Free family arts festival is a Super success Families from across the borough flocked to The Point on 25th May for its annual #PointFEST inclusive arts festival. The free festival, which had a superhero theme this year, hosted almost 500 family members and included two sell-out family raves, a fancy-dress competition and live music. Families put The Avengers to shame with their spectacular superhero costumes, as the likes of Cactus Man and The Flaming Carrot made their appearances. Meanwhile, families were treated to a wide range of interactive activities throughout the day, from Superhero Selfie Booths to free face painting. Live music acts, including Doncaster Ukulele Group, took to The Point’s comic book exhibition space, ‘Scribble, Doodle & Draw’, for a grand finale of hits which all the family could enjoy. #PointFEST was well received by families, with some calling it an "Amazing family inclusive event”, “The best day ever!” and “Absolutely fantastic afternoon! Brilliant atmosphere!” #PointFEST organiser, Hayley Beecher, said “The event was a real success – we were thrilled to see so many families in the building getting stuck into creative activities and having fun. “The biggest joy for me was seeing the children and young people we work with in Doncaster’s five special schools coming to The Point with their families, many of them for the first time.” This year’s event was also sponsored by Keepmoat Homes, which helped it to be bigger and better than last year. The Point has full disabled access (lifts available to all levels in the building) including disabled toilets and a Changing Place Facility. Staff have Makaton Friend and Dementia Friend training, and the building is Breastfeeding Friendly and has baby changing facilities. There is an FAQ guide for families on The Point’s website (www.thepoint.org.uk) which provides insight into what parents/carers can expect from a visit.

What next for the Old Rectory?

Another successful event over and the Rectory returned to normality, but for how long? The flower festival with the Botanical Engineers is really finished with the last bit of greenery and flowers now removed from the house, but it was great while it lasted. All the visitors were surprised, impressed and wowed by the art installations that had been created and which put a completely new slant on the story of the Wesleys here in Epworth. The links between the installations and the story were thought provoking, and even people who thought they has seen it all were suitably impressed. The Craft Fair was up to it's usual high standard with a good mix of hand crafted goods on sale, and the music provided over the weekend by a number of local musicians was very good with lots of variety to please all musical tastes, and even got a few people dancing to it. Clarty Sough amused with self penned folk songs, The Iron Town Foot Tappers lived up to their name, even setting a few feet tapping with an impromptu performance in the Refectory to the delight of the visitors enjoying tea and cake. The Brown Spearing Duo featuring Rebecca on Sax entertained us on both days, as did Terry Stables, Andrew Taylor and our compere Goff Fordham. John, Ian and Richard, members of Ep'th Folk club, and Out on a L.I.M. also played their part in entertaining the visitors and stallholders - all playing manfully through the rain on both days. But now it's time to prepare for our next extravaganza - Chapterhouse Theatre Company from Lincoln performing Pride and Prejudice on the formal lawn on Sunday the 14th of July. The cast of eight will bring the story of the Bennett girls and their trials and tribulations which so closely mirror parts of the Wesley girls stories, although I do have to say Mrs Bennett is nothing like Susanna Wesley, who was highly intelligent and strong minded as opposed to Mrs Bennett's flighty, vacuous behaviour as a parent. It will be interesting to see a new rendering of the relationships within the play. I do have one slight disappointment to announce though, Colin Firth will not be playing Mr Darcy - sorry ladies!! Tickets are available on line or at the Rectory, and please do remember to come early and bring the picnic to enjoy prior to the performance. Any queries to 01427 874422, and always remember - there are multiple volunteering opportunities at the rectory, so do give us a call to discuss these. Cath Fordham

Misterton Community News Misterton’s annual Gala is on Saturday 6 July from 12 noon to 5.00pm and will be held on the Old School Field. There is space for registered disabled drivers at the front of the Library—but, with the event back in the village this year, visitors are asked to walk or cycle to it. There is parking, however, in the car park at the front of the Methodist Church Misterton’s fire appliance will be there, along with a vintage vehicle display, dozens of stalls, beer tent, and plenty of refreshments. Entry is again £3 for adults (accompanied children go free). Stalls are £5 per pitch. To book a pitch, e-mail mistertongala@gmail.com or call (01427) 891629. Space is limited, so stalls are first come, first served. There’s a new attraction this year - chainsaw carving – so plenty for all the family. Pictured is a vintage vehicle at last year’s Gala.

CLOSE RUN THING FOR MISTERTON BOWLERS! Misterton Bowls Club was in action again this month, playing Owston Ferry in the Gainsborough League. They lost the away leg by one point, but won the home leg by two points, making an overall win of 63-62. So, the local team goes through to the second round, which is against Scotter. Good luck to our local bowlers! Anyone interested in joining the Bowls Club, please contact Malcolm Moody on 890340.

Saturday 1 June and closes at midnight on Wednesday 31 July. With the theme this year of the Chesterfield Canal and Bassetlaw’s industrial heritage, there are three categories: ● story of up to 6000 words for ages 15+ ● poem of up to 40 lines for ages 15+ ● story on the theme of inventions for children aged between 7 and 14 years. Misterton Library is well-equipped with picture books and toys for children. But new or nearlynew toys are always wanted to help provide a welcoming and stimulating environment for toddlers. Anyone with suitable toys should bring them along to the Library during opening hours – please clean them first! The finalists will be invited to the very first North Notts Literary Festival, where extracts will be performed, and the winners announced. Further details are on the North Notts Literary Festival website (www.nnlf.org.uk) or e-mail competition@nnlf.org.uk. The Literary Festival runs from Friday 13 to Sunday 14 September. Included is local crime author, Stephen Booth, sharing his experience and signing copies of his new book.

MISTERTON LIBRARY NEEDS VOLUNTERS Misterton Library has gone from strength to strength since taken over by the Parish Council. It has opened for an additional afternoon each week, all classes at Misterton Primary School have visited, and there have been activities for children. Now, the Library is looking for more volunteers to run and expand services. No experience is needed – just a willingness to have a go. Full training is given and Inspire, the County’s Library service, has a help line for on-thespot advice. Volunteers are needed for the Library’s opening hours, which are:

The North Notts Writing Competition (formerly Short Story Competition) opened to entries on

This gorgeous puss is Charlie, a 10 year old boy who has sadly come back to the Rescue as his owner is very ill. Charlie is a very affectionate cat who loves human company. He is used to a home where he is the only pet and with no young children, and where his human(s) are at home most or all of the time. He would be perfect for an older person wanting some feline company.
