The Royal British Legion News Very many thanks to all who contributed to this year’s Poppy Appeal in Haxey. £3529.08 was donated. Over £100 more than last year. It is through the continued work of our House to House collectors together with ‘Static Point’ collection tins and donations from St Nicholas Church and the Parish Council that we have continued to increase our giving each year. I have been the Local Organiser for the last 10years and have been happy to do the work with the help of my husband. For the last few years Annette and Claire Laverack have helped us and I am pleased to say that Claire has agreed to take over the work of Local Organiser in 2018. Her husband will also be helping her. It is so good to have the enthusiasm of younger people to carry on with the work and my good wishes and thanks go to Claire. Thank you for your support in the past and I urge you to support your new Organiser next year. Elaine Dunford

Become a Dementia Friend We will all know at some time in our lives, or already know, someone with dementia. The Patient Participation Group at South Axholme Practice have teamed up with Alzheimer’s Society to show anyone who is interested how to become a Dementia Friend. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action, doing the small things that make a difference. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. In fact, the pupils at South Axholme Academy have become Dementia Friends, as well as all the staff at South Axholme Practice. Now it is your turn! Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about Dementia Friends to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. This is the opportunity for you to come along and become a Dementia Friend. During this friendly and interactive session, you will increase your understanding of dementia, and think about the small things that you can do to make a difference to people affected by dementia in our community. It doesn’t take long, about an hour, and you will be most welcome at the Foreman Carter Centre, Westwoodside Playing Fields, Akeferry Road on 12th January 2018 at 1.30pm If you are interested in attending please email saxppg@gmail.com or phone 07535 21 96 94

This gorgeous girl is Wilma, a 5 year old Mastiff cross Shar Pei who has recently come into the Rescue, and is looking for her new home. Wilma is quite a shy, nervous girl when she first meets people, but once she gets to know you, she is a lovely, affectionate dog. She would be best in a home with experience of large breeds and with no young children, so that she can build up her confidence. She seems fine with other dogs so far. Wilma is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to come and meet her, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

New From Haxey Church of England Primary School Happy New Year from us all here at Haxey Church of England Primary School, where the village kicks off the traditional game of the Haxey Hood on Saturday 6th January. This is one of the oldest traditions in the country, and is unique in nature. Please come and join the village to watch, or if you're brave enough join in this ancient game. We were lucky enough last year to welcome the hood itself, along with the boggins and fool into our school. We have had an extremely busy end of year at school, with our reception and key stage 1 children performing our take on The Nativity 'The Landlord's Cat' to parents, carers and other pupils. We would like to say a hearty congratulations to all of our performers who were absolutely brilliant, you should be very proud of yourselves. A massive thank you also to the staff who arrange, choreograph and organise the performances, and also to those who came to see it and for supporting our school. The pupils were up at St Nicholas Church twice this last month. Our first visit was for our advent service on 3rd December which was put on by our collective worship group. Our second visit held an air of excitement, for not only was it our annual Christmas service, but it was also our last day of term! The children were brilliant and sang out their hearts. We would like to thank all who attended, we hope you enjoyed the festivities. Our PTFA were busy again, holding their annual winter fayre which saw the usual games and some new ones too. There were also refreshments, a performance from ENA dance (Thanks Miss Nichola!), stall holders, crafts, our brilliant raffle hampers and beautiful Christmas themed sparkle jars (thanks Mrs Thorpe!) in all, £2000 was raised for the benefit of the children. The money will go towards kitting out another class with iPads. We would like to extend our thanks to Tesco at Gainsborough who were kind enough to donate items to our school for the fayre, a picture here with Will from the store who kindly dropped them off. The PTFA also assisted Santa in his annual visit to the school grotto, where each child had a chance to visit the man in red and whisper to him their gift requests. They also received a fantastic gift from him. Thank you Santa! On the subject of Christmas, each class enjoyed a class party which involved yummy food donated by parents and carers, and also party games too. There are some staff at our school who often go unrecognised, but play an integral role behind the scenes at our school. These being our catering staff and caretaker. We would like to says a massive thank you for all they do, for keeping School running (and most 26 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements importantly fed!)

The Crowle Entertainers are once again presenting their annual pantomime and this year they are taking a look at the classic story Treasure Island – but mixing it up with a celebrity game show!! There are lots of characters
from all your favourite fairy stories and pantomimes – Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Rapunzel, Maleficent, Mary Poppins and many more, together with the most colourful and eccentric band of pirates you are ever likely to see! Throw in a dame or two, a pantomime cow with a bit of a split personality, a few baddies and, of course, a wonderful good fairy who makes everyone's wishes come true...and you have a recipe for a fun, family panto with something to please everyone. Performances will take place on Saturday 13th January at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and on Sunday 14th January at 2.30pm at the Crowle Community Hall. Tickets, priced £5 and £3.50 for concessions are available from Crowle Tesco, the Regen Shop, Crowle or Fancyland in Epworth or by calling 01724 711212 or 01427 873947. Please note that there is an additional 50p charge for tickets bought on the door, so advance purchase or booking is highly advisable.

