13 year old freestyle skier Strikes Gold After a 9 month lay-off due to a knee injury, 13 year old, Haydyn Fiori from Doncaster has become the youngest male to ever make it on to the overall podium at the resent British Slopestyle Championships held in Tignes France. Slopestyle skiing is where athletes ski down a slope with various types of obstacles including rails, boxes and jumps and are scored for difficulty of line down the course, execution of tricks, and fluidity. You are judged over 2 runs and the top 12 moving to a 2 run final.
Haydyn, laid his marker down for the British Slopestyle Championship, by becoming the only under 17 year old to make the final 8 in the British Rail Jam competition, which he finished 4th. This set him up with the confidence to push himself in his preferred ski discipline of Slopestyle. After Haydyns two runs he had done enough to make the 12 man overall final in 1st place (at only 13yrs). Not letting the nerves or expectations get to him, Haydyn skied the final with a head well above his years, putting down a solid 1st final run and then stepping it up in his last run, which he managed to include a switch 900 on the 2nd jump (hitting the 18mt jump backwards then spinning 2 ½ rotations before landing). At the podium ceremony, Haydyn was crowned the kids champion taking gold, and then surprisingly he was then awarded silver in the overall category at the age of 13. His coach James Webb who was supporting him at the top of the course said this afterward’ s ‘Haydyn absolutely smashed it in the slopestyle event at the British Championships. He was up against riders twice his age (and his height!). After coaching him JOHN AND LEE FULLWOOD all week I knew he would do well in his age group (which was the largest of all the age groups) but it wasn't until PLUMBING AND competition day I realised just how well he could do HEATING ENGINEERS overall. Standing at the top with him for his 2nd run I knew he could podium and I think I was more nervous than he was! I am so proud of him for staying cool and All Plumbing work undertaken laying down such an awesome run under pressure. What a hero.’ Haydyn is supported and sponsored by the major equipment manufacture Salomon and the indoor snow slope Snozone based in Xscape Castleford, for which he would like to thank them both for their support and encouragement. He would also like to thank BDV Recovery Scunthorpe for its financial contribution, which is greatly needed and appreciated as this is an unfunded sport. A few quotes below: Haydyn; ‘ I’ll take 2nd place overall any day, but I know who I need to beat and what I need to do, and I am willing to go further than anybody else to reach my goal of one day competing in the Olympics’.

The British and Olympic Freeski Coach Pat Sharples; ‘Haydyn is a big part of the future of British Freestlye skiing, and it’s just amazing to see that all his hard work Reg no 209284 and dedication towards his sport is paying off. He is officially the youngest male athlete to make the overall podium in the British Slopestyle Championships, which says 14 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements a lot about him, as we have so many talented skiers coming through the ranks’.

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION - WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Following on from our last School News, which referred to the cycling proficiency and growing our own vegetables, I am pleased to report that the children are continuing to be enthusiastic about their learning in connection with ‘fitness and healthy living’. Recently, the school received some exciting new athletics equipment. We have been using this to learn about and develop different throwing techniques as well as working on ‘beating our own personal best’ linked to ‘distance thrown’. The children have particularly enjoyed using the javelins and working on their ‘shot put’ technique. We have also been engaging in a number of skipping workshops (Skip2theBeat), learning that skipping is one of the best exercises we can do as it gives us the chance to practise and refine the ‘fundamentals’ of many sports – balance, timing and footwork. Healthy Living relates to consideration of a healthy diet too. The infants have had the chance, linked to their history studies, to find our about foods that were popular in the past. They even had the chance to sample them ; spam, faggots, corned beef, haslet, tongue, liver and black pudding. This led to an interesting discussion with regard to ‘We Are What We Eat’! Mrs Josephine Buckle Headteacher, Trentside Federation of St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools.

Crowle Show has received a welcome boost for its forthcoming annual event in the form of a substantial grant from the ‘SSE Keadby Wind Farm Community Fund’. Show secretary John Shaw says: “The Show Committee are extremely grateful for SSE’s generosity. “This grant will allow us to purchase additional storage facilities and extra equipment for use in the show which will reduce our hiring costs and help sustain the show for future years.” This year’s event marking 117 years of Crowle Shows will be held on Sunday 20th July at the Show Field, Godnow Road, Crowle and promises to be a great day out for all. One of the Main Ring attractions will be ‘Flyin Ryan’ labelled as Britain’s No. 1 Motorcycle Stunt Team. “You may have seen stunt riders before but if you haven’t seen the Flying Ryan display prepare to be amazed. Their spectacular stunts are sure to thrill the crowds,” says John Shaw. More details are available on their website: www.flyinryan.co.uk The action-packed programme also includes a Polo demonstration whilst several bouts of ‘All-In Wrestling’ promise to add to the excitement. John Shaw reveals: “In addition we have a Tugof-War competition plus Brick Lifting contest so if you feel energetic why not enter? “There’s the popular comprehensive Horse Showing and Horse Jumping events, Cattle and Sheep showing, Classic and Vintage vehicles and a large Dog Show with more than 150 varieties of dogs on display. “A Funfair and Donkey Rides for the kids all add up to making it a great day out for all the family with something for everyone.” Main Ring events start at 9.30am with Flyin Ryan’s first show at 12noon. A free mini bus service will take visitors to and from the Show ground. The bus will pick up outside Nicholson’s Garage on Eastoft Road, the Marketplace, top of Godnow Road and the New Trent pub at Ealand. “So make it a date in your diary to support your local Crowle Show, Sunday 20th July,” adds Mr Shaw.

