On Thursday June 5th 2014 we are holding a Bat and Moth night at Epworth Turbary. Julie Ellison will give a guided tour of the reserve using sonic detectors to identify the various species. The Isle moth group will also bring along lights to attract and identify a wide variety of moths. Meet at the reserve main gate at 9pm. (warm clothing advised)
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Organ Project at Wesley Memorial Chapel and also to Wroot Chapel. Admission is by ticket/programme purchased at the door priced £5. Accompanied full time students admitted free.
The next meeting of the Isle of Axholme Garden Club is on Tuesday 10 June at the Imperial Hall, Epworth, when Janette Merillion will be talking on "Ideas for Improving your Garden, Design and Planning". There will also be a Plant Swop so bring in one and swop for someone else's. The competition this month is One Specimen Rose in a Vase. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm A Raffle will also be held and refreshments are available on the night. Saturday 7 June - There will be a day trip to Stuart Dixon's Hebbs Farm, Notts. The School Year is just whizzing by. Only one more half term and the it'll be the summer holidays, where hopefully the sun will decide to come out more frequently! This last month has seen a variety of activities. Year 6 can finally have a break after sitting their recent SATS. Well done to all who took part. We hope your hard study has paid off and look forward to seeing the results soon. On the morning of Friday 16th May children from all classes took part in a sponsored walk. This was to raise funds for Phase Worldwide, providing teaching resources for children in the Hagam and Yarchu villages in the region of Chumchet in Nepal. Younger children did a 23 mile circuit around the footpaths and fields of Haxey, whilst older children walked to Epworth and back using the route along the old railway line, a total of 5 miles. Thanks to all for supporting this event, especially Mr Smedley, school governor, who led the walk. Afternoon classes were certainly quieter than usual! As soon as we know the fund total we shall let you know. On Sunday 18th May Mrs Jenman and members of the school choir were at St Nicholas' Church in celebration of the All Ages Worship. The children sang out their hearts, and were worthy participants of this special service. Thanks always to Reverand Green for his warm welcome. The school took part in a Schools Festival at Lincoln Cathedral on 22nd May, which involved over 3000 children from 800 schools in the diocese of Lincoln. This included partaking in a variety of workshops in the morning, followed by worship in the afternoon. The children who attended really enjoyed themselves. The PTFA have been busy organising the next events. They are on with the ever popular summer fayre, with this year seeing a 'pre-loved' school uniform stall. Bags 2 School will be back after half term, so please remember to start putting aside unwanted clothes, and also a disco. The PTFA were delighted to receive a cheque for £500 from fantastic local band, The Laid Bax, who recently held a charity night with The Quirky Birds. This money will go towards replacing the school playground equipment. Many thanks to both bands, please support them at their next gigs. The PTFA are just regular mums and dads who donate an awful lot of time and effort to organise events that benefit children at school. If you would like to help however little time you have, please come to our meetings, any help would be appreciated!

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... St. Martin's Church, Owston Ferry On Sunday 8th June, there is to be a rededication Service to be held at the Archway to St. Martin's Church at 3pm. This will be followed by a Praise Service for Pentecost in the Church and then tea. All are welcome to come along and see the wonderful work carried out to the Archway, with the help by way of part funding from the North Lincolnshire Leader Fund which enabled the Arch to be restored. In addition, repair work has been carried out following the accident, which nearly destroyed the Arch. There will also be an opportunity to see the restoration and repair work carried out so far to the Church. NORS TO FOOD BANK
Anyone who has donated food or household goods to Bassetlaw Food Bank is invited to a ‘thank you’ service at All Saints’ Church on Sunday 29 June at10.00am. There will be refreshments after the service. Two representatives of the Food Bank will talk about their work and the people the Food Bank has been able to help. To date, over 300 bags of goods have been taken from five donation points in the Misterton area. These are churches in Misterton (Parish Church), West Stockwith, Walkeringham, and Beckingham, and the Cycle Barn in Misterton. The Misterton Centre is now a distribution point for local people to collect their food parcels, once registered with Bassetlaw Food Bank.

