Editors Letter… At last the Summer months have arrived, full of long sunny days and warm evenings! Well we can but dream! Let’s hope its an improvement to the rainy months of July last year when many events had to be cancelled. Rescue Day is on Saturday 13th July at 7 Lakes Country Park . If you remember last year it had to be cancelled, all the hard work put into it for local charities as well! Let’s make it a bumper event this year and raise as much money for charity as we can! Let the sun shine! Don’t forget there is also the Smithy Museum at Owston Ferry open every Sunday and Bank Holidays until September. Travel back in time and support your local history! The deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 10th July. Keep your articles coming in and if anyone is interested in advertising please give me a call. Enjoy your read.

CELEBRATING BAPTISM AT ST NICHOLAS CHURCH HAXEY. Baptisms at St Nicholas are held as part of the Morning Service and on these occasions there is a larger congregation and often a few extras for the Sunday School. Too often we do not see the family of the baptized child in church until the next child arrives! It was decided to invite families who had had children baptized during the last year or two to a special Sunday afternoon get together. Invitations were made personally and a number of families were pleased to attend. Other church members

attended and helped in various ways. Having greeted our special families the children were soon busy cutting pasting and colouring at a craft table. Photographs of baptism celebrations were projected onto the screen and our organist played some cheerful background music while adults chatted. Nigel North our Church Warden asked everyone to assemble for the short service of Songs, Prayers and a short talk by the vicar, the Rev Jeremy Green. The Mothers’ Union main aim is to support family life and bringing children to church for baptism is part of Christian Family Life. The two regular M.U. publications Families First and Families Worldwide concentrate on supporting parents. A recent article about the importance of Dads in the spiritual development of the child advertised a small leaflet – What Dads Add- these were given to the fathers present at the service. Haxey is very hot on refreshments and these were enjoyed alongside more chat and children’s craft. It was really good to have our young families in church for this celebration. Elaine Dunford

News, News, News... £1,858 51 RAISED FOR CHRISTIAN AID We had our final Hunger Lunch raising funds for Christian Aid in 2013 during Christian Aid Week. £256.90 was raised which added to the £761.91 raised during Lent is £1,026.81. Very many thanks to the organizing team, the regular weekly workers and those on the rota for making these occasions happy get togethers. The soups have always been delicious thanks to Phil and Carol Arscott. We do appreciate having the professionals on the job. Our other effort to raise funds for Christian Aid was courtesy of ‘Take Note’. The choir gave an excellent concert at St Nicholas Church on Saturday May 18th. The choice of songs was varied and the singers and audience enjoyed every item, from the serious ‘Say a Little Prayer’ to the delightful ‘Do Re Mi’ sung by the Notelets. Conductor – Ruth Bruce is to be congratulated on the standard achieved by the Take Note choir, which was very ably accompanied by Nicole Lewin. Again the professionals were on the job. £831.70 was raised for Christian Aid .

On Saturday 25th May a Big Breakfast, Cake Stall and Car Wash took place at Wroot Village Hall . This event was part of the North Lincolnshire Festival Weekend, which was organised to showcase facilities funded by the Leader Project. We were pleased to welcome Shalon Perkins, coordinator of the Leader Project (photographed with the car washers). £272.10p was raised during the morning and the money will be put towards the continuing maintenance costs of the hall, a facility used regularly by the local community for a host of events and entertainment. The morning's event was very successful and greatly encouraged by the long awaited return of sunshine. The ladies in the kitchen (Terri' Brownbridge, Kate Wilson, Liz' Viles and Clare Hopkins) were kept very busy preparing snacks and beverages and of course the very popular Wroot Full English Breakfast. Cakes were also entered into competitions and judged by Betty Bayes. The overall adult winner was Julie Noble with Libby Goodwin winning the children's section. Outside, in the sunshine, Neil Sanderson and his three female assistants Lucy Hopkins and sisters Eleanor and Libby Goodwin were busy all morning washing cars. The people of Wroot are very appreciative of the of funding made available by the Leader project which has enabled major improvements and refurbishments to be made to the Village Hall - a facility we are rightly proud of and one which is used for many and various activities

