Welcome to the January issue of the Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow and what a year! 2020, here is a short round up! Australian bushfires, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family, COVID-19 pandemic, stock market crash, black lives matter protests, Joe Biden becomes president and the good news of a 90 year old British grandmother receiving the first jab against COVID-19. I think we can all safely say we will put 2020 behind us and hopefully a more prosperous new year ahead! Looking ahead to January, Lindsey lodge have launched ‘Jog on January’ details are on page 27. Visit Jog On January Facebook group, full of daily fitness challenges, work out videos, health tips and encouragement from other participants. All you need to do is be active for 31 days, whether you choose to jog, dance, run walk or peddle the choice is yours. The Scunthorpe-based hospice called off its fundraising activities at the start of the pandemic and warned it could have a "devastating impact" on the charity, which relies on donations. Lindsey Lodge Hospice has appealed for help as it expects to lose more than half a million pounds in funding during the coronavirus crisis.
Based in the Isle of Axholme
The Arrow team wish everyone a Happy and Safe New Year. The deadline for the February issue is Thursday 14th January for delivery by Sunday 31st January Enjoy the read and keep safe!

Protect yourself on social media Many of us use social media every day without giving a second thought to our privacy or our vulnerability to cyber-crime. The following tips aim to keep you safe online. Avoid publishing any identifying information about yourself that could be used by scammers - e.g. phone numbers, your address or birthday. Make it difficult for potential hackers by using strong passwords with symbols and numbers. Review and edit your privacy features on social media sites to ensure that only your friends can access your profile. Consider the permanence of online content - don't post anything that may later embarrass you or someone else. (You never know who might be looking at your page e.g. a prospective employer.) Never post comments that are abusive or may cause offence. Be on your guard against phishing scams, including fake friend requests and posts from individuals or companies inviting you to visit other pages or sites. If you do get caught up in a scam, make sure you remove any corresponding likes and app permissions from your account. Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall. Unpleasant comments about people on social media sites aren't dealt with by the police, unless there is a criminal offence involved. Offences may include threats to kill, threats to cause damage, criminal conduct amounting to harassment and comments that incite racial hatred, violence or rioting. If you have been affected by any of these offences, please call Humberside Police on 101 to report it. Regarding unpleasant or inappropriate posts, you should first contact the social media site on which the comments have been made and ask for assistance. If you think you have been libelled to an extent that you wish to take action, please consult with a solicitor in the first instance. You can access further information online using this link : https://www.humberside.police.uk/usingsocial-media-responsibly

A Happy New Year from Haxey Parish Council Please stay safe and adhere to Government Guidance Remembrance Day 2020 Remembrancetide this year was quite different! Commemorative celebrations were held, complying with Covid 19 regulations, facemasks, social distancing and full risk assessments. Representative from uniformed groups and other organisations were invited to lay wreaths at both ceremonies, St Nicholas Church on Sunday 8th November as a wholly outdoor service, also the annual commemoration at the Soldier Monument on Armistice Day 11th November. Rev Zammit officiated at both events, with Samantha Cook honouring us with her presence again to play Last Post and Reveille. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Next year we celebrate 100 years of The Royal Legion Poppy Appeal, fund raising will be an all-year event. Ideas and support for events would be gratefully appreciated.

