Wishing all our readers a Happy New Year. You may be suffering from the annual feast known as Christmas! The only time of the year where calories don’t count! If so don’t worry there are plenty of sales to visit to burn off those extra calories. Try walking down the local High Street to see what bargains you can find. If you fancy a walk on the wild side, have you visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park? Plenty of shops and a great cafe and of course news of the painted dog pups born in December. Must be worth a visit!
Thank you to all the Arrow readers, advertisers and contributors for your input in 2016. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I wish you good health for 2017! The deadline for the February issue is Thursday 12th January for distribution by the 1st February. If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Well done to everyone who contributed to the Poppy Appeal Collection in Haxey Parish. Just a little more than last year was banked. A Total of £3402.17. Thank you to the shops and pubs who had poppy boxes and encouraged their customers to contribute. Burnham Mill, Low Street Stores, Haxey Co-op, Greenhill Stores, Westwoodside Shop, The Duke William and The Carpenters Arms. Thank you to St Nicholas Church and to the Parish Council for their generous contributions; and to Haxey and Westwoodside Schools for raising considerable amounts. A very special Thank you to our stalwart House to House Collectors who collected £2768.49 this year. £175 more than last year. At a time when everyone is more security conscious and loath to open the door to strangers or fail to hear a knock and do not have a bell, many areas have discontinued house to house collections. History of RAF Sandtoft revealed to Men’s Society A talk on the history of Sandtoft airdrome – when it was used as a training ground for RAF bomber crews during World Was 11 – was given to members of the Epworth Men’s Society at their December meeting. It was delivered by Society committee member, Ken Turner, who lives on the town’s High Street, and was in his early teens when what had been two farms were surveyed and purchased to be converted into the airdrome. “As a flying training school it had a short life of just 22 months and became known as ‘prangtoft’ because of the number of accidents that took place there,” said Mr Turner, who was a RAF cadet at the time and went on to do his National Service as an engine mechanic. He told the more that 40 Society members present that Sandtoft opened as a training facility in the February of 1944 and that despite its short life some 200 aircrew were killed due to accidents and crashes. These included mid-air collisions and – on occasion – airplanes crashing into one another whilst manoeuvring on the ground. He said that Sandtoft was also used as a safe landing ground by operational airplanes. Mr Turner said that the RAF training Station at Sandtoft eventually closed in the December of 1945. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Men’s Society is asked to telephone Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288. Membership cost just £3.00 a year.

