July 10th is officially Rescue Day! This day could not occur without the tremendous . work carried out by the Rescue Day Committee and the generosity of the many helpers and sponsors along with our Host who have contributed and continue to assist in making Rescue Day one of the largest of its kind in both the UK and Europe. Our primary aim today is to bring together members of the Emergency Services from within our region and neighbouring regions / Counties along with other voluntary and Aid organisations in order to provide our communities with information and demonstration in the promotion of Safer Roads and Waterside Safety within our region and to the wider communities also. It is our intention to deliver this by way of Road Traffic Collision Demonstrations, Water Rescue Demonstrations along with educational trailers and stands from the Emergency Services and Aid organisations. Our chosen charity for this year‘s event is Help for Heroes and it is hoped that along with the generosity of sponsors we can raise as much money as possible for such a worthy cause. Finally, I hope as many local people can come to the event and make it a very successful day.

Some members of the steering group of the West Butterwick Village Plan met with 20 members of the Alkborough Residents Group on the evening of 1st June to discuss the outcomes of the completed Village Plan in Alkborough. The general feeling is that theirs is a very successful and comprehensive document which reflects the views of the residents of Alkborough. The steering group hopes to gain from their advice, and is very grateful for their help. At the meeting on Wednesday 2nd June the West Butterwick Village Plan steering group elected Mr. Gary Allen as Chairman and Mr. Barry McCloud as vice-chair. Currently there are 10 members of the steering group but all members of the village community will have the opportunity to be involved in creating a document which reflects the views of parishioners and their vision for the future of West Butterwick. The launching of the Plan giving every member of the village their first opportunity to be involved in the consultation process will be held on the evening of Friday 9th July 6pm -10pm at the village hall. Invitations will be delivered to every household with free refreshments and raffle prizes on offer. Look out for posters advertising the Launch Party and make a note in your diary. Every resident of the village, young and old will be welcome

Blackmoor Road / Lowcroft Ave / Marlborough Ave – Haxey anti-social behaviour, neighbourhood issues, nuisance scooters – Reports of antisocial behaviour by youths in this area including scooters being driver in an erratic manner. Any persons found committing any offences will be dealt with and where relevant, there is the opportunity to police staff to seize scooters at a cost to the owner. Neighbourhood staff will continue to patrol the area and would encourage anyone with any information to contact us. West Butterwick Village Hall - anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance, nuisance scooters – issues have been raised that the Hall is suffering from anti-social behaviour and damage some of which is graffiti. Due to the location of this hall does make it quite an attractive area for groups of youths to gather whilst not using the facilities provided by the hall and when the hall is closed. There are also reports of scooters causing a nuisance, which if police staff see then there is a possibility that the scooter could be seized and can only be recovered at a financial cost to the owner. Patrols will be checking the area and would encourage people to be extra vigilant in particularly with the lighter evenings which do make it more attractive for youths to gather. Officers continue to work with the local authority and youths to support diversionary activities for youths to prevent them offending. This includes support of the playing field associations in fundraising activities. Neighbourhood officers when duty times permit will actively engage with Neighbourhood watch meetings. PC 1839 Starbuck has organised dates with local schools within the ward to present the Lifestyle Project to the pupils, which is aimed to encourage the children to participate and possibly win some great prizes, anyone wishing to take part should take a look at the website, www.humberside.police.uk/ lifestyle or contact 01482 220700. Farming on the Isle at Harvester Farm , Epworth This has been a month of ―ups‖ and ―downs‖ as is the nature of livestock farming – nothing can predict what will be thrown at you – just have to do the best that you can and hope you make the right decisions. Firstly shearing was highlighted on the calendar to start at the beginning of the month with the hogs(last years lambs) and the rams to be done first followed by the rest of the ewes .Dean, our trusty Shearer, arrived early, with hope the weather would hold ( cloudy with a strong wind) got into a good start with Bill and Ben (the rams).Both behaved reasonably well and considering their size managed to sit still throughout the process – although Ben did give Dean a steely stare while he was shearing Bill – Dean‘s behind looked very tempting for a good butt! It was at this point the weather began to prove a problem – strong windy conditions are not good for wrapping fleeces as we (myself and daughter) discovered. The rams fleeces are not only thick but they also have a large surface area and after much flapping about we managed to roll them up and put them into the large special sack provided by the Wool Board. All fleeces have to be checked that no debris is on them before they are rolled up in a special way and placed in the sacks. These sacks once filled, approx. 25 fleeces, are laced up, labelled and delivered to the Wool Depot in Stamford. Deans next task was to shear a small group of ewes but after the second ewe he decided that the fleeces were not ready – the wool was ―sticky‖ and didn‘t come away from their skin and therefore would not come off as a fleece but in bits. It was decided to leave them for another 2-3 weeks. We then moved onto hogs who potentially were going to be a little skitty – first time to be sheared – but they behaved very well and looked very smart in their neat, trimmed and extremely white coats. During shearing we managed to have a good inspection of their condition and as we suspected – due to the rams getting into their field during the bad weather- 4girls were expecting. These have now given birth, sadly 1 was dead born but the rest are growing rapidly One of the main pests in sheep at this time is the blow-fly and due to the warm and wet conditions these insects thrive on the fleeces as a breeding ground for their larvae. They hatch, as maggots and feed off the skin under the fleece where it is warm and free from any predators, if left this can be very distressing for the sheep. So until they are shorn we have to be very vigilant checking 2 to 3 times a day. The lambs are all making amazing progress - -some nearly as big as their mums. Great games are played out in the field with as many as 30 lambs gathering into a group and running ―stampede fashion‖ across the field, leaping and jumping knocking over anything that is in their wake! All the cows and calves were moved out at the beginning of the month with just the bull to move across to his paddock at Misterton. He was very much looking forward to getting some sunrays on his back, but unfortunately this has had to be postponed for a number of weeks. This has been due to 4 of the claves born at Christmas going down with an unknown viral infection. Two of the calves have made a full recovery and went back out to the field 10 days ago, the third calf unfortunately did not make it and sadly died, at the beginning of last week. The forth calf is still battling through the infection and is receiving plenty of TLC. Best Wishes Jill Carr

