Community News Local husband and wife team have been fundraising since June 2018, trying to raise valuable funds for Weston Park Hospital in memory of Jonathan Exton.
Debbie says “The challenge was for myself and my husband Andy to run a 10k race every month for the rest of the year. I had ran a bit previously but Andy was quite new to running and so definitely a challenge for him”.
“For those who know me, I started running nearly 18months ago and it certainly didn’t come naturally! But I have persevered and Christmas 2017 I managed to persuade Andy to give it a go too! So we both signed up for three 10k races one in June, September and November to try and raise some funds to help Weston Park Hospital. Someone agreed to donate if we did one every month for the rest of the year ..... seemed like an easy challenge at first - the hot summer didn't enter our heads and made if very hard” “A big thanks to everyone who has donated to this worthy cause, we really appreciate it”.

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club walk the 1st or 2nd Sunday in every month and we welcome new members. We are not a competitive bunch and our walks are for fun and enjoyment of our beautiful countryside. All our walks are led by experienced leaders and we offer two each month, one of around 8 miles or a slightly longer one of 11 to 13 miles. We set off from Waterdale in Doncaster by private coach and travel to the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District or other equally lovely places. If you fancy joining us, our January walk takes place on the 13th and we will be walking from Harewood to Otley. If you can't make it in January why not join us on 10th February when we are off to The Peak District. It`s a great way to meet likeminded people, enjoy our countryside and get a little bit fitter at the same time! For more information, you can find us at http:// www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk/ or search Facebook for Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club"

Epworth and District Flower Club Open Meeting November 2018 Approximately 120 ladies sat expectantly in the hall of South Axholme Academy to see Andrew Grisewood present his demonstration “Unwrap the Season”. The audience was welcomed by Anne Everatt and an invitation to join the club or attend as a visitor was extended to all. Thanks were expressed to everyone who had helped with preparation and especially the member of staff of South Axholme Academy who had helped with technical logistics. Anne also reminded the audience that the proceeds would be going to the Alzheimer’s Society this year. Then, with a musical fanfare, Andrew Grisewood in his glittery shirt and accompanying bling was welcomed onto the bare stage. Olly his assistant was welcomed too. Andrew began with a frame holding two baskets with glittery branches and he added trailing ivy, cascading variegated holly, polystichum fern and Paddy’s pride foliage before inserting green chrysanthemums, red hypericum berries, champagne carnations and a deeper shade of cream carnations with a pink tinge. Andrew’s commentary included information about the song of the Twelve Days of Christmas and to complete his arrangement Andrew added some vintage appearance pears to suggest the partridge in a pear tree. As the musical accompaniment played Olly brought in a further similar arrangement making a stunning, opening, three tier display with a partridge apparently sitting on a nest on the top tier. Next Andrew used a basic looking plant pot with an erect substantial tree branch on which hung a large decorative red bell. To create a different tree shape Andrew showed the audience, with the help of Olly, how to attach small branches of ilex berries with brown cable ties. He proceeded to add a red velvet bow which he made so rapidly, imitation poinsettias, and robins. He theme was retro and he placed the arrangement beside an old fashioned street lamp and a model Santa. He even introduced the old fashioned Fairy liquid bottle on which many Santas have been produced, Blue Peter style. Much applause and more music….delightful. For the third arrangement Andrew had a large rectangular upright frame onto which were already attached three large branches of spruce sprayed to appear like snowflakes. There was also a roughly horizontal piece of driftwood. Around these mechanics Andrew positioned western hemlock branches, noble fern, senecio and white sprayed ivy leaves. Once positioned beneath another similar arrangement tiny lights were lit creating a very cool effect surmounted by a crescent of moon. Next was a large snow scene dome. Another reminder of the past. Andrew proceeded to use a length of rubus, some leather leaf fern and asparagus all of which were sprayed in tones of gold or white. For his finale Andrew produced a metal crown frame to represent the first of the three kings. He used beautiful Chinese pheasant feathers to produce a plume effect and continued to insert pale orange orchids and similar shaded anthurium flowers.
In January the Flower Club will have a seasonal meal at the Epworth Tap and the meeting on 11th February 2019 will be in the usual meeting place of the Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30pm and will be the A.G.M. when scrapbooks will be on display. We hope you feel encouraged to join us.

I am please to announce that the total collected for the 2018 Poppy Appeal for Haxey and Westwoodside was ÂŁ3246.73, so many thanks to all those who contributed. This was a little less than last year, but I am aware that so many more outlets throughout the area were selling poppies this year, so I expect the regional total to be excellent. Unfortunately, a few of our regular poppy volunteers were unable to help out this year so I will be asking for a few more volunteers ready for next years appeal- so watch this space. Kind regards Margaret Riles (Poppy Appeal Organiser)

News from Haxey Church Of England Primary School We are hurtling towards the end of term at great knots, with plenty going on in school! The annual Winter Fayre kicked off our festive season, with children and visitors treated to a variety of stalls, games and festive themed activities. Our school choir treated us to a performance (the first one for our younger members), and it was a great opportunity for them to practice ready for Young Voices next month in Sheffield. There was also entertainment from ENA dance who also had a Christmassy theme to their performance as they wore their Christmas jumpers to entertain us. We hope you enjoyed the fayre if you came, it was good to see school so busy. The PTFA raised a staggering £1450, so massive thanks to all who supported us especially those who donated prizes and made cakes. The money will be used to support our children in their educational journey. At the time of writing, FS 2, and years 1 & 2 are busy rehearsing for the annual winter term interpretation of the Nativity. This year it is titled 'Christmas around the world and sees popular literary characters Biff, Chip and Kipper magically travel via a glowing key to different countries. Whilst there, they look at how different cultures celebrate Christmas. For such young children (7 and below), they have really grasped their inner performer and have worked so very hard to learn their lines and lots of songs. We hope those of you lucky enough to have got your hands on a ticket have enjoyed watching them. At the latter end of November the children at school 'wore their spots' in exchange for a pound to raise vital funds for BBC Children in need. They raised £350 in total, and our years 3 and 4 raised £100.30 alone by covering a Pudsey Bear picture with change brought in by the children. Well done everyone!! Years 3 and 4 have certainly been busy as they attended at South Axholme for a multi-skills afternoon recently. They travelled around in groups and visited a variety of 'stations' each focussing on a different skill or sport. They had a great deal of fun and it was great to leave the class room and do some learning in the great outdoors. You may remember a group of children from school who entered their team 'Haxey Helpers' in the Lifestyle project. In our last news we reported that they had been successful in winning a prize, after been narrowed down to the last 500 children after the thousands that entered. We are pleased to announce that they have won a holiday to PGL Wales, well done boys! From everyone at Haxey Church of England Primary, we wish you a Happy New Year