In July members of the Epworth and District Flower Club will host an open evening at which Andrew Grisewood, a NAFAS National Demonstrator, will entertain with a demonstration entitled “Panache”.
It will be held on July 22nd from 6.15pm for a 7pm prompt start. Proceeds will be for the NSPCC and tickets are £10 which will include refreshments. The June meeting began with a welcome from Carolyn Drury, the club’s Programme Secretary, to Sue Maddocks from the Halifax area who demonstrated on the theme of Summertime. Sue intrigued the ladies from the beginning by creating two large screens from behind which she produced her interesting “containers” and they also hid from view her assistant, also named Sue. The first arrangement was suitable for a welcome , perhaps to a summer wedding. Sue used an open urn into which she inserted hosta, ferns and euonymous to provide a base before inserting ten Calla lilies of a colour called “Ventura”. These created a striking effect of height in the centre of the arrangement and then Sue continued by adding beautiful cream roses. She gave the group tips about conditioning lilies and use of roses as she talked and finally she added Singapore orchids around the base of a stunning arrangement. The second arrangement was to suggest a barbeque. The container had tall twigs on three sides and again Sue gave tips on the mechanics of such an arrangement. She amused us as she placed wooden barbeque tools, fennel, large hosta leaves, fatsia and four fantastic heliconia into the base. More Calla lilies, this time a pinky shade and two dark red anthurium were carefully placed before Sue produced carefully toning panscrubs on sticks to bring the arrangement back down to earth! A second, similar arrangement then appeared from behind the screen and was received with much approval. A Japanese evening was the title of the next piece. Sue used a metal screen into which was inserted quite a large gnarled contorted hazel branch. An exotic effect was achieved with dresina leaves which Sue split, rolled and fastened, before inserting “Madame Pompadour” orchids, “Ocean song” vintage roses and more stunning anthurium which this time were of a different shape and a very dark purple shade. The group could have been transported to Japan! Sue’s fourth arrangement was to signify Le Tour de France and Sue amused the Group telling them how she had become the owner of a bicycle wheel! She used this as the basis for another beautiful display. This time she used, euonymous and tropical leaves for her foliage before adding very pretty green carnations and “Good times” yellow vintage roses. Sue’s final arrangement of the evening was created using a recycled hanging basket. She had woven a variety of twigs through the frame and proceeded to use palm, ferns and other foliage before inserting the flowers. This time Sue used two deep purple hydrangea, large chrysanthemums, more vintage roses and finally pistachio anthurium. Another altogether splendid and imaginative arrangement. Anne Everett gave the vote of thanks to Sue and her assistant and commented that Sue Maddocks had inspired a visitor for the evening to consider joining the club. What more could a demonstrator do?

Dear Readers, How we train our new drivers was under scrutiny last month – because the Government is still rightly concerned about the number of young driver deaths on our roads. What can a parent do when the time comes for their teenager to take to the road and learn to drive? The short answer is “pay for it” – as there is no substitute for proper professional tuition. But the hands-on parent who wants to help their youngster with practice at the wheel can help make the process less daunting, and perhaps reduce the need for quite so many lessons, before the dreaded L-test. Drivers who practice with supervision in addition to their lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) are more rounded at the end of the process and increase the chances of first time test success. But driving lessons are not getting any cheaper (if only because of the rising cost of petrol the instructor needs). If you want to help your youngster learn to drive, you need to go back to driving school yourself. Be prepared to sit in the back when your youngster has their first driving lessons – but say nothing. Just take it all in. That way you can see and hear for yourself what the professional instructor is advising, and make sure that you reinforce those messages when you are helping on practice drives with your youngster. You have to also realise that your driving style may be an effective one for you as an experienced driver, but not necessarily a direct fit with the syllabus that the ADI will be working to preparing your youngster for the test. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) also publishes the curriculum on their website – another very useful resource for parents. Please remember too that not every family car is suitable for practicing in, of course: a larger vehicle that has an automatic transmission is of limited use if you know that your youngster will eventually do their test in a manual Micra, for example.
