News from Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society. The play has been chosen and cast and

rehearsals have already begun for Haxey’s Spring production. “Key For Two”, by two of theatre’s funniest writers, John Chapman and Dave Freeman, is an hilarious comedy surrounding the life of Harriet, who maintains her elegant lifestyle with the financial aid of two gentlemen friends. As you would expect, this arrangement requires careful planning. But the best laid plans invariably go wrong and the audience will thoroughly enjoy the consequences. Well known faces will take to the stage in the shape of Joan Young, Jeremy Cooper, John Spittlehouse, Carol Hoar, Nigel Smith, Diane Corbett and Ilene Pearson. Making his debut as producer is Lenny Lowe. Performances will take place on March 21st, 22nd, 27th, 28th and 29th in Haxey Memorial Hall so make a date for an evening of pure laughter.

After the great success of the Spring and Autumn dance programmes this year, the Isle Dance for Health dances will be continuing with another programme of 9 dances starting at the end of January.

4

The 2013 programmes were supported financially by the Community Public Health Improvement Programme of North Lincolnshire NHS and by North Lincolnshire Council, and that support has allowed us to run the dances in the villages of Westwoodside, Epworth and Crowle. In the 2013 programme we were given many great comments, including ‘This has been one the most enjoyable experiences – friendship, conviviality, fun!’ We will be returning to those villages in 2014 and running the afternoon folk dances along the same format. The dances will again focus on engaging with those over 40. The Lys St Georges Folk Dance Band will again be providing live music and there will be expert tuition and guidance. The dates for the 2014 programme are: Westwoodside Village Hall. Thursday 23 January, Thursday 30 January and Thursday 6 February Epworth, Imperial Hall, Tuesday 11 February, Tuesday 25 February and Tuesday 4 March The dances will again start at 2.30pm and run until 4.30pm. Admission will be £2. No experience is necessary. We welcome individuals and couples. We look forward to welcoming back those who have danced with us in 2013 as well as new dancers. It is a great way to keep active and have an enjoyable afternoon in good company. Why not join us? For more details contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937. News, News, News, News, News, News, News... ALZHEIMER'S SOCIETY TOMBOLA AT WALKERS NURSERIES CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR ON 22nd NOVEMBER,2013 We are delighted to announce that an amazing £366.00 was raised by the tombola. A very big thank you to everyone who donated the prizes, and along with the donations that were received, the final total reached £520.24 for Alzheimer sufferers and their carers in our local area. I would like to thank Walkers Nurseries for giving me the opportunity of having a stall at the Christmas Fair and for their generous support on the day. Jill Snow

The annual Epworth Music Day (held on 21 June) is very much a local, community event. Musicians, dancers and other performers of any genre and at any level of experience and ability are encouraged to perform and people are invited and welcomed to watch, listen and participate at a number of venues throughout the town. and without charge to any member of the audience. As a result, it encourages participation from those who might otherwise be nervous about performing in public, particularly as well as those who live in our village and locality. We have held very successful Music Days over the last five years, and these have been well covered in the Arrow. Epworth Music Day 2014 falls on Saturday 21 June and we are planning for this Music Day to be something rather grand. We already have over 15 groups and bands who want to come and perform. The event is planned to run from 10am to 10pm. Events are expected to take place throughout the town – indoors and outside. These will be both programmed and impromptu. There will be an evening concert in St Andrew’s Church. We have already secured some financial support from Epworth Town Council.

The four directors of the Music Day are now looking for some volunteers to help with the organisation beforehand and running of the day. This might be writing some publicity material or looking after some of the groups on the day. You don't have to be a musician or performer to give us some assistance. If you think you could help us – in whatever small way – we would be delighted to hear from you. Please call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937 if you would like to talk more about this opportunity.

The Isle of Axholme Gardening Club's next meeting is Tuesday 14th January 2014 The programme continues with Sweet Peas - David Matthewman of Pontefract. The Competition is Hyacinths grown in a pot. All events start at 7.30pm at the Imperial Hall, Epworth opens from 6.45pm. If you are interested in joining the Committee, please speak to a current Committee member or call 01427 874126.

Happy New Year!