18th Haxey Scouts enjoy their annual weekend at Woodall Spa. Each year the group are invited by top American motor cycles, Harley-Davidson. Over 260 bikes from all over the UK, as well as 28 bikes from Holland attend the event. For all their help on the gate, £620 was donated! A big thanks to all those parents who helped. Members of Owston Ferry Women's Institute were very pleased to welcome guests to celebrate the 70 years since the first meeting of the Owston Ferry Women's Institute was held. The guests were past members and members of Haxey Women's Institute as well as members of other Women's Institute groups in the Humberside area. 65 ladies enjoyed an evening's entertainment which included poetry from Eileen Pearson and Jean Marshall. The theme was that of wartime, and Miss Marina Mae sang songs from that era and the ladies enjoyed joining in the singing. A supper was served which had been prepared by the members of Owston Ferry Women's Institute.

On Thursday the 27th May year 6 from Westwoodside went to Lincoln Cathedral, along with other schools from around Lincolnshire. We went there by bus and it took over 1 hour! On the way, we went past the Red Arrows’ base and it just happened that they were practising with all the colourful smoke coming out the back- red, blue and white. As we arrived at the Cathedral we saw many other schools like Haxey arriving at the same time as us. After the bus parked we all grabbed our lunches and coats and walked inside the gargantuan Cathedral. Amazingly, it was a lot bigger than most of us expected. But as we walked through the door, it was full of light and colours from the stained glass windows. When the introduction finished we were split into 2 different groups. Half of the class went for a tour of the Cathedral while the rest of us went to do some brass rubbings. There were many rubbings to choose from like a unicorn and a lion and even an elephant and a soldier! We had a choice from many different colours to choose from including: gold; silver; copper; and even purple! Brass rubbing is where you get a piece of paper, put it on top of a piece of brass, get a coloured wax crayon and rub it over the piece of paper to copy the pattern on to the paper. After the first group had had their guided tour and the second group their brass rubbing session, the two groups swapped over. When both groups had had their brass rubbing session and their guided tour, we went for lunch. Then we had the service. We sang songs and all of the different schools showed us what they had been doing during the morning, for example: ribbon dancing, music making, glass window making, drama, bell ringing and much more. Then, we had a chance to go into the shop! Many people bought big pink rubbers saying, ‘for very big mistakes’ whilst others bought bouncy balls in all shapes and colours and chocolate bars in many different flavours. As we piled out of the Cathedral, we all got a Cathedral money box (which was really fun to make) and a family ticket to come again. Plus a Cathedral book mark and climbed on the coach. On the way back we were all exhausted and weren’t as talkative as we were on the way there. All in all, we think everyone enjoyed the trip and would go again! By Tierney, Imogen and Charlotte