8 oz plain flour 4 eggs 8 ox self raising flour 1 teaspoon mixed spice Good pinch of salt One half lb mixed fruit 6 oz butter or margarine 1 tablespoon golden syrup 2 oz lard tablespoons milk, brandy or sherry 8oz Demerara sugar

METHOD
Sift, flour salt and spice. Cream fats and sugar until fluffy, add beaten eggs and syrup. Fold in fruit, flour and liquid. Grease and line 2x2 lb loaf tins. Bake in a slow oven 275 F. (gas mark1) for three hours approximately. Created by Mrs Doreen Webster, 5, Tottermire Lane, Epworth.

Axholme Bridleways Association (ABA) was founded in 2012 with the aim of working in harmony with the local community, parish councils and North Lincolnshire Council to raise awareness of the importance of safe public rights of way for walkers, runners, cyclists and riders. The successful 2012 Olympics inspired visitors and local people to take part in outdoor activities. It is ABA's aim to ensure that everyone can respectfully explore the beauty of the Isle of Axholme safely. Routes open to walkers, runners, cyclists and riders are called bridleways and these give safe, convenient and enjoyable off road access to the countryside. There are a lack of bridleways in this area, despite the high number of potential users. The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 provides for a cut-off date, of 1 January 2026, after which rights of way already in existence on 1 January 1949 and not shown on the definitive map and statement by 1 January 2026 will be extinguished. It is imperative that local maps accurate and ABA liaise with relevant authorities to enable existing routes to be preserved and others upgraded or created where possible. ABA are delighted to be invited by Andrew Percy MP to be involved in plans to create an Axholme Greenway bridleway, which it is expected will link Isle villages via bridleway routes and this is being made possible using part of a Heritage Lottery Grant.

ABA Members respectfully use local routes. With relevant permissions, ABA occasionally assist in keeping routes clear and well maintained. ABA organises events to increase awareness about the Association and to raise funds for the Association and Charities, such as Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance. We welcome new Members so if you walk, cycle, run or ride annual membership is just £5 for adults and only £1 for under 18s. Members benefit from Public Liability Insurance for all ABA events and have access to our Route Directory giving details of routes used locally by our Members. Plus they receive support from ABA and the BHS in all aspects of Public Rights of Way and Access. LEADER Programme 2015-2020 How can the LEADER Funding Programme help your rural community in 2015? The Northern Lincolnshire LEADER programme has come to an end after five positive years (2008 to 2013) of helping local rural communities, groups and organisations deliver regeneration projects and address local issues by providing £2.5m funding. Nearly 90 projects have been supported through the programme and there may be a new opportunity for rural communities to apply for LEADER funding in January 2015. The Northern Lincolnshire Local Action Group, the body who oversees the delivery of the funding, is currently putting together a strategy which will help us bring this money to the area; we would like the local rural community of Northern Lincolnshire to tell us how you think this funding should be invested. LEADER funding is made available through the Rural Development Programme for England and from 2015-2020 it will focus on supporting the creation of jobs and growth in rural economies. However, LEADER funding can also support community projects which play a part in supporting the local rural economy. If you would like to take part in this consultation and play your part in determining how this funding might be invested, please complete the online survey at www.northernlincolnshirelag.org. You can tell us your thoughts about the type of community projects you’d like to see in your local area in section 7 but please fill in any part of the survey that is of interest to you. HAXEY & WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY 2014 is proving to be a busy year for the Heritage Society with local speakers, functions and upcoming exhibitions and projects keeping the committee on its toes! January saw Society member, and past Curator of Retford Museum, Malcolm Dolby present an ‘Antiques & Collectables Roadshow whilst February had local resident George Fiddler deliver, with colour slides, a trip around the ‘Villages of Axholme. The March meeting had Axholme Camera Club’s Alan Rowsell in the speaker’s chair asking members ‘Why Go Abroad’? by showing his audience some of the interesting sites and beautiful views to be had in this country. April’s meeting really had our members guessing as Malcolm Dolby, once more in the chair opened his talk ‘The Lost Palace’ and gave his audience a fascinating historical account of the splendours of Worksop Manor of which non of the audience were aware and of which today little remains. The Society’s ‘Easter Tea’ providing a selection of cakes, scones, cream and tea was held in Haxey Church Hall on Easter Saturday among the attractions were a Raffle, Cake stall, a ‘Pick a Stick’ lucky dip, a variety of books and the Society’s publications for sale. Our major project for 2014 will be the WW1 Exhibition to be held in the Haxey Memorial Hall on Saturday 21st. June. The Exhibition will consist of an extensive range of WW1 artifacts, medals, memorabilia a, personal items, WW1 posters, newspaper reports, photographs, silks and postcards. During the exhibition there will be a running film presentation by George Fiddler of ‘The Great War and its effect on Haxey & Westwoodside’. As local people and events will be emphasised display space will be available for anyone wishing to Scunthorpe Lawnmowers Ltd loan or display their own memorabilia. Entrance to the exhibition will be free and light Over 200 refreshment served. Models in This exhibition is being provided by the Heritage Society as its contribution to the WW1 Stock commemoration year. Meetings of the Society are held in the Westwoodside Village Hall on the second Thursday of each month commencing at 7.30pm.