We've been back 2 weeks now after enjoying our Christmas break. There was plenty to enjoy before the last term ended, with our Christmas plays for Foundation class up to year 4. We held a collection at the performances to raise funds for our school this year. We are in desperate need of replacing some of the play equipment in the playground so hopefully the donations will cover the cost of repairs. Thanks to all who attended we really appreciate your support and the children enjoyed taking part. The winter fayre was a roaring success, with lots of stalls including the ever popular chocolate tombola, and jolly jars. Again it was well attended and we managed to raise an almost record breaking £600 which will go back into school to buy new equipment for the children. Thank you to all who attended, those who donated prizes, bottles, chocolate, jolly jars and also to those who gave their time to help out. Just before Christmas the children were spoken to by a representative of the Forge in Scunthorpe. This is an organisation who support those in desperate need of food who would otherwise go hungry. In order to support this organisation, in exchange for a donation to make up food hampers, the children were able to have a non-uniform day. This was held on the same day as our Christmas dinner which made the children appreciate their lunch even more. Santa's elves transformed the Foundation play house into a grotto for the day, and the man himself paid a visit to the children who received goodies from him after disclosing their most wanted Christmas gifts. It gave the school a festive feel and their was a buzz of excitement in the air. Last but not least of our Christmas festivities came a carol service at St Nicholas' Church in Haxey. The children sung their hearts out and really enjoyed it. Thanks always to Reverend Green. The children have one last thing to look forward to at the end of the month as they are being treated to a performance of Robin Hood kindly paid for by the PTFA so we hope they enjoy it.

The PTFA are having a meeting on 15th January. If you are a parent of a child in school you are automatically a Member. If you have any ideas or time you can give why not come down and see what we have planned for the school over the coming months? The meeting is in school at 7.30pm. If you can't attend but would like to be part of the PTFA contact details of committee members can be found on the notice board just outside reception. We are holding a Bags 2 School on 21st January. If you would like to have a post Christmas sort out please deposit your items outside reception on the morning of the 21st. We are given a price per kilo of items donated and the more we get the more we raise for school. A blue bag will in children's book bags to fill with unwanted items. We really do appreciate your support.

Axholme Camera Club News Most people who take photographs will usually be of friends, family or photos of holidays such as buildings or landscape scenes. In other words they will try to make a picture to remind them of that particular time and place. The members of the camera club are given challenges with different subjects each month, the results being judged as a competition entry. The hope being that these challenges and competitions will help to improve the photographic skills of the members. The camera clubs meetings on the 4 th and 10th December go a long way to help improve the skills in Landscape Photography. Although it would have been an advantage if the meetings had been reversed. On the 4th December we had a print competitions, the subject was Landscape/Seascape. The judge for the evening was Mr Martin Joy from Barton. Martin as won many awards and has been a judge for a number of years. This is the first time that Martin has been to Axholme Camera Club and expressed his appreciation at being asked to judge our competition. He opened by stating the quality of images was high and congratulated the members on some great work. He choose three coloured images and two monochrome to receive top marks. On the 10th December we had a guest speaker from Northallerton, David Coates PSA, UPP, FIAP with over 1800 exhibition acceptances in international salons we were looking forward to a very interesting evening. We were not disappointed, David using the old system of 35mm slides, entertained the members with some outstanding stunning images and excellent explanations of how he had managed to take the photograph. We started with photos of the Lake District then moving to Scotland, then Skye. After a tea break the journey around the UK continued, with images of the North counties, mainly in the area of Teeside, then finishing in the peak district. I am sure from the members response we have not seen the last of Mr David Coates and providing he has the time we would expect to see his name on our future program. A Christmas Message from Members of Axholme Camera Club who send season’s greetings to all the readers and hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

HERITAGE SOCIETY MEETING REPORT - NOVEMBER 2013 Due to the absence of the new chairman, Diana Hardy, the November meeting of the society was chaired by committee member Geoff. Starr. A review of the October A.G.M. noted the popularity of the Thornton’s Chocolates presentation and notice of a visit to the factory in the Spring of next year was given. Arrangements for the shopping trip to York and details of the Christmas party were discussed. A big change to the party this year will mean that members and guests will be enjoying a buffet meal from Mowbrays of Haxey rather than providing their own food. Members were reminded that future Winter meetings will take place in the afternoon and were invited to bring along items in January for Dr Malcolm Dolby’s talk on ‘Antiques and Collectables’. Geoff then introduced Mr Roy Fanthorpe whose advertised presentation ‘A Christmas Spoof’ had members curious as to the nature of his talk. Roy immediately satisfied members curiosity by explaining that the date of pagan rites and ceremonies already established in Britain had provided an easy platform on which to celebrate Christmas when Christianity arrived here. Delving back into history Roy highlighted some of our present day traditions and how they related to and could be recognised in ancient pagan rites and stories Following the vote of thanks, given by Mrs Norma Williams, for a most entertaining talk the free draw was won by Mrs Sandra McColl refreshments were served and the meeting closed with members receiving their invitations to the Christmas party.

