Welcome to the February issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. As we look forward to hopefully a safer 2022, we hope this means coming together in a more social way, meeting friends more, going to events and your local clubs. We would love for you to send information on your clubs/events for the coming months to let the community know what is happening in your village. It is important for friends and family to make memories, meet new people and to live life to the full. At Arrow Publications our responsibility is to help keep the community connected. If anything the last couple of years it has proved the importance of community and looking out for each other. Keep your articles coming in by emailing me carolyn@arrowpublications.co.uk The deadline for the March issue is an earlier deadline of Tuesday 8th February for delivery by Tuesday 1st March. Enjoy the read.

Community News Epworth Music Day 2022 – Saturday 18th June After a two year gap owing to Covid, we’re planning to hold Epworth Music Day as a ‘live’ event again on 18th June 2022. We’re hoping to use the same locations as in 2019, but are also applying to close the roads in the centre of Epworth to provide a safer place to enjoy the music. If you want to perform at Music Day, please email me at peter.barnard@me.com We already have several performers on the list, and it’ll be a case of ‘first come, first served’! John Lambert looks after the stewards for the day and tells me that he is looking for some more people to help out. You don’t have to be a steward for the whole day – an hour or two would be as welcome. If you can help, please email John at jrlambert@doctors.org.uk So, please put the date in your diary and tell your friends! It should be a great day of live music in Epworth! peter.barnard@me.com 01427 873937
The Apple of Your Isle – Epworth Open Fruit Gardens The Apple of Your Isle has organised several successful Apple events in Epworth, as well as apple pressing days in Epworth, Haxey, Crowle and Ealand. We are planning to hold two events in Epworth to celebrate apple trees. The first one will be in April/May and the other in September/October. The Open Gardens Scheme operates to let people visit interesting gardens and donate to a local charity. Epworth gardens have been part of such an event. We’re planning to set up something similar but with apple trees as the focus. At this stage of planning, we’re looking for some owners of apple trees – it could also feature other fruit trees – in Epworth who would be prepared to open their garden for a morning/afternoon and let people visit. I’m planning to open our garden for the event. If you’re prepared to be part of this, please contact me on peter.barnard@me.com or 01427 873937.

Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society. Our next meeting, an illustrated talk on Street Furniture will take place in the Hood Room, Haxey Memorial Hall on Saturday, 12th February at 2 o'clock. Our heritage is all around us if we care to look. Look up, look down and round about, and we can see survivals from the past. Some are where they have always been, now obsolete, never removed, but others have found a new home in all sorts of places, preserved for the future. This illustrated talk, by Society member and Isle resident Malcolm Dolby, gives a flavour of what can be found in all sorts of places around the country. Armed with his camera, he has captured all manner of things, some local, but others on forays further afield. This is a light-hearted talk, open to all. Do come along to our friendly meetings and help to keep the Society functioning. Admission £2 including refreshments.
Westwoodside motors, after over 20 years of serving the local community have decided to hang up their tools and take retirement. I have known Gary and his colleagues since I started the 1st Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow back in 2007, 14 years ago! How time flies! Westwoodside motors was my first advertising customer and have been advertising in the Arrow for over 14 years, I cant quite believe that! I wish Gary and his colleagues all the best for 2022. Sheffield Childen’s Hospital Charity Christmas Quiz There were many entries for the Christmas Quiz “Food and Drink” this year and as a result 1st Prize goes to Mrs J Lennard of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire 2nd Prize to Mr C Hoskin of Wigton, Cumbria and 3rd Prize to Polly Helliar of Taunton, Somerset
Thank you to everyone who supported the Quiz in any way. A donation of approximately £650 will be sent to the Charity Anne Broster Quiz organiser.

Epworth Bowls Club Battle Green Epworth Spring is nearly upon us and Epworth Bowls Club is preparing for the new bowling season. We are a small, friendly and active club, founded in the 1930's and our season starts from 1st May to 30th August. Annual membership is £30 and social membership is £20. Our activities vary from league matches, internal competitions, visiting other clubs for friendly days out, have our own Gala Day and enjoy some very good Fun Days with our members. We also meet up socially every month during the winter. Bowling is not just for the elderly and we would like to welcome and encourage new members to join us, male and female, all age groups (children from age 12 years). Our roll-ups, which are run twice a week, have been well supported and we hope to do the same again this year in compliance with any COVID 19 rules and regulations which have been set out by Bowls England. This is a good opportunity to learn a new sport, make new friends, to exercise according to your own ability and all at a very reasonable cost. Social membership is also available if you prefer. Why not come and have a go, you will be made very welcome with bowls and instructions initially provided. Contact Liz or Sue who will be pleased to give you any further information you require.
