and female toilets all with children friendly basins. Outside facilities are also superb they include, their small summer garden complete with shed where they grow their own vegetables and strawberries for example, then when they ripen learn how to prepare and make leek & potato soup followed by and strawberries and cream. Along with the gardening theme is the 'Mud Garden' for play and experimenting with lots of pots and pans, a timber and tyre pile. Couple that with flexible sessions to suit parents and most of all, the smiling faces of the children having a plethora of toys, a Wendy house, static games, a work table, music, colour, and lots more, giving the children real stimulation, truly a playgroup for playing and learning. As I got used to this warming friendly environment the children began to get acquainted with this tall gentleman around them and soon began telling me about their toys, and what they were up to. The quality of the large static play things was most impressive, including a kitchen set-up and a huge floor based unit (pictured below) including tracks, cars and many more things to keep the children happy. A large Wendy house was there for on an attractive carpeted area as well.

Ann Stewart pictured here in the garden area is keen to continually improve much about the group. Currently the centre is available from 9am to 3pm with flexible sessions during term time. However the future plans are very appealing indeed. With more and more parents working long hours in this ever growing society there is a proposal to extend the centre opening times from 8am to 6pm four days a week. These times will suit many and more children could enjoy the group currently up to a maximum of twenty per session.
Another comparatively new initiative is called 'Finding a Voice'. Help your child to experiment explore and use sound to develop their communication skills in a fun session with lots of singing and moving to music. In this session parents, grandparents are welcomed and you can make new friends too. Epworth surely has one tremendous facility in this Pre-School Playgroup. Why don't you pay them a visit and have a look for yourself. When you contact the group to visit or obtain further details you will get a warm greeting. There are phone and email contacts you can use to get all details. Telephone 01427 875016 Email: epworththurlowplaygroup@hotmail.co.uk There is a comprehensive website where much more information can be found such as: Sessions - Times & Fees - Government Funding - News & Events - Maps - Charity and Ofsted details. Website: www.epworththurlow.co.uk I enjoyed meeting everyone at the playgroup and loved every minute I was there, I'm sure both you and your children will too. Anthony Catherall January 2016.

YOUR COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDER TEAM NEEDS YOU! As we are in another New Year the Community First Responder (CFR) team that operates in Misterton and surrounding villages is always seeking more volunteers to be in trained in life-saving skills during the coming year. CFR volunteers help to save lives in their local communities throughout the East Midlands and across the UK as a whole. They can provide life-saving care if the patient's condition is serious and give reassurance to patients and family prior to the arrival of the ambulance and cover the villages of Misterton, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, West Stockwith, Walkeringham, Clayworth, Everton, Mattersey and nearby areas. The responders gain confidence, skills, knowledge and new friends through their local scheme and volunteering can be flexible to work around the individual. Full training is provided by East Midlands Ambulance Service, including use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) and resuscitation, oxygen therapy and airway management, and caring for patients suffering from conditions such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, strokes, fits, collapse and cardiac arrest. Community First Responders come from all different walks of life and volunteer for many different reasons. Potential CFR’s need to have a caring attitude, be aged over 18 years, with a full clean driving licence and access to a car and live within Misterton or one of the surrounding villages. Full enhanced criminal records bureau checks are carried out on all CFR’s prior to commencing training. Five Villages First Responders team need more volunteers now. Could you make a new year’s resolution to help members of your community in their time of need? If you are interested in finding out more information with a view to volunteering as a CFR, then please get in touch on 01427 848707, e-mail contact@fvfr.co.uk or visit the website for more information www.fvfr.co.uk. 999 – Where Are You? THE Community First Responder team are also encouraging local people to ensure that their houses can be found easily and quickly should they have to call 999. Because the team respond locally in the areas where we live and work, they often arrive within the first few minutes following the 999 call being made. They can normally find the road where the incident is located easily, but the biggest problem that is often faced is actually finding the correct house. This can mean vital minutes are wasted. It’s even worse where houses only have names and not numbers, as often time is spent having to search the entire street before the correct property is located. Here are some handy tips so that emergency services can find you quickly and help you after you have called 999… 1. Make sure your house number is large enough to be seen from the road side. If you cannot see it from the street, the emergency services may not be able to either. 2. If possible place your house name and number on a wall or a gate post next to the road rather than on the door. Ensure that your house name and/or number stand out – especially at night. Put as many lights on as possible including car hazard lights. 3. If you have to call 999 in an emergency – if possible get someone to stand outside the house to watch out for help arriving and to flag them down. The slogan, ‘before we can help you we have to find you’ certainly applies’.

The children (and staff) have come back to school full of energy for the new term. As a 'thank you' and well done to the children for their hard work they were treated to a pantomime in the form of the tale of Pinocchio. The tale of Gepetto creating the wooden puppet, who wanted to become a real boy captured the imagination of the children who thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They were also treated to an ice cream after the performance. With great thanks to the PTFA for their contribution to the cost of the pantomime and snacks. This last month also saw the children celebrate all things from the other side of the channel on our 'French day'. Pupils were encouraged to wear clothing in the colours of the Tricolour, the flag of France. The school certainly looked vibrant with dash of colour instead of their usual uniforms. Workshops were held on speaking French, the cuisine of the country, and various craft activities. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and it was a great end to the first week of term. February also sees the celebration of Candlemas, with our annual visit for this occasion to St Nicholas Church. Candlemas is a 'celebration of light' and is the day when all church candles for the year are blessed. It is also the mid point between winter and the Spring Equinox, and as legend has it..'If Candlemas Day be fair and bright, winter will have another fight. If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, winter won't come again'. Looking at the current weather forecast I think you'll agree we'll need out 'winter woolies' for a little bit longer! The school council are currently meeting to decide how the children will be raising money for Sports Relief, an organisation that helps those less fortunate than ourselves at home and abroad. As a Christian school this is one of the things we really support, and believe it is of educational and moral value to the children. Ideas on the drawing board include the sale of wrist bands, a cake sale and a mini triathlon. Whatever they decide, your help and support will be much appreciated.