Westwoodside Church of England School News Foundation Stage Twenty nine children from our Foundation Stage took part in ‘The Wriggly Nativity’. Parents, carers and families appreciated how even the youngest 3 year olds had learned all the songs and could sit on the stage for half an hour. The performance ended with the children singing the traditional ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. Year 3 In Geography, Year 3 studied a village in India, looking for similarities and differences. Mrs Collett’s class found some of the clothes were the same but were often more brightly coloured and a lot of the clothes people wear are different. The class enjoyed dressing up to see what the clothes were like. During their Passport Day, Year 3 learnt about Spain, including eating paella! Farewell I retired as Head Teacher at the end of the Autumn Term. I would like to thank all the children and adults who have contributed to Westwoodside Church of England School over the years of my Headship and wish Miss Richardson, the new Head Teacher, and everyone involved with the school the very best for 2014 and beyond. Year 5/6 Christmas Performance Westwoodside Church of England Primary School This term the Christmas performance was The Wind in the Willows. The performances were on Thursday 12th December at 2:00pm and 6:30pm. The show is all about 4 friends called Toad, Ratty, Mole and Badger. They try to stop a large band of stoats and weasels invading Toad Hall. The show is very funny and interesting. There are a variety of songs and plenty of solos sung by the main characters. There have been weeks of practice in the hope that the show will turn out as good as we had hoped By Jodi Lawson and Benjamin Walters Yr6

By the time you are reading this article we will be past Christmas and into the New Year. One of my regular tasks in the garden over the Christmas period is to spend a couple of days pruning my established freestanding apple trees. The time to prune freestanding apple trees is when their growth is dormant – i.e. between November and February. Trees growing in a restricted form – e.g. cordons and fans – are better pruned in late summer. An important trick to master when you are growing apples – and wanting to prune them successfully – is to be able to distinguish between growth buds and fruit buds. As they suggest, growth buds will generate new, woody growth, and fruit buds will produce blossom and, with the help of these and other insects and without the intervention of untimely frost, will produce fruit. At this time of year when the leaves have fallen from the trees, it is a good time to inspect the branches on the tree and you can tell which buds are which. Remember that if you prune wood containing fruit buds the tree will not produce any fruit from those branches or spurs. A fruit bud is typically fatter and more rounded than a growth bud which will lie flatter on the branch. All trees will produce both types of bud, but younger trees are more likely to have more growth buds than fruiting ones. Trees produce new growth from the end of branches and also from spur systems – those collections of short, stubby growth. So, I would suggest that you stand in front of your freestanding apple tree and look for the new growth it has made in the previous year. If you look closely at the end of a branch or spur you will see a mark across the wood indicating where new growth started in the previous summer. This mark is called a terminal bud. The colour and texture of the wood at the end of the branch or spur will also be lighter than older wood. If you leave the new growth unpruned it will grow on from a new terminal bud. Fruiting buds will only emerge on wood that is 2 years old. So, if you take off all the new wood made the previous year (i.e. at the terminal bud) that wood will not develop any fruiting buds next year. The challenge is to strike a balance between allowing new, developmental growth and reproduction of fruiting buds. You also need to keep in mind how much fruit of the tree can bear. As I said last month, if you take off too much wood the tree may react by putting on a lot of growth next year. To avoid that, try taking out no more than a quarter of the new growth. In the next article I will take a final look at pruning, looking at pruning both those stubby, spur systems that can produce many apples, as well as creating a framework for developing new growth and fruit.

The Apple of Your Isle is a local organisation which encourages the growth and use of apples and pears. If you would like more information about our activities or would like to talk about your trees and fruit, please contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

The Epworth and District Flower Club had an enjoyable Christmas Party night in their usual venue at Haxey. Almost all of the membership welcomed Sarah Atwell, a local Demonstrator, who inspired all with her demonstration of a Christmas table decoration using a cracker. Each member then proceeded to create their own arrangement. The crackers, produced by Oasis, had a small centre of oasis into which members put small greenery of various types and three beautiful roses and a variety of baubles, gold sprayed holly leaves, twigs and wire. Individuality was assured by choice of rose colour....red or cream...and Christmas ornaments. Some chose green, some red, some gold baubles and there were silver sprayed decorations and a variety of ribbons too. A happy and confident creative atmosphere pervaded the evening and Sarah was on hand to give support and advice as necessary. She had provided everything necessary and thought of all eventualities making it a very well organised and thoroughly enjoyable event for all. Members were thanked for their support of the Open Evening held in November when circumstances had conspired to cause some difficulties. It was put to the members that they might consider using the Haxey Methodist Church for future Open Meetings. Discussion about this will take place at the AGM to be held on February 10th 2014. Notices about flower demonstrations being held in the region and nationally and general news was given by Debbie Beecher and the party atmosphere continued with a wonderful and mouth-watering spread of food provided by members. The next meeting is a social event at Hattie's on January, 14th 2014 at 7.30pm.

