House burglaries have featured over the last few months as the dark nights have set in and in particular vacant properties have been targeted. This may be due to occupants being on holiday or homes where elderly residents have gone into respite care or permanently relocated to assisted living. Whilst we do not want to concern residents, we would like to remind everyone of some basic home security measures which can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of burglary. The most likely entry point for a burglar is via the rear so do not neglect security there. Fit an alarm or a dummy alarm box. Many people point out that when an alarm sounds nobody takes any notice these days. The burglar will though. Install a security light which works on a movement sensor to light up areas which a burglar may use for cover. Use timer switches to turn lights on when you are not in. Ensure any gates at the rear are locked, not just with a bolt near the top which can be opened by reaching over. Thieves do not want to be seen and surveillance is often provided by neighbours who live opposite or who overlook your property. Do not allow bushes and hedges to grow too high. Consider the security on your shed. Is it proportionate to the value of items you keep inside such as cycles and garden equipment? e.g. an expensive cycle stored in a wooden shed with only a £2.50 padlock for security. It is also worth noting that a burglar will sometimes use an item which is easily taken from a poorly secured shed to facilitate their entry into a house. Fit trellis along the top of fencing at the rear as this will break if a burglar tries to climb over your fence. Spiky / prickly bushes and climbers are also a deterrent. Report all suspicious circumstances. Door-to-door salesman appertaining to be selling energy or double-glazing are often checking out and planning future burglaries or even trying their luck there and then if they get no reply to knocking. In rural communities, local residents know when someone or something looks out of place far more than in urban areas. Join your local Neighbourhood Watch Group or start one up yourself. The role of co-ordinator does not have to be a burdensome role and your group can be as small or large as you wish. In effect the key role of a NHW co-ordinator is to act as a conduit for police information which in today’s world is literally the touch of a button. The vital part is that police have that single point of contact in as many areas as possible. NHW is proven to reduce and prevent crime and it is an initiative well suited to rural communities where traditional community spirit still exists. We would also ask for your assistance in keeping an eye on any properties where you know the occupants are away or out for whatever length of time. Our intelligence suggests that the offenders are ‘doing their homework’ in identifying properties from which to steal. If you see any suspicious activity then please call 999 if you believe a crime is about to be committed or 101 if you noted suspicious activity which has now passed. If you are able to get descriptions of persons or vehicle details without putting yourself in any danger, then that would be valuable information. Axholme Neighbourhood Policing Team

David Felton is a paramedic with the East Midlands Ambulance Service and as run a 5k everyday. “I have run 5k every day

for a year, sometimes even after working 12-14 hour shifts. Helping me lose my belly but more importantly to raise money for Lex’s Legacy, specifically for a local young boy called Harry who is a lovely kid with a serious health issue. My final run was on the 2nd January 2019 in Central Park, Scunthorpe, where I was joined by friends, family and colleagues.” If you would like to sponsor David his just giving page is www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/david-felton1 or pop him an email of support to david.felton2015@gmail.com

Pride of the Isle We began supporting Harry when he was 16 months old, he has struggled with seizures since 5 days old, he also suffers with respiratory complications. He has Todd’s Paresis which leaves him paralysed on his left hand side following the seizures and he has external Hydrocephalus amongst other complications. Harry recently had his NG tube replaced in Sheffield Children’s hospital to have a Gastronomy tube inserted where he is topped up with prescribed milk as he struggles some days to take anything orally and medications. Harry has struggled to meet his developmental milestones throughout, and has failed to thrive in areas that we take for granted. Harry has been having private physio to support his development. Recently at 21 months old after many tests Harry’s parents have been given a diagnosis after chromosome testing showed that he has duplicated 15q11.2 chromosomes. This not only means that they have an answer as to why Harry struggles as he does but also unfortunately means the diagnosis is life long for little Harry and he will progressively become worse, with risks of future complications for him being greater. The daily routine of appointments, feeding pumps, medications and caring for Harry’s needs has been lifechanging for the family, but big brother Kian (7) has been incredible throughout. The family struggle to find routine with the volatility of the seizures and recovery time amongst all of the other medical needs Harry has. A simple day out can take hours of preparation. With the diagnosis comes the need for more equipment and support which sadly isn’t provided on the NHS, the family are desperately wanting to provide Harry with the most comfortable life as possible, as are we as a charity.