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 13 by Anthony Catherall

Christopher Buttrick a schoolboy made a refreshing debut to the Imperial Hall stage on 22nd March 1961 playing William (Bill) Harvey in “Dear Octopus” a comedy drama written in 1938 by Dodie Smith. Conversely to the last production a huge cast of 17 players crammed the dressing room behind the stage. There were many new faces joining Christopher on the boards that month. (a month when the USSR had just put a dog into orbit, a prelude to the first man in space Yuri Gagarin three weeks later on April 12, the space age had begun), including, Barbara Bennett, Angela Robinson, Dorothy Johnson, Margaret Selby, Ann Bell (schoolgirl) and Barbara Bennett. The plot, ‘It is the weekend of Charles & Dora Randolph’s Golden Wedding, Four generations meet in the crowded house when the whole family is present. It is time for celebration when hopes and memories come back, a time to face old fears and anxieties a time for love…. Over the course of the weekend, the family members have to come to terms with their own inner quarrels, their jealousies and attitudes towards the family. It was certainly a box office winner: Bookings for the four-night presentation were well up on last year and apart from two back rows there was a full-house first night on the Wednesday. The play however had not been produced without travail-travail beyond the ordinary for amateur dramatic societies. One big handicap had been that the producer, Miss Gertrude Lees, had been ill during much of the rehearsal period, and even in the late stages of preparation had been able to supervise just once a week. On Miss Mary Housham, her deputy, therefore had fallen a great responsibility for what went right or wrong, according to good luck and good management, she was quite well satisfied. After the celebrations, at two-am on the Saturday night, the clocks went forward for British summertime.

Some of the cast members

Back row; Margaret Archer - Gordon Fletcher – Ann Bell – M. Clifford Trimingham – Barbara Bennett. Front row; Freda Matthews – Christopher Buttrick – Ella Dempster – Dora Armitage.

In the Bible, life is described as being a bit like participating in a race. Derek Redmond, a young British athlete in the 1992 Olympics, had dreamed all his life of winning a gold medal in the 400 metre race. His dream was becoming a possibility when he succeeded in getting into the semifinal. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his leg and he fell to the track with a torn muscle.

Darren

0782 3338 237 01427 753412

Derek struggled to his feet. He started to hop toward the finish line on one foot in an attempt to finish the race. Suddenly, a large man came out of the stands and ran to Derek's side. It was Derek's father, who then helped him to finish the race. At first, the crowd watched in silence. Then they rose to their feet, cheering and clapping. Of course, Derek Redmond finished well and truly in last place, but he walked away with the incredible memory of a loving father who, when he saw his son in pain, left his seat in the stands to help him finish the race. We may struggle with difficulties at times in our lives, but we can have a heavenly Father who loves us and will help us. And we have Jesus who came to earth to show us how best to run the race of life.

Westwoodside Church of England School Buddies One of the strengths of our school is older children helping the younger ones. For example, there is a rota for our Year 6 School Councillors to be ‘Buddies’ by helping the younger children, in Foundation Stage and Years 1 and 2, during playtimes. In the photo, pupils from Mrs Harris’ class are taking part in ‘Buddy’ training by completing activities with Year 2 pupils in the hall. There are many examples of older children helping the learning of younger pupils in different ways.

Kwik Cricket Sometimes our older children benefit from the support of pupils from South Axholme Academy. On 21 May, we sent a ‘Kwik Cricket’ team of Years 5 and 6 children to South Axholme for a coaching session where some the Academy’s Sports Ambassadors supported our players. Our team went on to a tournament at Brumby Hall Sports Ground in Scunthorpe on 06 June and almost made it into the final!

Gardening As part of their learning about ‘Growth’ in Science, all the children in year 2 are growing a plant in the School’s greenhouse. To develop Literacy and Maths, the children are keeping a diary of their plant’s progress.

Passport Days It has become an established tradition that two days per term are allocated to Passport Days. At this time, the normal timetable is suspended and the children, in a pair of classes, learn about a different part of the United Kingdom or a foreign country – hence ‘Passport Days’. The emphasis is on active learning and valuing diversity in people and places. Often pairs of classes will collaborate in their learning. Recently, Year 1 and 2 learnt about life in London.

