Owston Ferry WI News It has been a busy time for this small, but very active WI. Two ladies attended Denman College in Oxfordshire and enjoyed their weekend, one painting like an Egyption and the other making silk scarfs. Then one lady attended the Centenary Garden Party with other WI ladies from around England and Wales at Buckingham Palace, which was hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall and two days later another Owston Ferry WI lady attended the Centenary AGM of the WI at the Royal Albert Hall which was attended by 5000 WI ladies. The Queen, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex also attended for a while. There was wonderful media coverage of the events, which were thoroughly enjoyed. There will be no meeting in July as the members will be on their annual outing, this year being to Renishaw Hall. The friends of Owston Ferry WI will be holding a coffee morning on Thursday 30th July at 10am in the Coronation Hall. Do come along and support this important fund raising event.

PUPILS GRADAUTE AFTER DARE PROGRAMME Year 6 pupils of Misterton Primary School graduated at the end of their DARE programme last week (Monday 2 June). Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is an international substance abuse prevention education programme that aims to prevent drug and alcohol misuse, bullying, and peer pressure. Haxey Primary News
On Monday 8th June Year 4 went on a trip to the Hands on History Museum in Hull, as part of their topic work on Ancient Egypt. They were able to use their knowledge to be artefact detectives, learn to write hieroglyphics and make paper from papyrus. The highlight of the trip was a visit to the mummy room where we all met a 5,000 year old priest who had been mummified all those years ago. And there were some wonderful replicas of the beautiful treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamen. Best of all we mummified Alfie with a little help from his friends.

Free Citizens Advice Debt Service Available
North East Doncaster Citizens Advice have seen a huge increase in the number of people seeking help with debt issues.
During the first 3 months of the year we handled almost £1.7 million of debt with almost 500 people turning to us for help with debts during that period. The rising cost of energy, food and housing is putting extra pressure on people's finances, with no end to the problem in sight. Karen Bothamley, Chief Officer, North East Doncaster CAB, said: “Some budgets are at breaking point - people who have never experienced money worries before are finding their finances increasingly tight as rises in day to day spending like keeping their home warm, getting to work and putting food on the table is sending them over the edge. “Payday loans, credit cards and overdrafts are being used to top up people's income as wages are static. There are things people can do to get on top of their finances, including making sure they're getting all of the help available, aren't paying over the odds for things like gas and electricity and prioritising their spending to make sure there is money for essentials like rent, energy bills and water. It is important people don't wait for debts to mount before they seek help. A few early actions could stave off a future financial meltdown. “If we can help, please contact us on 01302 846745 or 01405 741457. We won’t judge, and our service is free and completely confidential.” North East Doncaster CAB is a registered charity number 1096497 providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice on any subject to all, without discrimination for any reason. THE W.W.2 DIARY OF CLIFFORD SPENCER 1764164 Gunner. SPENCER Clifford 27 L.A.A. (Light Ack Ack) Regt, R.A. (Royal Artillery) (107 Bty. (Battery)) Adapted & edited for publication by Anthony E. Catherall
One poor chap was laid in the middle of the road dead. He was an MP (Military Police) Sergeant. One of the Jerry’s gave me two bars of chocolate, they gave us water. How different they were to what we had been taught. I’ll speak of him as I found, he was a man. Most of them looked very young; we were put into a square where we came across most of our battery. Of course questions were asked among us all, wanting to know if anyone had been wounded. The result was marvellous, out of all our battery, only two were killed, and about two I think wounded. About two hours later we were marched off up to the hospital and spent the night in the yard. Some got blankets. In the distance, the petrol dump was sending clouds of smoke up, shells and bombs were still dropping in parts that had not yet been taken. I went to sleep that night, thanking God for bringing us through that terrible day safely and praying for my wife and Julie at home. We slept on a concrete floor but I had a good night’s sleep, we were packed like sheep. Morning came with the sky still black with smoke; Jerry planes over to see all was well. I was wishing I could send word home telling Mary I was OK and safe, I had a few biscuits for breakfast. 9 am, we were lined up and set off, to where we did not know. As we went down the road Jerry had already got his gun in place. With supplies still coming in, a lot of them stopped to take photos of us, but acting in a manly way. Of course some of these were odd young ones, and they were taking rings and watches off the chaps, it was all up hill and the sun hot, but at least we were given a rest; most drank what water they had left, and most casting away kit. Threw my blouse away, just simply couldn’t carry it any further. I wanted to stick to my topcoat. I knew what cool nights we got; well, we go on and on. And was hoping we were nearly at our destination. Rommel passed going into Tobruk. The sun by now was boiling down on us, some had sore feet, some had cast everything but the shorts they had on, on the roadside went kit-bags, haversacks, tin hats, everything you could mention. Erwin Rommel directs Italian armoured formation
At last we came to our destination, where we met thousands of more prisoners, what a sight it was. Night came for which we were thankful. Three days we spent there, there were many fights for water, sometimes we got a barrel of water, but only got a bottle full each and it had to last all day? In those three days we had very little food.

