Community News The February meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 2nd February at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 and is a talk by Gail Summerfield from Westshores Nurseries entitled ‘Shining a light on bulbs’. Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Annual subs will be due. They are £7.50 individual membership and £1 2 for families. Meeting fees are members £2, non members £3. There are 2 meetings in March (due to Easter in early April). The 2nd March meeting is about Agapanthus and 30th March is David Matthewman on Sweet Peas.

Men’s Society hears talk About Falklands Wildlife It is the complete absence of rats and cats that has enabled the groundnesting birds on the Falkland Islands to continue to survive – members of the Epworth Men’s Society were told at their December meeting. Speaker for the evening - on Monday, December 1st - was amateur photographer Duncan Hill, who hails from West Street in West Butterwick, and has travelled all over the world to photograph wildlife.

He said he and visited the islands in what passes for summer in the Antarctica, but still had to contend with a storm on his second day there with winds reaching 90mph. While on the islands Mr Hill was also able to photograph a Short-Eared Owl but was unable to speculate on what it might have lived on. Mr Hill is a member of the Doncaster Camera Club and the Yorkshire based Gamma Camera Club. His photographic skills has been recognised with him being made a Master of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and gaining an international award for Excellence by the Federation of International Amateur Photographers. Included in the Society’s events for the New Year are a quiz night with questions posed by its President, Ken Turner, an indoor games night and an evening visit to the Doncaster Air Museum. Anyone interested in joining the Men’s Society, or finding out more about the organisation, is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288.

Mr Hill, a retired teacher, explained that the Falklands were very sparsely populated - numbering no more that 4,500 people, who mainly live in small communities. “Because of this the wildlife on the islands is not use to seeing humans and they are vastly outnumbered by the sheep living on the Falklands,” said Mr Hill, who was addressing about 30 members of the Society at Epworth’s Red Lion Hotel. He explained the wildlife on the islands is not without it predators, with Skewer birds hunting for eggs and penguins facing leopard seals and sea lions whenever they re-enter the sea. Mr Hill, who used a computer and screen to give his illustrated talk, said the Falklands were home to numerous birds, including geese, thrushes wrens, finches and gulls - to name but a few.

Haxey Church of England Primary School News Happy New Year! We've had a busy December here at the school, with lots to cram in before we broke up for Christmas. Our Winter Fayre kicked off the festivities, which was very well attended. A variety of stalls were on offer, including jolly jars, the ever popular chocolate and bottle tombola's, splat the rat, name the teddy, guess how many sweets in the jar, face painting, higher and lower, hoopla, pin the nose on the snowman (thanks to Kirsty Player for her spectacular Snowman!) delicious bakes and treats and hot refreshments amongst many others. Thank you to all who donated, helped out and supported the event. A grand total of over £600 was raised which is amazing! The money will be used to support the children's learning and other events at the school. We had a 'Bags 2 School' collection at the back end of November. Each child was given a bag to fill with unwanted clothes, shoes, bedding etc. it is collected and weighed. 206 kilos was collected raising over £80 for the school. Thanks to all who took the time and effort to fetch in a bag. There will be another collection later on this term, dates to be published. It's an ideal time to have a 'spring clear out' ready for some hopefully favourable weather. If you do not have a child at the school but have items you wish to donate, please get in touch and we can aid collection. It'll save you a trip to the skip! On 11th December the children enjoyed a visit from Father Christmas. The play house in the Foundation Stage playground was transformed into his 'grotto', and each child had a short chat with the man in red before receiving a small gift. Santa sent his thanks to Mrs Shah for letting him borrow the play house for the day. The children also had their Christmas dinner at lunch time. We would all like to send out best wishes and thanks to all kitchen staff for providing delicious meals throughout the year. The children have enjoyed visits to St Nicholas Church over the festive period. Firstly, Rev. Green gave a service about the meaning of Advent, which is not just about the chocolate calendars. The school hosted a Christmas Carol Service on 15th Dec which gave the children along with parents and relatives the chance to sing some wonderful hymns and carols in the spirit of Christmas. Thank you to Rev. Green for supporting the school and the children's learning journey. Later on that day the children enjoyed their class Christmas parties. Thank you to parents for providing refreshments, and the teachers for organising Christmas games. As a Church of England school we encourage all to think of others at Christmas. In conjunction with The Forge in Scunthorpe, we asked children and parents to consider bringing in an item of food or a gift for those less fortunate than ourselves. Through their generosity, we were able to put together hampers from items donated. Thank you those who supported this initiative. Best wishes from all at the school.