Lindsey Lodge Hospice, will benefit from fund raising, with an exciting BIG new event being planned, for the Isle In June Inspired by three farmers, Geoff Fillingham, Stuart Lindley and Richard Thompson, they and their friends will take to their tractors from far and wide for the Isle's inaugural, Vintage Tractor Road Run. Quite common in North Notts., Lincolnshire and Holderness, 2014 has already seen eight events taken place to date with other charities being supported. Vintage Tractor Runs are gaining in popularity and are a fun day out for all says Geoff. Geoff continues, "we thank all the landowners for allowing us over their land" quoting to me "to fully appreciate a tractor run you'll need to be there to see it, but most of all to hear it". This unique Isle event commences at the Mowbray Arms Epworth, (courtesy of Shaun Scally) on Sunday 22 June 2014. Bring the family along from 8.30 am to see these terrific machines warming up. After their bacon sandwiches and coffee, enthusiastic drivers will set off at 10am, taking in both roads and countryside through Isle Central.

Currently Stuart Lindley is working with our local police and other farmers for permission of use. The projected route being about 30 miles in length includes, Rectory Street, Blow Row, Burnham Road, Fieldside, Tunnel Pits, Haxey Carr, Turbary Road, The Nooking, High Burnham and on to lunch at the White Hart Owston Ferry, where landlord Pete Smith will serve welcome drinks and lunch around mid-day. The run continues along North Street, Trentside Road onto West Butterwick, Beltoft Road, Newlands Lane and Rectory Street back to the Mowbray Arms by about 3pm where a raffle supported by local businesses will take place, along with some well deserved refreshments The organisers are sure that the public will get behind them by supporting the event. Collection buckets will be available for donations, your kindness will be most appreciated. Come along everyone to see these wonderful machines in action.

After the glorious blossom on the apple trees in the spring and the absence of late frosts once again, many trees have set a lot of fruitlets. These will grow on to become the fruit you harvest in the autumn. It always seems harsh to cut out your apples which could grow on to become fruit you could eat, but if you leave all the apples which are set to grow on it is unlikely that the tree will be able to sustain them all to grow into a decent size. Moreover, producing a large crop of apples saps the energy level of the tree and often leads to a smaller crop the next year. This is how some trees become biennial in their fruiting habit. So, it is generally not a good idea to allow the tree to have free rein and you need to give it a helping hand once more. You may have noticed that the tree sheds some of the small fruitlets anyway. It will do this in June – and is therefore called the ‘June drop’ – and early July. My experience is that this is often not enough and you need to take out the scissors or secateurs to do some light thinning. The time to do this is once the tree has naturally shed the excess fruit. Some trees can produce as many as five or six fruits per cluster at this stage in the year. Which ones should you take out? You should aim for two or at most three fruits in any cluster - for cooking apples, perhaps only one. Look first for any damaged or diseased fruit and remove them. You will notice that in any cluster one of the fruitlets is growing to be bigger than the others. This is the ‘king’ fruit. You will need to leave this – unless it is diseased or otherwise damaged – and take out some of the others. Other work to do this month is to have a look around your trees and check that there are no broken branches – perhaps from the wind or from birds. Broken branches which are left unmanaged will harbour disease and should be cleaned up. Take a sharp pair of secateurs or a saw and make a clean cut above the damage. DESIGN-PLANNING-CONSTRUCTION

The Isle of Axholme Lions joined the Vulcan Team at Robin Hood Airport for an evening of excitement and expectations. An idea came to Peter Lindley Chairman of the Isle Of Axholme Lions to have to Vulcan Bomber come to Haxey, a feat which was felt a near impossibility to achieve. So it was decided the next best thing was to take the Lions to the home of the Vulcan. It was the first time that the lions had arranged to hold a dinner party under the wing of the famous Delta Winged aircraft, number XH558. Plus, it was the very first time the Vulcan team had been asked or even contemplated the possibility of holding a dinner party for about two hundred people in a very large hangar.

