It was a busy end to 2019 at Haxey Primary School ‐ we had Christmas lunch, Christmas jumper day and everybody got to visit Santa and his elves in Santa's Gro o ‐ a huge thank you to our wonderful PTFA for organising that treat for us! Our Founda on Stage and Key Stage One children put on a fantas c produc on of "Whoops a Daisy Angel", with lots of great singing, dancing and some wonderful performances from our Year 2 children, who had lots of lines to learn. Everyone did an amazing job, despite lots of us feeling poorly ‐ it really was a case of the show must go on! The dancing snowflakes and singing sheep really got everyone in the fes ve spirit! Our Year 5 and 6 children also worked hard right up to the very end of term to give us a panto to remember ‐ their version of "Cinderella Rockerfella" brought the house down at every performance! To wrap up the term, we had a very special Haxey Hood visit from the new Fool and some of the Boggins, who shared the story of Lady Mowbray with us, sang some of the tradi onal Hood songs and answered our many ques ons about the history behind this fantas c day. Finally, our tradi onal Christmas Service at St Nicholas Church reminded us of the true meaning of Christmas and bought our school family together for one more me before the holidays. We're now looking forward to an equally ac on packed start to the New Year! Photographs courtesy of The Wonderful Years Photography.

VICAR HAS A RESOUNDING SEND-OFF! The Parish Church was packed with regular worshippers from across the Oswaldbeck Benefice, as well as numerous well-wishers, from the villages for Rev David Henson's last service in December before retirement.

The hymns chosen were among David's favourites; readers represented some of the other parishes. All the parishes had contributed to leaving presents: David is a steam train buff - so he was given vouchers for a North Yorks Moors Railway steam train driving experience and a specialty meal for two aboard one of the trains. David is pictured receiving it with his wife, Pat, and (left) Churchwarden Emeritus Brenda Marsden, and Churchwarden Sue Pearce. This was followed up by a gift of ÂŁ757 to buy something special for his and Pat's new home. Thanks to all who gave David such a super send-off!

Westwoodside Church of England Primary Academy Creswell Crags, a Place in History Creswell Crags, ever been there? If not, we’ll tell you all about our recent visit there. As part of our Autumn topic, Years 3, 4 and 5 were investigating the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. In school we had learnt all sorts about what life was like and how it changed through those periods of history. To explore further, we had a day trip to Creswell Crags. Creswell Crags is a place where people lived during the Stone Age, with evidence of this in the museum and outside in the caves. We found out what life would have been like, living in the caves. A guide, dressed in reindeer skins took us into one of the caves and we talked about how people would’ve lived in there and why they may have chosen that cave. We found out that people could’ve made music and how they may have made instruments. We even saw where original cave paintings were.

Another activity that we did was focussing on survival skills. We worked in teams to try to build a tepee style den and to try to create smoke to start a fire. Then we worked in pairs to try to throw spears (we had the flints removed to be safe!) at pretend cattle. The final activity was recreating ancient art. We used paints, feathers and rocks such as flint and chalk as well as charcoal to create paintings of animals, Stone Age symbols and patterns. Despite it being a very cold day, we really enjoyed our visit to Creswell Crags. We thought that the guides that we had for each activity were helpful and very knowledgeable. The trip helped us to understand how life really would have been so many years ago and how much we have changed. By 3/4DT Thunberg and 4/5T Attenborough classes

Epworth and District Flower Club Christmas Workshop 2019 On arrival 25 ladies were greeted with most of the materials necessary to produce a wonderful Christmas creation, but there was a little business to be completed first. The meeting was formally opened with a welcome from Anne Everatt who thanked everyone for their support of the November Open Evening. That meeting had been financially successful enabling the Club to donate to Diabetes UK but it had also been much enjoyed by all who supported it. The programme secretary, Carolyn Drury, was delighted to report that Nick Grounds the demonstrator had thoroughly enjoyed the evening too and had actually written to thank the Club for the help received and the efficient organisation of the evening. The introduction to the workshop began. Sarah produced a very long-stemmed amaryllis in quite tight bud. She showed her audience how to chop the stem to a suitable length, then she slotted it onto a stick which she had positioned in some oasis in a plastic-lined decorative container. Sarah worked to cover the mechanics with looped aspidistra leaves, tight, small conifer branches, prickly holly twigs and some skimmia. She opened a gold lacey wired flower which produced some gasps of amazement and placed it to make a focal point below the amaryllis. Next were carefully place six red carnations, frosted berries, glittery red baubles which Sarah attached onto sticks, more gold leaves and Sarah concluded her arrangement with Christmassy ribbon artistically looped over and around. Job Done!! Then it was up to members to produce something similar! Sarah was on hand to assist and produce suitable tools and give gentle tips and hints. There was the usual buzz of conversation as 24 more similar, but individual, arrangements were created. Sarah manages to enable both skilled and unskilled flower arrangers to achieve a satisfying result in her workshops which encourages everyone. She also provides everything necessary which means the evening runs very smoothly. The messy bits were then cleared away and 25 lovely Christmas table arrangements provided a backdrop for the seasonal refreshments which were enjoyed by all. The social aspect of the evening continued later than usual and members eventually went out into a frosty night bearing an arrangement fit to start the season. The January meeting is a meal at The Epworth Tap and the next meeting is the A.G.M. which will be held at 7.30 in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey on Monday, 10th February 2020. Do come and join us.

Fishlake Flooding News After the devastation of the floods on Friday 8 November 2019 which saw around 80% of properties in the village affected it has obviously been a very difficult time for all concerned. We have seen a visit from The Prime Minister, HRH The Prince of Wales and also received coverage from lots of local and national media. We are proud as a community of how we have pulled together and supported each other and we will continue to do so. We are hugely grateful for the support shown to us by neighbouring villages and we are overwhelmed by the number of message of support received from across the country. There is still a long way to go before we are anything like back to normal. We need to persist with information as to how and why this happened and to work to prevent this happening again. St Cuthbert's Church, The Old Butcher's CafĂŠ and the Hare and Hounds have all done a tremendous job supporting the community and the essential/emergency workers who visited the village. Thoughts are very much with those residents who are still unable to return to their homes. Truffle Lodge reopened for business on Monday 6 January 2020. Our Day Spa package is from 10 am until 4 pm ÂŁ85 pp and includes a 2 course lunch, glass of fizz, a 60 mins treatment and full use of leisure facilities. Available 7 days a week. Our Twilight Spa package is from 6pm to 9 pm, ÂŁ45 pp and includes a 30 mins treatment glass of fizz and nibbles and full use of leisure facilities available Monday to Friday. Further details contact Pam on 07525 844041 or visit www.trufflelodge.co.uk