Misterton News

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCHON A SUCCESS

Misterton’s Christmas lights were switched on on Friday 5 December by Lauren Duffner, who was the Parish Council’s young Citizen of the Year 2014. After doing the honours, people packed into the Parish Church for hot soup and refreshments and were entertained by singers of the theatre group, Be’Dazzled (pictured). Over £180 was raised in a raffle and in donations, which will be presented to the Parish Church and Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. Many thanks to the Parish Council’s working group for organising the event, and to all those who supported this annual date to mark the count-down to Christmas.

The Christmas Market raised £310 was raised for Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Care. This brought to almost £2500 the money raised at the four events in the villages of Misterton and West Stockwith. Many thanks to the organisers, stallholders, and everyone who supported them.

EXHIBITION RAISES FUNDS FOR CHARITY Visitors to the WW1 exhibition in Misterton and West Stockwith donated £180 to Help for Heroes. And to top that, two residents who had knitted up WW1 patterns have offered them for sale, with the proceeds also going to the forces’ charity. So if anyone would like an air force blue scarf, or a sleeveless pullover, balaclava, socks, fingerless mittens, gloves and wristbands in grey, please drop your bids into The Misterton Centre by the end of January. CHRISTMAS MARKET ENDS WEEK OF CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES The Dovecote Cafe’s Christmas Market ended a week of Christmas events in Misterton. The annual event featured carols sung by pupils of Misterton Primary School (pictured) and dancing by the Everett-Fox School of Dance.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, December 2014 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: The Foreman Carter Centre, Westwoodside Playing Field, Westwoodside, DN9 2DX Telephone: 01652 618306 / 0784 220 1877 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk

Haxey Parish Council Precept - 2015/16 Residents will be aware of the recent National discussions over the devolving of the Grant for Town and Parish Councils from Principal Authorities and the furore that has ensued from local Councils and communities when the Government grant has not been passed down. In the last 2 years, North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) has passed down the grant in full, provided the Town or Parish Council maintained its precept at the precious year’s level. Policy Advice from the Leader of NLC on devolving the Government Grant for the 2015/16 financial year has recently been received by the Parish Council as follows: Grant Support for Council Tax – 2015/16 “This year we propose once again to pass on the financial support given to us by the Government. I know that many councils have chosen not to do this; however, I consider that supporting our parish councils is very much an important part of our political administration. The scheme we wish to implement will mean that most parishes receiving grant last year can receive the same amount again this year, while those that increased their precept and received no grant last year will now be eligible for support. For 2015/16, if a parish freezes or increases its precept it will receive support as if it had kept its precept the same as last year. If a parish reduces its precept, it will receive a proportionately reduced amount. We all know that residents, particularly those on fixed incomes have really benefited from the freeze in Council Tax and we at North Lincolnshire council with support from the Government, intend to freeze council tax for the fourth year. It is important that we continue to support our residents in these times of austerity and I know that you will be considering this when setting your precept. The proposal is of course subject to agreement at our council meeting on 11 th December.” In the interest of providing more detail and clarity to Residents, the following is how the precept grant is calculated: The Parish precept is based on the Band D Council Tax for Haxey which for the current financial year is 20.43. This figure is arrived at as follows: Each property subject to Council Tax is assigned to one of eight valuation bands A to H based on the property’s assumed value in 1991. Each band is charged council tax at a different rate with Band D being the benchmark. Bands A to C pay less than a Band D and Bands E to H pay more than Band D. The numbers of properties in each Band are converted to Band D equivalents and this total becomes the tax base for the area – for Haxey it is 1578.9. The precept divided by the tax base gives the Band D council tax. Therefore in Haxey’s case the Council Tax yield - £32,257 divided by tax base, 1578.9 equals the Band D figure of 20.43. The grant from NLC for the current year was £2778 which when added to the Council Tax yield gives a figure of £35035, which is the current Parish precept for 2014/15. For the coming financial year, we now know (subject to the Principal Authority’s meeting on 11 th December) the grant received from NLC for the precept will again be £2778. Residents are reminded that the Parish Council has maintained the same precept for the last 5 years. The Parish Council Finance Committee will meet in December to consider the accounts, set the budget for 2015/16 and make a recommendation to the Full Council for the precept for 2015/16 at its meeting on 16th December.