Luckily, all the problems were over come and the go ahead was given. The program for the evening included a descriptive talk about the trip to the Falkland Islands by its pilot at the time, Mr Martin Withers. VIP tours around this last remaining operational Vulcan Bomber escorted by members of the team of volunteers who made sure all questions were answered. This was followed by a wonderful three course meal cooked and served to each table by the local organisation run by Sandra Bishop and her staff. All done under very difficult conditions due to the security and the size of the hangar, note all the cooking arrangements had to be done outside under canvas, in the temporary kitchens set up in the afternoon. Well done to Sue and her staff for a very difficult job. There was also an auction of Vulcan memorabilia which raised in excess of ÂŁ400. The funds raised during the evening is going to help keep the Vulcan in the Sky plus also help support the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire air ambulance. Axholme Camera Club News Wednesday 7th May at Axholme Camera Club marked the third year of their connection with the Australian RSL Camera Club. During the three years Australia have shown their experience and large number of members (over two hundred members) by winning the six monthly competition. However, for May 2014 the images selection committee are expecting a more even result. The subject chosen by Axholme is “FLIGHT” images can be anything to do with the title. Birds, Planes in flight or being more creative a flight of stairs etc. The title did bring out the creative minds and we had the expected but also small insects, balloons in flight plus a man dressed as superman all showing good quality images. The two judges, one chosen by Axholme Mr Stuart Clark and Mr Rod Murphy chosen by Castlehill RSL and lives in Hong Kong both expressed their appreciation at being asked to judge this international Digital Photographic Competition. Both stating that the images show depth and variation from the photographers. The scores this time were very close with once again Castlehill coming out top. In the Army Now

Misterton News POLICE DOGS’ DISPLAY TO FEATURE AT GALA Notts Police dog team will make a return visit to the Misterton Gala on Saturday 5 July at Misterton Sports Social Club. Back by popular request, the dog handlers will demonstrate the training and skills of the dogs in a range of real-life scenarios. 30 stalls are now booked for the annual event with a full programme in the arena and live music throughout the day. Members of Misterton’s Junior Football Club will show off their footballing skills and local army cadets will put on a have-a-go archery session. The Gala is from 12 noon to 5.00pm. Entry is £2 for adults with accompanied children free. ENTRIES FOR BEST-KEPT ALLOTMENT INVITED Allotments gardeners are invited to enter the annual local competition for the Best-Kept Allotment, which looks at the condition of the plot, workmanship, crops, layout and planning, and environmental friendly practice and biodiversity. Dear readers,
How long does it take you to get from A to B? If you are like most people, you will know typical journey times for regular trips that you make. Phrases like "I made great time", or "it only took me ..... to get to here today” are typical comments we hear every day. We tend to judge the quality of a trip by how short it is. In fact, we are creating our own time expectations and this puts us under pressure when we can't meet them. To make matters worse, these are often self imposed. Over the next week actually time the same journey twice. On the first occasion, drive as normal, trying not to go faster or slower than usual. The next time you undertake the same trip, consciously drive in a more relaxed and less hurried manner. If you compare the two journey times you will often find that, if your trip was a relatively short one, the difference can be measured in – at most - minutes. If the journey was two, three or even four hours, the difference is likely to be no greater than twenty to thirty minutes. Ask yourself how you feel after completing each trip. Is there any difference? What is your stress level like? What have you done with all those precious minutes you saved? The chances are that you will feel more relaxed and refreshed after the second trip. This is more likely to be that case if you accept that there are many things outside your control - the weather, traffic delays due to accidents, road works or simply traffic volumes. Fewer overtakes, less chance of mistakenly going too fast through a speed camera – a more relaxed journey all round. If things do go wrong, it is useful to focus on what you can do, rather than on what you can't. If you have a mobile phone, you can ring ahead to explain that you are delayed so that alternative plans can be made. In this situation the mobile phone can be really useful: once that call has been made, you will drive in a more composed way. The pressure is off if you have rung ahead to say you have been delayed by a few minutes. Needless to say, that call should ideally be made when you have pulled over somewhere convenient and legal – or at least from a hands-free unit.