MISTERTON AUTHOR COMPLETES CHILDREN’S BOOK ABOUT BEREAVEMENT IN LOCKDOWN – HELPING HIS OWN LOSS When the country went into lockdown in March, it would have been easy for Ric Hart to sink into depression. He had lost his wife, Jade, just after the birth of their son, Hugo, in 2018. Instead, he spent the time writing a book for Hugo – and other young children - about bereavement. Now the book has been published and is finding new readers as children and families come to terms with losing loved ones to Coronavirus. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is written as a poem and linked by colourful illustrations to capture moments, memories, and feelings around the loss of Hugo’s mummy. It might just provide some help with a little one’s loss. Proceeds of the book go to Cruse, the bereavement care charity. Now Ric has presented copies to Misterton Library (pictured in the Library, and with his son, Hugo). The books will be absorbed into stock and will be available to readers across the county. A copy has been donated to Misterton Primary School. Doncaster Council is to provide a copy of the book for each of its staffed libraries, and a copy for its school library service. The title has been sent to Notts County Council in the hope that it, too, will see the value of the book, particularly at this time of loss due to Coronavirus. Ric is two years into his journey as a single parent and widower and has found huge inspiration, peace, and acceptance of the loss of his wife by keeping her memory alive through the creation of his books. And during the second lockdown, Ric has been working on a follow-on book, Hugo and Daddy’s Thailand Adventures. It will be published in early 2021 and will involve a link-up with a kids’ adventure charity, which will benefit from the proceeds. Then, in February 2021, Ric will publish an autobiography of his life with Jade, Pupy Love. February 14 - Valentine’s Day - is when they met in 2002 and when, in 2018, Jade had her 20-week scan and they found she was expecting Hugo. Hugo and Daddy’s Night-time Adventures is in paperback, retails at £5.99, and is available from Amazon. Another special project that Ric did in lockdown was on Jade’s website. It brings together images of Jade that so many have not seen for friends and family to share and come together. This also helped him with his own therapy, creating this in memory of Jade. The end of 2020 has been a very busy time in school! This started with us supporting Children in Need in our annual Be Spotty or Sporty non-uniform day – each class took part in the end of the Joe Wickes 24 hour work out marathon, and participated in well-being activities throughout the day. A special mention to Tia in Year 6 who set up her own sponsored walk and raised £150 to go to this fantastic cause – well done, Tia! Christmas in school has looked a little different to usual this year, but we have still celebrated in our class bubbles. One of the busiest days saw us all wearing our Christmas jumpers, enjoying Christmas lunch ( a huge thank you to our fabulous team in the school kitchen – everyone loved their lunch and the chocolate pudding was a big hit!), recording our class carols for our virtual carol concert, and finally meeting Santa!! He flew in to meet each class in the hall and sent everybody a letter wishing them a Happy Christmas. Thank you to our hard working PTFA for setting this up with Santa – all the classes were thrilled to see him! F2, Year 1 and Year 2 all put on class performances – F2 told a traditional nativity story, and for Years 1 and 2 there was a slightly different take on it as they performed “The Christmas Gift”, about a group of children who get woken by an angel who leads them to find the new born baby, Jesus. Some fantastic singing and performing from all classes! Year 6 Roar Team We are very proud to announce that Years 5 and 6 competed once again in ROAR 2020, a competition for “future innovators and entrepreneurs” to develop ideas that will in some way improve the world. Lily, Morgan and Rhianna from Year 6 won the in-school heats to go forward to the North of England finals, and they were thrilled to be placed third! Their invention – H20 To Go – is a portable water filter system that showed real creativity and an understanding of global problems. Thank you to Lions Clubs International for their support of Haxey Primary in this annual event. From the Haxey Primary family, we wish you all a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2021!

Lindsey Lodge Hospice has launched its ‘Jog on January’ fitness challenge in a bid to motivate people to be active for 31 days and raise vital funds to help it continue to support local patients and their families who are living with a life limiting illness. Participants are encouraged to keep active for 31 days in January however they choose – whether it’s walking, running, dancing or swimming. By completing the challenge and raising £31 for Lindsey Lodge, participants will earn a bespoke Jog on January medal. The 28-year-old Hospice has seen a 98% rise in the number of admissions to its vital Inpatient palliative care services in the last five years. He added: “While the majority of our fundraising activities have been put on hold due to Covid-19, Jog on January gives people the opportunity to support Lindsey Lodge from the comfort of their own homes. “Even by simply registering to take part, you’ll be making a difference to our patients. But if each participant could then raise just £1 sponsorship a day for 31 days, we could raise a staggering amount for the Hospice!” For a £15 registration fee, participants will receive their official ‘Jog on January’ T shirt, which features a calendar design for them to tick off each day as they complete their exercise. They will also be given access to the official Jog on January Facebook group to share their progress with other participants. Peter said: “There’s no minimum or maximum age limit, so the whole family can get involved. Jog, run, walk, swim, dance or jump - it’s entirely your choice, all you need to do is keep moving every day! For the little ones, Jog on Juniors is just £7.50 (t-shirt not included). “The more active you are and the more sponsorship you raise will see you reaping rewards, as well as making a real difference in your local community.”
