Not long til half tern again! I will be visiting Yorkshire Wildlife Park to try and get a glimpse of the painted dog puppies. It’s a great family day out and a credit to Doncaster! Really puts the town on the map! Take a trip down with the kids, I’m sure you wont be disappointed! Also great fun for the kids is Airkings Trampoline Park in Doncaster and Scunthorpe. Ninjakings, the first Ninja assault course has just opened in Doncaster and is sure to be a big hit. Set yourself the challenge and beat the 12ft warped wall! For the little ones don’t forget Maize Maize and the little farmers every Mondays and Thursdays. THANK YOU FROM WESLEY MEMORIAL CHURCH Many thanks to all who contributed to our collection over the Christmas period. We raised £209.37 which will be divided between the Red Cross and the Methodist Church’s fund for relief in Haiti after last year’s hurricane. We had no idea how appropriate the latter fund would be when we chose it back in November, nor how poignant the scene of the homeless Mary, Joseph and Jesus wold become the night that Storm Barbara rolled through Epworth. We were sitting in the manse listening to the wind rattle the branches of the trees when we realised that rain had begun, not just to fall, but to hammer against the windows. The direction of the rain meant that it would also be coming straight in through the open door of the Holy Family’s refugee tent. Being made only of papier mache we thought they should be rescued from their predicament and we managed to get them inside the church. The tent, however, did not survive the night and I was still finding some of the pictures of homelessness we had put up around it in the gardens some days later. But, what more challenging a way could there have been to really make us think hard about the realities of homelessness for so many people across the world & in particular those sleeping rough in nearby Scunthorpe and Doncaster on that same night. It certainly gave an added focus to our prayers and to many of our decisions about how we can practically help try to make things better. On the note of practical help I also want to say thank you to whoever it was who left a small basket of food and gifts for Mary and Joseph underneath the manger in the tent. It was an unexpected surprise. The food has gone to the foodbank at the Baptist Church and the candles were sold to a member of the congregation who put a donation into the collection bucket. Thank you again, whoever you are, for your practical response. Blessings, Angy Long (Minister; Wesley Memorial Methodist Church.)

THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall

August 1st. I wonder what August will bring? Will Italy pack up or fight on. I think we shall know our fate this month. Very hot these days. There is a dance on tonight. No parcels in. Aug. 2nd. -3rd.The camp has got a play. Jolly good, it is called The Best Laid Plans. Every one praised it, it really was marvellous the way it was got up and played. A chap made it up. The stage was a sight to see. Settee and chairs made out of plywood, (From Canadian Red Cross boxes). Lulu and Happy had big parts. For an hour and a half, it made one forget that he was a POW. Aug. 4th. Soap issues. The Ities have stopped the daily paper coming in; but! Sunday I have had a letter from you today dear, not often we get them on Sundays. Another lovely day another dance on tonight. It’s funny how our memories have gone while being a POW. Mine always was bad, but it’s awful now. Most who I talk to are the same, such as remembering names of people and places, and other things that crop up. I guess you had a proud mother look when Julie was doing her stuff at the Anniversary, yes darling how I wish I could have been there let’s hope. Please God I’ll see her next year. Goodnight my loving darling. Aug. 11th. 12. Mid-day, very hot, wash shorts, socks, and towel this morning. Have started sleeping outside now, it’s so hot and stuffy inside. Got some planks on bricks in-between the huts; it’s OK, also not so many fleas. Keep missing cheese issue now. Aug. 12th. Our hut has concert, pay 4 lire each money to buy new instruments. Aug. 13th. A good day for us, first formations of our bombers pass over the camp, we have heard them before, but that’s the first we have seen, a jolly good sight for sore eyes. We all were staring up to the sky and causing a commotion. Extra guards were put on, and machine guns were manned round the camp. I don’t know what they thought we could do about it. A good news bulletin. Two letters from you darling. Play Tenner quoits at night. We are going to have a tournament; Len is to be my partner. Aug.14th. Thousands on bomber raid over Malon (Milan). Rome also bombed again. A jolly good concert tonight, it really is marvellous how they all get up. There has been a competition for the naming of the hut where we have the concert. It is now called THE CLIMAX Aug.15th. Eight years ago today, Dad died; poor old mum will be feeling the loneliness just now, how awful it must be to lose your partner. Aug. 16th. 20 men come back from the aluminium job, which went out some time ago, they refused to work, and have been in jail, they look very thin and pale. Aug. 17th. More workers go out, about 70 at 5am. I am glad I’m not working in this heat, it would get me down. News is still good. Aug. 18th. Len and I lose 2 points to nil in first quoits match. Les gets his first cig parcel. Two letters, one from Muriel and Myrtle. (Sister and Sister-in-law) Getting a good few books to read these days, but none have come for me yet. Aug.19th. Five more men come back, they had been labouring, (not enough food) Aug. 20th. The paper says Sicily is finished. Big meeting in Quebec with all our big noises. Half the camp thinks Italy won’t be invaded. What a disappointment it will be for us if it isn’t, we had hopes of being home for Xmas. Aug. 21st. Lights go out most nights now between 11pm and 12pm because of raids. Aug. 22nd. One point each in 2nd match of Tenner Quoits Aug. 23rd. Win 3rd match, 2 points top. Parcels are coming in all right. All the tins are stabbed, and a lot of it goes bad before it can be eaten. All cigs are taken out of the packets, those from next of kin too. Must think they are going to find maps, or maybe a gun! One hut per day is searched, ours was the one today, and all they got was a knife and a file. Still sleeping outside, lovely nights. The days are too hot to be pleasant. One fig issues each. Every Sunday morning a party of RC’s goes to the next compound for a service. Toour advertise please call 01302 532676 15 When in the wire, one desire, is to forget our sorrows, until or 07912 643010 one day, you will hear them say, you’re going home tomorrow TO BE CONTINUED NEXT MONTH