BURGLARS SECRETS FOR ACCESSING YOUR HOME Adapted for the Arrow Magazine By Anthony Catherall
1.Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, doing odd jobs, or delivering your new refrigerator. 2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the toilet when I was working in your garden last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers still in the letterbox. And I might leave a flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.. 5. If it snows while you're away for a time, get a neighbour to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway. 6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy. 7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink, also the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewellery. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too. 8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather. 9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.) 10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet. 11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms. 12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.
22
13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're away, you can buy a cheap device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at www.faketv.com )
Please mention “The Arrow when responding to advertisements
MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WILL NOT TELL YOU: 1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook. 2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbours. 3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbour hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature. 4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it? 5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighbourhood at night, before you close the curtains or blinds, just to pick my targets. 6. Avoid announcing your holiday on your Face book page. It's easier than you think to look up your address. 7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation. 8. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in. 9. Net Curtains tell me that generally old people live in the house. 10. Unlocked garden sheds are often a ready source of tools for me to break into a house. 11. I love high fences and hedges at the front of the house because no one can see me from the road. 12. I don’t like high fences or hedges at the back of a house because I have trouble getting over them. 13 Movement operated lights positioned high-up I’m wary of, because they will light up when it’s dark and expose me. 14. People who have signs visible from their windows that say ‘This house is protected by SMARTWATER’ make me think move to another house that hasn’t got Smartwater. I even have this deterrent system in my house it’s that good. 10. And lastly never deal with anyone who drives around your area in an unmarked commercial vehicle and knocks on your door offering services-

THE TRENTSIDE FEDERATION - WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS We are now in to the latter part of the Summer Term and the weeks are flying by. Pupils continue to put lots of effort in to their homework projects as well as working hard at school! Year 1 and 2 children were given the challenge of designing and creating their own gardens – the projects created by Jack Robinson and Phoebe Whittingham were particularly impressive! An educational visit to Normanby Hall on 8th June extended the Infant pupils’ work in this area, allowing them to investigate insect and animal habitats, with activities such as pond-dipping. Pond dipping activity at Normanby The Infants at West Butterwick (Reception and Years 1&2) are to take part in their own dramatic performance of ‘The Garden’, in July - we are already looking forward to that. Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a visit to Lincoln Cathedral for the ‘Church Schools Festival’. This event brought hundreds of children together from the Diocese of Lincoln and provided them with an opportunity to engage in bell-ringing (hand chimes), origami and hat-making, as well as having a tour of the Cathedral and taking part in a collective worship. Crops are growing in our ‘raised beds’ now, at St Martin’s. We harvested garlic and onions recently. Beans are being grown too with the idea of these supporting some maths work linked to growth rates, creating bar charts etc.
Declan in Year 1 (St Martin's) holding up his 'Prize Onion', grown at school!
Pupils in Year 6 at St Martin’s teamed up with Haxey Year 6 on Friday 5th June for a visit to Rock City in Hull. Rock city boasts one of the largest indoor climbing centres in the UK. This activity provided a wider perspective to the pupils’ PE curriculum. They all really enjoyed it. Key Stage Two pupils also attended the Tata Steel Triathlon in June. This took place at The Pods – they ran, cycled and swam! All children crossed the finishing line with a good time and had great fun participating in this competitive event.

Jack with his wonderful 'Garden Homework Project'
Infants at West Butterwick and St Martin’s are going to the theatre on Friday 12th June to experience ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. This best-selling children’s book is being ‘brought to life’ on stage for the very first time and should certainly inspire our budding poets, illustrators, song-writers, actors and authors – ‘Aliens love underpants, of every shape and size, but there are no underpants in space, so here's a big surprise!’. Children at both schools continue to enjoy accessing a range of musical experiences; the most recent development being the introduction of the ukulele. Junior pupils at both schools are to learn this instrument. Did you know that the ukulele first came to light when Madeiran immigrants brought it to Hawaii in the 19th century? By the 1920s, millions were sold across America and most households owned one! Tiny Tim made it famous with his 1968 hit ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’, but its roots are in rock ’n’ roll too. Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and David Byrne play the ukulele! “Jimi Hendrix played a ukulele, before his guitar! Some readers will certainly know that George Formby played the ukulele! ‘Google’ is a wonderful thing! It certainly is an interesting and versatile instrument. We are looking forward to seeing how this tuition develops. Congratulations to Romey Alcock and Joe Layton for recently achieving ‘pass with distinction’ in Grade 1 B Flat Cornet and Grade 1 Trumpet (respectively). To find out more about what the pupils across both schools have been involved in lately, please visit www.trentsidefederation.co.uk Phoebe (St Martin's) with her 'Garden Project' homework

