Welcome to the February issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow.
Not the start we expected in 2021! As I am writing this editorial I am knee deep in snow with temperatures of minus 5 whilst temperatures further up North dropping to minus 11. Speaking to people in the Isle, I believe the snow hasn't arrived! Whilst the snowy scenes outside are beautiful, the roads are icy and treacherous. Please ensure you drive carefully. With the introduction of lockdown 3, ensure you keep safe. The vaccines are well under way. I was pleased to see my mum of 90 years old receiving her first vaccine this week. The NHS have done us all proud. The whole procedure of booking your vaccines to attending was very well organised. A massive project to see millions in the UK receiving their vaccines over the next few months. We applaud you NHS! It was great to see the Christmas gift appeal do so well. A big well done to Abbie and her helpers on ensuring children in need received a gift. A thank you message is on page 14. I would love to receive any good news from the local community; maybe some planned zoom meeting for your organisations; a special birthday or anything you would like to share with your local community.

Owston Ferry Community Group The annual Over 65’s Christmas Tea was unable to take place in its usual format due to the Covid-19 restrictions so the group decided to make this a take away/delivery option to ensure that nobody missed out at a time when many people are continuing to stay at home and are at risk of increased isolation. The group were inundated with orders and 140+ people in Owston Ferry received a three course meal on Saturday 12th December along with a party bag. Each resident also received a personalised Christmas card from pupils at St Martins C of E primary school. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with some residents stating that “the meal was lovely and the attention to detail was thoughtful” “thankyou from the bottom of my heart, you have made my Christmas” The group received some funding from the Consolidated Charities committee, crackers were donated by Maria Maith and Rita Temperton gave her considerable skill and expertise in making the delicious desserts. The Community Group are a small voluntary committee who aim to enhance the lives of all residents of Owston Ferry throughout the year.

Along with everyone, the group are hoping that restrictions will ease at some point in the new year to enable them to continue their fundraising efforts in readiness for further events. If anyone is interested in being involved in the group in the future, please contact Alison Woodcock 07851 769806

Wildlife and Rural Crime Humberside Police are committed to the policing of Wildlife and Rural Crime. We have trained 60 Wildlife Crime Officers (WCOs) who, along with their normal duties, volunteer to investigate and provide advice in relation to wildlife offences. WCOs are specially trained in investigating crimes against wildlife. They will either assist other police officers or take the lead role in the investigation of the more intricate cases, and can also provide advice to colleagues & members of the public. WCOs are able to provide support and advice in relation to Wildlife & Rural Crime, and have a personal interest in this type of work. The Force has now held three National Wildlife Crime courses over the past three years delivered by Craig Fellows. Craig is an expert in the field and delivers the training across the UK. With 60 officers having completed the course we have one of the highest numbers of staff trained, if not the highest in England and Wales. Humberside Police is fast becoming one of the lead forces in the area of wildlife crime within the UK. Investing in staff in this complex area of policing is one of the main ways forward to protect our rural communities and wildlife. Having 60 staff trained, who are prepared to go that extra mile to protect our valuable wildlife for future generations, is a strong sign of our continued commitment to our rural communities. Fiona is also a music teacher, woodwind player, and classical guitarist. She explains how the Coronavirus pandemic got her composing: “I started in the first lockdown in May 2020. I suddenly found myself with time on my hands and decided to write a few piano pieces. I now have nearly 40 titles finished, a YouTube channel, and other books waiting to be published.” Sadly, Fiona’s father died of Coronavirus in April 2020. The book is dedicated to her Dad. She also gives special thanks to her twin sister, Felicity Atkinson. Like Fiona, she is a musician but has been composing for piano for many years. She, too, has a YouTube channel—and inspired Fiona to have a go. Fiona’s first collection is entitled Piano Pictures volume 1. The pieces are of an intermediate standard and would suit a player from Grade 3 upwards and be good sight-reading for those of more advanced grades. Piano Pictures is available from Amazon at £10.00 (paperback) or £4.99 for the Kindle version. Fiona is pictured with her book of compositions.

Ready, steady, census Households across North Lincolnshire will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021 The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.” Census day will be on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information visit census.gov.uk.

