The next meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society is on Thursday, 11th July at 7.30 in Westwoodside Village Hall. Pat McLaughlin is making a welcome return visit with a talk on "Royal Residences", the palaces, castles and houses occupied by members of the royal family. A brilliant speaker, not to be missed! All welcome. £3, including refreshments.
We have had to change the date of the July walk because of a booking clash and we are now scheduled to start at 7.00pm on Thursday 4 July from Westwoodside Village Hall. The hall has a large car park. The walk will be three to four miles finishing with drinks and biscuits. With a bit of luck we will enjoy classic balmy summer evening weather and be able to forget all about the election! Everyone is welcome as are well behaved dogs on leads.

At the meeting held in May members began with a welcome and the singing of Jerusalem. A presentation of the Resolution to be put forward at the NFWI Annual Meeting to be held in the Royal Albert Hall was discussed, followed by updates from the secretary and the treasurer. There was also an update on the proposed outings and some other related information. The branch has quite an active social calendar which is organised by two or three members. It was noted that a letter of thanks had been received from the food bank as members have been donating items each month this year.
In July Martin Lamb will be welcomed as he presents an evening on Yorkshire Edible Flowers. That meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17th at The Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft beginning at 6.45pm as usual
The evening continued with a “Getting to know you” session. Members talked to someone they didn’t know, seated close by, and then imparted knowledge gained to the group. Each of the four tables had a speaker and members enjoyed learning about each other. Further social activity was then provided by a Beetle Drive. Much hilarity and puzzlement ensued. How could someone have completed a beetle while others hadn’t started? Two winners were presented with prizes for the highest scores and a wooden spoon awarded to the member with the lowest score. The light, entertaining, social evening was concluded with the raffle prize being won and refreshments.
We are open to visitors and new members. We meet at the time stated above on the third Wednesday of each month. Further information may be gained from the website www.highlevelswi.co.uk
Owston Ferry Smithy Museum & Heritage Centre will be hosting our annual Strawberry Tea & Refreshments on Sunday 7th July. Usual admittance £4 adults, £1 children, (and donations appreciated towards the food).
Open 2pm - 5pm. Museum fully open as usual.
On a summer’s evening members met in St Andrew’s Church Epworth for an entertaining evening. Perhaps there were rather fewer members than sometimes but those who attended certainly enjoyed the evening. The original speaker had been involved in an accident so the programme was rearranged and a Supermarket Challenge was the theme. Four members had been provided with a sum of money to buy flowers of their choice and three volunteers had agreed to demonstrate.
One of the more mature and experienced members began. She astounded some of us as she created such a beautiful display with such confidence. Inserting fatsia leaves, photinia (otherwise known as red robin), cyanosis and pittosporum she then added the flowers with which she was provided. They included irises, peonies and a variety of chrysanthemums of different colours. She knew exactly where to place each flower and each piece of foliage. In no time at all she had created a wonderful, large arrangement.
A second member had a small box and quite a lot of foliage. She too created a very pretty arrangement, inserting foliage and flowers somehow into the small box container. This member brought along lily of the valley from her garden and a variety of foliage to create different textures. She added pink alstroemeria and deeper pink carnations and white roses. The result was quite delightful.
The third member, relatively new but talented, set about creating her first display, then she worked on a second. She used a basket for her first arrangement and a cylindrical container for her second. Like the earlier demonstrators she had roses and alstroemeria, peonies and a variety of chrysanthemums. After that there were still flowers left so two hand tied bunches were created. The evening continued with refreshments and an opportunity for a social chat.
Members were given a list of requirements for the June meeting which is to be a workshop delivered by Jo Smith, a professional demonstrator who has entertained the group in the past.
We meet in Saint Andrew’s Church Epworth on the second Monday of each month. The meetings begin at 7.30pm. We consider ourselves to be a friendly bunch and the only prerequisite is that you enjoy flowers. It is by no means expected that everyone has the skills demonstrated at the Supermarket Challenge.
On Wednesday 22 May, we launched our new force-wide proactive initiative, Operation Yokohama, with the aim to target offenders who use motorbikes to commit crimes across our region.
Officers from our Roads Policing team have undertaken further training in advanced off-road tactics which will allow them to pursue offenders who use motorbikes to deliberately escape officers and avoid arrest.
They will focus on criminal hotspot locations across our force area and will utilise equipment, like stingers, with the new specialist motorbikes for the operation as part of our commitment to tackling criminals using our roads as part of their offending.
With support from the wider Roads Policing team, the specially trained officers will have the skills to pursue offenders in an effort to reduce criminal use of motorbikes across Humberside.
The new motorbikes which the team will be operating on can be ridden on public roads or offroad, which will allow the team to continue with a pursuit into off-road areas.
Inspector John Rickells from our Roads Policing Unit said: “I am really pleased to see the launch of Op Yokohama, as it will help to keep our communities safe, and especially our roads from criminals who use motorbikes to facilitate their offending.
“Using motorbikes to evade officers often leads to dangerous situations for other road users, and that’s why it is important for us to be proactive in taking these offenders off our roads.
“As part of the operation, officers have received further training which will allow them to pursue offenders on motorbikes and do all that they can to ensure prompt arrest and prevent further crime being committed.
“Officers from the team will be working closely with officers involved with Operation Yellowfin to share information across teams, to ensure resources are targeted effectively, as well as taking part in days of action to tackle high harm offenders.
“They will also be providing reassurance to the public by being visible in locations which we receive the most reports about.
“By working with other departments across the force, the team will be able to disrupt crime across our force area whilst also taking part in preventative work, like community engagement.
“There is no place for crime in Humberside, and we will do everything we can to make sure that those who engage in such behaviour are put before the courts.
“We would always ask that anyone who may have concerns, or information about crime related to motorbikes to please contact us on our non-emergency number 101, or by calling 999 in an emergency. If you would like to report information anonymously, you can call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