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School The school hall was packed to the rafters last month as it once again hosted Haxey's got talent. The audience were treated to a spectacular array of acts, including dancing, singing, instrumentals, comedy amongst others. Each and every act gave their unique performance. It was clear an awful lot of effort and preparation was put into each performance. It was topped off by a performance from local group 'The Quirky Birds'. Congratulations to all that took part, and thanks to all back stage staff and to Mrs Murray and Mrs Shah who compered the evening. You can see from the photo's how much everyone enjoyed the performances. Year 6 recently went away on a residential field trip to 'Kingswood', over in the nearby Dearne Valley. For some, it was their first visit away from home so was a significant trip. Activities included aeroball, archery, bushcraft, sustainable living and problem solving activities. It is one of the most environmentally sustainable centres available, with its own on site water treatment system and is home to one of Europes largest solar panels All in all everyone enjoyed their time away. Year 6 also enjoyed a trip to Rock City over in Hull, as a reward for their hard work towards the SAT's. Rock City is the home of climbing, skateboarding and BMX and was an ideal opportunity for the class to let off some steam! The PTFA hosted their usual Summer Fayre after enjoying the school's sports day on 23rd June, and are please to announce funds raised over the year are in excess of £3000. This would not have been been possible without your support, so masses of thanks to everyone who has contributed, helped, attended or taken part in PTFA events throughout the year. It really does make a difference to our school. The PTFA also held the annual 'leavers disco' where those ending their final year at the school were treated to pizza and a film. We wish all our year 6 pupils luck and success as they continue their educational journey in their new schools. Bags 2 School has been a roaring success throughout the year, raising around £200 for school. Look out for dates over the next school year. This is an ideal opportunity to have good clear out of unwanted clothes that are sold for recycling, with funds coming back directly into school. Looking back over the school year, governors would like to thank staff, pupils and parents for their continued support. The governing body have seen enormous changes, with our reconstitution placing the right governors in the right role, along with several staff changes. We say goodbye, thank you and good luck to Mrs Brown who leaves for pastures new, and welcome Mrs Sara Kelly who joins us in September as deputy head, and also year 1 teacher. Many thanks too, to Mrs Jo Buckle from Trentside Federation who has been filling in as head for the last few weeks to cover sickness. We also welcome teachers Miss Holly Vaughan and Mrs Le'Anne Coley to the KS2 team this September. This last year has seen the children participate in all sorts of fun activities. Below is a list which just about mentions everything the children enjoy... Themed dinners, World Book Day activities, school trips including residential trips, guest speakers (Florence Nightingale, Meet a Creature), visits from the emergency services, services at St Nicholas's Church, triangular sports, swimming gala, fundraising events, sports day, summer and winter fayres, Christmas Concerts, class Christmas parties, book fayres, new outdoor learning area, school disco's, pantomime, Easter bingo, Haxey's got talent, and cake raffles. We must also mention the provision of the new play equipment on the school field (jointly funded by school and the PTFA) and the purchase of the latest form of technology, 'tablets' for pupil to use in school. Thanks go out from school to the PTFA, without whom a number of the above activities just would not take place. If you think you can help out the PTFA at all, please contact them (details on the school's website). Dates of future meetings will be distributed in September. If you have any idea, perhaps an after school club you can run, please do get in touch. We love to hear and 38 newPlease mention “The Arrow” consider ideas that supplement our pupils learning when journey.responding to advertisements Wishing all our pupils and staff a lovely summer break. Road Hazards Dear readers, A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts, hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather. Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger. To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety ‘ingredient’ sufficient time to react. To minimise your chances of being affected by other people’s mistakes or adverse driving conditions you must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving. What is Commentary Driving: Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you’ll often find there is so much going on that you can’t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can’t keep up verbally. This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive. Commentaries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your actions. Driving Plans: The three simple questions. What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you. What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road What might reasonably be expected to happen? Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead, eg: Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead. Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the next bend. Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or combine harvester round the next bend. Don’t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop back a little and keep a lookout for the next stop, as it provides advanced warning of an opportunity to pass. Prioritise hazards in order of importance. Deal with each one accordingly. With these potential hazards in mind drive within the limits of what you can see, never assume anything and plan for danger to emerge from obscured areas. Safe Driving Paul Tuke. This very cute boy is Max, a four year old Jack Russell who is needing a new home. Max is a lovely, friendly, happy boy who is very well behaved in the house, and loves to play and go for walks. He is not good with small children, so would need a home with much older kids. He is ok with most other dogs, but not cats. Max is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you would like to meet Max, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705
