Welcome to the July issue of the Arrow!

We are now coming towards the end of the academic year, exams have finished and we await for the results in August. Hopefully all our children achieve the results they have worked for and all have places to go to in September. I will be awaiting nervously for my daughters results, but whatever the outcome I know she has tried her hardest and that is all I asked for. September brings college and driving lessons, another stepping stone into adult life! The big event of the Isle, RESCUE DAY will be held on 8th July at 7 Lakes Country Park. A fantastic day for the whole family. Lets hope the sun shines! Last year the event was cancelled due to the weather. Such a shame with all the hard work put into such a big event. The deadline for the August issue is Tuesday 11th July for distribution by the 1st August. If you are interested in advertising please be in touch before the date.

HAXEY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE On the evening of 7th June, Haxey WI enjoyed a talk by a colourful and characterful lady, June Barton, which was entitled ‘Privvies, Pigsties and Old Coppers’. Her talk gave us an insight into June’s interest in discovering and recording these particular aspects of domestic life from the fairly recent past before all those ‘outside lavvies’ disappear completely! Members had lots of laughs, both about the subject-matter, and also June’s adventures in gaining access to them. June is known as ‘The Queen of the Saltmarshes’, has contributed to both radio and television programmes in Lincolnshire and is available to give a variety of talks. Our summer trip to Southwell Workhouse and the Minster will be on Wednesday 19th July. The trip is open to all, whether WI members or not, and there are still places available on the coach. As the Workhouse is a National Trust property, of course NT members will be able to enter for free. If you are interested, please contact Judith on 07539252613 for more information. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday July 5th at 7.30pm when our Speaker will be Ron Ansley on the ‘History of Money’. All visitors welcome.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Our early summer activities are now complete with regular members and new interested local people coming along to see the splendid display of rare green winged orchids in Haxey. Several people got up extremely early to listen to the dawn chorus and learn about the variety of bird song from our local Lincs Wildlife Trust warden, Matt Cox. The early morning was worth it! There was also a visit to Oakhill reserve near Goole, where Matt led us around a reserve none of us had visited before. Saturday September 16th 8am till 11am Moth morning We have a late summer meeting at Geoff and Chris Trinder's house in Belton where people can come along and see the moths which have been attracted to lights during Friday night. We often think that moths are just little brown things but surprisingly there is a great variety of sizes and colours. The elephant hawk moth for example is quite large and is pink and apple green. Not only will there be moths to see and photograph if you wish, but there will be bacon buttys and drinks provided all for £3. The event is open to anyone and we hope you will join us at The Croft, 32 Carrhouse Road, Belton, DN9 1PG. Our indoor meetings begin again on October 5th with a talk on hedgehogs by Frank and Veronica Tett who run a hedgehog rescue centre. All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Don’t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Chris Trinder's house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. Details about the group are also on the Lincolnshire Trust web site under area groups. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