The Isle of Axholme Supporter Group of Lindsey Lodge Hospice are wanting more volunteers to help raise funds for this most valuable resource for those with life limiting illnesses. For more information please contact Louise Wright 01724 710664 thankyou.

This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 24 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Once again we will be putting together a daytime programme across 10 outdoor stages – with indoor alternatives if it is wet – and 3 indoor venues. There will be evening concerts in St Andrew’s Church and the Queen’s Head.

Continuing 2017 with another full programme of events and speakers:

Last June we attracted nearly 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2017. We already have had expressions of interest from 25 groups who want to play.

Misterton News NOMINATIONS FOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR SOUGHT Every year, two residents of Misterton are commended for their contribution to village life in Misterton Parish Council’s Citizen of the Year awards. The Parish Council is looking for nominations to the two awards: one for under 18s, the other for those over 18. The awards will recognise the nominees’ special efforts made during 2016 on behalf of the community. The closing date for nominations is Friday 31 March. Councillors will discuss the nominations at the April meeting of the Parish Council with the awards presented at the annual meeting in May. Send nominations to the Clerk to the Parish Council, The Misterton Centre, 31 High Street, Misterton DN10 4BU, or e-mail: theclerk@misterton-notts-pc.gov.uk.

BASSETLAW COUNCIL ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR ACHIEVERS Bassetlaw District Council is making its annual achievers’ awards in March and is seeking nominations of those who have served the community by their efforts for charity, for individual achievements, for sport or group activities, or who have overcome adversity to lead a normal life. If there’s anyone worthy of an award, please contact District Cllr Hazel Brand via The Misterton Centre with suggestions. Information on Misterton Parish Council’s Citizen of the Year awards will be publicised after January’s Parish Council meeting.

This lovely boy is Zeus, a 2 year old Whippet Cross. Zeus is such a friendly, affectionate, loving boy who adores people, and is so well behaved at the rescue – and good on the lead. He is great with other dogs, so could happily share his home. Sadly he doesn’t get on with cats. Zeus is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Unfortunately because of his colour, Zeus is often overlooked in favour of other dogs, and he really deserves a lovely home. If you would like to come and meet this smashing boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

All Saints’ Parish Church was packed to full capacity for the annual village Carols by Candlelight service. Representatives of groups and organisations in the village took part. A collection was taken for the Church’s 1875 pipe organ, which needs £2500-worth of immediate repairs and a full overhaul of the largely original instrument. The Carol Service was followed by a Christmas Concert by the Idle Missedatones, playing a selection of seasonal favourites from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons to Anderson’s Sleigh Ride - with audience participation. .