On Friday 14th May, 14 cyclists and 2 back up crew from the Isle of Axholme, left the comfort of their homes and embarked on the 4 hour journey to Workington to start the famous Coast to Coast cycling challenge. Every year isle personal trainer Paul Seaman takes a team of between 12 and 20 clients on the coast to coast as part of the yearly events calendar he organises for clients. All clients have to prepare for the challenge as its 140 miles of cycling across some of the most demanding terrain in the British Isles and certainly not for the faint hearted. Saturday morning arrived, sunny with a gentle breeze and after a good nights sleep everyone was ready to begin the 45 mile trek from Workington to Greystoke. Passing through Keswick and taking in the magnificent sights of the Lake District the team of 14 split up as 7 slightly mad cyclists took the off road route up the Old Coach Road and the other 7 took the more sensible route along the road. The F.A. cup final seemed to spur us on to finish the first day in record time. We were all in the pub by 3pm, a great days cycling with some tough hills behind us, however nothing compared to what day 2 had in store for us! Sunday morning, the sun was shining again, we had picked the right weekend to for this challenge for sure. The shortest distance of the whole 3 days, just 38 miles of sheer torture, meaning tackling the hardest hills the lake district had to offer, if i said Hartside and Garragill, those that have done the C2C will be cringing now just thinking about them. Another good days cycling, finishing at 3pm again, this team is by far the fittest i have taken on the C2C, the're making it look too easy, must be the training they put in before hand now paying dividends for them. Monday morning, last day and the farthest distance to cover, 60 miles to the finish, initially a hilly start but the last 30 miles was downhill, what a relief. This day was never ending, it seemed to drag on and on, however at 4pm, we all reached our destination, Tynemouth. With a celebratory drink or two, we rested up in the Port Hole Pub and waited for our transport back to the Isle of Axholme, the 2010 C2C completed! Well done to all the team members this year, the training paid off and you all did yourselves proud. See you all next year for Whitehaven to Sunderland!

Haxey Parish Council & Axholme Camera Club Photographic Competition 2010 The winners of this year‘s Photographic Competition 2010 received their awards and prizes which were presented by Mr Roger Gilliat prior to the May Parish Council Meeting. Burial Ground There is only sufficient area of land available in the church yard for burials to last for the next few years. The Parish Council are responsible for providing any new burial land and have considered a number of options in the past. It was agreed some time ago with the Parochial Church Council that the existing area could be extended eastwards by moving the wooden fence. Additional land has now been offered, for the Council to purchase, in Church Lane, and this is being actively pursued. Planning Approval is now being applied for and if successful, then hopefully the purchase will be completed shortly. Power of Well Being Haxey Parish Council is to undertake a course to qualify as an eligible Parish Council, entitled to exercise the Power of Well Being. In order for a Parish Council to qualify as being eligible the order requires that a Council must have the following:A qualified Clerk (who holds a Certificate in Local Council Administration (CiLCa) awarded by the Monitoring and Verification Board and who is trained in the use of the well-being power. a minimum of two-thirds of vacancies on the council filled at the last ordinary elections 80% of councillors trained in the use of the well-being power published statement of community engagement The Councillors of Haxey Parish Council wish to exercise the Power of Well Being so are participating in the training programme. The Power of Well Being allows principal local authorities including Parish Councils to do anything they consider likely to promote the economic, social and environmental well-being of their area

On Saturday 12th June Haxey Parish gardens were open to the public. From a meadow, to hanging baskets, vegetable and fruit plots, small and large , traditional and oriental, the choice was yours! First stop was tea and cake at the Church Hall, fantastic job ladies! The afternoon definitely gives you inspiration for your own garden, so make sure you make the effort next year. Wroot Travis Primary School News letter At the end of May we had a visit from Paul Money a very exciting Astronomer. He told stories and explained things to the children in a fascinating and funny way that brought astronomy to life and taught the children so much. It was a really good day and Mr Money received a huge round of applause. This term the children have taken part in the first ever Wider Opportunities music exam. The KS2 children have been learning to play the clarinet thanks to the Wider Opportunities scheme. It is hoped they all do well, they certainly sounded very good. On June 13th some of our children, with their parents and dogs, took part in Wroot‘s first ever Run 4 Life. This is Wroot‘s alternative to the Race For Life but still raises money for Cancer Research Uk. The weather was very kind and we had a really nice morning. Don‘t know how much we raised for the charity so watch this space. Nursery and Reception children having fun with bubbles.