After weeks of careful preparation the evening of the Epworth and District Flower Club’s Open Evening arrived. There was an excited buzz of anticipation as the hall in South Axholme Academy filled almost to capacity……. a pleasing sign. The stage was set with a variety of festive items and at the side of the hall was a table manned by one or two members of the group and a young enthusiast and Jonathan Moseley himself. Guests were invited to purchase Christmas items to be used in their own festive arrangements. It was time to begin. Anne Everatt, the Chairman, welcomed the audience and reminded everyone that proceeds were going to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Jonathan was introduced as a Nationally recognised flower arranger and Floral Judge on BBC Television’s Big Allotment Challenge. Furthermore everyone was reminded that Jonathan had been invited to demonstrate at Epworth 25 years ago as his career was beginning. Jonathan began, saying how pleased he was to return to Epworth and how his career had developed since those days 25 years ago. He then demonstrated his skills with his first arrangement using amaryllis, which he slotted onto upright sticks. He talked of his love of Norwegian Blue Spruce for foliage and proceeded to use variegated holly and fan palms, cotoneaster and then red carnations, anthurium and gold glitter sprayed lotus heads. With additional red curled canes, dark black tie leaves and gold grevillea Jonathan concluded his first arrangement which he called “A touch of red”. He produced two very similar arrangements which he had prepared earlier. The second arrangement was named “Clashing Pinks” although the result was anything but clashing. The flowers used were peach gladioli, peach lilies, red carnations, gerbera and pink roses. In addition to the flowers Jonathan used laurel, fatsia, waxed apples, silver lotus heads and mini pineapple plants. Once more there was another similar arrangement produced from somewhere! Jonathan continued his evening with a green and white and silver arrangement incorporating cream gladioli and green chrysanthemums, tulips and orchids. Into this “Cold and Frosty” arrangement an unusual addition was “Moby Dick” which were rather similar to Chinese lanterns but green. Next Jonathan displayed his talents expertly creating small posies using dainty dark red chrysanthemums, roses, pittosporum and one or two more prepared flowers and foliage which he then sprayed with glitter. Some of these he placed in small containers in a Christmas tree frame with delightful Christmassy effect. What speed and skill! For his final display Jonathan produced a very large twig and rattan square frame. He incorporated twisted willow, golden curls, glittery red twigs and covered the mechanics with his favourite Norwegian Blue Spruce. His flowers included gladioli, red gerbera, roses and pale green anthurium. More waxed apples but crab apples this time and a little sparkle completed the demonstration but there were two more earlier prepared arrangements to give a finale to the proceedings! Jonathan’s commentary during the evening included explanations of how he had created the Palladian Bridge earlier this year at Chatsworth House. He told us of the terrible weather conditions experienced but how fortunate they had been in sustaining only minimal damage. He talked about his life as an ambassador for UCARE and as a British flower ambassador and of the interesting experiences he has had because of his love of flowers. He also reminded us of the importance of encouraging young people such as the young helper in the audience and recruiting them into floristry. Anne Everatt then gave the vote of thanks. She echoed the thoughts of many by saying the arrangements were breathtaking and the audience was invited to look more closely at the flowers. Finally, the raffle was drawn. Jonathan had produced 12 arrangements and the posies. Several lucky winners had the enjoyable task of attempting to transport their prize home! and no-one left empty handed as all were given a festive bag containing 5 dwarf tulip bulbs as a memento of the evening. It has become evident that approximately £1000 will be donated to the Air Ambulance so in addition to a wonderful evening, enjoyed by such a large audience there will be people who benefit in unexpected circumstances. If you wish to join the Epworth and District Flower Club, we meet on the second Monday of each month in the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey at 7.30pm. The AGM will be held on 12th February and we usually display scrap books of past events. There will also be an accurate report of the results. We should 32 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements be pleased to welcome you.
JUNIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR SWITCHES ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Misterton Parish Council’s Junior Citizen of the Year, Oliver Cousin-Stirk, switched on the village Christmas lights on Church Meadow and Windmill Garden on Friday 1 December. Oliver won the accolade after helping a resident who had fallen in the street, and staying with her until the emergency services arrived. Before the switch-on, he and his mother, Helen Cousin, had judged the Christmas Tree competition. First prize went to first-time entrant, Sure Start, (pictured) with Highly Commended rosettes awarded to the Buttercup Belles (the Parish Church’s flower arrangers) and Misterton Gardeners Club. Despite the snowfall the day before, 250 residents crowded onto Church Meadow to count down to the switch-on. Musical entertainment was provided by Hatfield Brass Band and Santa (courtesy of North Notts Lions) paid his customary visit. Sure Start put on activities for young children, while the Parish Council provided mulled wine and soft drinks. Refreshments were available as well as a range of stalls. Proceeds will go to the Parish Council’s nominated charities for the evening, Help Me, I’m Fine and the Parish Church. Help Me, I’m Fine is the charity set up by Helen Cousin following the death of her 16-year-old daughter, Maisie, in June. Peter Marsden, Chair of Misterton Parish Council, welcomed residents to the annual event, and afterwards thanked those who had supported the event: “Special thanks go to those who have worked throughout the year to put on our best-ever lights switch-on. It doesn’t just happen on the night – a year of planning went into it. Special thanks, too, to the Parish Church for hosting the Christmas Tree Festival. I would also like to thank those organisations that supported the Parish Council in any way, especially the stallholders and TXM plant, which helped put up the lights with a ‘cherry-picker’. This was the best-ever Christmas lights event, and so many people and organisations played a part in that success – making it a truly community event.”
Next year’s Christmas lights switch-on is on Friday 7 December – get the date in your new 2018 diary!
