Welcome to the January issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow and wishing all our readers a Happy and prosperous New Year! Crowle Pavilion will be the venue on Sunday February 2nd 2020 for an afternoon of lively Americanstyle dancing. The event will begin with an American contradance workshop when Janet Porter, event organiser, will teach some basic contra moves and easy contra dances. After a break for tea and biscuits there will be social and country dancing with an American twist to the rhythmic music of The Polka Dots Barn Dance Band. Janet said: “If you enjoy country dancing, barn dancing or ceilidhs, you’ll love American Contra Dancing. They all involve friendly social dancing, usually in set formation, and are lively, not too difficult and great fun. “ The dance event is aimed at adults or young people aged 10yrs or over who may have some experience of country dancing or just be very keen to learn and have fun. It starts at 2.30pm (doors 2.15) and finishes 5.30. Entry is £3 including tea and biscuits. Phone or text Janet on 07939 032224 for more info or to reserve a place, or just pay at the event.

Great end to the season at Epworth Old Rectory The 16th, saw the final event of the 2019 season at the Rectory, and what a fantastic ending it was. The house was full of brilliant hand crafted goods to buy for Christmas gifts, or simply to treat oneself. It began with a bit of a rush, and volunteers on site by 8am to help prepare the house for the stall holders to start setting up at 8-30 ready for opening at 10am. All was done ready for the first customer who arrived dead on the dot of 10am to be followed by a steady stream of visitors until the doors closed at 3-30 pm. As the stall holders were packing away a disappointed visitor turned up - just a short 15 minutes too late. The Santa post box was kept fairly busy, and Santa and his elves will be equally busy making sure all the letters are answered, and we hope all the children are granted their wishes, as long as they don't end up on the naughty list that is! The refectory was busy all day serving up tea, coffee and fruit punch alongside a magnificent selection of cakes and sausage rolls, all made by volunteers from the Rectory. We obviously have a large number of good bakers who give of their time, and money, to help raise the funds for the continued running of the rectory so that you, our visitors, can continue to come here during the season to hear the inspiring story of the Wesley Family. One of those good bakers is none other than Sandra, our house keeper, who bakes a magnificent Christmas cake each year for the "Guess the Weight of the Cake" competition, the prize being the cake itself, which was won by Mr John Scorer from Epworth this year. I'm sure he and his family will enjoy eating it. Shaun from Whisker Hills Pottery, brought along his guitar and mandolin, and he and Goff spent a couple of hours serenading the stall holders and visitors alike with a wide selection of music which was declared to be very enjoyable by many of the listeners. So many different activities and so many widely varying stalls made this a really good event, and as I recognised quite a few faces from last year, one that visitors consider good enough to make return visits. although this is the last event for this season, the rectory isn't closed altogether - the staff and volunteers will be working hard behind the scenes to prepare exhibitions and events for next year, as well as ensuring that the Rectory itself is in good enough shape to welcome all our visitors whether local, from other parts of the UK, or from overseas. If you would like to be a part of the team who look after our visitors, or the building and gardens, you can still volunteer now by contacting our manager, Gillian Crawley on 01427 672268. e-mail manager@epwortholdrectory.org.uk, or even visit our website or facebook page. Epworth Music Day 2020 Update This year’s Epworth Music Day falls on Saturday 20 June and we are starting to put the plan together to make it as much as success as it was last year. Once again we will be putting together a daytime programme across 10 outdoor stages – with indoor alternatives if it is wet – and 3 indoor venues. We’ll be organising an evening concert in St Andrew’s Church, as well as an evening ceilidh in the Imperial Hall. The Queen’s Head, The Old School Inn, and Jinksey’s Bar in the Red Lion will also be organising their own evening concerts. Last June we attracted over 50 different groups of performers across a wide range of musical genres, and we hope to be able to provide a platform for a similar array of musical talent in 2020. If you would like to perform at Epworth Music Day 2020, we would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Next year we will be shutting some of the roads in the centre of Epworth to help make the area safer to stroll about in. We would welcome anyone who would like to help to steward the event on the day, including some at the barriers at the road closures. So, put the date in your diary and spread the word! If you can help or want to join in please email peter.barnard@me.com or call Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

LIGHTING UP THE VILLAGE FOR CHRISTMAS Misterton Parish Council’s Christmas lights switch-on was on Friday 6 December on Church Meadow. The Parish Council’s Junior Citizen of the Year, Victoria Taylor, did the honours. Victoria won the Parish Council’s under-18s Citizen of the Year award for her years of volunteering at Misterton Library, and other charity work. Santa paid his customary visit; Hatfield Brass Band played carols and seasonal music; and mulled wine and soft drinks were provided by the Parish Council. Other refreshments were available as well as a range of stalls. Proceeds on the evening go to the Parish Council’s nominated charities: Five Villages First Responders and the Parish Church. Winning entries to the Parish Council’s annual Christmas competition were on display in the Parish Church. This year, the theme was to design a Christmas card. There were so many excellent entries from the under-16s that the Parish Council awarded an extra prize. The two under-16 winners were Carys Bishop and Sian Talbot; the over-16 winner was Ann Miller. Pictured is ‘therapy’ pony, Biscuit, with Jed from Ponies 'n' Pals and Santa.