PARISH CHURCH’S RESIDENT ORGANIST CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF PLAYING – AND BUYS HER OWN! Fiona Law is the resident organist at All Saints’ Parish Church in Misterton and loves playing a church organ, especially visiting different churches to play their organs, and she long had an ambition to own an organ. But when she began researching prices, she thought it would be something to put on the back burner and dream of for the future. However, last year she found herself browsing on eBay and spotted an advert: Church organ. In need of some repair but still used for services. Buyer to collect from Port Talbot, Wales. She placed a ridiculously low bid and thought no more about it. Three days later, just before setting out to play at a service, she checked her e-mails. There was a message from eBay: “Congratulations, you are the highest bidder and have won the church organ”. Fiona, a music teacher with a penchant for collecting instruments, takes up the story: “I felt a rush of excitement and panic – where would I put it? How would I get it to Misterton? How do I sneak it into the house with no one noticing? That evening, I brought up the subject with my husband, David: ‘Err, I’ve bought another instrument. It’s actually a church organ!’ He just laughed, thought it was fantastic, and planned to hire a van, collect it, and make a weekend of it!” The following weekend saw them off to Wales in a van with one of their sons. They had arranged to meet one of the churchwardens at St David’s Church in the parish of Margam, Port Talbot. The organ was everything Fiona had hoped for. It looked in good condition and, even though a few stops didn’t work, most of it was fantastic and it had a lovely sound. The last service the organ had been used for was Remembrance Sunday. A team of church members was summoned to help load the organ into the van. Once the organ was safely aboard, they said their goodbyes and drove inland to Merthyr Tydfil where they stayed overnight. The next morning saw the first slight snowfall of last winter. They decided to visit Aberfan on the way home, only four miles away. It was four weeks after the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, which killed 116 schoolchildren and 28 adults. In October, many Welsh churches had held memorial services. Fiona wondered if her organ was played at one of these. Fiona picks up the story again: “We arrived safely back in Misterton after a 480-mile round trip, but really our journey had only just begun. We now had the task of carrying the organ 20 metres into our house. We were just about to summon up some help when a passer by offered to help. A joiner by trade and very handy, he was very optimistic about us getting the organ in without having to dismantle it. Thanks to him, within a few minutes, we had it safely installed in the lounge and it fitted in the space I had planned with an inch to spare. My son and I fastened the pedal board in place and with great trepidation, I plugged it in and flicked the start switch. I pressed a key and the organ sprang into life, filling our lounge with the sweet sound of a merry organ! “We had a great weekend full of exciting (and emotional) moments and purchased the bargain of a lifetime. And I know this might sound sentimental, but I occasionally play a good old Welsh hymn tune or two to make my organ feel at home!”

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School The school has some exciting news - we are now part of the Trentside Federation along with St Martin's School at Owston Ferry, and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School. This does not mean that we have merged, it means that the partnership we have shared since April 2015 continues with the appointment of Mrs J. Buckle as our permanent head teacher across the 3 sites. A new governing body will be formed from existing governors, along with any applicants for the parent governor role. We hope that pupils, parents and carers will bear with us throughout this process, but please remember that the governors are there for everyone from each of the 3 schools, which are equally important. Schools will keep their individuality, and also their uniforms. It is very much business as usual for each school, however if you have any concerns please get in touch with the school office to arrange an appointment to speak with Mrs Buckle, or a member of the governing body. Since returning from the Christmas break, the children have been treated to all sorts of exciting events. The children had a pantomime visit from a local theatre group. The performance was the classic 'Aladdin', which saw the school hall transformed into a theatre for an afternoon. The children were toe tapping and singing along to the songs from the show, and it was enjoyed by all. We would like to thank the PTFA for assisting with funding the pantomime, and for also organising and providing choc ices for each child. A special assembly was held just before the Haxey Hood - which was on Friday 6th January as per tradition! As chief Boggin, Phil Palmer brought along the rest of the boggins who explained the origins of the game, the significance of the clothing they wear and the hood itself. The boggins sang traditional Hood songs to the children who enjoyed the visit very much. The children were delighted to get hold of the actual hood itself. We would like to extend our thanks to the Boggins DESIGN-PLANNING-CONSTRUCTION and the wonderful people of our community who FENCING. PONDS. TURFING help organise the Hood each year, which raises DECKING. PAVING. DRIVEWAYS hundred of pounds for local causes. As the Arrow goes to press, our school choir will be at the annual 'Young Voices' at Sheffield Arena, along with our neighbour's at Westwoodside Church of England Academy. Young Voices is the largest school choir concert in the world, and sees schools unite to perform to capacity audiences of family and friends. It combines the power of singing alongside musicians and artists creating a breathtaking performance. The choir have been practicing at school with Mrs Jenman, and no doubt there will be a repeat performance of last year's successful trip. Watch out in the next issue for photographs.