The Chairman, Councillors and Clerk to Haxey Parish Council wish all residents a Very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year 22

Thirty-six pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Haxey Primary competed in the Isle Athletics Tournament held at the PODs, Scunthorpe. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event with the Y5 and 6 team achieving second place and the Y3 and 4 team achieving first place. Thank you to Miss Harrison and her team of Sports Ambassadors for organising and running the event. Pupils from Haxey Primary took part in a meeting at Belton Primary to discuss the Children’s Rights charter. They participated in a number of activities and presentations to gain further understanding of their Rights. They then planned an assembly and follow up lessons which they will be carrying out during Antibullying week in order to inform all the pupils about the Children’s Rights Charter.

These two gorgeous girls are Summer and Honey, German Shepherd Crosses who are litter sisters, and around one year old. These girls have been handed into the Rescue as their owners were no longer able to look after them. Although they are quite large dogs, they are very gentle and quiet, and have lovely manners. We would ideally like to re-home them together as they are inseparable. They will be spayed and vaccinated prior to adoption. If you are interested in adopting these lovely girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools As I write this, we are moving rapidly towards the end of term and the final weeks of 2014. At St Martin’s we have been busily learning lines and songs for our Christmas performances of Aladdin (Key Stage 2), ‘It’s a Baby’ (Foundation Stage) and KS1’s ‘Eddie the Penguin Saves the World’. Community Spirit is very much in the December air in Owston Ferry as a number of our Key Stage 2 pupils venture out to Lindum Court Residential Home to entertain residents with festive songs and traditional carols. We were also involved, once again this year, in running a competition to select someone to switch on the village’s Christmas Lights. This honour was bestowed upon Alfie Temperton whose beautiful picture of ‘It’s Christmas …. Ho Ho Ho’ was selected as the overall winner. A Christmas Fair and Lantern Parade took place on 28th November and almost £600 was raised. Thank you to all who supported our Christmas Fair, concerts and lantern parade. The children ran their own stalls at the Christmas Fair. The Art Club at West Butterwick School has made some lovely Christmas cards this year. There is a Christmas Disco planned for 11th December and a Christmas Fair planned for the final week of term. In amongst all of these ‘festive’ activities we continue to work hard on the curriculum. For the children in the Juniors at West Butterwick, a ‘most delicious time’ was had by all at the recent educational visit to York’s ‘Chocolate Story’. This was in connection with Design and Technology and Scientific investigatory work linked to materials and their properties. Pupils designed and made their own chocolate! Both schools in our Federation continue to participate in a range of sporting activities linked to the Government’s Sports Premium initiative (Olympic Legacy):- football and cross country are the most recent events. The newly established ‘Street Dance’ after school club at St Martin’s is proving popular. So is the new ‘Dodgeball Club’ at West Butterwick. For more information about what has been happening across the Trentside Federation then please visit www.trentsidefederation.co.uk. On behalf of both schools, may I wish you all a peaceful New Year. Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, Trentside Federation of St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools.