Quirkus Exhibition at The Point

Quirky Choir celebrates an amazing 20th year with a new exhibition and film Quirky Choir was set up as part of the launch of The Point twenty years ago. The group has gone from strength to strength, singing a huge variety of songs from around the world in all manner of venues across Doncaster and beyond. Thanks to Arts Council funding, the choir’s twentieth year has been spent creating a whole new repertoire of song in collaboration with some extremely talented artists and community groups. Musicians Hayley Youell, Lucky Moyo, Luke Carver Goss and wordsmith Ian McMillian joined the choir along with Creative Directions, Swag Choir, Doncaster Conversation Club and Singing for Memory to write new pieces that relate directly to the people involved. Photographer James Mulkeen has been documenting the project, and filmmaker James Lockey has created a fascinating film exploring the journey of Quirky Choir and what singing with the choir means to its members. The project has given Quirky Choir members a chance to think about their own journeys over the last twenty years and how much has changed locally and globally. The new exhibition will be shown at The Point – home of darts (Doncaster Community Arts) – from 12th January to 23rd February. Gallery opening times and visitor information can be found here: https://www.thepoint.org.uk/visit/ Entry to the exhibition is free and open to all. Janet Wood has been leading the Quirky Choir since it began. She said: “We are a choir with a difference – there are no auditions and we are open to all. We believe that everyone can sing and that singing can have huge benefits for people’s health and wellbeing. This project has been a fantastic opportunity for us to really celebrate everything we have achieved over the past twenty years. We have had so much fun working with some amazing artists and groups and creating songs that are totally different to anything we have done before.” Quirky Choir will round off their year of celebration with a concert at The Dome on Sunday 10th March at 7pm. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact darts (Doncaster Community Arts) for further information – 01302 341662.

Make 2019, YOUR year to volunteer at Bransby Horses! Local equine charity, Bransby Horses, located just eight miles from the town centre of Lincoln, has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming equines in need for the past five decades. Bransby Horses totally relies on public support and donations, and many functions of the charity wouldn’t be possible without your volunteer input. Bransby Horses is seeking additional volunteers to join its team in 2019 to help throughout the charity. Equine experience is not essential as there are many voluntary roles that do not require previous experience of working with horses, however a passion for making a difference and enthusiasm is essential! Volunteering at Bransby Horses will see you become one of the team and by contributing your time, you are directly helping towards the charities work of improving equines lives. Volunteering also gives the opportunity to meet a variety of new people from the dedicated supporters and fellow volunteers. All new volunteers will receive the relevant training and will have support from friendly staff and the Volunteer Co-ordinator. For more information about how to become a volunteer, please see our website www.bransbyhorses.co.uk or email our Volunteer Co-ordinator on volunteer@bransbyhorses.co.uk For further information please contact Bransby Horses on 01427 788464 or visit www.bransbyhorses.co.uk. .

A banquet was the description of the supper which concluded the Christmas meeting of the Epworth and District Flower Club. The evening began with a welcome to all and a brief summary of the Open Meeting held in November. Anne Everatt thanked everyone for their support of what had been a very successful event, both financial and enjoyable. The details will be formalised at the AGM and a cheque to the Alzheimer’s will be presented. The workshop evening then began. The tables had been covered in Christmas coloured protective cloths and all of the 22 members in attendance had a large glittery twig ring, a plastic plate, a container with biodegradable oasis in front of them and a bag of necessary “goodies”. The demonstrator produced her ring and began to position a variety of evergreen conifer foliage using some for height and some descending to cover the mechanics. She then added artificial pompom chrysanthemums and several silver snowflakes and baubles. This demonstrator provides everything and soon we all had foliage, glitter spray, baubles and leaves at our disposal. To complete our arrangements we could choose as much sparkle as we wished and we learnt one or two tricks for inserting baubles to good effect. It was a lovely informal Christmas workshop and everyone had time to chat before and during the enjoyment of the refreshments mentioned above. There was an opportunity to purchase decorations remaining from the sales table at the open meeting and members left with their arrangements discussing what real flowers they would add as Christmas arrives. The January meeting is a meal at the Epworth Tap on Thursday 17th and the AGM will be held in the usual venue of the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey at 7.30 pm on Monday, 11th February. At the meeting we display the scrapbooks of activities over the years. Come along and see what we do.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club walk the 1st or 2nd Sunday in every month and we welcome new members. We are not a competitive bunch and our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside. All our walks are led by experienced leaders and we offer two each month, one of around 8 miles or a slightly longer one of 11 to 13 miles. We set off from Waterdale in Doncaster by private coach and travel to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District or other equally lovely places. On 9th December we enjoyed a moderate walk in North Nottinghamshire and as is our Christmas tradition our walk was followed by a carvery at The Boat Inn at Hayton. If you fancy joining us, our January walk takes place on the 13th and we will be walking from Harewood to Otley. If you can't make it in January why not join us on 10th February when we are off to The Peak District. It`s a great way to meet like-minded people, enjoy our countryside and get a little bit fitter at the same time!