THE DRAINAGE OF THE ISLE OF AXHOLME The years between 1626 and 1719 were a time of trouble and violence in the Isle of Axholme. In 1626 Cornelius Vermuyden was granted the opportunity to drain Hatfield Levels (or Chase) that was the Kings land. At the time King Charles1 was short of money and Parliament refused to give him any except under certain conditions. He granted Vermuyden permission to drain Hatfield Chase. To be successful the surrounding lowland also had to be drained; thus the western part of the Isle of Axholme was included. The King, Vermuyden and the local tenants were each to receive one third of the drained land. At the time before the drainage the Isle was surrounded by water with the River Trent to the East, River Dun (Don) to the north, the River Torne to the west with the River Idle to both south and west. The rivers meandered fairly freely constantly changing their beds. In winter much of the land was flooded. Quite large boats could sail between Wroot, Haxey Carr and the River Trent. The low lying watery area were full of fish and fowl including Herons, Bitterns, Storks, Cranes, Swans, Ducks, Geese, Curlews, Snipes, Redshanks, Plover, Waterhen, and Teal that were of obvious importance to the locals. Between Hatfield and Westwoodside there was about three feet of water all year round flooding about 60.000 acres. In summer some of the less flooded land dried sufficiently to be used as common pastureland. Their use was protected by the Deed of 1359 by John de Mowbray. Peat was cut for local use and some for sale in York that was said to depend on Axholme peat, as London did on Newcastle coal. Some attempts at artificial drainage had been made before Vermuyden. In the reign of Edward 111, commissioners were set up to build a channel to relieve the waters of the Idle and maintain it. Bykersdike was dug from the Isle to Stockwith to do this. Later in the reign of Henry V, commissioners cut Mare Dyke and made a sluice to try to control the waters of the Dun and short cut the waters to the Trent at Luddington. Snow Sewer and Hekdyke were also pre-Vermuyden attempts at Drainage. Vermuyden agreed to drain the area in 1626. Of the drained land the local people were to receive one third, the King one third, and Vermuyden and his shareholders called Participants were to receive one third. The work was started in 1627 and finished in 1629. About 50 Dutch workmen and Dutch equipment was used. They set up their camp at Santoft. Vermuyden’s task was to drain Hatfield Chase that was Crown land and the overflowing lands surrounding it including the western part of the Isle of Axholme. The meandering Idle River in the south was cut off at Idle Stop and the waters directed down Bykersdyke to the River Trent at Stockwith. The Dun River’s northwest branch was cut near Snaith and a five and a half mile drain called Dutch River was cut to Goole for this water. The River Torne was restricted into the new Torne river channel from near Wroot to come out to the Trent at Althorpe. Due north from Idle Stop was cut the new Idle Drain crossing the River Torne at Tunnel Pits as far as Dirtness. Here it ran parallel to a similar drain from Tudworth due west. They ran side by side to the Trent at Althorpe. High embankments were built on the right hand bank of the River Dun and on the north bank of Bykersdyke. The work was done in two years and cost £400,000 – a vast sum in those days.

WESTWOODSIDE Church of England SCHOOL Newsletter The School is very grateful for the marvellous sandpit which was recently donated to our Foundation Stage Unit by a generous family. The sandpit will further encourage learning outdoors and will, inparticular, help develop children’s large motor movements. Both boys and girls have enjoyed bringing in their wellies, which they all manage to put on and take off by themselves! This independence means that the sandpit is one of the many free choice activities available in the Foundation Stage Unit. The sandpit has been especially useful recently during the children’s ‘seaside’ theme and as part of their ‘Seaside Day’ on 24 June.