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) SCHOOL NEWS Following on from our last School News, I am pleased to report that our planting troughs are now in situ at West Butterwick School and we are growing our first crop of sugarsnap peas! Following this, the children have already expressed a wish to add strawberries and purple carrots to the seasonal planting plan as it moves through a full cycle over the next 12 months or so. Mrs Marshall, a local resident has kindly donated some leeks and so we should have a good variety all in all! Staying on the theme of food, the Foundation Stage pupils (Nursery and Reception) of both schools have held medieval banquets recently. As an extension to their learning linked to castles and castle life, our youngest pupils had the chance to come to school dressed in costume (Knights and Princesses were popular themes) to participate in jousting, medieval dancing and period games of the time. It was very enjoyable. No horses were injured in the jousting as we used inflatables! A medieval banquet is to now lead on to fish and chips, as our Key Stage 1 children (Years 1 and 2) will enjoy an educational visit to the seaside towards the end of June, linked to their geography work. Our ‘Infant Geographers’ have been comparing and contrasting regional seaside/coastal towns such as Cleethorpes, Skegness and Mablethorpe. In terms of gaining an awareness of the wider world, a regional comparison led to developing their global knowledge looking at coastal features of such far-flung places as Bondi Beach, New South Wales in Australia. The children are now looking forward to exploring some of these coastal features first-hand although not on Bondi Beach, but at Cleethorpes! Key Stage 2 pupils at West Butterwick visited Idle Valley near Retford, a few weeks ago, to carry out some pond dipping and really enjoyed learning about the variety of wildlife and how the habitat of a pond supports their existence. Junior pupils at both schools have continued to extend their knowledge of the Vikings and learned more about the Viking way of life, through a visit from Helga, a Viking Time Traveller who happened to call in to St Martin’s Owston Ferry! She told them all about Viking raids, longhouses, food, clothes and religious and cultural beliefs. The children were fascinated and asked lots of insightful questions. The special Viking Week at St Martin’s ended in an authentic Viking meal of rye bread, vegetable stew and rice pudding, which the children had a hand in making. Bringing ‘School News’ back to the present day now, we had a ‘football’ focus in both schools for our School Councils as the West Butterwick Juniors Football Club Chairperson (Noreen Smith) and Treasurer (Alan Jones) generously donated £245 to each school in our Federation and told them all about the history of the club, that now sadly no longer runs. This money was raised by the Club over the time it started, approximately sixteen years ago. The two football kits that remain are being sent to Uganda for the benefit of children who play football in East Africa. The School Council at St Martin’s welcomed a Dog Warden in to school on Friday 7th June to talk to the pupils about being a responsible dog owner. Presentation of Football Club cheque from Noreen Smith. Paul McCurragh did an impressive job in answering all of the children’s questions and will be visiting West Butterwick School next to give his talk. Competition entries for ‘Scoop the Poop’ were judge by Paul and Cllr Jan Williams during the visit to St Martin’s. First prize went to Brooke McKenna with three runners up :- Travis May, Sarah Sellars and Jackson Swales. Congratulations to these children. Thanks also to Cllr Jan Williams for donating the prizes. We are now looking ahead to everything that June and July brings to the school year.... Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. I am sure we all remember the intense rain we experienced last June, so let’s hope that the weather is kind to us this year, for Sports Afternoon in particular! Axholme Camera Club News Letter Tuesday 28th May 2013 the Camera Club held its Annual General meeting in the Church Hall Haxey. The attendance was good and the business was concluded reasonable quickly. The chairman gave a special thank you to Ken Thompson who after many years has decided to stand down from his position on the committee. Following this the committee was then re-elected with the chairman expressing his thanks to all its members for the hard work through the year. The chairman also emphasised that many of our Judges and Speakers through the year had openly made reference to the friendliness and the enjoyable atmosphere of the club. There was then time for questions from the members, after which the AGM was closed. There was then a print knockout competition organised by our Treasurer with each member entering four images of any subject, size or colour. Four images were displayed at a time and the members then voted by a show of hands, the one with most votes went on to the next round. This went on till there was only four images let standing. The overall winner was Simon Knight with a great monochrome images of his pet dog. Well done to all who entered and congratulation to Simon. The following week the members took the opportunity to bring their camera to have a roam around the outside of the Church. Unfortunately we could not get access to the inside on this occasion however this did not stop most members from enjoying the evening sunshine in the church grounds. Following this short photo shoot the members Storm over Balmoral Castle were treated to a Cream Tea with Scones and Pavlova including strawberries etc. During the Cream Teas we presented the trophy's to the winning members, these are the Emlyn Perrit Trophy and Several Money Gifts Certificates supplied by our sponsors “Tom Dennis of Scunthorpe, these are awarded for the highest points scored for competitions through the year. It was a clean sweep with Jean Goodburn taking the prize money and Trophy, the runner up was George Fiddler followed by David Livsey. Well done and congratulation to Jean. The committee will be meeting over the next few weeks to ensure we have a interesting programme for next season. Flower of creation