Misterton Community News FIND A CHRISTMAS ANGEL If you have walked around Misterton, you might have seen little knitted angels placed around the village. Hanging from trees, on gates, in all sorts of places: 220 of them. They have been knitted by women (and friends) from Misterton Methodist Chapel and All Saints’ Parish Church and each one carries a message of hope. Hopefully if you did see one you took it. If you’d like to, leave a photo of it on All Saints’ Parish Church’s Facebook page - and let’s see if we can collect photos of all of them! FOOD BANK BENEFITS FROM ADVENT GENEROSITY There’s been a fantastic response to Misterton Parish Church’s ‘Reverse Advent’ appeal. Instead of giving up something for Advent, which is traditional, the Church has encouraged people to give to Bassetlaw Food Bank. Numbered paper bags were placed around the Church for people to drop in their donations. In all, 31 bags of provisions were taken to Bassetlaw Food Bank – many more than the 24 days of Advent so many thanks to all who donated and to Pat Henson for coming up with the idea.

As 2018 came to a close, the total number of bags of provisions taken to the Food Bank from Misterton and neighbouring villages, since the churches started supporting this worthy cause, is over now 2300. FREE FRUIT FOR CHILDREN Misterton Co-op is again offering free fruit to its junior members, who should receive their ‘fruitastic card’ through the post any day now. Anyone under 15 wanting to sign up as a junior member should contact the Co-op’s membership team on 01522 781 135 or e-mail https:// junior.lincolnshire.coop/login/signup. The free fruit offer runs until Saturday 23 February. CAROL SERVICE THANKS What a great way to lead into the last week before Christmas! Many thanks to all who came to the village service (16 December) - and special thanks to those who read lessons: representatives of Misterton Primary School, the Methodist and Parish Churches, businesses in Misterton, the Parish and District Councils, Misterton Girlguiding, and Bassetlaw & Bawtry Deanery. A truly community event!

Misterton Community News WANT TO GET OUT BUT PUBLIC TRANSPORT’S DIFFICULT? If you want to get out and about but have difficulty using public transport, then Car Scheme Plus could be the answer. A vehicle has been fully adapted for wheelchair users and offers a door-to-door service for people of all ages. It is fitted with a Turney Seat that comes right out of the car, enabling the passenger to sit on and be lifted into the vehicle. This is particularly useful for people with limited mobility. The vehicle is also able to carry up to three passengers. You must register with Car Scheme Plus at Bassetlaw Action Centre to be eligible to use this service. There is currently a £20 fee to register for one year. We recommend booking early and a quotation will be given for the cost of the journey on request. For more information, contact Rachel Shaw at Bassetlaw Action Centre on 01777 709650 or e-mail rshaw@actioncentre.org.uk. The Misterton Centre & Library is affiliated to BAC, so information is also available there (tel 890646).

PLANNING APPLICATION WITHDRAWN The planning application for 60 houses and amenities on land off Grovewood Road (18/01297/OUT) was withdrawn from the meeting of Bassetlaw's Planning Committee (9 January). The planning officer had recommended refusal and it would have been unlikely that the members voted against that recommendation as:

 BDC has land supply for dwellings greater than the 5 years required by law  it was not one of the Neighbourhood Plan’s preferred sites  the development is outside the village boundary  offered in the application were community facilities, which the village already has  Misterton Parish Council and Misterton Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group both objected to the application. The application may be revised and re-submitted.