Latest news from the Old Rectory, Epworth We are now into the 4th month of this season and as busy as ever. We had a very successful event with our Country Fayre. It was well attended by community groups discussing and demonstrating their individual interest areas. The younger members of the community really enjoyed the contacts they were able to make with all the animals on display, and for the first time ever, our refreshments team ran out of cake. We still have lots of things happening in the future including our play about Susanna Wesley, titled "Susanna Wesley, This was your life," A spin on the old TV programme "This is your life." It is a combined church effort and is to be held in St Andrew's Church on the evening of July 23rd. This isn't going to be out only foray into the dramatic arts as there is a production of Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" on the main lawn in August. Get your tickets early and plan your picnic tea - there will be lots of space in the garden to picnic prior to the performance so you can arrive in plenty of time for opening speeches. Lots of groups have booked in this year with three of them being choirs so we can look forward to a very musical summer. Our musical summer was kick started by Epworth Music Day which is always well attended and we had a full day's programme for that. Full information of all our events can be found on our Website and Facebook pages. Gillian Crawley, our manager, Kate, another of our volunteers, and I went along to the recently formed Isle branch of U3A to give a talk on what it's like behind the scenes of the museum, which was well received. There is nearly as much going on behind the scenes as there is in the public eye as many of the volunteers have more than one role which they fulfil. If we didn't enjoy it, of course, we wouldn't do it, although at times it can be very frustrating. One of our main frustrations is the fact that we still need volunteers willing to fill the spaces in the team. If you think you can fill one of those spaces and have three or four hours to spare on just one day each week, do come and talk to us, we're a friendly bunch and love to make new friends. No need to worry about skills as training for any role is provided on site. Come in to see Gillian, or give her a call on 01427 872268. You'll be made welcome.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary school - part of the Trentside Federation There are lots and lots of things going on at school as we hurtle towards the end of the school year. Jungle Jump Our year 2 class represented our school at the Baths Hall in Scunthorpe at the musical extravaganza that was 'Jungle Jump'. A total of 250 year 2 pupils from across the authority came together to sing their hearts out as part of a mass performance. Well done year 2! A very special visitor Centurion Gaius Flavius recently visited our year 3 class. He spoke to them about entering the army and going into battle. They even had the opportunity to try on some armour similar to that worn long, long ago, and also attempted to blow on a horn. This 'hands on' learning gave the children a huge insight into this topic. Easter bonnet & Decorated Easter Egg Competition School was overwhelmed with entries from children across the school just before the Easter break. The children certainly employed their creativity to challenge our judges into picking a winner and runner up for each category, which was a very difficult task! Our bonnet winners/runners up were... FS2 Matilda Marr/Noah Evans Y1/2 Willaim Perrin/Tia Hodgins Y3/4 Maisy Mottram/Lilly Stewart Y5/6 Scarlett Kirwan/ James Robson Our decorated egg winners/runners up were... FS2 Macey Davenport/Matilda Lidgard Y1/2 Jasmine Jones/Charlie Dobson Y3/4 Elliot Coles/Emma Leigh Varley Griffin Y5/6 Ruby Lewin/Abi Coggan We would like to thank the children who took part, and congratulate them all on their efforts. Police Visit The school received a visit from the new South Isle PCSO Linda Dye recently. She visited each class's to discuss the important topic of Strager Danger, which we encourage parents to do too. The delivery was specific to each class. The children really engaged with Linda and took on board what she had said. We enjoy visits from our local policing team and would like to thank Linda for her invaluable input into our children's safety. Linda says she is looking forward to visiting year 6 to talk about the Lifestyle Challenge.

Sponsored walk All children took part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for PHASE charity, who work closely with communities in Nepal, particularly in those that were effected by the earthquake. Our school, along with others in the federation, took part in a sponsored walk to support the charity. FS2-Y2 children walked 3 miles, with children from Y3 onwards walking in excess of 5! We were also so lucky with the weather, and a visit from Rev. Green who joined children for a prayer along their journey. The children were superb, and raised an awful lot of money for the charity. Well done everyone! Summer Fayre The PTFA are busy organising the school fayre and welcome the community on Thursday 29th June at 3.15. There will a be lots of stalls, games, crafts, refreshments and a raffle will be held with some amazing prizes! All funds raised are for the benefit of the children on their education journey. FS2 Visit to Coneygarth Farm Our children from FS2 recently visited Coneygarth Farm. We donned our high visibility jackets and walked the short journey down the road. Martin the farmer and Claire gave us a very warm welcome, and at first took us to see the cow and baby calves, the youngest was just a few weeks old! Martin explained that the cows were looking forward to going into the field, but when he opened the gate, they were a little reluctant. The cows are quite sad that the usual lush green grass they like to eat is rather dry as there's been much rain of late. The Bulls, Vulcan and Umpire were next door, and were very inquisitive of the children who had come to see them. Next stop were the chickens. They had a luxurious chicken run and house, with a special next area for laying eggs. Lucky for us an egg had just been laid! The children walked round to the next pen which contained 3 sheep and 2 baby lambs. Martin and Mrs Hather picked up the lambs who were very cute and liked calling out for their mums. The children enjoyed letting the lambs, who were soon reunited with their mothers. Martin had left out 2 of his tractors for the children to look at, and even sit on! A queue soon formed with each child taking it in turns to climb up to the tractor, which was a Merlot. Coneygarth let us look, around their new outdoor leaning classroom, which had its own resident...a tortoise! He had his own living space and heat lamp to keep him nice and warm. All of the animals provoked questions and discussion from the children, who will take this visit back to their classroom as part of their curriculum. We are so lucky to have such welcoming neighbour's who allowed us to visit their workplace. The weather was also in our favour as it was a bright and sunny day. Thank you to Martin, Claire and all of the animals we saw.!

This lovely boy is Roman, a 7 year old Tabby.

Roman is a friendly, affectionate cat who is very playful and mischievous, but really likes his own space and will hide when he’s had enough of humans!. He is fine with other cats, but would be better in a quieter, experienced home with no young children. Roman is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped, and is just one of the cats in our Rescue looking for their new homes.