They knocked 'Em Dead The Isle choral singers certainly did knock 'em dead at their concert held at Epworth Wesley Memorial Church on Sunday evening, 13th October. I do have to halt and make an apology and correct a statement from my last news when I said this was their last concert of this season - it isn't - there are two more to come before Christmas, one on the 26th October and another on the 7th December, both at St Andrews Church in Epworth. The concert was a varied programme, with audience participation in three of the items, one of which was Oh Susanna with s special guest, local musician John Windle playing banjo. John is the chairman of Ep'th Folk, a local music group. Oh Susanna was specifically included because the concert was in honour of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Susanna Wesley, mother of John and Charles the founders of the Methodist Church. it was a bright lively performance from all, the choir, John, and the audience. It is hard to pick out the highlights of the concert - there were so many which touched a chord and pulled on the heartstrings, or set the toes tapping, or simply left one awestruck. One was a song titled "Deep River" with Rev. Angy Long as soloist. Her voice lifted this simple African American Spiritual about slavery and the chance of freedom into a completely different realm, especially when one considers that slavery still exists, even here, in the 21st century. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, with Parry accompanying on the organ took many back to their early piano lessons, and school choir days with the beautiful lilting offering. This was quickly followed by another reminder of school days with Amo Amas Amat, a flashback to those days conjugating Latin verbs as Amo - to love was always the very first one to be learned and still sticks in the brain 60 years on. This was followed by Kyrie and then came the turn of another guest musician, Matthew Fields, who gave us a beautifully haunting rendition of Tchaikovsky's "Melode". After the interval the audience was treated to three more very different songs, but all great in their own different way and treatment by the choir. This just before the appearance of the next guest musician, Miss Lydia Wang, a student at John Leggott College who gave us two pieces on cello, "Adoration" by Borowski, and Bach's "Gigue from Suite No 3" . Her first offering was spine tinglingly good and set off the lively dance music which followed. I am sure both Lydia and Matthew have a future in the world of music. "The Road Home" by Michael Dennis Browne was a wistful performance bringing out the nostalgia of someone far away from home and longing to return. The concert ended with "Oh Susanna" followed by a Charles Wesley Hymn, both of which included the audience. A lovely evening of fantastic music, but sadly not the really large audience that the Singers were hoping for. Ms Gillian Crawley, manager of Epworth Old Rectory, ended the evening with thanking the performers and explaining that the funds raised from the event were to be donated to a new project at the Rectory, decorating another of the rooms using a specially made wallpaper, printed with a design worked out from a fragment of wallpaper found in a cupboard, dated to the time of residence of the Wesley family. The evening finally ended with the audience and performers adjourning to the church hall for refreshments. As always, anyone with time to spare during the week, or on Saturday, we need volunteers to help with guiding visitors around the house, or helping in the gift shop. Training for both roles will be provided for any new volunteers. Please contact Gillian on 01427 872268 for more information, or call in and see us on any day we are open. Cath Fordham

Your 2020 success starts with Slimming World If you would love to slim down and feel better about yourself this January, groups in and around Scunthorpe are inviting you to join them and start your success in 2020. Having celebrated 50 years in 2019, Slimming World want to start the next 50 years with a bang. This means everyone gets to feel the same feeling members experience every week in a slimming world group. One lady who is planning on making 2020 her year is Miss Slinky Ashby 2019, Janet. Janet is a sprightly 69 year old who joined Slimming World on 31st December 2017 after her medical team told her that she had a serious condition and needed an operation. Unfortunately the consultant wasn't happy to operate on Janet at her current weight. Her consultant wanted to monitor her condition, but knowing it was life threatening, Janet took the decision to walk into her local Slimming World group. Janet joined Yaddlethorpe on New Years Eve 2017 and lost 7lbs in her first two weeks. Not knowing what to expect Janet quickly learned that although she didn’t like cooking, Slimming World could still work for her. Her meals are often found in the freezers at Iceland which exclusively stocks the Slimming World range. All syn free and delicious. Janet's favourite meals include the Slimming World Chicken Risotto and Char Sui Pork. Alongside that she can indulge herself as a self confessed fruitaholic. Janet told her Slimming World consultant that she needed to lose weight because not only was this a very serious condition but a side effect of this was that her lungs essentially shut down, making it impossible for her to continue with her passion for singing. Janet said ‘Slimming World proved to be the answer. Now, I wasnt afraid to die. My son, my only child, had died a few years previously’ however ‘I wanted to sing again - something that’s impossible with collapsed lungs!’ With the support of her consultant and her group, (as well as a box of Slimming Worlds own fruit and nut hi fi bars every group night) Janet went on to lose 3 stone 8 lbs and in 2019 was able to have her life saving operation to correct Intrathoracic stomach caused by a giant hernia. Would her lungs recover after so long a collapse? They did! Now Janet is singing in the church choir and making her son proud of her. If anyone in Scunthorpe and its surrounding areas are thinking of embarking on a weight-loss journey this January, Slimming World is definitely the place to be – not only do they have five decades of experience helping millions of people to lose weight, but are set to make 2020 their best year yet. Janet's Slimming World Consultant and local manager, Tina says: “Whilst everyone has their sights set on Christmas festivities, at Slimming World we always joke that we look forward to January, because watching existing and new members achieving fabulous weight losses without feeling hungry or deprived never fails to make us feel privileged to be in our role. We know there is no such thing as a quick fix, but with our amazing Food Optimising plan and the fun and empathy found in our groups, we give our members the very best chance to lose weight and become healthy, change their lives and grow in confidence – without ever needing to feel hungry.” To find your nearest group check out 18 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding slimmingworld.co.uk for details.