On Saturday June 2024, as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Haxey Parish Council organised a procession of 1940's military and civilian vehicles; the vehicles rendezvoused in Westwoodside Village Hall's car-park, where, supported by stewards from 1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts, they formed a display. Fortunately the weather was good all afternoon and many visitors were welcomed by the owners, who were delighted to answer questions and talk in more detail about their historic vehicles.
There were more displays inside the Village Hallwork commemorating D-Day from pupils of WWS Primary School, memories of Westwoodside in photographs and articles organised by the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society and a display of original military and civilian artefacts provided by '1940's Home and Away', members of which group were on hand to answer the many questions from visitors.
During the afternoon, the committee of the Village Hall served drinks and cake to everyone free of charge, with all donations going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
The afternoon proved to be a great success and the committee members were delighted that the Village Hall, itself opened over 70 years ago, was able to play such a significant part in the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

We have had a much quieter month preparing for upcoming Scout camps and hikes, for DofE, and for D-Day commemorations. Cubs have been busy preparing for the big joint summer camp (at the seaside this year!) and finishing off badges.
Scouts have worked hard on developing their first aid skills to achieving certificates in Basic first aid and CPR skills, and 8 scouts achieved their Emergency First aid badges. Michelle Lazenby came to teach and assess us, bringing a wealth of experience and numerous resuscitation dummies for us to practice on. We hope to run a parent course in Pediatric first aid in the autumn for those interested.
We also spent an evening spring cleaning the Westwoodside village hall in readiness for the D-Day coffee afternoon on June 8th. We dusted the hard-to-reach cobwebs, washed paintwork and skirting boards, and hung colourful bunting both inside and out. The hard work was much appreciated by the committee team and other hall users who noticed the difference!
On June 8th, the vintage vehicle parade started at 12noon at the war memorial and finished at Westwoodside hall. Scouts helped by stewarding the traffic, serving tea and coffee and cake, and washing up. It was a great event to mark a momentous occasion.
This month brings an outing to the Brick Barn at Graizelound, for a challenge evening of cubs vs scouts. Scouts will be joined by a survival expert to teach us wilderness and bivouac skills at Lupine Woods, and the DofE silver team are travelling to the Yorkshire dales to hike from Skipton to Kettlewell, via Malham Cove. Cubs are kayaking with Green Star Canoe club at Blaxton, Learning about conservation at Shepherds Place, Graizelound, and preparing for the summer camp.
Due to a number of cubs moving up to scouts, (and scouts moving up to senior scouts), in September we will have a smaller number of cubs in our wolfpack. If your child would like to try cubs in a smaller supportive atmosphere, do get in touch. Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this term.
Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).
All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, and Cub enquiries should go to Matthieu at: matthieu_maloigne@mentor.com.
