Welcome to the July issue of Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow What a fabulous Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, full of celebrations and joy! I enjoyed a couple of days in London but after attempting to set foot on The Mall with no joy, I abandoned the celebration and headed off to Paddington, a much quieter place on the day. I must admit it was much easier to see the celebrations sat on your sofa from home! The whole weekend was full of music, colour and adventure and the Queen meeting Paddington Bear, in a sketch which opened the BBC's Party at the Palace was the icing on the cake. Tapping to the beat with her spoon on her tea cup, the Queen introduced 'Queen' the famous rock band along with singer Adam Lambert who performed the song We Will Rock You. For me this topped her skit with James Bond to open the 2012 Olympics in London! I hope you all had a fabulous long weekend and I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who sent me photos of their celebrations! Any local news or events please keep in touch for the next issue of the Arrow. Enjoy the read. The deadline for the August issue is Thursday 14th July for delivery by the 1st of the month.

Following two fairly quiet years due to the pandemic Epworth Bowls Club has now seen an influx of new members. There are teams regularly competing in four local leagues together with popular Sunday roll ups and regular social events. The Club has now received some much appreciated sponsorship from local firm Dale Murten Wealth Management of Fountain Court, Epworth, and the teams look very smart in their new shirts which carry the company logo. Anyone interested in trying out bowling as an activity is welcome at the Club's Battle Green home on a Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Bowls will be available to use but flat soled shoes will be needed on the green. Please contact Roger on 07779525105 or Liz on 07503066055.

Do your best! That’s the Wolf Cub Motto that Cubs apply in their everyday life. Through organised activities, Baden Powell Cubs, meeting in Westwoodside hall, will learn and enjoy a wide variety of new experiences. From being out and about exploring the local area, to having their first experience of camping without parents, Cubs will develop their social and practical skills. All year long, through a carefully crafted programme, leaders make sure that Cubs are kept busy, active, safe, happy, and having bags of fun in their new adventures! This boosts their confidence, develops their team spirit and team leading capabilities. We incorporate lots of outdoor activities including den building, geocaching, stargazing, archery, etc… Learning through games is a key part of our sessions, as well as traditional scouting activities and working towards a long list of badges. Modern day Wolf Cubs includes girls & boys as part of an integrated approach. The Wolf Cubs are encouraged through the training programme to become better citizens, work together in team activities, explore their environment & help each other to succeed. Come and have fun with the Wolf Cubs at Westwoodside Hall! Our latest adventure was a sleepover at West Butterwick village hall in May. For some of our cubs, this was a first ever camp out, but for all of us we'd not been away for more than 2 years so it was very exciting! When we arrived on Friday night, we worked in teams to put up our tents and arrange our sleeping areas. We slept in small groups, competing to have the tidiest tents! We played games and did some dressing up cubs as Egyptian mummies, and then had some supper. Then for the main event - the "Entertainer" badge. We had an amazing show of talent, from comedy acts, musical numbers, poetry reciting and some circus skills. Surprisingly, we had worn the cubs out and they settled to sleep, without TOO MUCH fuss! Well, eventually! In the morning, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast before judging the tidy tents, and then "striking camp". All the cubs had to help work as a team to find all their own belongings, pack their own bags, tidy their own sleeping bags, and put away all the tents. Our next adventure will be our 3-day joint scout and cub camp in July. This will be a much bigger event, staying near Sheffield in the peak District and a brilliant opportunity for our scouts to be great role models for the younger cubs. As we have some cubs nearly ready to move up, there will be spaces available in the autumn should any local 8-10year olds want to join us. We meet on a Monday night 6-7:30pm. Contact Matthieu for more details at: matthieu_maloigne@mentor.com Currently we are operating a waiting list for Beavers, but are looking for a Leader to take on this younger group. If you are interested in helping, contact Gregor on: ggibb79@aol.com

PLATINUM JUBILEE EVENTS: A TRIBUTE TO THE QUEEN IN MISTERTON! Four days of events matched those the Queen was due to attend, starting with lighting the beacon on Jubilee Garden. The beacon was specially made for the occasion with the basket constructed by local farrier, Jed Hallam, from disused horseshoes. The bugle call was played by Fiona Law, the Parish Church's organist, on the clarinet, in a duo with Parish Councillor Ian Keat. The beacon lighting was followed by the Jubilee Choir singing Song for the Commonwealth - with the hundreds of residents around the junction of High Street, Wharf Road, and Station Street joining in the National Anthem to conclude the evening's event. The beacon lighting was followed by a Civic Service of thanksgiving for the 70 years of the Queen’s service on Friday 3 June, a race night on Saturday 4 June, and a Family Picnic on Sunday 5 June. The Platinum Pudding competition was won by Claire Taylor. Many thanks to the Parish Council’s Events Working Group for organising the tribute to the Queen, and to those residents and local businesses that supported the programme of activities.
MISTERTON GALA – BACK AFTER ENFORCED BREAK Misterton Gala is back on Saturday 2 July on the Old School Field (off Wharf Road). The event begins at 12 noon and features Bedazzled Musical Theatre Co, Everett-Fox School of Dance, live music, Dozy Dave the children’s entertainer, and vintage vehicles. Plus many stalls and food and drink. Entry is free! For a stall, e-mail mistertongala@gmail.com or ring 891629.