It’s official, the region’s Best Countryside Wedding Venue 2020 as voted for and judged at The Wedding Industry Awards (TWIA) is Hirst Priory! The elegant Georgian manor house is tucked away in 18 acres of private grounds near Crowle on the Isle of Axholme. It was one of the region’s hidden and fading gems until managing director Hazel Wheatley began the five year journey to restore its regal charm and turn it in to a multi-award winning wedding venue. TWIA is the only regional and national client voted awards in the wedding industry. It was set up to recognise excellent wedding suppliers and to help anyone organising a wedding find the best suppliers. The latest Hirst Priory success was in the East Midlands region where they beat twelve high quality finalists coming from across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. Hazel Wheatley said, “It is a stunning achievement to win this award against such strong competition. We owe a big thank you to our wonderful couples who were married with us during 2018/19 who voted for us and provided glowing testimonies to the judges of how we looked after them and how much they love Hirst Priory!” If you are looking for the very best venue for your big day spaces for 2020 weddings are limited but still available, as are 2021/22 dates. Epworth and District Flower Club’s Open Meeting Almost 200 tickets had been sold for the Flower Demonstration to be given by Nick Grounds, a National Demonstrator. As a result, scores of (mainly) ladies flocked to the school hall of South Axholme Academy on Monday 11th November and anticipated an interesting evening. After a welcome by Anne Everatt the club’s current Chairman, Nick appeared on stage wearing an apron which created a very business-like approach. He began quite dramatically with the rendition of a poem by Pam Ayres “Goodwill to Men – Give us your Money”. In front of him was a salting pan which he used to create the first arrangement. The next anecdote was about a large lobster pot from Aldborough beach. This arrangement was completed with Norma Jean roses, large white flowers with a perfume. Nick switched on tiny white fairy lights inside the pot to a round of applause. The very simple third arrangement was created using a ring and again liatris standing tall but this time longiflorum lilies in very tight bud were inserted too. Extremely simple but very stunning. An enormous piece of driftwood appeared on the stage next. Spaced along the length were silver glittery baubles attached with silver wire. Nick added lime green shamrock chrysanthemums but he did at that point emphasise how we should look in more depth at things instead of superficially glancing. He then proceeded to illuminate the long, horizontal effect with tiny Christmas lights. The penultimate arrangement was created on a silver birch log with erect branches inserted. The branches had tiny fir cones attached and also attached to the log were orchid tubes into which Nick placed germini (small gerbera). He used almost white flowers with dark eyes, and a small number of carnations and to break the straight height effect the flowers were interspersed with umbrella fern. Yet another simple modern stunning arrangement. Anne Everatt thanked Nick for such a beautiful displays and made reference to his humour and creative talent and reiterated how we must all learn to look in more depth at what we see. The Epworth and District Flower Club meets at Haxey on the second Monday each month. We use the Stephen Jones Community hall from 7.30pm and we welcome visitors and new members. The next meeting will be the A.G.M. on Monday, 10th February 2020. I hope your appetite has been whetted.

Reception class Westwoodside CE Primary
The children in Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes) at Westwoodside Primary Academy had a lovely time visiting the over 60's dominoes club in the village hall. The children sang an action song ‘Oats and Beans and Barley Grow’ to the grown ups, before giving out the harvest bags which we had prepared in school the day before. A lovely time was had by all!

Foundation children all had a super morning completing a sponsored 'Jim, Jam, Jog!' The rain held off enough to run around the playground...some children completed over 8 laps! After eating yummy jam on toast the children then enjoyed our final pre-pedal session. Over the past five weeks the children have gained so much in confidence and skill on their balance bikes.