THE TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION – SCHOOL NEWS Learning has been very enjoyable and ‗lively‘ over the last few weeks, as both schools have held ‗Multi-Cultural‘ theme days linked to the World Cup. Food has been a main feature with children receiving demonstrations on preparing and cooking everything from German soup to Balti Curry! Of course, the really fun part was being able to taste all of these wonderful flavours and textures! Action Aid provided a startling insight in to the life of children in parts of Africa such as Ethiopia and the children were introduced to its ‗One Goal Education Campaign‘ – ‗Send My Friend to School‘. This was a very interesting presentation as it required the children to think about school from a different cultural perspective. Research in to the different countries that are competing in the 2010 World Cup definitely broadened the knowledge and skills of all of our pupils as well as building up the excitement in advance of the Tournament itself. Let‘s hope that England do well! On Tuesday 8th June, Lincoln Cathedral was the venue for the annual Church Schools‘ Festival. This event provides an opportunity for a number of the older children from the 143 Church Schools in the Lincoln Diocese to join together for an inspirational day of events and activities. Children attending the festival had the chance to try their hand at carving, hand-bells, modern dance, brass rubbing, orienteering, bell-ringing and sign language. In addition to all of this, this year the sculptor of the famous Forest Stations in the nave of the cathedral led a treasure trail through his work, and the Lincolnshire Beekeepers' Association demonstrated the art of candle rolling to the children. The children also learned more about Lincoln Cathedral as part of a guided tour themed around the topic of journeys. The visit ended with an act of worship, led by the children themselves using the skills they‘d learned during the day, including: Hand-bell ringing, dance and drama. Senior clergy from the Diocese of Lincoln spoke at the worship, and it ended with the Lord's Prayer in sign-language. Very memorable, to say the least. St Martin‘s has already held Sports Day this term. Well done to the following pupils who won trophies in their year:- Hannah Barker, Abigail Platt, Ben Carby, Sam Hattersley, Nathan Wilson, Adam Brown and Roshien Crowe. Kinnard‘ s Red Team were the overall winners, although we were all victorious in beating off the wet weather, managing to complete all races despite grey skies and cold rain at one point during the afternoon. West Butterwick School now looks forward to its Sports Day. In addition to all of this, both schools are looking forward to Brumby Engineering College visiting with their steel drumming band at the very end of June. We look forward to hearing some Attitude Theatre Arts For relaxing music that evokes tropical beaches and Dance Drama & Singing a palm tree-lined vista......! Flowers for Someone Special
Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice. Don and Betty Clayphan of Owston Ferry, have gone that extra mile. Don is Curator of the Smithy Museum and is a very enthusiastic Committee Member of the Owston Ferry Society (which runs the Museum). There is not much about the history of the Village and the Church that Don does not know and yet he is very unassuming. For years Betty and Don were very involved with Santa at the Smithy and it is only in the last two years that Betty has not been so active, but was always there to dress Santa and to run a stall to raise money. Don attends the Smithy every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday during the period from May to September to light the fire and to take visitors on guided tours. Don is also the Agent for the Frances Sandars Almshouses and he and Betty both show concern for some of the older residents in the Almshouses. He still manages to find time to keep a wonderful garden and to attend meetings and put himself out for the good of both the Society and the Almshouses .

Doncaster Advanced Motorist History of the Highway Code Dear readers, With 1st June marking the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the driving test in the UK. It needs drivers to continually improve their driving techniques in increasingly demanding driving conditions and keep their skill levels up to date. Our driving tests, however, have changed little over the years and an improvement in driving standards is needed to fill the gap. Although cars are becoming easier to drive – with much improved brakes and suspension as well as power-steering and a host of other safety systems. Traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex, so the driver needs far more understanding of what‘s going on outside the car. In the UK 71 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads. It is improving the driver what will make the single biggest improvement to road safety in the future, In 1935 the driving test was introduced: within a year the death toll had fallen by nearly a thousand thirds fewer deaths (2,538), but fourteen times as many vehicles (34 million) room for improvement. The 1931 edition: cost one old penny contained 18 pages of advice, com-pared to 133 pages in the 2007 edition. In 1935 edition included advice to drivers of horse drawn vehicles to ‗rotate the whip above the head; then incline the whip to the right or left to show the direction in which the turn is to be made. Since those early days, regular revisions of the Code have reflected changes in technology and developments in traffic management and road safety. Diagrams of road signs - just ten signs in all - were first seen in the second edition, as was a warning about the dangers of driving when affected by alcohol or fatigue. Stopping distances made their first appearance in the third edition, along with new sections giving hints on driving and cycling. The arrival of motorways in the £110 late 1950s led to the inclusion, in the fifth edition, of a new section on motorway driving, explaining such things as how to use exit slip roads and advising drivers to avoid drowsiness by stretching their legs at the parking or service areas. The 70-page 1978 edition introduced the Green Cross Code for pedestrians and the new orange badges for the disabled. Prompted by soaring car crime statistics, the amended version contained advice on vehicle security. The 1990s saw a new format taller booklet and the inclusion of a section geared to the new driving theory test,
which in the current edition has now become part of the Code itself.