Tia is looking for a New Home! This beautiful girl is Tia, a very pretty one year old German Shepherd Cross. Tia is an adorable, friendly dog with lovely manners, who is very sociable and playful. She has lived with children and is great with them, very gentle and protective. She will need some training and socialising, as she is not really used to other dogs, but we feel she is worth the effort because of her fantastic nature. Tia is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would be interested in meeting this gorgeous girl, please give us a call on 01427 728705.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As I write this, we are moving rapidly towards the end of term and the final weeks of 2013. At St Martin’s we have been busily learning lines and songs for our Christmas performances. This year, we have heard all about why Penny the Puzzled Penguin’s wings are long and floppy and also that we should all take time to remember the true meaning of Christmas through our production of Key Stage 2’s ‘Lost Toys’. Community Spirit was very much in the December air in Owston Ferry as a number of our Key Stage 2 pupils ventured out to Lindum Court Residential Home to entertain residents with festive songs and traditional carols. We were also involved, once again this year, in running a competition to select someone to switch on the village’s Christmas Lights. This honour was bestowed upon Brooke McKenna whose beautiful picture of ‘lights around the village’ was selected as the overall winner. Winners of St Martin’s Lantern Competition were Alfie Temperton, Sarah Sellers and Abbie Garner. Thank you to Councillor Jan Williams who came in to school to help judge winners of these two competitions. A Christmas Fair and Lantern Parade took place on Friday 6th December. Thank you to all who supported our Christmas Fair, concerts and lantern parade. The children ran their own stalls at the Christmas Fair and the chocolate tombola was a particular favourite! In amongst all of these ‘festive’ activities we continue to work hard on the curriculum. For the children in the Early Years Foundation Stage at both St Martin's and West Butterwick C of E Schools, outdoor learning has had a strong focus this term. The children have been enjoying a selection of new resources. The building and construction set offers the potential for investigation on a larger and more extensive scale. These resources stimulate creative thinking and encourage high levels of interaction and co-operation, with children using plastic crates, wooden planks and ropes to build all sorts of creations including pirate ships and the X Factor stage! The water play set encourages the exploration of water on a grand scale, with children transporting water in large pipes, guttering and water troughs. It inspires children to be physically active and expressive as they play. The children thoroughly enjoy their outdoor learning, come rain French Breakfast or shine – they are always ready to learn through play no matter what the weather! In response to the National Sports Premium initiative, there have been additional sporting activities involvement in our schools recently :Cross Country in Scunthorpe’s Central Park, Athletics and an ‘Events Day’ for our PE ‘Rising Stars’. We are really enjoying increased participation in sports and look forward to what 2014 may bring in this respect also. In addition to all of this, a ‘French Breakfast’ was run by our French Teacher Mrs Cressey recently and this was thoroughly enjoyed. Children had the chance to enjoy croissants, hot chocolate, bread, ham , cheese and pain au chocolat. It was very popular! For more information about what has been happening across the Trentside Federation then please visit www.trentsidefederation.co.uk Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, Trentside Federation of St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Don’t Drink Drive DRINK-DRIVERS NOW FACE TOUGHER RULES Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers, Drink-drive rules involving the most serious offenders are to be tightened up. Under new regulations the most dangerous offenders will have to prove they are no longer dependent on alcohol before they are allowed to get back behind the wheel. The new measures will also see those drink-drivers who obstruct the police by refusing to allow their blood samples to be analysed being treated the same as other high-risk offenders. Currently, all high-risk offenders must pass a medical examination before they can be issued with a driving licence following their disqualification. However, drivers can start driving as soon as they have applied for their licence and before they have taken and passed the necessary medical. But from June 1st this year the most dangerous drink-drivers will have to pass a medical confirming they are no longer alcohol dependent at the end of their disqualification and BEFORE they start driving. Also, those offenders who refuse to allow their blood samples to be analysed will also, from June 1 st only get their licence back following mdisqualification if they pass the required medical. Under the High Risk Offender (HRO) scheme, drivers convicted of certain serious drink/driving offences must have a medical investigation to confirm that there are no on-going problems with the misuse of alcohol before they can be issued with a licence. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA is notified of such offenders by the courts. Last year the DVLA was notified by the courts of just over 50,000 drink-driving convictions. Nearly 22,000 of those were classed as high-risk offenders. Of those, around 5,000 drivers either failed, or failed to attend, their medical. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information by contacting. Paul Tuke.