Jul. 12th. We have been getting parcels regular lately. Good news about Sicily. Jul. 18th. Sunday Once again the hut is quiet. There is a concert going on outside. The news has been good this week. I have had five letters, three from you dear. Oh my darling your letters are beautiful, they make tears come to my eyes at times. Our little Julie seems to be full of life. Now for the biggest laugh I have developed a little tummy. Nearly everyone in the camp has. It’s what we call a ‘skilly-belly’, it will go when we get more solid food, this Itie stuff fills one with wind. I never had one like this before. Gosh it is hot these days. I’m glad I don’t have to work in it in fact I don’t think I could stick it. The coolest place is in the huts; the evenings are lovely, I don’t wear a shirt, from getting up to going to bed. For a little exercise I play at a game called Tenner quoits after tea when the heat of the day is gone. Well, after fourteen weeks my foot is better after the burns. Shall be going to the service later on, it’s now about 7.15p.m. I’ve just had my tea. Would have been a decent meal in winter but not my idea for a hot Sunday tea. I had cocoa, fried sausages, and egg flakes we are getting those in parcels now. It’s like a powder in a tin, put it to steep in water, then fry, it tastes like the yolk of the egg. Good night my darlings, xxx Jul. 19th. What a day, for three hours 11am - 2pm there was a raid on, we could hear AA and bombs, I understand it’s Rome that has been bombed, then there came leaflets, thousands of them flying over the camp, a few dropping inside the camp. What a sight. Of course we have had it read out. It was telling the Ities that Rome would be bombed, but all the historical places would not. It stated that their pilots would be picked, and would bomb in daylight, today must have been the first go. All the civvies left their work and went home. I felt very sorry for them. I am sure they don’t want wars, and I do believe that they would be glad if England did take over. They are between two fires. Tonight there’s been finals of the basket-ball teams, and a comic match. A team of men dressed as women. What a laugh, best bit of fun I’ve had for a long time, the band was also in attendance. It’s been red hot again. So to bed once more and wondering if we shall hear a raid again, we did last night, beside today. Jul. 20th. Yes! Rome was bombed all night. The brown bomber, (that by the way is the chap who is in charge of all the workers in the camp) his house was hit. There has been, Donkey carts, Lorries, all kind of vehicles evacuating people today. Tonight two days after it was bombed, there is still a big red glow in the sky. Jul. 21st. Today’s paper says there were hundreds of planes taking part, and a lot of damage done. They are very bitter about it, and think Rome should be left alone. They should have thought of that when England was bombed, although I’m sorry for the aged and children. Jul. 25th. Sunday lovely day. Service, we have had it in a new building, which is not used. Much better, a lot more attended a good service, and some good singing. Jul. 26th. A day to remember! 6.30am this morning, I was woken up by some of the farmers. They went up to the gate to go out, but were not allowed out. They came back all excited saying that Mosso (Mussolini) had left Italy. Royalists had taken over. More rumours we thought, wishing they would shut up and let us carry on with our sleep. Anyway roll call came, and there were all the guard’s in-groups all smiling and telling us what had happened, so we began to think there must be something in it. So what my feelings are, I don’t know, can it be that we will soon be free, or will they still fight on, or will Jerry take over. We will still have to wait and see what tomorrow brings, and hope and pray that God will bring peace. Jul.27th. The news is that Hassim (no explanation) are out of it, but the war carries on. Jul. 28th. -9th. Rumours of all kinds, Italy out of the war. Peace signed at various times. Mosso assassinated Jul. 30th. We think that something is going on. We hope peace talks; we know that it takes time. Meanwhile the paper says the war still goes on. I think we will know our fate in a month. Parcels one between four. No more until some comes in. A lot of sports gear has come from the Red Cross, and the Ities have destroyed most of it. Cricket balls cut open. Bat handles cut off, out of 200 Ping-Pong balls, only threeTo advertise callis 01302 15 left whole. Footballs have come, please but there no place 532676 to play or 07912 643010 Jul. 31st. Hair cut. News from Haxey Church of England Primary School It may have been the end of the school term but there was not slowing down for the children at school. Before they could even think about their well deserved Christmas break, there was important business to take care of - raising money for Children in Need, Advent service, Christmas Parties, School trips, a visit from Santa, The Key Stage 1 Nativity and the finale of Carols at St Nicholas Church! The children donned their spottiest attire in exchange for a £1 donation, and brought in cakes to sell for Children in Need back in November. They raised an absolutely staggering amount - £395.80!! Thank you to all who supported this event, the money we raised will go straight to those who desperately need it. The children enjoyed our annual advent service up at St Nicholas Church, a very important date in the Christian calendar. Parents and carers are always welcome to attend any service we have up at Church. There is a small pay area for younger children at the far side opposite the entrance to keep little ones entertained. Our wonderful PTFA ran our ever popular Winter Fayre. Our fabulous choir sang hymns, there were plenty of seasonal refreshments, Christmas crafts for sale, regular tombolas, and fab crafty activities for the children. With the support of our amazing parents and friends who not only offered donations, but also attended our event, we raised an incredible £1205!!! These essential funds go directly back into school for the benefit of our children, be it for books or IT equipment, every penny supplements their learning journey. Our amazing parents also donated items for our popular themed hamper raffle, and to date sales have exceeded £600. Winners will be contacted once the raffle has been drawn. Year 3 and 4 were treated to a school trip to The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe just before the Christmas break. They watched a special screening on 'The Snowman', and what a magical time of year to watch it, especially as it was supported by a live orchestra! The children in FS2, year 1 and year 2 put on an amazing performance of this year's nativity 'Prickly Hay'. They had the audience toe tapping along to the catchy songs, and applauding the performers who were incredible. Everyone in the audience raved about how fantastic the play was. Massive thanks to our staff who choreographed and directed the show on par with a West End production! Santa visited school on 8th December in his special grotto that was expertly decorated by our resident elves, AKA the PTFA! Each child had the opportunity to have a chat with the man in red, a souvenir photo and was given a gift. The children were buzzing all afternoon! All classes had the opportunity to let their hair down on the class party afternoons, with food gratefully received from parents and carers. They played party games and danced to some Christmas tunes, putting the children in a Christmassy mood! School would like to thank parents who took the time to donate food and Christmas presents to those less fortunate than ourselves, who often struggle over the festive period. The items donated were taken to The Forge and would truly make a difference to those who need them most. Finally, out last day of term saw children, parents, carers and friends attend at St Nicholas Church for a carol service, a fitting end to the term.

Despite the inclement weather, the Christmas lights in Misterton were switched on by Joy Johnson, Misterton’s Citizen of the Year. She is seen here with Santa who came on a visit from the North Notts Lions. Chairman of the Misterton Parish Council, Councilor Barry Cooper, said that he was pleased with the turnout and thanked the Lights Committee for all their hard work in producing the event. Among the attractions were the Idle Missedatones providing the music, Pie Perfection with pie and peas and other stall holders. He also thanked the Church for their co-operation in organizing the evening.

Volunteer, and change your future!
So why volunteer? All sorts of people volunteer for many different reasons, but one thing that unites them, is they find it challenging, rewarding and fun. The Scout Association, as one of the UK’s largest youth organisations is well known for what we offer young people. But our volunteers get a lot out of the experience too. Learning new skills, making new friends, and seeing young people grow and develop, which is very rewarding. Locally here in Isle of Axholme, Scouting is growing and making a big impression, much of this is being achieved by us having the right people in the right places. Every adult volunteer in Scouting gets something different out of the experience of volunteering with us. Building up new skills, seeing the benefit young people get from the activities or even just giving something back to their community. Speak to anyone of our current volunteers and each will have their own story. Mandy – “From coming down to help out early on at a Beaver meeting, I have really enjoyed helping Scouting, Know it sounds corny, but I have gained a lot, becoming an Assistant Beaver Leader, then making a real jump to taking on the Group Scout Leaders role. By day I am a health care worker, working with teenage mums. The great thing about being the Group Scout Leader, my work is flexible to meet the needs of my clients, and the Group Scout Leader role allows me to volunteer flexibly as well. The difference Scouting has made to my family, and the members of the group, it great to see everyone getting a buzz from some fun activities.” Volunteering with the Scouts has some great benefits as well, and some which are really tangible, such as, adults who complete their training are eligible for membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management (looks great on the CV!). Plus over 40% of employers say that Scouting makes people more employable. Plus adult volunteers receive great privileges from some of our partners. Want to find out more about volunteering in a manager role with the Scouts contact stuart.nimmo@scouts.org.uk or call 01484 519305. Interested in other opportunities with us look at www.scouts.org.uk/join