Christmas Gift Appeal Update Doncaster and North Lincolnshire A personal message from Abbie
From originally wanting to help a few families turned into over 650 vulnerable families across Doncaster and North Lincolnshire. Thousands of donations, pre loved and new toys as well as raising over £2500 ! It’s been a rollercoaster full of laughs and tears. How we managed to pull this off in just over a month I will never know! Thank you to each and every one of you that has helped in some way, I honestly could not have done this without you. To my amazing volunteers who have become great friends. To all the volunteers who distributed toys. To the ones who helped with skip runs. To those who helped with drop off locations. To those who wrapped hundreds of selection boxes and to everyone that shared and donated THANK YOU. You don’t realise how you have helped so many struggling families this year. We have helped those who have fled domestic abuse, who have lost a parent, who are struggling with mental health, even families who have never asked for help before but suddenly had to because COVID-19 changed their lives. We went through the professional services to make sure we got the right families in need apart from a few who did personally message me. Christmas was a little different this year and I’m sure I can speak on behalf of the volunteers too. Waking up Christmas morning knowing lots of children received a few presents to open is something very special and it is all thanks to each and everyone of you that helped. Finally I’d like to say a special thank you to my hubby who I hardly saw this past month. Thank you for understanding and being supportive and to my two amazing daughters. The girls spent their evenings after school sorting through the donations and coming with me to pick toys. When they are old enough I am sure they will understand how we all helped create smiles for lots of little children like mention themselves. 14 Please “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements
WHAT LOCKDOWN MEANS FOR US The Prime Minister announced a national lockdown on Monday 4th January. Once again, local businesses have flexed their arrangements to help, offering takeaway and delivery services. Lockdown was introduced because Coronavirus cases are rising rapidly across the country. In Bassetlaw, there were 311 new cases of Coronavirus in the week over New Year—up 8.4% compared with the previous week. The reproduction (R) rate is between 1.1 and 1.3 meaning that every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 13 others. Lockdown rules mean staying in the village, or as close as possible, and not travelling unless for one of the ‘reasonable excuses’:
work, where you can’t work from home education or caring responsibilities visiting those in your support bubble – or your childcare bubble for childcare visiting hospital, GP, ort other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health buying goods or services that you need, but this should be within your local area wherever possible outdoor exercise, but done locally the care and exercise of an animal, or veterinary services.
FAKE CORONAVIRUS VACCINE MESSAGES Notts Neighbourhood Alert has had reports that a fake NHS text message is circulating, telling people that they are eligible to apply for the COVID-19 vaccine. When you click on the link, you are taken to a convincing but fake NHS website that asks for personal details, including bank account information. Treat these messages with caution! The best way to find information is from the Government website, GOV.UK, and to visit that website via a trusted source (such as through Google or Bing) and do not click on links in unsolicited texts or e-mails. There have also been reports of criminals making telephone calls and asking for payment over the phone before you can attend your vaccine appointment. The vaccine is free. If you receive a call, please hang up immediately. These scams appear very convincing and we all make mistakes. If you think you have been a victim of fraud: let your bank know immediately contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 for further scams advice if you are receiving unwanted phone calls, let your service provider know. You may wish to consider a landline phone with inbuilt call-blocking functions. These are available To advertiseand please 01302 532676 or 07912 643010 15 via some supermarkets onlinecall stores.

The donations will go to the Misterton health centre’s patient equipment fund and dementia care. Hazel started the 192-mile walk from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay two years ago but didn’t finish it until 2020. She explains: “My walking partner – my sister, Rosemary – broke a leg on day two of the walk, in dreadful conditions in Cumbria. We didn’t know it was broken at the time, so we managed to keep going until about the halfway point in Reeth, then gave up. Then I broke a leg while in the USA later the same year - so, in 2019, we were both rehabilitating and did some parts of the walk, which we finished last year. Many thanks to everyone, who sponsored me your support was a real inspiration when the going got tough!” Hazel is pictured with sister, Rosemary (left) and niece Sarah, who accompanied them on some of the stages of the walk, at the destination at Robin Hood’s Bay.