MEN IN SHEDS
Are you interested in setting up or joining a shed in the Isle of Axholme? The Community Network on the Isle of Axholme has identified a range of issues in the community which they are hoping to tackle on behalf of residents. Isolation and loneliness are two of the issues identified. Men in Sheds is one possible way of tackling these issues. To explore if there is community interest on the Isle, in this initiative, we are holding a drop-in session on the 6 July 22 at the Crowle Community Hub (library), Market Place, Crowle, DN17 4LA 10am to 12 noon, & a presentation event at the Haxey Memorial Hall, High Street, Haxey, DN9 2HN on the 11 July 22 at 10am to 12 noon. If you would like to find out more about Men in Sheds, please come along to these informal events or contact us prior to the event .
About Men’s Sheds
An Act of Murde
Crowle Entertainers are staging their first production since January 2020. It is called “An Act of Murder” and it promises to be a great night out! A struggling theatre company are performing a murder mystery play when matters take a strange turn and a real murder takes place in their midst. Come along and see if you can solve the murder and guess who dunnit in our comedy murder mystery performance. The performance will take place at the Crowle Community Hall on Saturday 9th July at 7.30pm. Tickets priced £5 are available from Crowle Regen Shop, Crowle Tesco or by calling 07966 315733 or on the door. Cabaret style seating – bring your own refreshments. Director Gillian Vickers said “It has been far too long since our group has been able to perform in front of an audience – both our January 21 and January 22 pantomimes were unable to go ahead due to Covid. We kept the group going online by producing a radio play and two films which were all put together remotely online during lockdown, but there is nothing like performing in front of a live audience, so we are hoping that local people will come out and support our group and have a fun night out into the bargain.”
Men’s sheds are community spaces for men and women to connect, converse and create. The activities are often like those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they are fun! The idea behind the Men’s Sheds movement is that men are more likely to thrive in informal spaces, in the company of their peers and through engaging in practical activities such as sharing, plus learning skills and helping the community. At a Shed, you can take part in practical group activities such as woodworking and gardening, sharing, and learning new skills and supporting other "shedders" by working with them shoulder to shoulder. With the funding support from the National Lottery, Humber & Wolds Rural Action (HWRA) can provide set up support to help the community establish a Men’s Shed on the Isle. To find out more about setting up or joining a Men in Sheds in your area or for further information contact Carole Johnson Email: carole.johnson@hwrcc.org.uk Tel: 01652 637700 https://www.meninshedshumber.co.uk/ HWRA is funded by the Lottery Community Fund to facilitate the development of Men’s Sheds in Northern Lincolnshire.

Isle Choral Singers Summer Concert By the time you are reading this isle choral singers will have appeared at the Epworth Music Day under the management of the new musical director. Since the resignation of Robert Fields, the previous music director, the accompanist, a talented musician, Maurice Davis has been acting music director as well. However, there is now a newly appointed music director in the person of Robert Steadman, whom we have to offer congratulations on his recent marriage, thus allowing Maurice to revert to his role as accompanist, which he fulfils admirably. After the Spring concert which was well attended and received, the choir immediately began rehearsing for the summer concert, which has a different flavour, being lighter and less formal with songs from shows and films, such as Les Miserables and Sound of Music. There will also be a guest appearance by organist Nicholas Haines, who is a talented musician and who has previously arranged music that the choir has performed. The concert will be held in St Nicholas Church in Haxey, at 7pm on Saturday 9th July with entry being £7 per adult payable at the door. Students are £4 each and accompanied children (under 16) will be admitted free of charge. There will also be a rafffle and light refreshments on the day. The choir still needs more new members, although we have 2 new gentlemen members since the spring concert, we still do need more, and ladies too. In the light of this the choir invites interested people, young or older - age is immaterial - who enjoy singing and may be interested, to join them on Monday July 11th in the Imperial Hall Epworth from 7pm to meet the choir, have a cup of tea or coffee and maybe a biscuit or two and try joining in with a song or two as well. The choir is one of the longest in existence in the Isle having been formed 35 years ago, and is a registered charity. And needless to say, friendly and welcoming. Remember, singing is good for the soul, and your mental wellbeing. Go along on the 11th and try it out. Cath Fordham

The last day of term saw our Jubilee celebrations at Haxey Primary School. The day started with the judging of our two competitions - one to design and decorate a crown, and the second to create a picture of the Queen, using any media. We had some amazing entries, including a jumbo -sized crown made out of crispy marshmallow mix, and the judges had a really tough time making their final decisions. The morning was filled with lots of crafty activities and the school was soon looking very festive, with flags and bunting everywhere! Lunchtime saw our kitchen staff put on a fabulous jubilee picnic for the whole school and the lovely weather meant that we could all eat out on the field. Then after lunch we had an afternoon of traditional games, with each class setting up a game for the rest of the school to enjoy - we had parachute fun, pin the tail on the corgi and pin the crown on the Queen, hoopla, tug of war and some hula hoop challenges, with the ultimate being the unicorn and hobby horse steeplechase, with people being awarded extra points for quality of galloping and neighing! The last event was a highly competitive staff v year 6 tug of war - and the Year 6s turned out to be very poor losers! We finished with a lovely assembly, where the prizes were awarded, and then we all received a Jubilee commemorative pen and book mark from our PTFA. It was a really fabulous day, and lovely to have the whole school back together again - a perfect end to the half term!

We had a great day on Friday 27 May celebrating the Queen's platinum Jubilee. Parents joined their children for a picnic on the school grounds. All children waved their flags as they sang ( and signed ) God Save the Queen, as all children in school have been learning Makaton sign language. After lunch, and special jubilee cupcakes, friends and family joined together for an afternoon of traditional games and activities, including welly wanging, fairground games, morris dancing and even pin the tail on the corgi. It was a great end to a wonderful half term and a great way to mark the Queen's Jubilee. Lots of fun was had by all! Mr S Watson Head Teacher Literacy, Science and Sports Co-ordinator