Co-op Support First Responders as ‘Community Champions’ MISTERTON based Five Villages First Responder group have been chosen by Lincolnshire Co-op as the beneficiaries of their ‘Community Champion’ scheme this summer. ‘Community Champions’ is Lincolnshire Co-op’s way of sharing profits with the community. Every time a member shops at Misterton Co-op and uses their dividend card between 2nd June and 7th September, a donation from the company will go to the voluntary First Responder team. Nominated Champions change every 3 months so hundreds of charities throughout the area can benefit. The group are asking everyone to remember to use their dividend card when they shop at the store to help them raise as much money as possible. Anyone who has not got a dividend card can apply for one and forms are available in store. The Community First Responders (CFR) give their time to be on call and are dispatched by the ambulance service following a 999 call involving a medical emergency in the local area. Because the CFR is nearby in the community, they can proceed straight to the scene and begin to give care to the patient until the arrival of the ambulance. The scheme is run on a voluntary basis and funded by local donations and fund raising events. Therefore the support of the Co-op will help to boost the funds of this vital local organisation, helping to ensure it is able to continue it’s good work. If you are interested in finding out more information about the Five Villages First Responder team, then please get in touch via e-mail contact@fvfr.co.uk, visit the website for more details www.fvfr.co.uk or telephone 07909 001226 and leave a message.

Dear readers, Park on the left-hand side of the road if possible – make it always if it’s at night. In a car park you should reverse into parking spaces. This will make it safer when you’re driving out and more fuel-efficient as you’ll be manoeuvring with a warm engine. Also, it’s easier to steer into a small space backwards rather than forwards – steering effectively with the rear wheels is better for manoeuvring. If reversing into a space, try to start by manoeuvring the car so that the space is straight behind you the less turning you have to do backwards, the easier most people find it to judge. Some buildings have signs saying to park nose in, because of where air intakes are for the ventilation and where car exhaust pipes will be when parked backwards – look for the signs so you don’t gas the occupants! Car sides are often not straight, so watch other things than just the car next to you when lining up in a space. A higher seating position inside the car makes it easier to manage knowing where the corners are when in a tight space. Use your mirrors as well as looking over your shoulder to check how close to things you are, and how straight your vehicle is. And there’s no shame in peering out of an open window to get a better look. At the supermarket, try and park away from trolley parks and corners to avoid your car being damaged. Think about which bit of the car you need access to when you get back to it – so if you have heavy items to lift into the boot, park so it is easily accessible. When reversing in a space, the rear wheels are the point where a car “pivots”, so watching where they are relative to the corner of a wall/other car is really useful. Once they are past the corner, the way you steer relative to it to avoid the corner changes. Parking is now a staple part of the L-test, and it can be quite surprising to see how often people struggle with it, and see the task as particularly stressful. It’s important that you take your time and don’t succumb to pressure by other drivers around you when you are parking – it’s far better to do it right than to do it quickly. Practice is the real key – if you do it often you should be able to do it well. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information by contacting.