MY DIARY SINCE BEEN A SOLDIER STARTING JANUARY 16 1941 THE START & LEAVING HOME BY 1764164 Gunner Clifford Spencer Royal Artillery

Having destroyed my diary just before been taken P.O.W I shall just mention the things that I can remember. I am now a P.O.W. (Prisoner of War) date, Easter Tuesday 1943. First I’ll always remember the first day I joined up, first the parting from my darlings at home that walk to the station. First falls of snow of the winter. Caught the 7.30am train from Haxey, changed at Doncaster and Manchester, arrived at Blackpool 6pm. Lorries waiting for us which took us straight to...... and there I joined the 229 Regiment RA. That same night I was inoculated, also received most of my army kit, then took a tram and arrived at private billets at 9.30. The landlady had a much-wanted supper waiting for us, her name Mrs Bellinger. There I remained one month. Poor digs. While I was there I did one month of post and rifle drill at the Red Lion Hotel square Bisbam, (Bispham, Blackpool) not a hard do, but we had plenty of cold weather. I then changed digs to Mrs.... Then went to the D.BATTER (no explanation), where I started learning to drive, also was taught, map reading, Morse code, maintenance of lorries, Lewis guns, gas, telephone, more rifle and foot drill, and foot sores, two months I had there, in the meantime I had a rash on my head and body and had two days in hospital The next stage was moving to Cleethorpes, there I had two days and got my first leave, and what a day that was, couldn’t get home quick enough. I still had a rash. But Dr. Marrison, soon put me OK. The weeks leave was only to short, but a happy one. Went back to Cleethorpes, stayed a week, billeted in empty house, was sent to Easton Hall Grantham. There I joined 107 Battery. I had a good time there, (that is for army life I mean) not much to do, was helping batman Captain Noel and 2nd Lt. Linica. Lovely weather and three or four 24-hour leaves, and that’s where I first started hitch hiking. After about 6 weeks there we went to Blandford, Dorset, there we’re supposed to do some hard training, but hardly did a thing, just a bit of maintenance, had one day of driving, also had good weather there, few wet days, which made the wood where the lorries were a mess. No leave from there. After about six or seven weeks there. I went to Waddington, where I was put in a gun team and for the first time put on a gun right, we only had a Lewis gun on the sight. More lovely weather and 24 leave, the leaves were the best part about the army. There we were in a hut with kitchen pantry joined on. Sergeant Lane was in charge of us for a month and Bombardier Whichello took over. He is one of my mates up to this day.

Top tips for driving in winter weather A very merry Christmas to all our readers. If the weather is bad, drive only if it is necessary. If the journey is necessary, drivers should ensure their car is properly prepared and they know how to cope with changing road conditions. ·Take it slow and allow extra time for the journey, even if it is the usual work or school run. Other traffic on the road will be driving slower. ·In snow or ice, slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front. When roads are slippery, it will take ten times longer to stop so drivers need to look a long way ahead and plan to move lanes as necessary ·Use low gears to help keep traction, especially on hills, and use gears to restrain speed on downhill sections to avoid the need to brake ·The road in front of vehicles clearing snow is likely to be worse than the road behind. Don’t pass these vehicles ·Check the windscreen washer is topped up with windscreen washer fluid for the appropriate outside temperature and that the wiper blades are clean. Drivers also need a clear view out of all windows not just the windscreen ·Turn on headlights to see and be seen. Bad weather causes poor visibility for all motorists ·Pack an emergency kit (such as warm outdoor clothes, a reflective jacket, a torch, and a fully charged mobile phone.) Drivers should remember to be cautious at all times, check the weather forecast before heading off on their journey, and prepare for familiar, short journeys as well as long ones. Safe Driving, Paul Tuke. Doncaster Advanced Motorists. Tel: 01302 886 276 (Btw) No drinking and driving, stay safe.
